Amman Queen Alia Airport customer review

(Thailand)

One of the worst airports anywhere although not quite on a par with Kathmandu's Domestic Terminal. Currency exchange desk unmanned for several minutes on arrival resulting in long queue for local currency to purchase visa on arrival. One desk for such visas yet no-one on duty. It turned out we could not see the officer was asleep! Baggage for business class took 45 minutes to appear. Business class departure was initially more pleasant until getting near the gate where the chaos at a second security check and the gate itself was quite appalling. Transit on the way back from LHR to BKK was almost a farce when an Immigration officer accused me of trying to exit Jordan without having a visa despite my showing him by LHR/AMM boarding pass and ticket! It was only when a colleague put him right that he waived me on. Gate management was even worse: just one official taking a good 20 seconds to check each passenger against the manifest of a nearly full A330 and then no priority boarding - just a mad scrum. The new Terminal cannot come soon enough. Unless they provide extensive training for the staff though I cannot see how it will improve much.

Amman Airport is one of the worst I've been to and I often travel all around for leisure and business! Impolite staff! Most don't speak English and try to communicate in Arabian. Queue? They don't know what queue is. It is a real mess people coming and going everyone talking at the same time. With lots of connections mostly domestic ones you have to walk outside the building. On one occasion it was raining heavily and all passengers who had to transfer from domestic into international terminal got just wet! I've been here a few times and I don't recommend it at all!

Amman is one of the worst airports I have ever been to (I have only transited here). You are only allowed into the gates when your flight is due to board and there is minimal seating in this waiting area (although a reasonable duty free section). Security is a free-for-all scrum with no order whatsoever and planeloads of people pushing and shoving and I have concerns for its effectiveness. The staff appear surly but are friendly when asked. The whole place stinks of smoke staff smoke freely around the terminal especially early in the morning.

Awful. Long lines for visas and even for people with visas. Have to have exact change for visa no USD. Lots of men passing huge piles of passports to desk from people at back of line. Place dim smoky and really 3rd world in appearance. Bags not there after waiting 45 mins for Visa and immigration. Duty free shop is quite good though. New airport is on the way - unless they retrain everyone in how to run a busy airport it will be a lovely building staffed by incompetents.

Compact airport starting to look a bit shabby and overcrowded but it covers all the bases decently. Immigration area is small and crowded but we were processed quickly and luggage was already waiting at carousel downstairs so it took less than 30 minutes to be out of the airport in all. Check-in is more of a chore due to overcrowded x-ray area prior to check in again the process is faster than first impression. Decent duty free and lounge. While by no means an impressive airport I have seen much worse hopefully the modern looking new terminal which is being built next door will be completed soon in order to relieve some of the pressure on this one.

Not the smartest airport: two "terminals" connected by a shopping corridor. Airport staff and officials can appear sullen but that's only surface - they are usually helpful when needed. The business-class lounge (Crown Lounge) is large and comfortable enough although the food offered is uninspiring. Oddly for an airport/airline trying to build a hub network long haul business passengers arriving in the early hours have to pay to use showers or spend time in a relaxation room. Long connections may or may not entitle you to a nearby hotel room if you are travelling RJ. The visa purchase and immigration queues on arrival can be a trial something the airport and the security/immigration services could iron out quite simply.

Of all the airports I've visited this one is definitely the most run down with the dirtiest toilets . As previously stated there is an attendant who sits but definitely does not do anything else. As for the rest of the terminal shabby but okay. The cafe was very good serving good quality sandwiches and drinks for a reasonable price and they had free WiFi. Have to say I was surprised by the state of the airport in dire need of a facelift its one saving grace - nice staff.

Had stopovers in Amman en route to Bangkok and back. The staff was friendly. My complaint is the bathroom - no toilet seats. And despite having a bathroom attendant in there the whole time it really wasn't clean. The bathrooms certainly do not reflect cleanliness and amenities elsewhere in the airport. Airport security couldn't care less about what I took to Thailand but was very strict when returning to the US. They went through my bags and confiscated my tweezers.

The worst airport I've ever used! The toilets and airport in general were dirty. The staff was rude. At the passport control there was an officer and a friend of his who kept my passport to look every single stamp in it and discuss about the countries I've visited! Then they were asking where my country is (Cyprus). After that duty free was expensive. Such a pity because we liked the country but this airport was the last taste.

A colleague experienced the usual scales fiddle with her bag weighing 6 kg more on the return flight than the outbound flight. No amount of discussion could get them to weigh the bag again on another set of scales. Check-in was fast security thorough (three different sets of X-rays and gates before you get to the plane. A very large Duty Free with reasonable prices. WIFI was confusing three different networks seemed to be there one marked "Free" which it was not and the others would not respond. Cafes etc plentiful and airport was clean.
