"WestJet has become irresponsible, is not what I knew about this airline"

Trip Verified | We bought tickets for a wedding to fly out on Dec 16/2021. At Pearson airport we are told that there is a problem with the crew and we have to fly out by American Airlines to a different destination - San Jose. We lost money on our hotel reservation and rental car at Sacramento, we had to redo hotel and car at San Jose then we are currently at Los Angeles airport. Took WestJet 2.5 hours to check us in only to be told that there is a flight crew problem again, no crew to work. So we are being rerouted to Calgary instead of Toronto. We have our boarding passes in our hand and we get a call from WestJet 1800 number saying they can’t confirm even this flight. WestJet has become irresponsible, is not what I knew about this airline. I am now stranded at LA airport wondering if the boarding pass in my hand is a valid document. Time will tell in 1 hour.

"What a let down"

Not Verified | What a let down, WestJet staff know nothing other than their immediate station, and aren't able to help with anything. In the same trip we were delayed 24 hours in the Calgary Airport, our checked luggage is still not returned to us, we received no vouchers for the delay and added expense, and we got 3 different answers from 3 different people when asking the same questions. There are no means of calling someone to find out whats going on without a 5 (yes Five) day call back time. Don't use WestJet for International travel.

Not Verified | 7.5 hour flight Calgary to Honolulu. Nothing offered to eat except small bag of pretzels. Very small bag of pretzels. No food to buy. Westjet is now the worst airline in Canada.

"bag would be checked through to Toronto"

Trip Verified | When I checked my bag at Honolulu, I was told it would go through to my final destination Toronto even though I had a layover in Vancouver. On board the flight to Vancouver I checked with the flight attendant who confirmed my bag would be checked through to Toronto. On landing, I checked with the gate agent who confirmed my bag would go through to Toronto. Imagine my shock as I walked past the Vancouver luggage carousel to see my bag drop through the chute. I asked at the baggage desk why this would happen when three Westjet employees independently confirmed the bag would go straight through to Toronto, his answer was simply "It is after 10:00 pm." Apparently, after 10 they place all luggage on the carousel. If I had not seen it as I walked past the carousel, it never would have arrived in Toronto until God knows when. What utter incompetence by Westjet employees who should have known about this policy but did not. Three of them. So this was obviously not an isolated incident. Incompetence in Honolulu. Incompetence on board the flight Incompetence in Vancouver.

"Westjet has become a joke airline"

Trip Verified | On a beautiful sunny day the 35 minute flight from Edmonton to Calgary is delayed 4 hours, half of that spent sitting on tarmac. Missed connecting flight in Calgary, one agent available to rebook about 40 stranded passengers. Told that next available flight to get to my destination is in two days. Two weeks prior, have to call in to get a kennel added to itinerary. "Higher than normal call activity, would you like to schedule a callback" Earliest available scheduled callback is seven days away. One of many examples over the past few months of how Westjet has become a joke airline.

"they would not let us on the plane"

Not Verified | My trip was from Toronto to Los Cabos, Mexico. We would fly from Toronto to Calgary, then from Calgary to Los Cabos. There was one major issue with this trip. The layover that we had in Calgary was only 30 minutes! Now, I was a bit naive to think that that was plenty of time IF we arrive on time, IF the connecting gates were right beside each other and IF the connecting flight waited for us in the case there was a slight delay. WestJet Vacations set this itinerary up not accounting for any delays, the time it took to get off the plane, and the time it would take to walk to the next gate. When we arrived in Calgary, we experienced a 20 min delay, it took 10 min to get off the plane, and the connecting gate was 15 min away by walk (I'm not kidding you. There were even signs up telling you how far of a walk each gate was). If you do the math, it is almost impossible to make that next flight unless the plane was willing to wait for you. Well, they didn’t. We arrived at 9:26am and sprinted to get to the gate, which was closing at 9:30am, along with a 70-year-old lady and still managed to get to the gate by 9:35am. The plane was still there and they would not let us on the plane. We pleaded with the passenger agents and not only would they not let us on but they were rude. They also told us that we were already transferred to the next flight (Which was the NEXT DAY!) without our consent and without ANY confirmation emails, NOTHING. We were directed to speak to another agent in charge of customer service. After we pleaded with him, he did nothing for us. No compensation, no payments for a hotel we would need, no allowance for food or taxi service, NOTHING. Because of the mess we had to deal with WestJet/WestJet Vacations, we lost 1 day at our resort that was paid for. The only thing this customer service agent told us was to call WestJet Vacations and to call our resort in Mexico ourselves to let them know we would be arriving a day later so we don’t lose all of our money, only some. Oh and we had to pick up our luggage. We head down to pick up our bags and speak to an agent and were told that we would get our bags shortly. We waited like idiots for an hour and fifteen minutes and still nothing. We then speak to the agent again and she goes on her computer and sees that our bags have been scanned! She then tells us “it’s likely your bags are on that plane headed to Mexico” but there was no way to confirm! How the hell did our bags make it on that fight but not us!? So no we are stuck in Calgary with no hotel, no clothes, and we’ve lost money due to missing a day at the resort. I then try to call WestJet Vacations as instructed, and waited over 4 hours on the phone on hold AND nobody answered. We hung up and tried again and finally got an answer after an additional 1 hour of waiting. We spoke with a customer service agent and we explained our situation and how we were unhappy about how our situation is being handled. Long-story-short, he basically told us “Sh*t happens”. The customer service agent told us we would NOT receive any compensation for our lost time at the resort, NO compensation for our expenses in Calgary and that WE would have to be the ones to try and convince the resort in Mexico to give us an extra night. The only thing he was actually able to do was “hold” 2 spots for us on the plane if the resort agreed to give us an extra night. WestJet and WestJet Vacations, You are Cheap!

"refuse to give a refund if I cancel"

Not Verified | Absolutely disgusted. Had a flight booked for May 2021, changed due to covid restrictions, rebooted to Jan 2022. Now due to WestJet's exclusionary policy changes they won't let me or my family on a plane and refuse to give a refund if I cancel, saying it's a "voluntary change", as if I'd choose to cancel my holiday that's been deferred already. After being a loyal customer for years, I'm nauseated at this treatment. Gross and appalling.

"I'll never travel with them again"

Not Verified | I'm super disappointed by my WestJet Vacation package. We bought a vacation package to Mexico 2 months in advance. On the day of the flight, there was a messed up at the Westjet counters and there was a huge line up there. We were at the airport 4 hours before our flight and had to wait in a huge line up. Getting closer to our flight time, we asked the staff several times about our flight and they reassured us that they will get us on board and the flight may have a little delay. However, when they finally checked us in 15 minutes before the scheduled departure, they said they can't check-in our suitcases and otherwise we will lose the flight. We were at the airport with our baby for 4 hours and finally they didn't let us and 20 others passengers to board. When we called customer service for a reschedule or cancellation, they were not willing to help us out and asked us to either cancel through our insurance or reschedule our departure and lose part of our package (our package was for 5 days and with the new schedule it would have changed to 3.5 days). We were looking for a relaxed vacation but instead got stressed out with no customer support. The WestJet representatives kept telling us that its not their fault and therefore they can't do anything for us. I was expecting much more from WestJet but considering how they treated us, I'll never travel with them again.

"No explanation, no apology"

Trip Verified | All my flights were changed by at least a full day prior to departing. So I missed time with my family that I was meeting in Kauai. On the return my Vancouver to Victoria flight was delayed. I was supposed to land at 9.24. Landed 11.30am. It is now 11.55am and we are still waiting for our luggage. No explanation, no apology. Just terrible service. I’m going to avoid WestJet whenever possible.

"employees did not want to help at the airport"

Trip Verified | The service was poor from the minute I went to the desk to check in til I arrived at my destination. I was 2 hours and 30 min early to the airport and almost missed my flight. The employees did not want to help at the airport and the flight attendant was very rude. I went to put my bag in the bag drop exactly one hour before my flight after being in line for over an hour and it rejected my bag. Come to find out after a lot of my persisting all the Westjet employee had to do was check my bag and give approval and my bag went through just fine. It was all totally unprofessional and the flight attendant’s attitude was horrible.
