"Great for short flights"
Tim Patrick (Hong Kong)
Not Verified | Very early flight out of HK- bussed from the terminal near gate 5 downstairs so easy. A bit of messing around at check in- e-check in you need to show visas etc. Plane spotless and staff attentive. Bathrooms clean. Return we prebooked one bag between us for the hold which we would recommend - its about 30-40 USD to do so whereas on the spot it's more like 70 US. plane is immaculate and the staff responsive and quick. Pre-booked meals are served quickly and hot and cold drinks available. Walked off to a far gate but train takes you to immigration. Great for short flights and I feel they are better earlier in the day as more likely to be on time. Seat is fine for a 2 -3 hour flight I would say. Drinks aren't extortionate- nice cold prosecco for 50 HK. the app/ website is a bit tricky. I joined it but had to do it all on the laptop first then open the app and register. Sort of CX connected but not really. It's a bit counter-intuitive.

"I had to pay to get my luggage on
Wesley Chetty (South Africa)
✅ Trip Verified | HKExpress service in Phillipines is a disgrace. My small cabin bag which was less than 7kgs was not allowed on as a carry on. I had to pay double the amount of my actual flight ticket to get my luggage on. The customer service lady was rude and not understanding. I wouldn't recommend this useless airline to anyone. As it says budget, but you end up paying more than it actually is.

"should not have board people"
Haley Lin (Canada)
✅ Trip Verified | Departure time was 18:40, boarding time was 17:55, we were not notified of the delay, did not board until 19:50, then we were told there were a malfunction with one of the parts of the plane and the mechanic team are working on fixing it, will take approximately one hour, worse case they will arrange a different plane for us to depart, we were stuck in the cabin for 2 hrs with out any food or water provided. When I asked the flight attendant for complementary water due to the delay, I was refused and told have to pay for beverages. People started to buy cup noodles and water then were told at the 3rd hour in cabin that the problem could not be resolved and they had to disembark us off the plane and arrange another plane, At 20:00 we were disembark, and told new flight had been arranged, departure time is now 2300, boarding at 20:30. AGAIN, we were not boarded until almost midnight, the flight is from Hong Kong to Taipei, fly duration is one hour and 20 mins, it took us total of almost 7 hours to get to our destination. It is a bit ridiculous to have us sit in the cabin for over 3 hours not providing any water, asking people to pay for food and beverages, they should not have board people on if plane is not ready.

"avoid flying with them"
Morris Lam (Hong Kong)
Not Verified | Absolutely horrible experience — these people are nothing but scammers. Do yourself a favor and avoid flying with them. I booked a flight to Tokyo for August 16th, only to receive a notification that it had been moved to the 18th. Annoyed but needing to stick to my original plan, I booked another HK Express flight for the 16th, which cost me an extra $750 HKD. Fine, I dealt with it. But then, I couldn't even check in online for my new flight. To make matters worse, they changed my second flight back to the 18th! I would have understood if all the seats were taken, but no — when I checked the booking site, the same flight I rebooked was still available! These people are nothing but con artists whose only goal is to bleed you dry. Beware when booking with them because you will get scammed out of your money.

"regret booking this flight"
Emmanuel Baldevia (Philippines)
Not Verified | I understand it’s a budget airline but this economy plane will kill you due to hypertension or heatstroke because of no air conditioning when everyone has boarded. I regret booking this flight. They were also not on time during boarding. The price is not even economy. You can buy the same economy for Cebu Pacific. Don’t book this airline!!!

"2800 pesos for the change"
Martin Dodd (United Kingdom)
✅ Trip Verified | This airline must be avoided at all costs. I made a mistake in the name and within minutes of noticing the mistake I phoned HK Express. They told me I had to pay 2800 pesos for the change despite the speed at which I noticed the mistake. Next, the website did not accept my credit card, if this was not bad enough they then wanted me to read my details over the phone. The airline drama did not end here, when checking in the hand luggage could not have wheels. This is a low cost airline with low cost morals, even on appealing the cost I was charged!

"website was far from user-friendly"
N Gan (Hong Kong)
✅ Trip Verified | I purchased a HK Express airline ticket from a well-known travel booking site but when I attempted to perform an online check-in using the ticket reference number, the airline's website and app failed to recognize it. Their website was far from user-friendly and lacking clear instructions on how to make inquiry with my issue. Fortunately, through a conversation with a colleague who had faced a similar situation, I learned about a hidden website that could only be found via a Google search. After completing the online check-in, I encountered another setback when attempting to print my boarding pass. Despite receiving an email confirmation with a button to print the boarding pass, the button did not work. Upon arriving at the airport, I had hoped to use the self-serve kiosk to print my boarding pass by scanning my passport. However the process failed to function. I approached a ground helper who suggested me to try another kiosk. Not surprising another kiosk also failed and then I was told to go to the counters. The very long queues for the counters added to the overall inconvenience and discomfort. Eventually, I got to the counter and the staff printed my boarding pass but what struck me was their keen interest in checking the weight of my carry-on luggage (max. 7kg) and the size of my backpack. While queueing, I noticed that at certain intervals, ground crew members would call out passengers of specific flights to come forward due to the approaching boarding time. This practice seemed to be a reactive measure to prevent passengers from missing their flights due to the abysmal check-in process and long queues. The numerous obstacles and technical failures encountered subjected passengers to unnecessary inconvenience, prolonged queues, and hidden procedures that compromise the overall travel experience.

"Simply avoid"
Sipopa Sibamba (France)
Not Verified | Horrible experience my first and last time. Staff at HK airport are very really rude. Paid 350$ for not Having my middle name on the booking. Not so cheap once all taxes added and they screw you around, you can opt for Cathay. Simply avoid.

"said I hadn't entered my second, middle name"
Simon Middleton (Hong Kong)
✅ Trip Verified | I rarely complain about an airline. HK Express are part of Cathay, incredibly, so I expected a fair, budget service. I booked the flight with all the extras, luggage, UFirst, a meal, seat 1A, but I got to the airport and at check-in they demanded another $350. Why? Because I bought my ticket with my first name and family name, just like I had always booked every 1000+ flights I had taken before. The check-in person told me I had the wrong name. They said I hadn't entered my second, middle name when I bought the ticket. I argued with them for such a ridiculous triviality and was told that HK Express are desperate to get extra money from unsuspecting customers. I told them I have flown Cathay many many times and have never once used my middle name. I have flown with other budget airlines many times and never used my middle name. I even flew HK Express on a number of occasions before COVID and never needed my middle name. There is no warning on the website that a customer will be fined if they don't enter their irrelevant middle name. This left a very sour taste, hugely tarnished the flight and my opinion of this airline and I will never fly with HK Express or their parent airline, Cathay, again. The flight itself was actually fine, it's the disgraceful name trick that I found utterly abhorrent.
