"she didn’t even care"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Flew from Dallas to Oakland via Phoenix. First flight delayed one hour but arrived only 3 min before connector flight but when I went to gate it was gone. They referred me to customer service counter and lady was rude when I told her I had to get home cuz my wife was having a baby at home and she didn’t even care. She said why don’t I Check with other airlines and I asked if I had to pay and she said yes. You would think since I paid for a ticket already and they made me miss connector that they would bend over backwards for everyone that missed.

"friendly flight attendant"

(Qatar)

Trip Verified | Washington to Houston via Dallas Ft Worth. Evening departure on an older 737-800 with no entertainment system and average service nothing to mention about it, connected with a much newer 737-800 with an entertainment system. I must mention the super friendly flight attendant who was super pleasant and helpful.

"miserable flying experience"

(United States)

Trip Verified | New York JFK to Nashville. The most miserable flying experience I have ever had. The flight home was incredibly uncomfortable. It was so hot on the plane that the chocolates that we had bought in the airport melted. I will never fly again. Staff was less than friendly and would be better off working for TSA. Complete waste of money.

"basic economy doesn't work like that"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Miami to Atlanta. Dont Ever fly with them. They lied to us on the phone when we called prior to our flight saying we would be able to keep our return flight if we chose to purchase a flight earlier than the original one. The day we went to check in they said they had cancelled our flight, wouldn't give refund, said we lied about ever calling. We have proof that we called. Said they wouldnt help us that the basic economy doesn't work like that. We followed their rules to a T and called prior to make sure and then told the day it was cancelled that we cant miss the first flight, although again it was approved ahead of time. They didn't even act caring, had to wait extreme times on the phone to talk to anyone. No one was helpful or even admitted they cancelled it, kept blaming someone else. If you want help dont fly with them! So were stuck on miami with no way home to my kids, unless we wanna pay another $360 just to fly home cheapest possible with them.

"not helping customers out"

(United States)

Not Verified | AA policy. I had a 9:30pm flight from Miami to Dallas. I arrived at the airport in time from a previous flight to catch a 6:30pm same flight. Despite being empty seats. They don't allow you to exchange the flight. They said there's usually $75 fee you can pay to change. I was not allowed to do this for unknown reasons. AA leading the way in not helping customers out.

"overwhelmingly apparent cost-cutting"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Jacksonville to Boston via Charlotte. If American Airlines didn't have such good credit card offers for mileage accrual, I would reconsider flying with them. I am a regular user of American because of convenience of routes and schedules, but I find myself turned off by their oddly convoluted (and long) boarding times, less than helpful ground staff, and overwhelmingly apparent cost-cutting. I purchased a premium seat online for one segment of my trip, and was charged accordingly. However, upon check-in, I was told the payment was not received and that I'd have to repay the $41.60 fee, and no effort was made to rectify the problem on the check-in staff's part. Dispute is still ongoing with my bank. Let's move onto the actual product though. The two aircraft I flew were definitely showing their age, but the new leather seating and adjustable headrests (737-800 models) were greatly appreciated and of good quality. Arrival and departure times were more than punctual and flight attendants were friendly enough, but the borderline harassment that ensues when 6 minutes of intercom time is devoted to credit card advertisement is definitely a turn-off. I didn't use the wifi, but I did use the stream-to-device entertainment, which worked well. There was also traditional overhead monitors available on the 737-800, playing standard sitcom fare. Overall it's an average experience, but a few factors such as aging planes and odd advertisements, along with cheap biscotti snacks and pricey buy-on-board options leave just the slightest bad taste in my mouth.

"dismal performance"

(United States)

Not Verified | Philadelphia to Rome. On October 10, 2018, I had one of the most unpleasant experiences, in a long career in flying. When I checked in for AA 718, over two hours before the departure, I noticed that our seats were not assigned on the boarding passes. I thought this odd since I had selected our seats and paid extra for those seat selections. I checked the AA website and saw that a note that the flight was delayed 30 minutes, but I did not receive an email alert. We went to the assigned gate and 20 minutes before scheduled take off, it was announced that our flight was delayed, the gate was changed, and the plane was changed. Our seats, which I selected and paid $282 for extra leg room (it was a 7.5 hour flight), were not honored and we were assigned seats in the rear of the plane where we could enjoy the roar of the engines and a hint of jet fuel for the duration of the flight. AA's code sharing partner, British Airways, also foisted the "change of plane" and doomed us to horrible seats. I have a suspicion there was some consolidation of flights going on here. I checked the flight the day before and many seats were still available. The upshot of this is that I believe that AA changed to a plane with fewer seats and that our "guaranteed" seats were not honored. I am left wondering who sat in our seats, and why we were selected for inferior seats. If I am unable to feel confident that the seats I select and pay for will be available, why would I ever utilize American Airlines again? Please persuade me as to why I should fly American Airlines again, after this dismal performance.

"had enough with American Airlines"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Philadelphia to Los Angeles. I had enough with American Airlines. It's now #2 on the list of worst airlines I ever used (#1 is Wamos, a Spanish airline). Their personnel on the ground (and in the air) is actually pretty helpful and their machines fairly simple to use, at least from my experience. But it's once you're onboard that you realize your mistake. I paid $1030 for a flight from LA to Reading and back, the same price I would pay for a trip to Europe, which is twice the distance. You'd think for that price you can get a minimum quality, even on economy. Wrong. For a start, you pay $30 for your first check-in luggage, and it grows exponentially! Totally outrageous. What this does, it makes everybody bringing carry-ons, overcharging the cabin with carry-on luggage, making it hard to find space above your seat for your luggage, so you have to put it in a totally different area (what a hassle to get it when you exit the plane!). No food for the whole flight (Yes, AA, I don't call food a couple of pretzels and a soda). If you want food, you have to pay for it. And what kind of food! Then, there is the entertainment: just as it seems to become a trend on the worst airlines, American Airlines forces you to use your own devices to be able to watch their programs. In their penny pinching minds, they automatically assume that everyone has a smart phone, or a tablet, or a computer. If you don't have any device on you, or your device is not compatible with their system (more on that later), you're out of luck. But the incredible part is, they don't even provide any electric plug or USB for you to plug in your devices! So, if all you have to watch movies onboard is your smartphone (which is already pitiful), and you need your phone battery fully charged for when you arrive at your final destination and need to call your friends, taxis, hotels, etc., again, you're out of luck. Now, let's talk about device compatibility with their onboard movie/TV system, which uses Flash Player. I did have a fully updated version of Flash Player on my computer, but their system kept saying it was not updated. After several attempts, since they were offering to download their own updated version of Flash Player, I decided to uninstall my version and replace it with theirs. Guess what? It still would not work. Their system would not recognize its own version of Flash Player on my machine! Unbelievable. I uninstalled and re-installed the app again, tried everything to get it to connect. Nothing worked. I spent the whole trip with no entertainment. Also, the cabin remained pitch black the whole time (you could barely see where you walked) which was very hard on your eyes when people constantly turned on their individual light or their computer screen. When we got to the luggage claim area at the airport, no indication anywhere of which carousel it was. When we finally found it, the previous plane had not even started their download, which made us wait for an extra hour. To top it off, I was carrying fragile items in a separate box. American Airlines made me pay an extra $200 (one way) because it was oversize. But the best part: they didn't put it with the oversize luggage (that are usually handled with a bit more care), they put it with the regular ones. Nothing was broken, but the whole experience really made me furious. The irony in all this is: AA is one of the only airline companies to wear the name: American. Aren't you ashamed, guys? You should be.

"Terrible customer service"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Terrible customer service rebooking and flight cancellation policy’s are a joke. Was cheaper to rebook than to change a flight with more than two weeks notice. Customer service representatives have all been very unprofessional to talk to and will not be booking with American Airlines again.

"Absolutely awful"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Miami to San Francisco. Absolutely awful! How is this airline still in business? I can't even believe how awful they are and expensive too. My flight was delayed 11 hours and there was no apology!! Just a deal with it attitude! No vouchers, no excuses, no apologies!! On top of that, a 5 hour flight offering a cold Turkey croissant for almost 10 dollars! Only choice! Plus a bad movie, their choice. Hated it! Never again!
