Yangon Airport

Yangon is a tale of two airports - the modern international one and the substandard domestic one. The international airport is clean, modern, spacious and welcoming. Services are fine and lines are normally - not too long for check-in or immigration. The waiting lounges are spacious as well and pretty comfortable. There are a few places to eat but I cannot attest to their quality. There are several counters selling souvenirs, and though prices are certainly higher than in the city, there are still bargains, and bargaining is also possible. However, the domestic airport is a mess. It is dirty, dreary and uncomfortable. Baggage claim is a joke. All bags are dumped in the middle of the arrival room, and passengers are hounded by official looking porters who demand your bag tags and then overcharge you for dragging them out of the pile. Getting from the domestic to the international terminal can be challenging even though it is within walking distance. There is a lot of airport construction going on at the moment, so there is hope that the domestic side will be improved soon. There is also new international airport going up south of the city. Be forewarned that traffic in Yangon is bad, and you should plan to leave the city at least 3 hours before your flight between 9 AM and 6 PM.

The domestic airport is a scene of chaos. Around the terminal entrance the floor is littered with cardboard boxes. Getting to the airline counter is a wrestle all the way. At security they confiscate your cigarette lighter - not allowed. In departures there is a smoking room upstairs. Some people find that a lighter will get through security in your back pocket. Upstairs there is a lounge, it has wifi and a coffee machine, costs 5000 chats for session. Air conditioning in the domestic terminal is poor, but not unbearable.

I came here in November 2014. I just say how impressed I was like all other reviews I had very positive reports of this modern but small airport. Staff at immigration are efficient and friendly and no need to "bribe" like you have to in Vietnam and Cambodia. You can exchange US dollars into kyat right after you claim your luggage but before you go through the final custom clearance. On return check in can take a rather long time at about 1pm. Make sure you are checked in online and/or are a gold card or above member of the airlines you choose to fly often they have a special line open for that and staffs check and make sure you are qualified to queue up in there may save a lot of time. Food choice is so-so shopping is outrageously expensive and in US dollars only. Was thinking of buying a little cook book souvenir which marked with 3000 kyat price tag (3 USD) but lady told me they sell for 9 USD end of story there. Other than that overall it's a very pleasant experience.

I've been going back and forth through this airport for 7+ times. The new modern terminal is very efficient except waiting time for baggage at conveyor belt. Overall it's clean staffs are so friendly and the procedures in both arrival and departure are smooth and fast.

Lovely airport. Very efficient and had a fantastic experience on both arrival and departure. The security guard even lifted my suitcase (wasn't heavy either) on the belt for security screening prior to check in. Had a very nice coffee at the cafe prior to heading to the departure gate.

This is really two airports in one. The clean modern efficient International terminal on the one hand and the old dirty chaotic domestic terminal on the other. But the biggest problem of all if you are connecting from one to the other is that you cannot walk between the two. Its only 1000 feet but there's no sidewalk and there's no shuttle either so you are forced to take a taxi!

Generally a nice and well-run airport. Spacious and airy (they'll need some expansion to handle likely growth though) staff are good free (but slow) wifi and most processes run smoothly. Even the taxis are starting to get organised and a shuttle bus is about to start. Two things to watch for - although immigration is fast if you're getting a VOA or collecting a visa ordered by an agency that queue can take hours. Also huge crowds sometimes congregate in the landside part of the terminal (probably extended families) and are a hassle to get through.

I want to join the chorus of glowing reviewers for Yangon Airport. Whilst the runway and surroundings are dated the terminal itself feels thoroughly modern. Bright airy it does lack a little on the side of facilities but it is one of those airports where USD 8 gets you lounge access with free WIFI food and soft drinks. What really impressed me was that after my flight landed I had deplaned gone through customs collected my bag changed money and hit the very nice toilet in 15 minutes. Fantastic.

The whole arrival/departure experience has improved dramatically since I was last here in 2002. A new terminal much friendlier (actually smiling!) immigration staff and facilities such as moneychangers offering decent rates. Overall it was a hassle-free experience. I was pleasantly surprised.

Wonderful airport. Could include more cultural elements in the decor. Immigration and customs very efficient for arrivals and departures. Will be better if the international and domestic terminals can be in one building or with a good connecting bridge or similar sort.
