Modern clean airport. We had cabin baggage only and got through security relatively quickly. Plenty of shops albeit mainly designer brands. A few choices for food upstairs serving hot snacks and soft/alcoholic drinks. Toilets were clean and well stocked. Our gate area was easily found plenty of seats and everything ran smoothly. I was quite impressed with the airport. Plenty of signage and easily guided towards the docks for water taxis etc.

Flew T.A.P. Venice - Lisbon. Bad points - very crowded and nowhere to sit before check-in 2 hours before flight and being bussed to aircraft. Good points were very quick check-in clean tidy air-side with ample comfortable seating (massage chairs excellent) adequate food selection at prices lower than many other airports. This refers to the upper floor area - perhaps the previous bad reports were only applicable to the low cost carriers with separate downstairs check-in?

Travelled yesterday afternoon Saturday 27 September and after an appalling check in experience with EasyJet decided to investigate other reviews of travelers through Venice Airport. Should have done this before we travelled. Unbelievably reviews written in 2012 could have been ones that we experienced in September 2014! Really dreadful airport. The queues were horrendous check in didn't open until 2 hours before flight due to leave but even though people had been in the airport queuing for 1 hour before check in opened it still took us until 15 minutes before the plane was due to leave to get our boarding passes. The queue for EasyJet was the entire length of the airport! Last call for our plane was made and we were still only half way down this queue. Many signs around the airport blaming the Italian government for the hold-ups but the problem was the queues which could have been sorted if there was enough staff on duty! Only 2 staff on duty checking in 3 EasyJet flights to Paris Gatwick and Perugia - easy to work out the total number of passengers standing in line for hours with no Easy Jet staff to speak to or help. And then final annoyance check in staff desk sent us to wrong gate No 28 instead of No 31! Gate 28 was downstairs no 31 upstairs - for so many passengers rushing to get to the gate this was not well received! Toilets dirty no toilet rolls and in one no water for hand washing. Given the huge number of passengers using Venice airport tourists business and cruise ship passengers absolutely terrible way to finish a visit to Venice!

It is hard to know why this airport runs so slowly when it has relatively few flights and passengers. Baggage drop was slow security utterly inefficient with staff making things worse by trying (unsuccessfully) to manage queues. The new security gates have caused chaos. We were in plenty of time there weren't many people passing through security but it took 20 mins. The upstairs cafe operates at snails pace with odd queue arrangements and poor display of pricing. Not surprisingly with such poor service customers choose not to clear their trays as requested. Our EasyJet flight was delayed because the baggage handlers couldn't get the luggage on in time to meet the departure slot. Why? The passengers were all at the gate in good time there was no sign of anyone arriving at the last minute and not much luggage actually going to the hold. As last year the departure slot was missed because of the inefficiency of the airport. This should be a pleasant airport experience. Please don't allow the passenger numbers to grow until the whole place is managed properly!

A short return trip refreshed our views of this airport and showed up some changes over 3 years. With only cabin bags we were quickly through into the concourse where ticket machines have sprung up for onward journeys either by coach or waterbus and the internal Venice waterbuses too. Very convenient to use but don't bother pre-ordering your tickets online. The discount is minimal you get a code number to punch into the machine for your ticket it doesn't recognise it and you have to go searching for the ticket counter. The airport was very busy on the evening of our return but 4 security lanes kept queues short even though they did insist on searching my bag! Airside there are lots of shops and bars but if you want some quiet seating go through to your gate as soon as it shows on the screens. No shops but plenty of seats. Just a shame they don't have free wifi anywhere. Buses required for transfers to our budget flights and there didn't seem to be much use of airbridges anywhere.

Landside airport is a bit confusing even if the intermodality connection to the city is very nice. To arrive to Venice city you walk from airport 5 minutes to Boats (take some cash with you inside Airport as no ATM at the sea gate!). We had another good experience while leaving Venice airside we were invited to a live yoga session with a sweet yoga teacher very simple and useful for having a relaxed boarding. I guess this event was only that day but it has helped to cancel our bad experience at security and to enjoy our time while waiting to go home.

This is a small but busy airport. The covered parking lot is very expensive so you might want to consider the uncovered ones. Check-in is all done by the SAVE personnel (it's the managing company of the airport) not the airlines so they tend to be rather strict with the weight allowances. In many cases I have experienced long lines at check-in and I believe that the check-in area is rather small and can get congested very quickly. Security has improved a lot recently (they have re-designed the check points) and it has become a lot faster. The shopping area is well presented and with a fairly wide choice of boutiques considering the size of the airport. Perhaps it is lacking of chairs. The upper floor also features a smoking room which perhaps is not kept super tidy. The Marco Polo Lounge is OK but not the best of the lounges: access is the same as every other lounge (scanning of the boarding pass) the food offerings are not particularly thrilling (most of the time some cold pizzas some stale sandwiches and some broken up cookies) beverages selection is rather wide instead and it is self service; there is complimentary wifi in the lounge even though the signage indicates that you have to pay; the upkeep of the lounge is OK. Generally the airport needs to be kept a little bit better perhaps.

Arriving at Marco Polo airport was not too bad. Could not find an ATM and none of the water taxis wanted to take credit card so we had to wait a long time until we found one that would. That was the easy part. When departing from the airport we had to wait in line to check in for 1.5 hrs. I'm not sure if this is Aer Lingus's fault or the airports but it was unacceptable. No one was there organizing the 3 lines that they had so no one knew which line was which. Our flight was delayed because it took them so long to check everyone in. Security line was not as bad maybe about a half hour. Seemed like there was no air condition as it was really hot and uncomfortable. No wifi bathrooms were dirty and the two snack shops also had huge lines. Then when your flight is ready they load you onto a bus with no air condition of course packed us in like sardines and then made us stand there for at least 20 minutes before taking us to the plane. Avoid this airport like the plague. Never again.

Marco Polo airport has to be one of the most dirty and un-maintained airports I've been to. No free WiFi and when you try to purchase you get an error. So basically no WiFi. The staff at the Info desk are very helpful and friendly.

Avoid the bank/cash exchange at the arrivals terminal. I asked here if there was an ATM machine to use my travelcard to withdraw the cash which was available on this card for which no bank fees are chargeable from an ATM. The assistant did not know if there was an ATM in the airport. I find this impossible to believe. To use my travelcard here for Euros300 I was charged Euros65 a whopping 16% fee plus another administrative fee. Any visitors arriving at Marco Polo airport with a travelcard should avoid using this facility and look for the ATM which I now know are available in the airport or wait until you arrive in Venice itself.
