Rio De Janeiro Airport customer review

The worst airport I've ever been to. Appalling lack of shopping and dining option in the newer T2 (newer being relative). Ridiculously overpriced dining options where available. $9 for a small plate of soggy fries? Many of the lifts don't work correctly and the entire place has a shabby and unkempt feel. You need to use your credit card to get connected to one of the WIFI networks as there is no shop/stall/information booth selling access vouchers. How this airport is going to deal with both an Olympics and World Cup is beyond me.

Without question the worst airport I have been to. Terminal 1 is like everyone says completely 70s no one around to help. They advertise 15 minutes free wifi but this doesn't exist. No restaurants or bars only a stall selling overpriced sandwiches crisps and chocolates and an overpriced duty free shop. World Cup and Olympics should be interesting!

Terminal 2 is a reasonably modern average building. The service however is appalling. The indicator board showed two flights leaving from the same gate at the same time. When I went to the information desk there were 5 people sitting there chatting to each other and I was completely ignored. The cafe (if you can find it) is overpriced and badly stocked with staff who really cant be bothered. The duty free is a joke. A modern international airport? I don't think so. Get your act together.

I've been here for 9 years and GIG hasn't improved much. T1 is decrepit. T2 is modern but unless you are flying TAM or United you probably wont see it. On my most recent trip I saw some minor construction in T1 arrivals immigration but nothing that looked like real expansion. Baggage/customs unchanged my advice is to try to schedule away from peak arrival/departure traffic. Premium lounges are on theme with the rest of the terminal by that I mean a journey in time to the early 1970's. In all it's a cramped confusing concrete warren.

Rio De Janeiro - Host of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. The airport is a zoo and facilities are decidedly 1970s. I cannot believe Rio will host the two biggest events in the world given these facilities. I found the whole experience at the airport going and coming back tiresome and not much fun.

I was pleasantly surprised. Terminal 2 is quite new and although a bit sparse. Unless I missed a closer option there is a long trek from T2 to the ATMs at the top of T1. However that meant I discovered the viewing deck to see dawn over Rio. Smiles Lounge in T2 is worth the price to pre-book. Calm and generous food and drink.

T2 is clean fairly modern and the check-in area relatively uncramped. A choice of places for shopping and eating outside security. There is a consolidated VIP club in the international departures section for use by passengers on a number of airlines. T2 may not be great but T1 is depressingly dark and cramped. Check-in counters afford less space than you find at many McDonalds. Lines build up and make it difficult even to walk by. In the food court prices are high and quality low. How this airport will handle the big influx of visitors expected for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics I don't know.

Rio's international airport is on an island in Guanabara Bay about 30 mins from downtown during weekday traffic. It has the dingiest terminals of any major airport in the Americas poorly laid out and with absolutely dreadful signage that appears to be deliberately misleading in spots. The arrival experience isn't too bad unless the lines at Passport Control are long but the departure experience is annoying beyond description. It's as though the city determined that departing visitors must depart from Brazil with a sour impression of Rio because that is the result. The airport's motto must be "Keep Them Confused." Never has an airport been less prepared for prime time in this instance when Rio hosts the World Cup and the Summer Olympics in a few short years.

T1 in transfer. Dark and vaguely depressing building severe lack of food and drinks options especially after security: had to queue for 20 minutes to get an overpriced coffee (not exaggerating I actually watched the clock) at the only food and drinks outlet in domestic departures.

Terminal 2. Without a doubt the worst airport I've ever been in. Hot dark and depressing with poor facilities airside. Couple of overpriced shops couple of cafes with limited greasy food and limited seating. They should knock it down and start again - how they aim to cope with the World Cup is beyond me. Check in very long they use antiquated systems. so be prepared and eat before you go - and do your shopping before you get to the airport.
