Melbourne Airport customer review

This is the first impression most overseas visitors will have of our city and in the main its awful. Having just returned from other major cities (perhaps I'm being kind to Melbourne here) in Asia and Europe sadly the Melbourne airport experience just reaffirms how far behind it is. What it needs to improve: size - its small! (even with the intended upgrades it will not improve things especially from an international travelling perspective) customs - the experience was awful there were 2 customs offices checking passports when we returned and we waited over an hour (the non Australian residents line was worse). Its expensive by international standards there is no train station the staff aren't particularly helpful - again by overseas standards the buildings look dated and not modern at all. Given passenger numbers are due to double to 60m in the next few years the issues will only get worse unless a major overhaul is made.

Domestic terminal an utter disgrace. Filthy and broken toilets that are few and far between. On a very busy day how can small and cramped facilities cope? Anyone will tell you that you need more than 3 toilets in each location. I won't be using Melbourne airport again unless I have to. Sydney is much better equipped.

At time of writing - reconstructing/re-improving. Terminal 4 really needs revamp. Hope it gets upgraded to status like Terminals 1-3. Gets the basics right. Free Wifi which was pretty fast - the highlight.

Horrible experience and an embarrassing one as we had overseas guests arriving with us. The whole airport looks dated and dull not a nice welcome to Melbourne long queues in customs were a disgrace and the staff unfriendly. Walking out into the arrivals hall was like stepping back into a third world country crowed and crammed with cheap car rental booths and a nasty cafe and then you step outside dirty traffic rude taxi drivers what a great welcome to Melbourne the government needs to step in and do some thing as it appears the airport management have no idea!

Arrived back in Australia at about 0945 hrs from Singapore. There was about 4 flights that arrived at around the same time people everywhere. Only 4 or 5 of the passport control stations were staffed the queue extended at least 150m. It took us 1.5 hours to finally get through an absolute disgrace when compared to our Asian neighbours less than 5 minutes all desks were staffed! Surely they know when the aircraft are arriving or am I missing something? A total absence of information about where to collect our bags we asked an official who advised us to "look at the board" we replied that we had and there was no information he proceeded to advise us to check with the "baggage services". Fortunately we found the carousel on our way. Goods declared the staff were delightful terrific service in complete contrast to what we had endured. Melbourne Airport is a complete "take" they charge way too much for everything even had to pay for a luggage trolley on domestic. Pay for WiFi a complete joke! Take a look at Bangkok Singapore Narita to name but a few vastly superior in every way.

We departed on an SQ flight just after midnight. Before boarding we spent 35 minutes in a check in queue followed by another 35 minutes in immigration control. I looked for somewhere to eat airside however all of the outlets were either closed or in the throes of closing. I went to the toilet but left immediately as there was paper strewn all over the floor. Went to the other side to the gents' toilet - same thing a disgraceful mess more reminiscent of a developing country rather than a developed one. In a word Tullamarine is a disgrace and an embarrassment to the people of Melbourne. It is privately operated so it would seem that profits are paramount whilst passenger efficiency and comfort are afterthoughts if at all. Come on Tullamarine airport. Look at all of the negative comments and reports on this site and others. It has been going on for years yet you do nothing to ameliorate the disgraceful situation.

Most officious and rudest staff I have met at any airport in the world. Apparently I should tell them I have an artificial hip before going through the scanners so I can instead have a body scan. I have travelled extensively and never been told this. They were more interested in if I had 100 mls of fluids not artificial joints.

Having been used to giant Asian airports MEL feels small and cramped due to the low ceiling that you feel lost in a third rate mall. Lighting was pretty dark shops were really expensive. Security checks were ok but manned by disinterested staff. The waiting area at the gate had power points which are practical. Free internet was OK. Overall a pretty Ok airport but compared to the standards of Changi Hong Kong and Incheon MEL feels very left behind.

Glitzy shops no use to me. I am there to fly somewhere not to buy stuff I can get cheaper elsewhere if I ever wanted any of it. Prices are crazy except for duty free booze. No free wifi! Free wifi is almost universal in airports these days. Very tired plumbing fittings in toilets that badly need refurbishment. They are smelly and unattractive. The set up on arrival is just bizarre. The electronic passport check works well but is offset by interminable wait for luggage and strange queues stretched round and round the carousels before you get shunted into the appropriate queue for the actual Customs check. There is plenty of room for shops but limited room for the supposed main function of an airport getting pax on and off aeroplanes and into the community. It is an appalling 'welcome to Victoria".

Old tired airport with equally aloof and rude staff. Arrived on an Emirates flight at 2am and the transit officer was so rude and abrupt. No smoking lounge for international transit passengers. There are no 24 hour shopping facilities no 24 hour restaurants no 24 hour customer service centres - nothing. Having travelled to many international destinations this airport tick no boxes I am sorry it is that bad.
