"£3 to drive around a building site"

(United Kingdom)

Luton airport is a shambles. You are paying £3 to drive around a building site at 3am in the morning with about a mile of traffic tail back to get into the airport. What a bad experience. Don't use Luton, go to Stansted or Gatwick.

"not too bad"

(United Kingdom)

I had head a lot of bad reviews about Luton airport whilst works were going on but to be fair it was not too bad. Arrived at the airport at 4:15am, bus was there and we were in the terminal within 10 minutes. Check-in was around 30 mins and security around 15 minutes. The lack of food places is a pain because of the works but that's life.

"chaotic mess"

(United Kingdom)

Well, I have been to some pretty appalling airports in my long, long history of flying, going back to the 1970's, but I have never, ever encountered anything even coming close to the utter and sheer disaster that is Luton Airport. This is probably the first time that I have encountered an airport that barely even meets the criteria for being functional. First of all, the traffic grinds to a halt miles before you even reach the airport. When you eventually reach the building site that constitutes the airport, you will search in vain for ages to find a place to park in the chaotic mess that supposedly forms the various tiers of parking. Unless you are in a taxi or otherwise being dropped off, in which case you must pay £2 for the privilege. When you enter the building, you will be amazed at the sheer magnitude of people in front of you. Your first reaction is annoyance, as you wonder why everybody is idly standing around staring into space. And then, to your horror, you will realise that all these people are queueing to go to Departures. Oh yes. It will take you the usual frustrating length of time to drop your baggage off, but then you are going to have to search for the start of the queue to end all queues, which today started in the vicinity of the WizzAir check-in queue. We were advised that the queueing time was around 20 minutes. I have now been queueing now for over an hour, and I am still tearing my hair out wondering if I will make my flight. I have written this review as an alternative to screaming my head off. Do yourself a favour. Spare yourself from this waking nightmare. This is my last ever flight from Luton.

"will never again travel via Luton"

(Germany)

I travelled to Luton from Basel on the 3 August with my family, including 3 small children. The experience was a nightmare. The queues at immigration were abysmal and badly managed. People even got locked in to an automatic gate exiting. Signs of how to get to the car hire were not clear, and we were told that one bus had broken down. We had to wait for half an hour to get the bus. Overall, it took us 2 hours to get from the plane to the rental car. We fly out of Luton in 2 days. I dread putting my family through this experience again. Luton airport is a real embarrassment, please sort this out, but rest assured we will never again fly EasyJet or travel via Luton.

"security had massive queues"

(United Kingdom)

Do not use Luton Airport. What is going on there? We flew 1st August and it was an absolute nightmare. Cannot get to the airport as multiple lanes filter into one. An hour stuck in traffic and car park chaotic. Baggage check in was over an hour. Security had massive queues. Only just made our flight with minutes to spare. Many people missed flights. My advise would be to use any airport other than Luton. I'm dreading returning to the airport as other reviews have said, the return is just as bad. We return Sunday. If the management think we do not have a choice, think again.

"families are having to sit on the floor"

(United Kingdom)

We travel out of this airport on a regular basis, however is from necessity not choice. Every time we've used it this year it has been a far worse experience than the previous trip and that is saying something. I booked fast track security last month and needn't have bothered, despite only having a small handbag with nothing I shouldn't have, I was held up by the belt not working and the extremely rude member of staff who couldn't have cared less. Once in the departure lounge, if it can be called a lounge, the real hell begins - where are the seats? It is the only airport we travel from with this problem, families are having to sit on the floor and people are literally crowded into this hot, ridiculous space that you have to experience to believe. What are the management doing? The reviews have been so bad for such a long time, surely they must be ashamed to admit they are responsible. Can they not see for themselves the misery they are creating? As for trying to eat or drink in comfort, then forget it. I asked for a gin tonic at the bar near gate 7 and was told "we ain't got ice!" So I didn't bother and really after looking at the filthy state of the bar area, was probably for the best. I could go on but really would just be repeating what so many others have said. The final sting is having to pay £ 3 now to drop off and pick up - unbelievable. The best advice would be if you don't have to fly from this awful airport, then don't.

"clean and easy to get around"

(United Kingdom)

Having read the reviews for Luton airport I was very worried, but needlessly so. We arrived to drop of our car at meet and greet, within 10 minutes we were heading into the airport. There was one queue for the bag drop, so you didn't get stuck in the slow queue behind a problem traveller. 20 minutes later we were going through security, plenty of time for lunch before heading to the departure gate. Flight was on time. Same coming home, no queues at passport control, quickly through to baggage collection, bags came out swiftly. Phoned meet and greet, our cars were there within 15 minutes. The airport was a bit chaotic with scaffolding and construction, but this did not have any detrimental affect on our journey. The airport was well organised, clean and easy to get around. I would definitely travel from Luton again.

"place is clearly overcrowded"

(United Kingdom)

I had the misfortune to be seeing someone off from this airport yesterday 3 August 2016. The whole site has a temporary, makeshift feel about it, with hoardings, temporary surfaces underfoot and teeming crowds. I was appalled and then infuriated when charged £10 per hour to park. How can this be justified? My partner who was flying to Inverness found the conditions for passengers to be just as unsatisfactory: she was herded into the departure gate area with no seats and a late arriving plane. I flew from this airport in June with my daughter and found the facilities for passengers stretched at 6 am with standing room only in the departure lounge. How can this be safe? The place is clearly overcrowded so how can the runways cope? What is the Civil Aviation Authority doing about this? On leaving the Airport, the queue of traffic to get in was about half a mile long of solid traffic. I was grateful I had arrived just in time to miss this further misery. I will avoid this airport if at all possible.

"someone got their priorities wrong"

(United Kingdom)

Just when I thought Luton airport could not get any worse it did just that on Monday 1st August. We had arrived on a delayed flight from Milan (not Luton's fault) and just wanted to get home. We phoned for the minibus to take us to our car and left the arrivals hall to wait for it. It was pouring with rain and quite cold and it seemed that the queues for the buses were longer than usual and as is normal at Luton no shelter for anyone. We made our way to the pick up point, again the whole area is open to the elements. Why do they not have a covered walkway? We stood in the rain getting thoroughly soaked along with countless others. There was a very small shelter which could fit about 4 people but that was the only cover. There was chaos where the vehicles were coming in to park as the traffic went down to one lane and because everyone was soaked cars were stopping all over the place to pick people up. When our minibus finally arrived the driver was very apologetic but explained that the queue to get into the area was backing up all down the road. The area is being dug up all over the place. Surely it would have been better to do it gradually rather than all at once. I have travelled to many airports in the world and I am still of the opinion that Luton is still the worst for looking after and caring about its customers. Hopefully these "improvements" will make a difference. The priority seems to have been to create more shops where the goods are always more expensive than the high street rather than the access to the airport. However because of the delays people won't have time to shop. Someone got their priorities wrong.

"what a shambles of an airport"

(United Kingdom)

What a shambles of an airport. Its main purpose seems to be to extract as much money out of everyone whether they are flying or not, while not providing a a civilised service. Paying to pick up and drop off in a building site? The arrivals hall is dirty and depressing. What does this say to visitors to the UK? Come and get fleeced in a third world environment. Actually, that is doing a disservice to third world airports. A site and service that bad would be condemned and shut down in any other public service context. I will never use Luton Airport again nor recommend it to anyone.
