Well I should have known better. Came home from Italy last night. Greeted with 1.5 hour wait to get through border controls. Apparently due to excess demand because of the delays caused by French traffic controllers on strike. I knew this was going to happen on Tuesday surely someone might have had the foresight to put extra people on the check points to help ease the situation. At 1 point. 3 flights queuing and 5 yes just 5 check points open. Not the front line guys problems.

The Airport has quickly changed under its new ownership from being the best London airport to the worst. In particular the new reorganisation of the departures lounge is appalling - forcing all passengers to walk through the duty free shopping is causing delays and gives no opportunity for people to relax. It is a cynical and blatant attempt to increase shopping revenue at the cost of customer convenience. Are they running an airport or IKEA? The transfer shuttle is late and constantly only 1 compartment. Everything about the airport has deteriorated. It is a miracle that there are not punch-ups between passengers trying to get to their flights.

Coming back on a late flight started queuing at 0030 and got through passport control 1 hour later! Only 4 staff to screen thousand of passengers many with young children who cant be even carried on buggies as the airlines don't return these immediately after landing. It would make a lot of sense to have a fast track lane for families with children as would make the whole process a lot faster. I like this airport as convenient to Cambridge but it is really understaffed at customs! btw there's many e-passport gates but only a few work at a time so not much better there either.

I don't think I have been to a worse Airport in the UK and actually I've realised how could some of our regional Airports in the UK are! This airport is in a clear sorry state I generally enjoy flying and don't mind Airports for the most part but the experience here was utterly joyless. Firstly the Terminal as you walk in it is dark dingy and cramped with poor signage - not very clear where particular check-in desks are located. Then there is the zoo that is security I've been to third-world countries where security has been managed better - it was chaotic with enormous snaking queues which barely any staff controlling the masses of people going through security or to give any assistance. If you were running late you would have been stuck and most likely miss your flight. Once through security airside is no better again dark dingy and cramped with barely any natural light entering the building. Surprisingly there were some nice food outlets like a Leon but the environment is so poor and devoid of any joy you wouldn't want to linger here for long. At the Gate it is even worse decrepit waiting area with gates cramped next to each other and only a common seating area to wait for multiple gates which was obviously not enough room for the 3 flights taking off at the same time. This Airport clearly needs some serious investment - it hasn't got any hope of competing with the likes of Gatwick and Heathrow and is already at a disadvantage because of its location I would have thought some effort would have been made to actually encourage more passengers. I'm sorry to say but this is the first time an Airport has actually put me off from flying - it is unacceptable in this country to have third-world like airport especially when it is supposed to be serving what is the capital of the world. I will stick to Gatwick Heathrow and City if I fly or the train which was the alternative as was the case for this domestic trip.

An absolute disgrace in departure security today two days before Easter holidays I had to queue for an hour to get through hundreds of crowded stressed and angry passengers with no help just awful shouting security staff at the security belts. I appreciate they have to upgrade or fix the security belts but why only have 3 belts open at such a busy holiday time! Total madness. There were zero staff controlling the masses of people just snaking round for an hour trying to get through. Nobody to help or fast track an office of 3 people just looking at the scene. Useless announcements telling us what to do in order not to miss our flight which is a joke the ridiculous queues cause that themselves! The staff at the belts were curt and abrupt I was told by a remake to lift my own trays as her back hurt. Flights were missed mine almost and even when I tried to go through to the front as my flight was boarding a very rude female told me to go back it wasn't her fault of course not! Silly me nobody takes responsibility here for chaos and we are just the mugs that have to endure such rubbish service. Absolute shambles and disgrace to be British today. It is not rocket science just queue control surely.

Having to fly from Stansted airport is a truly unpleasant experience. We had to add an extra bag at the last minute which involved paying Ryanair a surcharge. After waiting about 45 minutes at the help desk and watching staff disappear for about 10 minutes at a time or watching them have long phone chatty conversations and apparently achieving nothing I complained. This was greeted with rude dismissal by a young women manning the desk. We only managed to get the bag paid for by going to a different aisle. This is not service. We were then subjected to aggressive rudeness at the security check by a member of staff managing the supply of boxes for the scanner. In this case I made a compliant to his manager who appeared to take it seriously. Finally there was a walk through a huge shopping mall largely void of customers to arrive at an overcrowded departures area. The problems here are compounded by only announcing the departure gate 15 minutes before closure thus keeping passengers in the food and shopping areas as long as possible. This then results in a dash to the departure gate. Stansted airport is both a stressful and chaotic place. Never again!

Travelled recently and on arrival had to wait 1.5 hours before our Ryanair Bag drop opened. There was no seating available near the bag drop facilities and the only place to sit was on the heating vents near the windows - not acceptable. There should be some seating available for passengers whilst waiting in this area. We are both in our 70s and standing for that time is really beyond our comfort zone.

During the days of BAA there were always queues at busy times going through security checking. However the longest I had ever to wait was around 30 minutes. Today (1st of April 2015) I waited 50 minutes and was still nowhere near the front of the queue. If I had not complained to one of the check-in managers I would have had to wait for over 1 hour and would inevitably have missed my flight. In-fact there were people in the queue who when their flight was checked had missed their flight. Why was this you might ask. Well when I approached one member of staff I was told it was down to the volume of people! Come on Manchester Airports group its the Easter break! The reason was that out of 18 or so security check in positions only 6 where opened and manned. I was then told they just can't get the staff as nobody wants to work there well which is it? When asked whether the flights would be held a member of staff said the airlines were aware of the situation which was not true as when I arrived within seconds of my flight being closed nobody at that desk knew anything about the problem at the security check-in. Stansted was sold to Manchester Airport Group to break-up a supposed monopoly BAA had over flights and passengers. This was supposed to be for our benefit so we were notâripped off and there was more competition. On the contrary. Costs at Stansted have rocketed since the take-over and the whole customer experience has plummeted. With little or no choice of airports living close to Norwich I am probably stuck with Stansted. However I'll think twice about whether I could do my journey some other way in the future.

I live in Spain and work in London so travel every week. Unfortunately my wife booked a number of early morning Ryanair flights from Stansted. Security is the proverbial cattle market with long queues shuffling up and down seemingly endless rows to go through. I have a Priority Pass to the private lounge which made the experience just about bearable. The lounge was stupidly located at the end of one of the pods which was a nightmare if your plane was departing from one of the others. However this one little joy was terminated in January when they allowed it to close before they had even commenced building its replacement in the main terminal. My wife came to England for a week and got the whole 5am Stansted experience she has promised never to book me through Stansted again when these flights run out. The Airport management is a shambles and it is without doubt the worst airport I have ever had the misfortune to fly from.

If you want an inefficient airport that is now so lacking in basic functionality it is no longer fit for purpose then look no further than Stansted Airport. Rather than concentrate on providing a service appropriate for an air passenger Stansted airport has now switched its function to operate seemingly as a Retail Park. Sure there are flights but it's a gruelling and deeply unpleasant mission to catch one. Passengers stand in queue after queue at inadequately manned check in desks before being shouted at and herded like cattle through confused multiple queues for a chaotic baggage check system. Passengers then find themselves lost in a long meandering and confused shopping mall experience squeezing amongst gaps in perfume counters to try and make their way to the departure lounge. Passengers are then spewed stressed and exhausted into an overwhelming chaotic and confused departure lounge crammed with a plethora of eating opportunities yet without sufficient seating clear signage for toilets or even departure gates. The passenger has to physically battle their way through a sea of stressed fellow travellers aimlessly wondering around this chaotic mess in an attempt to find a plane. It's an absolute appalling mess lacking basic functionality in need of urgent review.
