London Gatwick Airport customer review

I do not live too far from LGW so this airport has always been an obvious choice for me having grown up with it. I cannot honestly say I have had any real bad experiences here. Queues for security are a bit hit and miss depending on the season but I do believe things have generally improved. Facilities shops restaurants etc. I would say are very good. A wide selection and never normally a problem getting a seat at your chosen eatery. In the UK this airport has always been my first choice.

A mixed report recently. I arrived very early in the morning but BA Club Europe check in took 30 seconds. The priority security lane was not open but security took less than 5 minutes and was efficiently run. Coming back late at night immigration was well staffed to cope with several planes arriving at once but baggage handling was slow - we waited for about 45 minutes so not too good.

I arrived at the South Terminal at about 10pm on a Thursday night. The queues for passport control went beyond the passport area into the hot/non-air conditioned corridors. The queues were so extensive and with two corridors funnelling into one small area that it was not possible to move with people shoving and jostling for any space they could find. We moved with the flow being pushed along by the crowd of people a very dangerous situation. No staff to control the crowds until into the main passport control area itself. A third world experience that reflects poorly on Gatwick and the UK.

Years ago I promised to never fly in or out of Gatwick again. I was routed there on a Qantas Emirates code share. Gatwick has been advertising how wonderful it is now. I thought I would try it. Gatwick train station still woefully inadequate. Amazing congestion. Were they never expecting any one to use it? Did they not anticipate that people might have luggage. Shuttle to North terminal quick and efficient. Emirates lounge does not give access to Qantas Club passengers even though they've paid for lounge access. (This is an emirates issue not a Gatwick issue - though it does make the whole experience seem cheap. There is lounge access for example at Heathrow.) Passport and security check much faster than it used to be. Concourse amazingly crowded and air conditioning weak. Cafes all full and noisy. Thankfully today no screaming kids - though I don't want to tempt fate. Gatwick underwhelms and under delivers as ever. Stick to Heathrow.

Having traveled to Gatwick twice this month I can honestly say that it is a high standard airport to travel from and a very close contender to Heathrow. Both of terminals are in good condition and under the new ownership is being improved very fast and effectively. Check In and Security is fast most of the time. There seems to be more shops and better restaurants in the North Terminal which is bigger but the South is becoming just as good. One thing is that gates do take a good amount of time to come on screen but they are never far away. Boarding is always doing using a Jetway. On arrival deboarding is speedy and takes you straight to immigration. The wait generally is no longer than 10 mins and with the new e booths it is getting quicker. Baggage reclaim can take some time but where doesn't really? Not to mention the cleanliness it is very impressive! Overall Gatwick is the better airport in London and because of its location and destinations it is always getting bigger and better. Service is always helpful.

Whoever designed Gatwick South Terminal should have had his pencils confiscated before he was let loose with a piece of paper. You enter not via a door but by lift and if you are slow or handicapped and it's busy you could be there for evermore trying to get in assuming you're not run over in the rush. Following this you are confronted with a contender for the world's slowest travelator. Then the next attractions you can look forward to a totally confusing and aimless series of ramps stairs and escalators leading you pointlessly up hill and down dale at random through the obstacle course of check-in security shops restaurants etc finally should you have the stamina to departure gate. Puts one in mind of the Grand Old Duke of York. I guess it's a marketing ploy that leads you THROUGH the duty-free shop on reaching airside - doesn't work with me. A final warning don't get caught short - leave yourself with sufficient time for the walk to the toilets. Paradoxically Gatwick North is one of the better terminals I've encountered.

Really disappointed with Gatwick. In fact with all the airports I have flown from in the UK this has to be the worst. Firstly it's awkwardly located SW of M25. There is no where near enough seating / facilities to cater for the high volume of passengers. The toilet queues are impossible especially with children. The upper tier departure lounge is better equipped though still again there just isn't enough seating for the volumes of people. The best aspect for us was the premier parking / check in. Which I'd personally recommend as it took the stress out of parking - it took a minute to get from my car to check in. We then went on to express check in. All in all I won't use Gatwick again. I'd rather travel further / pay the extra.

Recently used Gatwick to travel to Bangkok via Dubai with Emirates and I have to say I couldn't believe how nice it was compared to horrible old Heathrow! Check-in was straightforward and the North terminal wasn't crowded at all. There was ample space and it was very clean! Its also well sign-posted - I had to use the shuttle to get from the South to the North terminal and I haven't used Gatwick in a long time so was a little anxious about where everything was but turns out everything was dead simple to find! Security was security and staff weren't that friendly but I wasn't there for more than 5 minutes so no worries there. Departure lounge is a little disappointing as it didn't have as many shops and restaurants as I had anticipated but as an airport that offers mainly European routes you can't really expect it to be like Heathrow. Though saying that I think they are planning on adding more shops and restaurants. Departure gate took forever to appear on screen but once it was there it was a fairly short walk to it from the departure lounge and then after 10 mins at gate we were told to board the plane which was brilliant as I wanted to just sit back and relax. On the way back to Gatwick - passport queues were horrendous but they were moving steadily rather than being a complete stand still so was through in about half an hour. Overall very happy with the experience at Gatwick and would definitely recommend it! Wish it'd fly to more destinations outside Europe though as I'd much prefer it to Heathrow!

Returned to Gatwick from Naples on June 21st. I have been using this airport for many years and found it very comfortable to arrive on the ground floor buy a newspaper chocolate and a bottle of water I also could stop to have coffee at the bar. Since I need to take a bus to Oxford I was also able to check with the Bus Enquiries counter about any delays. On this occasion it was not helpful to be directed down a winding roadway arrive at the bus stop and be told by someone waiting there that the bus was due to be 30 mins late which someone had told them more than 30 mins before. In the past a small screen above the stop always indicated the expected time of arrival - that no longer exists. Also no shops bar or any facilities other than car-hire offices are on the ground floor. By this time I had a very small amount of water in my bottle that I'd taken on the flight (it was a very hot day) no newspaper to occupy me on the bus nowhere to buy anything at all. I had already waited some 15-20 minutes for steps to arrive at the aeroplane followed by some 20 minutes for baggage arrival. The last time I made this journey was after new year 2013. This new layout was a surprise and a big nuisance since with the time of bus arrival was unknown I could not risk taking a lift back upstairs to the shopping area in Departures. For anyone who does not speak English it must be extremely difficult and for me it made me very uncomfortable. It cannot be impossible to indicate that once one leaves the upper floors there are no more facilities available. Does no-one consider human convenience and comfort in this places?

Not a brilliant airport. I discovered the secret to free wifi. You get a half hour free trial with Boingo when it runs out simply sign back in with another email address and continue surfing! Sockets everywhere say "not for public use" but maybe because it was the middle of the night no one stopped me plugging my laptop in. Toilets were the cleanest of any airport I've seen.
