Guangzhou Airport customer review

(Australia)

For an international airport that has travellers in transit from many worldwide destinations the facilities here are poor. As with other comments we were also charged $10 each for a small coffee there were only 2 facilities to get a coffee from one time in my life that I would actually welcome competition from someone like McDonalds. We had about a 3.5 hour transit between our flights from Vancouver to Oz and let me tell you there is very little to do! Nowhere comfortable to sit (apart from the floor) coffee rip off (see above) shops were poor with bored looking staff. The terminal stank of cigarette smoke from the indoors smoking area that wafted throughout the terminal. My tip if you have to transit through - take your own cup and tea bag/instant coffee and help yourself to the hot water. If all else fails organise a flight for the next day and stay over at a hotel. Maybe a little more thought for those passengers transiting through the airport would be an improvement especially when competing with airports such as Changi.

My family went through this airport on the way to LAX firstly we had no Yuan available so bought 4 x 8oz coffees with my card which came to AUD$36.99. Even at the airport I did the cost of the coffee at AUD$9.00 each so wasn't far off. This is extortionate even by airport prices. As per previous post from another traveller it's a grotty place too and we were subjected to the same exit from the plane down some wet stairs in the pouring rain. If you can avoid this airport then do so. Otherwise if you must travel through here then stick to buying goods through the vending machines do not buy the coffee!

Guangzhou Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

Came through in transit from London to Brisbane with China Southern. Plane parked up to an airbridge over near a large modern-looking terminal but we were shoved straight out and down some uncovered and slippery stairs in the pouring rain to a bus to take us over to the terminal which I presume the other reviews here are referring to. The place is pretty horrible - tired and stained carpet throughout not properly lit (in parts it looked like it was running off emergency back-up generator lighting) or heated bathrooms poorly cleaned - and expensive. No one takes any sort of card payment and the cash exchange place charges a $10 flat-fee commission. Food is typical airport prices and then some. Restaurant staff abrupt and had to be prompted to bring the change after paying. The only redeeming thing was the 10-yuan Tsingdao available from the vending machines although you have to have the cash first. Free WiFi requires a Chinese mobile number in order to active although the Blenz cafe does have WiFi available for customers (password on the menu on the table). Considering changing my return flight so I don't have to go through this place and never will book another flight which takes me anywhere near this terminal.

Stop-over here for 5 hours was a nightmare to me! Seriously! The departure hall was quite small for a big city as Guangzhou. The seat was small and uncomfortable and of course I could not sleep on it. The free WiFi was available but it required me to provide a Chinese mobile number to access which I didn't have and had no idea why they had to control like that. Restaurants were pricey but I had to eat because I was too hungry. The food was cold and so bad! The services including the staff's attitude were bad too. I saw the "Drinking water" sign and yes there was free water but the cup was only 30-50ml. Then I was wandering around to see if there had something positive about the airport that I might skip. Unfortunately I found nothing! The only exchange currency counter overcharged with very low rate and high fee (CNY60 per transaction which around US$10)! Never come back to this airport unless I'd have to visit Guangzhou!

Guangzhou Airport customer review

(Canada)

Having travelled through Asia quite significantly I was sceptical of the awful reviews I had read about Baiyun airport. Let me tell you that much to my dismay they are all true. The airport is absolutely filthy. The entire airport is carpeted - including the restaurants - and the carpet is utterly disgusting. The shops are terrible and the food selection is meagre but nothing absolutely nothing is worse than the bathrooms. I have used my fair share of washrooms in China but the women's in the departure lounge is the filthiest most vile bathroom I have ever come across. There are western style toilets but the stench is enough to make your eyes water. Per feedback from other reviewers a cup of green tea (tea bag and water) costs $13 USD. A 250mL bottle of Evian was $5 USD. All of the staff are miserable and rude. There is no cash machine so bring Yuen if you want to be able to eat or drink. The lounges are for China Southern's elite passengers and you cannot pay in. Who would choose to fly China Southern so often that they achieve elite stays is beyond me. I will never return to this airport if I can help it. It is shocking to think that this awful place exists just a hop away from beautiful Hong Kong Airport.

This month my mother and I were flying to England with China Southern stopping at this airport. When we got there it was extremely hot (no air-conditioning). We tried to get something to eat and the money wasn't a problem because we brought yuan. The food was extremely over priced. The thing that wasn't ok were things like the smoking rooms being left open and when you needed to go the bathroom you had to walk right past it! Half of the toilets were literally pits. I felt extremely uncomfortable so waited ages to get a normal toilet. The wifi is also a joke because you need a Chinese sim card or number to access it. For people in transit for many hours why would they have Chinese sims? I wouldn't recommend this airport.

This is my 4th time each time has been the same. Arrived from Sydney to Kunming typical no communication from staff just told to wait for customs clearance to allow further travel for domestic flight in an upstairs area. Toilet is a squat type! I had 1 hour until the domestic flight. Had to wait 45 minutes for customs clearance then had to recheck in at security for domestic flight. No such thing as a secure transfer from international to domestic. There has all ways been an electric airport bus to take me from international to domestic terminal. Just make my domestic flight each time which is normally delayed. Return from Kunming to Sydney via Guangzhou is always efficient. Domestic to International seems easier and well sign posted. Never seen any rats. Toilets are typical of China.

Worst airport I have been in. Coffee and food outrageously overpriced. Very little selection in shops - no electronics. We got stuck there because of weather for 12 hours on the way to New Zealand. Dreaded spending any time there on the way back. We will be avoiding this airport in the future.

We were in business class and were escorted through the airport to the business class transit lounge by a smartly dressed attendant the food drinks seating and free Wifi were excellent. The whole of the area was spotless with clean toilets and showers a private bedroom could also be booked for a longer transit period if required. As we are returning to NZ tomorrow from Heathrow we are looking forward to the same great service afforded to us on our outward journey.
