"a chaotic nightmare"

(Ireland)

Trip Verified | We were waiting, on arrival, (on 1 December, on Ryanair flight from Dublin) outside, in very cold weather for about an hour for passport control. We were also "herded" like animals on departure. Returning my hired car was a nightmare, confusing signage meant several passengers didn't know where to leave the car, or where the hire office was. The experience was a good sample of how not to treat people. We pay for service at the airport in our ticket price, but in my view, we should not just get a refund, but be compensated for distress. A chaotic nightmare.

"had to walk a virtual marathon"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | I flew to Carcassonne from Glasgow with Ryanair just when they were having all their major problems about cancellations. Fortunately my flight was pretty much on time with only one drunk man aboard. The flight was pretty standard for Ryanair and was plesent enough. When we landed, we all had to walk a virtual marathon to get to the arrivals hall in the 35 degree heat. Then once we finally made it there we had to wait over an hour in a stuffy baggage hall before our luggage arrived. The next problem I faced was at the car hire depot. I had to wait over half an hour before someone turned up at the desk. A week later when I'm heading home is where the worst part happened. Even though it was only early afternoon half my flight back to Glasgow seemed to be heavily intoxicated and sitting in a tiny departures lounge with only one cafe was quite possibly the worst experience of my life. When I got on the plane we didn't take off for another hour because the cabin crew couldn't get the door shut. The 2 and a half hour flight home was possibly the longest few hours of my life due to the noise and commotion from the drunks. The only thing I got out this holiday was to never fly Ryanair again

"failed to embrace the 21st century"

(France)

Carcassonne airport is about the best example of how France has failed to embrace the 21st century. If ever they wanted to give themselves a funny name a la John Lennon airport, then they should called themselves Clochemerle. The airport is essentially a shack with a runway - as everyone points out in reviews here, the staff are very friendly but friendliness does not overcome crass inefficiency. Ryanair now market "Business Class +" and take money for the "service" but it does not work here. With two flights departing about an hour apart, the baggage drop desk could not cope and the paid for "Fast track" service which is printed on the check in voucher evaporated. It took 40 minutes standing in a crawling queue just to drop off baggage. My advice to anyone wishing to avoid standing in line is to delay baggage drop until they start shouting for passengers for your flight and then you can jump to the head of the queue from the seat where you have been biding your time. For reasons best known to the airport and Ryanair, the return plane parked as far away from the arrivals hut as was possible and passengers were made to walk the length of the runway in the blazing afternoon heat. Mercifully the torrential rain that France endured that week had passed. There is one carousel to serve all incoming flights although to be fair, there are aren't that many. But the carousel holds about 20 bags so they rely of people getting their bags off the belt in order to put more on. The advantage then is that being only a shack, it is very quick to get out. Now we come to the free wi-fi service. I tried to set this up whilst waiting in the bag-drop queue but after 40 minutes gave up until inspiration struck. You have to register with your name and email. But when you try to continue it insists you must accept their terms or conditions by ticking a box which does not seem visible. Finally I tried clicking the box which said I would accept spam emails from them and this worked. Overall, if you want a taste of Clochemerle, this is your airport.

"great local airport"

(United Kingdom)

Great local airport. Open all year around (at the moment) for Ryanair flights (they don't fly in the winter from the other regional airports). The restaurant (sadly) had shut at the end of the summer, but the cafe was still open. However they were breaking ground on a new terminal (I didn't get the the completion date) so I expect a decent size expansion in the coming years - not sure how I feel about that, but good for the local economy.

Carcassonne Airport customer review

(Ireland)

I found Carcassonne Airport to be very easy to use. My mother who has limited mobility has difficulty walking or standing for long periods so Carcassonne Airport which is tiny suited us very well. We didn't see a shop but we had something to eat there which was adequate. The taxi rank is just outside the building. We found Carcassonne Airport the taxi service and the Cite to be so easy to navigate and so hassle-free that we're going again this year. I would recommend Carcassonne and the airport for a short break as so little time is wasted at the airport.

Carcassonne Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

Very small airport but that can be an advantage as it was for us. By the time we had cleared customs our bags were through and in 5 minutes were at the car hire office 50 feet away and on the road in minutes. On return no queuing to check-in and security took no time at all. Had good breakfast in restaurant upstairs. Only problem might be if more than one flight arriving or departing at the same time. Only complaint not enough seats once airside.

Carcassonne Airport customer review

Blast from the past with these reviews. I've recently been using Salvaza again as an alternative method to get from Liverpool to Toulouse though unfortunately it's getting worse. Nathan Fotheringill mentions in his review that he doesn't know how they would cope with two flights at the same time. The answer is "with great difficulty" Queuing up outside to check in was bad enough in the heat wouldn't fancy it in the rain at all. This was last Sunday (1st Aug 2010) with a Porto flight at 1530 & Liverpool one at 1535. 2 hours was only just enough time to get through the mayhem caused by the lack of signage and frustrated staff. Incidentally I'm not blaming the staff but the management who should seriously think of investing in this place before everyone starts abandoning it. Back to the old Manchester to Toulouse bit again. A bit more expensive but a lot more efficient.

Carcassonne Airport customer review

Don't expect too much of this little airport but it is friendly and the departures lounge has expanded recently. At one time the only facilities were the toilets once you were through the security but now there is a vending machine for soft drinks and chocolate etc. The restaurant (upstairs) has a good menu and they are fully aware of the flight times so you don't have to wait for hours for your meal. There is one small shop (outside the security check area) which doesn't help if you want to take those items through with you that are ordinarily banned. The security staff also apply an interesting interpretation on what is dangerous: we had a travel iron confiscated from our hand luggage as it could be used as a blunt instrument. On the way back we could have bought one at Stansted - presumably traveling from the UK we weren't likely to brain anyone with it.
