Monarch Airlines Economy Class Flight Review London Gatwick to Male
DEPARTURE SERVICE
Check-in was quick but despite it being our honeymoon (noted on our booking) and the fact we
were at the airport nearly 3 hours before the flight left they couldn't seat us together. very
bad seat management by Monarch.
CABIN APPEARANCE
Relatively clean, plane was definitely old. I nearly ended up with a drink in my lap as the
pull down tray wasn't horizontal - I had to keep it propped up with my knee when eating. The
plane was clearly quite old.
SEATING COMFORT
Absolutely dreadful. Seats were very cramped both in terms of width and the amount of leg
room. I found it cramped and I am petite (5' 3" and size 8!) my husband who is 6 foot but slim
built was uncomfortable.
ONBOARD CATERING
Main meal was ok, except that they didn't have a vegetarian meal for me despite the fact I had
written confirmation this had been requested - was given a premium economy meal. Breakfast was
awful - about 2 grapes, 2 slices of melon and a small blueberry muffin. No free drinks at all
and only one drinks service during the whole 10 hour flight on way out. Everything has to be
paid for.
INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT
First time in years I can remember going on a long haul flight where there isn't your own
individual PTV entertainment system. Once over the shock of this, the film was ok, if a little
old (usually airlines have films that have only just come out of the cinema). Had to pay £2.50
for headphones which were a very poor quality.
CABIN STAFF SERVICE
Mixture, some were quite good, particularly on the flight home. Was appalled when my husband
asked for a glass of water (bearing in mind there was just one drinks service) and was told he
had to walk all the way to back of plane (we were very near the front). Never been told that
before.
FLIGHT ARRIVAL
Deplaning and collecting baggage was reasonable at Male, but on return at Gatwick it was
awful. Huge delay with baggage - we didn't get ours until 1hr and 15mins after our plane
touched down. Not good considering we were exhausted after a 2.5 hour delay and 10hr 40min
flight.
CUSTOMER TRIP VERDICT
Absolutely awful. Will never fly Monarch again and would not recommend to anyone. Basically a
budget airline at a non-budget airline price.
