Hawaiian Airlines First Class Flight Review Hilo to Los Angeles via Honolulu
DEPARTURE SERVICE
The service is non-existent within the Hilo and Honolulu terminals themselves, and the
Honolulu inter-island terminal (also used by Hawaiian Airlines mainland USA flights) is in
very poor condition: dirty, dark, and God-awful food.
CABIN APPEARANCE
The cabins on both the 717 used on the Hilo-Honolulu segment and the 330-200 on the Honolulu-
Los Angeles segment were immaculate. Seats were in good condition on the older 717 and were
brand new on the A330-200, which has only been in service since April 2010.
SEATING COMFORT
The seating on the 717 is standard with 31" pitch in economy and 37" in first and plenty
adequate for a 40-minute flight. The seating on the 330-200 is 2x2x2 in first, with a 44"
pitch. The cradle-style seats only recline to about 140 degrees which is not conducive to
sleeping but adequate for a 4.5 hour flight. The seat controls are non-electronic, which
makes it a bit difficult to maneuver the seat, especially the legrest.
ONBOARD CATERING
Hawaiian Airlines is the only remaining U.S. airline which serves complimentary meals in all
classes on domestic flights. First class meals are of high quality and served on China,
crystal glassware and steel flatware. The "midnight snack" on the red-eye HNL-LAX flight
consisted of a seafood cake with a tartar/holandaise sauce, green salad and passionfruit
tartlet. Beverages were available on request throughout the flight, but the FA's did not pass
the cart through the aisles to avoid waking sleeping passengers.
INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT
The new A330-200 has in-seat monitors in all classes, and entertainment consisted of 12-15
movies, 12-15 TV programmes, plus a selection of 150-200 audio tracks in several categories.
The variety is above average for U.S. airlines but lags behind most other international
carriers. The console comes out from below the seat in first class.
CABIN STAFF SERVICE
FA's were friendly, courteous and professional to first class passengers. We travelled with
our 9-month old and the FA offered to warm his bottle without us having to ask
FLIGHT ARRIVAL
Deplaning was swift and orderly. Baggage arrived at LAX within 15-20 minutes after arrival at
the gate.
CUSTOMER TRIP VERDICT
Hawaiian's first class is superior to that of most other U.S. airlines but lags a bit behind
most leading international carriers in terms of seat quality and onboard entertainment. The
FA's were a delight to deal with.
