Monarch Airlines Economy Class Flight Review Tenerife to Manchester
DEPARTURE SERVICE
Check in and boarding at Tenerife Reine Sofia airport was OK. We had to queue for 40 minutes to
check in, but this is about not exceptional, and we have in the past had to queue for more than an
hour. Security and boarding were fine, and the plane departed on time.
CABIN APPEARANCE
The cabin was clean and tidy, the cabin crew well presented.
SEATING COMFORT
Everyone commented: these were the narrowest, most cramped, claustrophobic seats we had ever had to
endure. I paid a premium for an extra leg room seat (very few on this plane) and was so cramped that
I measured it: it was 16" wide; seat 9G. Tons of leg room because they are the main exit row but so
tight in width as to be unbearable. The standard seats were also incredibly tightly packed. Do any
other airlines shoehorn 361 pax onto the A300?
ONBOARD CATERING
Adequate
INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT
In flight entertainment was good; a modernish feature film (Marley and Me) and normal TV shorts. No complaints.
CABIN STAFF SERVICE
Good cabin staff; the crew member sat in the jump seat opposite me was particularly pleasant and
presentable (especially considering she'd been working for 14 hours as we touched down. This
aircraft was hit by lightning minutes before we landed. Absolute praise and thanks to the pilot for
getting us down safely.
FLIGHT ARRIVAL
Deplaning was delayed by a faulty tunnel/gate at the airport, but we began disembarking maybe 10
mins after we came to a stop at the gate. Luggage seemed to take quite a long time to reach the
carousels - we were waiting maybe 25 mins to collect our final piece of baggage after arriving in the Hall.
CUSTOMER TRIP VERDICT
An OK flight but I wouldn't travel Monarch again until they withdraw these elderly planes. Outbound
flight in extra leg room seats on an A321 were so much comfier; we were scheduled to return on the
same aircraft, but the airline switched to the A-300. The flights were not cheap, and other than the
budget airlines (and the horrendous scramble for seats therewith) the choice is limited, but never
have I been so squashed and uncomfortable on an aircraft.
