DEPARTURE

Good service overall. Check-in was efficient and helpful, with a special security screening line, though the regular lines at NRT are seldom crowded. Still, a nice offer. United's First Class lounge at NRT is quite nice, new, airy, with computers for use and showers if desired. Food acceptable for a light meal. Friendly staff. I looked in the Business Class lounge, which seemed similar.

CABIN

Generally good appearance. This was a 777 with angled seating that was not the First Suite style. It was begining to look a bit dated/slightly worn out, but was still in good shape.

SEATING

Second time on this flight and I slept well. The seated position (for take-off/landing) is not the most comfortable, but is for a brief period. There is lots of sidespace, a reasonable storage space with lid, a good tray table, and room to place a small bag for access during flight. Unlike Cathay's new First Class layout, there are still large overhead storage bins. I like that the blanket was not as heavy as a duvet, which I find too warm, and was large. Some don't like that. Also there was a standard International First Class amenity kit, but no pajamas - something I can live with.

CATERING

As I planned to sleep immediately after takeoff, I asked the cabin staff to hold a Japanese meal for me, requesting I be awoken 1 hr. before landing. I woke up 30 minutes early and the prospect of that meal was no longer attractive, so I asked for some of the lighter items off the menu. Though they had already started preparing the Japanese meal, they were happy to change. Very nice service.

INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

It was poor. As on my previous experience, the video screen was tiny, and though each seat had a mini-vcr player built into it, the choice of additional films was quite limited. I assume when the Suite-style cabin is installed, a full on-demand IFE, with larger screen, will be part of it.

CABIN STAFF SERVICE

Good, helpful, senior staff but not in the least standoffish.

FLIGHT ARRIVAL SERVICES

Did not use any.

CUSTOMER VERDICT

Very comfortable, on time, could use better IFE, but otherwise quite pleased and will do again. As there are few U.S. carriers that offer a true international sleeper-seat first class cabin, it is nice to be able to patronize United.
