I ended up in the back row of Economy where the seats are only 2x3x2. Unfortunately, the 3 in the middle block do not recline in the very back row since they are up against a bulkhead/toilet, which makes watching your tv screen awkward when the person in front reclines. I had my feet out in the aisle since there was no space in front of me (I'm 6'3") and as a result my back was stiff following a 19 hour stint via Dakar to Kennedy. The only plus was that the two people next to me were married and the guy in the middle seat disturbed his wife when he needed to get out the seat instead of me. It's a fine seat for short-haul but not nice for anything longer than a couple of hours.

I was nervous about my seat for my 17 hour flight from JFK to JHB (stop in Dakar). I am 6' 4" and was assigned a middle seat. I waited at the gate and was able to get an aisle seat with an open seat next to me. The legroom was suitable for my long legs, mostly because I was able to stretch them out on both sides. On my return flight I had an aisle seat in the bulkhead. The partition was too close for me to stretch one of my legs out. The courteous flight attendant was able to move me to the aisle seat in the second row of economy and that was a great seat! I had nobody next to me and the aisle seats in the second row are perfect for leg room because there are only 3 seats in the front row of economy. So each aisle seat in the 2nd row has only half a seat in front of it.

Review:   21 November 2007

Aircraft:  Airbus A340-600

Name:  Richard Wiley (Zimbabwe)

Position:  Window

Layout:   2x4x2

PAX size:  Large

Recommended :  No

Comfort Score :  5/10

2 Star  Legroom space

Seat was in row 36 at very front of Economy. While the lack of seats in front provided excellent chest room and made entry/egress from window seat easier, the proximity of the bulkhead severely curtailed foot/legroom. Simply impossible to stretch out. Also, inclusion of tray in the armrest made seat uncomfortably narrow. Cabin environment very quiet owing to forward position and good insulation on A340. Would only recommend this seat to pax under 1.65m and of slim build. Seat shape and support was pretty good.

Jo'burg to New York via Dakar. The seat was better than I expected. The seat bottom moves forward and tilts slightly at the front as you recline the seat back. The legroom was adequate. The size of the personal TV screens is also impressive and larger than other airlines.
