I have recently travelled on the Washington and Chicago service out of Manchester and although I
felt that the service, food and IFE were excellent I had a seat that had limited leg room due to the
sizeable IFE box under the seat in front. Why do airlines do this? Was there no room on the
ceiling of the cargo hold?

BMI's transatlantic service in economy from Chicago to Manchester is fabulous. I flew with them in
Dec. 2002, returning in early Jan. 2003, and found the whole experience nearly flawless. The service
is terrific, food tasty and plentiful, seats comfortable, IFE enjoyable, and aircraft immaculate.

The MAN-ORD flight on BMI was one of the most comfortable economy flights I have ever taken.
Attentive staff, good food, clean aircraft and overall excellent service and would certainly fly
with them again the next time I visit Chicago.

I ended up with a window seat in Y class on a recent Chicago-Manchester flight, but was kept
uncomfortable for the entire trip because of a sizeable IFE box under the seat in front of me. It
took up about half of the width normally available for your feet and - being mounted to one side -
made it impossible for me (I am only 5'10") to keep both my legs straight. If I attempted that, my
right leg would be jammed up against the front corner of this IFE box; the only alternative was to
bend my right leg and keep my right foot in front of the offending structure. I am not sure whether
these boxes are under all window seats (my seat was 36K), but the resulting degree of passenger
comfort I experienced was at best that of a low-cost carrier.

They have an area in economy with extra legroom and this I found worth paying for. However I do
recall the armrests would not go up - and in the economy section at the rear they did,
so I ended up down there getting some sleep.

The bmi A330 is a lovely aircraft, PTV's in each seat and a bright and aesthetically
pleasing cabin. The pitch is 1" more than BA at 32" and all seats have footrests and
adjustable 'wing' headrests. Prior to take-off a choice of juice or water is served, amenity packs
and a menu card (with a choice of 3 main courses) - in economy! The config is 2x4x2 and
in terms of where to sit, I would bear in mind that restrooms are in the middle of the
economy cabin and the rear of the economy cabin can be a little noisy due to the proximity of
the galley.

Used British Midland twice last year on transatlantic from Manchester and
standards were quite good. Better than their short haul service and staff seem
much more cheerful. The seats are okay (about same as BA main cabin) and great
meals were served in both directions. Onboard entertainment is good and more
than adequate for these shortish flights. Would suggest you try to get a seat at
the front end of the Economy cabin, and go for the window block of seats - nice
Airbus planes they use are much quieter than the 747's and also better than BA's
777's.
