LGW-SGN-BKK-SGN-NHA-HAN-LGW. Long haul - old planes, outdated entertainment system, chaotic meal service and check-in in Hanoi was a passenger's worst nightmare. Short haul - newer plane and actually not bad. Cabin crews were unfriendly and rude. Staff still seem unfamiliar with its obligations as a Skyteam member as didn't offer us any accommodation when we were delayed for over 12 hours. This will be my first and last long haul flight with the airline.

First and last time I fly with Vietnam Airlines. I am over 1.90m and they put me on the back row of the plane (HCMC to SYD). This means that you cannot adjust your seat back, while the person in front of you can. Crew were not helpful in finding another seat. At the back of the plane there is never a choice between the 2 available meals. Entertainment system is ok. Transit from international plane to domestic flight (and luggage handling) is total chaos.

Only booked one internal flight with them, Hanoi to Nha Trang. Hanoi airport was horrendous, probably because Vietnam airlines system had failed therefore everyone held in chaotic queues. Flight left late. Crew were miserable, and seemed to think themselves superior to passengers. Plane was rather old.

HCMC to MEL on 28 Feb. While on time to land 15 mins before schedule - went into a series of holding patterns so we landed 40 minutes late. Several passengers connecting to Canberra missed their flight. There was no explanation from the pilot - let alone an apology for the delay in the ETA.

Travelled direct to Ho Chi Minh from London. Also undertook internal flights during our stay. International planes need to be updated. Seats were not comfortable and space limited. Those who were lucky enough to have 3 seats to lie out on may have a different view, but we found the long haul flight an ordeal. Inflight entertainment was woeful, food average. On a positive note all flights on time. Would recommend for short internal trips but for a long trip until the planes are updated it is not a great experience.

Economy Class Jan 2012. Ho Chi Minh-Hanoi-Paris. Check-in staff had poor English skills and were unfriendly. Domestic flight on Airbus was ok, but Hanoi-Paris flight on an old 777. A couple of TV sets not working, and people just pressing all the buttons to get it to start! Inflight system with a very limited choice of films, and not very fancy. Meals were not good, basic style food. Cabin crew did not smile while serving passengers, they did not even look at passengers. Overall I would not recommended.

Hanoi-Phuquoc-Saigon-Hanoi. Then Hanoi-HKG-Hanoi. Then Hanoi-Sing-Hanoi. All flights with great food, comfortable seats, brand new or almost brand new aircraft's. FA's tentative and helpful. The entertainment is not ideal. All in all, worth the money, excellent flights (on time and smooth take-off, landings), and very comfortable.

3 Flights SIN-SGN, SGN-HAN, HAN-SIN. Pretty horrible, a lot worse than even a year ago. SIN-SGN, 320, one of toilets broken and door taped over with tape that must have been there for months. SGN-HAN: a completely worn out 777. Left on time, but the seat was broken. No padding, backing metal plate buckled and protruding into the back. Complained to FA, said they were "supposed to be like that" and offered a blanket which made little difference. Checked a few other empty seats and found one marginally less deformed. Spent most of the flight standing up since too painful to sit for any length of time. Check-in counters in VN worn out, computers not working and system down. Adequate food and service inflight, but condition of planes unacceptable.

Business Class HKG-SGN-BKK. Domestic SGN-PQC-SGN. Friendly FA's speaking ok English. The food from HKG was almost inedible and the red wine was terrible. Domestic flights ok, got a bottle of water which is sufficient. The food was slightly better on SGN-BKK leg. Took a beer instead of wine although it was not well chilled.

HAN-SGN return. Outbound in economy, inbound in business. Online check-in works well and chosen seats were honoured. Economy on 777 is comfortable. There is AVOD but it is not activated for domestic flights for some reason. Had to make do with an overhead video showing a French-Canadian version of Candid Camera. Food was ok, service generally nice. Long wait for luggage in Saigon. Return on A321. Business lounge is ok, but breakfast buffet is great. Seats are decent, service again pleasant. Same overhead video with the same program.

My husband and I booked 3 internal flights in Vietnam, partly because the flight times suited us better than those offered by other carriers, and partly because we had been advised it was a good airline. 2 of the 3 flights had schedule changes, one changed from 10am to 6pm, and another changed 2 days before the flight while we were over there. We did manage to change both flights after originally being told we couldn't make a change. Onboard, a 'snack' is a small bottle of water, and on a longer flight I requested a vegetarian meal - I did this online, as well as telephoning the Melbourne office to confirm the request. I then checked it online before the flight, and it was definitely noted in the booking. However, onboard there was no vegetarian meal, flight attendants quite rudely advised that as I had not phoned the airline 24 hrs prior to the flight to confirm the meal request, there was no meal for me. No one had advised of this requirement, and on asking for a meal as I was hungry, I was given a few pieces of melon and a small portion of nuts while others had meat bread rolls.

SGN-BKK on A320. Last-minute fare (2hr prior to the flight) was $200 for a 90 min flight, which is quite reasonable. However, their fares are not as competitive when booking in advance. Decent economy service. Full meal, tasteful and well-presented, was a pleasant surprise - not expected on a fairly short regional flight. Clean plane, helpful flight attendants.

SGN-HAN roundtrip as part of international itinerary starting in US. Planes are basic, even when relatively new - 777 on one leg had no IFE and service was simple. VN staff still seem unfamiliar with its obligations as a Skyteam member. Diamond Skymiles members earn automatic SkyClub membership and reciprocal entrance to any Skyteam member lounge (regardless of whether flying domestically or internationally) but VN staff insisted that Delta Diamond members could only access its lounges if flying VN internationally. Part of the problem is that Skyteam doesn't seem to have a system standard like Star Alliance does e.g. Silver and Gold, so Platinum or Diamond on Delta do not translate well into a specific ranking for other Skyteam airlines.

SGN-PQC return. The aircraft was new, no snacks, just water, but it is a short trip. On the return, a baby was crying throughout the flight and the crew didn't do anything. Bearable on a 50 mins trip, but had it been a long haul flight it would have been unpleasant.

Sydney-Saigon-Phu Quoc-Saigon-Hanoi-Saigon-Sydney. Each time it was a different plane Airbus 330, Boeing 777-200, to ATR and all were in great condition, maybe a few years old at best. Originally I was a bit concerned as I read reviews about old planes etc but that was not my experience at all. The planes were clean, entertainment system worked great, had a good selection of recent Hollywood movies to watch - only one television show, but that's ok, as the movies and games kept me well entertained. I cant fault the planes or the professionalism at all. Planes were clean, well maintained and the crew were friendly and polite, always ready to assist and help.

Hue City-Saigon-Hue. Quick check-in. Lounge in Hue ok. Flight delayed 15 mins, well announced. Luggage bags were the first out at destinations. We booked a flight for our son from Tokyo to Melbourne with a stop over in Ha Noi. Vietnam Airlines changed the flight so that the return flight was Melbourne-Saigon-Hanoi-Tokyo. Therefor he needed a visa to do the domestic leg Saigon to Ha Noi. This was never part of the original booking and Vietnam Airlines in Australia would not board him. We have tried to negotiate with Vietnam Airlines through our booking agent, and we have been unsuccessful to get Vietnam Airlines to compensate us in any way.

Hue-Ho Chi Minh City. The Flight was very comfortable and the landing was the smoothest landing I've ever experienced. The bad thing was that the flight attendants were not very attentive. There were 2 seats in front of my friend and I that had their seat pushed back to its full position and two flight attendants walked pass the cabin and did not spot the two people with their chairs not in it's upright position. The flight attendants also constantly ignored passengers. Good airline but terrible flight attendants.

Hanoi-Tokyo, A330. Glad this running at about 40% load otherwise could have been a cramped flight. Staff try hard but food and drink is not good enough for a 5hr international flight (beef spaghetti for breakfast). Plane interior was quite worn and IFE was rubbish. Good thing the flight left at midnight. Paid top dollar for this too (AUD $650). Crazy that a JAL flight leaves on the same route 20min earlier.

SGN-HAN, B777-200ER. Clean and tidy inside. Seat 3x3x3 configuration makes travelling as a couple a bit awkward, but for short haul it's ok. The cabin crew were good. The food was very poor for western tastes. Seats were wide and VN has a seat pitch better than many. We got a very cheap fare for this route (about $50 each) so makes a better choice than other LCCs in Vietnam.

SYD-SGN, new A330-200 was clean and tidy. IFE was working fine and a good selection of movies. Crew polite and attentive, although I did find the use of the last couple of rows of middle seats as storage for toiletries and staff luggage a bit sloppy. The resting of galley trolleys near the rear doors was questionable and needs review. If you need to go to HAN then obviously there are other one stop options from SYD with higher rated airlines - however VN still give a good connection time.

SGN-HAN and original departure time of 0600 was put back to 0700 (informed by email). At the airport we were told the plane would not leave until 0820 for "technical reasons". This was a nuisance because we had arranged a transfer from HAN airport to Halong. Our second flight was DAD-SGN. The flight was supposed to leave at 1005 and punctual departure was assured when we phoned on the morning of the flight. At the airport we were told we would not leave until 1350, again putting us to considerable inconvenience was we had arranged ground transport to the Mekong. Technical reasons were again the ostensible cause. Vietnam Airlines is clearly consolidating flights and is quite prepared to put the travelling public to considerable trouble for their own operational reasons. Once in the air the planes were fine, but the management and passenger care are very poor indeed.

Internal services on 30th April were abysmal. Three flights from Vinh were supposed to depart during the day. Only one did and it landed in HCM at midnight. Hue to Hanoi, I was horrified to find my seat belt webbing (by the buckle), frayed to the point that about 50% of the belt width was missing. The belt had obviously not been checked in a very long time. When collecting baggage from the same flight one large case was so water-logged it was necessary to have the contents laundered and the case dried by an industrial dryer. We can only guess this case was left outdoors air-side at Hue during a two hour departure delay, in teeming rain. Our Hanoi Travel Agent took the matter up with VN whose only offer was to call us and apologise - no apology was ever received.

SGN-DAD A321. This should have been a normal 1 hour sector with Vietnam Airlines but turned into a nightmare. I originally booked on the internet for a mid-morning departure. This was schedule changed recently to 1150. On check-in at SGN Airport, the departure had been schedule changed again (unbeknownst to me) to 3.20pm. At the departure gate this soon became 4pm, then 5pm, then 6pm, et. With a lounge full of angry people, the Vietnam Airlines staff clearly had no idea what was going on. Asking them directly, “where is the operating aircraft?” they were not able to provide a straight answer and this made people more angry. After a more senior supervisor was called in, an aircraft was magically found around 6.30pm and we finally took off at 6.55pm for a smooth flight to Danang. Vietnam Airlines plays a vital part in this country, and I can only hope they continue to invest in basic customer service skills. Some of their staff are quite obviously in desperate need.

Sound quality was poor with lots of static interference on both flights. Seats older long haul business class (non lie-flat) but quite comfortable. The only other complaint was toilets - in terrible condition and needed an update.

HAN-HUI, DAD-SGN in Y and SGN-HAN in C class. On the flight from Hanoi to Hué, check-in staff was not even able to sit two passengers together although the flight was not fully booked. On a one-hour-flight, we were served nothing but a refresher towel and a small bottle of mineral water. There was not even a choice of non-alcoholic drinks, which I consider a must. In Danang, we got seats together, but the service on the flight to HCMC was as spartan as the one on the first segment. In business class from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, we received cold fruit juices during boarding, a cold refresher towel after take-off, a hot meal with starter, bread and butter, three choices for the main course and a fruit platter for dessert, a cold refresher towel after the meal, tea and coffee and as many free refills as one wanted. Obviously, every bit of service is put into business class and none into economy class. If I were ever to fly them again, then only in C class. The small difference in price is worth the difference in service.

Vegetarian food was requested and listed on the ticket, but was not provided, nor was any other alternative. Drinks glasses were not removed, even at the end of the flight when we were asked to put up trays for landing! Luggage was lost for 2 days after flight- 5 other passengers also had their luggage lost on the flight from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh.

As a frequent flyer with Vietnam Airlines (2-3 times a month over 3 years now) I have probably gained some insight - just awful. Often seats are dirty or broken. You have something to discuss with the FA - forget it, no English - same with announcements in English, anybody able to understand that? Entertainment system operational during flight - if you are one of the lucky guys. And things are getting worse. Value for money - not any more since they have just recently increased the prices remarkably. For domestic flights there are no real alternatives, but for international flights, pick another airline.

HCMC - Phu Quoc. At check in my wife was refused a boarding pass because her middle name was not on the ticket, despite offering her passport as ID. None of us travelling had our middle names on the tickets, but she was singled out. After a huge argument they relented, but insisted that we sign a waiver forcing us to buy a new ticket for the return leg, The whole issue was unbelievable, and the treatment meeted out abominable. Flight was ok and included a small bottle of very warm water.

MEL-HCM, HCM-SYD. Outbound flight on A330 was decent. Aircraft clean, modern and spacious inside. Food was okay. Return flight on old 777. Interior of aircraft very poor, torn seats, little leg room, on demand entertainment, but movie with terrible sound and picture. Food was awful. Staff on this flight were friendly and quite helpful.

DaNang to HCMC, I've never been on a dirtier plane. Seats were filthy and the cabin poorly maintained. During the take-off, the lavatory doors sprung open and the interior cabinet doors as well. Nobody bothered to close them after. Kids were running around during landing, the flight attendants couldn't care less. Never again Vietnam Airlines.

Our flight back from Vietnam was disappointing. During the night flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Frankfurt, after a quick moderate diner the light were switched off generally so you were supposed to sleep. The light system on our chair was not working so during the whole night there was no possibility to read a book or paper. Also the films screens in the seats were not working. n our way to Vietnam we had the same bad experience with this system. Never again with Vietnam Airlines again till they have improved.

Living in Vietnam, I use VN Airlines pretty often because of the quickest flights from Paris to Hanoi, and they're the most reliable for domestic travel. However, I still have to see a smile on any of their flights. Flight attendants are comparable to Hanoian waiters - be prepared to a loud "you, what you want?" when you're trying to sleep, to attendants making phone calls during landing and takeoff, running into you with their trolley without a word of apology. On Europe-Vietnam flights, entertainment system is down on two seats out of three, overhead light about the same. An extra bottle of wine to make up for it - in your dreams. The online reservation system is a joke. The attendants at check in won't apply the SkyTeam policy in terms of extra luggage allowance for partner companies frequent fliers. Why - because they don't know what SkyTeam is. I still wonder how this company entered SkyTeam.

Economy class Saigon to Hanoi in B777, gracious, smiling staff. Meal and drinks served. LPQ to HAN in Fokker jet with wonderful flight attendants. Very short flight, so drinks only. Then onto SGN is an old 777, old stained upholstery, and missing trim panels. This B777 was a disgrace to the fleet. FA's were excellent.

Sydney-Ho Chi Minh City-Sydney. Awful. Surly, lazy flight attendants. Broken seats, no inflight entertainment on the way over. Crew would not respond to the call button. Seat configuration did not match overhead reading lights as seating configuration changed to 2-5-2 rather than 3-3-3 for Boeing 777. On the way back, many reading lights did not work including ours, nor the seat back screens including ours - nor the headsets. Took 4 attempts to get a response to be moved to alternative seating. No apologies. No safety demonstration other than the animated version on the screens. The food was the only saving grace. Our tickets were not discount or budget tickets either - about $1700 return each. Will never fly them internationally again. Flew internally HCMC-Denang-HCMC. Much better but reading lights and flight attendant call lights were randomly going on and off including in empty seats. At least the flight attendants responded to these. A much happier bunch in general. Would fly internally again.

Hanoi-Hue-Hanoi A321. Excellent service. Did not expect much on a 1 hours flight but was pampered throughout. Priority to business class passengers works at check-in, lounge, gate, and for luggage. Lounge good, huge varieties of snacks and bites. 4 computers and WIFI available. Wines are neither offered on ground nor in air. Onboard 4 different juices and 4 different beer brands are offered. Cold snack onboard was fair. No entertainment system. Radio might work but no headphones were distributed.

SIN-HAN one way with family. Check in opens only 2 hours ahead of departure and as we were early we were first in line, had we not been it may have been quite a rate even for business class. Lounge access was to the JAL lounge which I had almost to myself. Boarding on time and drinks were offered prior to departure. The cabin of the A320-200 was rather tired and various fittings broken as were the first set of poor quality headphones I was given. The crew made a fuss of the children but did not have anything on board to amuse them as many airlines do. They did serve a substantial meal with special dishes (pre-ordered) for the children. The food was more than adequate and nicely served. Drink service was a bit slow and after trays were cleared more or less dried up as the crew seemed more interested in their conversations. The inflight entertainment was acceptable with a satisfactory choice for a flight of just over 3 hours. Price very reasonable, around £230 per adult which compared favourably with all other direct and indirect options on this route. Overall a perfectly decent service with no major complaints but if Vietnam Airlines want to compete with Asian giants in the future they will need to step up their service significantly.

DaNang-Ho Chi Minh and Ho Chi Minh-Hanoi. Flights compared favorably to US carriers. Given a bottle of water on 50 minute flight to Ho Chi Minh and a small meal on 1hr 20min flight to Hanoi. Planes new and clean. Entertainment system running but no headphones were provided. For the price ($80 and $100), we could not complain.

Hong Kong to Hanoi in economy. Nice flight. new plane and meal was fine, drinks all served in a 90 minute flight. Service slightly lacking. TV's communal and pretty poor. No safety checks during flight, a passenger had a big bag on a seat throughout and not asked to move. Otherwise good. You cannot do day before check in on Vietnam Airlines at airport express, on day only.

MEL-HCMC-MEL and 3 internal flights. A320 aircraft used in the internationl sector despite their inflight magazine not listing these in their current aircraft fleet. How many more seats could they possible put into these planes because international passengers body sizes are certainly not taken into consideration. MEL-HCMC plane seat dirty and broken making seating very uncomfortable. Entertainment handpiece missing from seat (two wires protruding) leaving us with no entertainment - 4 other centre row seats nearby had the same problem! No reading light, no call bell button operational - after waiting for some 30 minutes for a hostess to return with a soft drink, went to the back of the plane and found 4 staff reading magazines! Internal flights were OK - newer aircraft and given drinks on each flight. Inflight service crew need urgent training on developing interpersonal and language skills, eg smile and indicate that they are happy to provide a service to the customer, not act as if they were forced into the job! No in-flight information provided by the air crew during any stage of the flights, something that is a norm with other airlines.

Melbourne to Saigon on one of their smaller planes. Entertainment not working, plane dirty, magazines in back of seat sticky and horrible. Staff spoke very little. A passenger had been smoking in toilet. Staff tried to sort him out but hard as he was very rude to everyone and stunk. People coughing everywhere but no mouths covered. Horrible flight. We flew back on a more modern larger plane, Saigon to Sydney but still no entertainment. Food ok on both flights, just lack of maintenance to aircraft. Flights were smooth.
