United Airlines review by Rory McCall

I usally fly American, US Air, Delta, Air Tran, South West, but never United. Recently I have flown 8 round trip flights of varying length on United. The biggest inconvenience is that United forces you to either pay extra for the economy plus seats, or be stuck in a middle seat if you try pre-checking in on line. This is a neat and sleazy tactic that I find offensive. With the exception of SouthWest, I check in early online, get a good seat and print my boarding pass. To get around this, I now wait until I get to the airport and then check-in. It's a gamble, but I usually then end up in an economy plus seat at no extra charge and with a window or aisle seat. Again, no other airline does this and I fly a great deal on them all. As a result, I typically choose United as a last choice.

Seoul to SFO and SFO to MEX. Seoul to SFO was in Business Class (thanks to upgrade using miles). Comfortable seat in a 777 and I find the (old) UA Business seats pleasant. Food service Ok, wines served were of poor quality. UA uses Singapore Airlines club at Seoul airport which was a real eye-opener after using UA's modest and poorly resourced Red Carpet Clubs. SFO to MEX was in economy plus (a really good deal for those of us unable to forward Business Class seats).

SFO-PEK return, economy class. After flying most of my long haul on British Airways, KLM and other airlines of similar quality, this was agony. The seats were the smallest and tightest I've ever experienced and had virtually no padding. There were of course no personal entertainment systems and the movie screen was impossible to see without craning my neck uncomfortably.

LHR-SFO and LAX-LHR return in business class. Seats and ife are not the most advanced, but comfortable. Staff onboard polite and helpful with plentiful refills of water. Meals well presented - although the portions were not huge they were ample and tasty.

LHR-ORD-DEN Economy. London-Chicago upgraded to Economy Plus in Boeing 777. Cabin service quite reasonable for economy. Main meal simple. Soft drinks free, alcohol $5 or £3. Cabin crew helpful and served water at intervals during the flight. Pre-Chicago snack was quite tasty. IFE was disappointing, several films used sub-titles to explain jumps in time or location, but these were often impossible to read on the small screen, making the plots difficult to follow. Chicago ground staff very helpful in guiding us and our luggage to our connecting flight. Flight to Denver also delayed. No refreshments on this short flight. Also flew LAX-LHR 2nd June, with very similar results to LHR-ORD, departure again delayed for a few minutes due to air conditioning. Also, as it was a new month, IFE films had been switched, so the June menu for US-UK was very similar to the May menu for UK-US, but I still couldn't read the subtitles!

United First Los Angeles to Kona. Despite dwindling budgets and services United has made a decent recovery on these Hawaiian routes. Older but poised and helpful cabin staff served a decent meal and constantly available for additional drinks etc through the flight. 757 first class seating is a joke and should really be dubbed business class but considering how things have slipped and how bad they were two years ago United is doing a decent job on this route. Nothing special, certainly nothing luxurious but a pleasant helpful cabin crew will make up for a myriad of difficulties in these situation

SFO-PDX-LAX in 737 First Class. This type of aircraft really shows its age. The overhead bin made nice noises while taxiing in SFO and also during takeoff. Also, I have never seen an empty seat in domestic F Class, with loads of people requesting upgrades, apparently one of the few ways of burning your miles. But I guess that an Economy seat with an empty one next to you is actually more comfortable. FA's were friendly, the service provided minimal, drinks to PDX only and a small dinner to LAX. I had F Class due to a Star Alliance RTW, otherwise, Economy would be just as well for the still relatively short flights. Positive mention deserves the on-time arrival on both flights.

SYD - LAX Business Class. One of the worst flights I have had in a ling time. I was seated upstairs in the old 747-400. The seat was not a recliner but had reasonable width. The IFE was not on demand and the movies took a long while to start. The service was woeful, no pre- flight drink was offered, had to ask FAs to hang up my coat. FAs didn't make eye contact and retreated to the galley after the meal service. They ran out of choices for the main meal by the time they reached me. They also ran out of US customs and immigration forms! The flight was more or less on time. The next time I can't get a seat on Qantas, I would prefer to fly with Air New Zealand via Auckland than another United flight!

IAD-MUC - MUC-IAD in Economy Plus. Booking at the desk took forever, despite the fact it was the middle of the day on Tuesday with lack of any national holiday. Plane was a newer Boeing 777 but was already showing wear and tear on some of the seats. Service was standard, a few smiles, but it was very rushed. Crew did an excellent job by bringing drinks around every hour or so. IFE was questionable. Food was surprisingly good, but return flight it was cold and made of an unknown substance. Return flight was on a 777, as well, this time it was not as worn and showing her age. Pilots were very nice, gave my class a shout out for being on board as a big group. My only complaint is the lack of a good IFE and the attendant's robotic attitude.

YYZ-SFO-PEK in Economy Plus. As a 1K MileagePlus member I am one of their so-called most valued customers. If I am receiving their premium service I feel very sorry for the rest of the passengers. The leg from Toronto to San Francisco is a 5 hour 25 minute flight and the only thing that is offered is soft drinks, coffee, and some pretzels. Or if you are feeling adventurous you can invest in their US$ 5 breakfast surprise. Only thing that surprised me was that I did not spend the next leg from SFO to PEK in the restroom. Instead I got an exit row aisle seat (35C) that is adjacent to the rest rooms. The extra leg room is non existent since the space is used either by people waiting their turn in the filthy rest rooms, or by people having long loud conversations in multiple languages, or by flight attendants who have realized that this is an ideal area to park their trolleys. The flight attendants on these transpacific flights, I flew this sector 10 times last year with United, are also unfriendly and inattentive. Headphones on both legs did not work, and the in-flight entertainment is a joke. The seats are old and uncomfortable on these 747-400s, and the food is simply inedible. These transpacific flights are supposedly cash cows for the airlines operating them, but does this mean that they have to use the oldest equipment available? That I will be using the competition in future goes without saying, and now I just have to find something to do with all the miles I have accumulated with this low-cost carrier. Unfortunately the option of giving 0 stars is not available so I will have to give them 1 star.

MUC-ORD-PDX First class according to my boarding pass. The seats were the old style so not even as spacious as business class seats. Totally unacceptable for a 8+ hour flight. FA's were always visible and eager to please, the food was fine but nothing special. Actually, the entire experience was boring, uncomfortable, and very ordinary with the exception of the first class lounge in Chicago. The shower facilities were nearly as nice as Lufthansa's first class terminal in Frankfurt, but there's no comparison between the rest of the facilities. Lufthansa has a terrific lounge and United can only dream of matching their product.

SFO-FCO-SFO. Thank goodness we upgraded to economy plus. We had emergency row seats near the galley so no seats in front of us. It was delightful! Everything worked, food acceptable. On the way home, the plane was not full so we had the entire row to stretch out. Overbooked flights in IAD prompted me to give up my seat and in return, United put me up at the Hyatt (great hotel), gave meal vouchers and put me on a direct flight to Sacramento, my final location. The personnel was terrific, efficient and very accomodating both on the flights and in the airports. I will fly United again (because I am in economy plus). I would not fly if only flying in economy. No legroom there and other airlines offer more for the same price.

JFK-LAX-SYD, Economy plus. I have to say that this was the worst flying experience in over 20 years of airline travel. Even leaving aside the fact that the P.S service from JFK missed the connection in LAX resulting in a 24 hour delay (with our hotel vouchers useless as the assigned hotel was full, an unwelcome experience at 1.30am) the actual 747-400 service across the pacific is substandard for 2007 eg: (no seat back screens, substandard food, very old uncomfortable seats, headphones which don't work). The only saving grace is that the flights are sometimes only half full, so you need to be the lucky one to find a few seats spare to sleep across.

SFO/LHR C class. Acceptable. The seat was not lie-flat but I had no trouble sleeping 7 hours. I did not use the IFE but it was dated. The food was fine - not great but adequate and tasty. The crew was more interested in fulfilling tasks than in providing service. There were no problems at all but also no feeling of connection or interest in the passengers beyond the obligatory requirements.

ORD-MUC in Business Class - is United a low cost carrier? Yes, it is! Transatlantic flights with old business class seats (no flatbeds), the IFE not working during the first 4 hours, a broken headset, horrible food and unpolite senior cabin attendants. What else would you demand for your money? The menu offered 3 different courses. My fiance and I decided to go for the pasta. But there was not enough pasta. So my fiance got the "first class" pasta - which looked like our cat food and I got the "last" business class pasta which in the end turned out to be economy class pasta served on business class china. The service during the flight was poor.

LAX-JFK p.s. Business Class Service. For an American carrier, not bad at all. Negative start-no Red Carpet Room access for biz class passengers, just first. However, things improved after boarding. Cheerful, attentive FA. Comfy seat (old biz class) for transcontinental flight. Personal dvds, eyeshades/ear plugs passed out promptly. Two full meals - one hot breakfast (three options), cold snack before landing (two options). Food decent, not terrific (at least fruit was ripe). Alcohol options aplenty (I didn't indulge at the early hour), but not no champagne, just sparkling wine (albeit with signature cocktail options). Very attentive follow-up for drinks/snacks throughout flight. Quick, smooth flight. Staff seems to take care, which makes a difference. Bags came out first, which is fantastic at JFK. Why can't all American biz class service have this attention to quality?

Washington to London Heathrow Business Class: the main issue with UA is the seats, now totally outdated compared to the competition (especially the footrest which does not lift up enough), and the small IFE screen. Otherwise the service, by cheerful Dutch stewardesses, the wine, the cabin cleanness, the boarding, the general information, the punctuality were of good level, not comparable to 5 stars airlines, but nothing to complain about. For medium flights I found it perfectly acceptable, but would never board such plane for a trans-pacific flight.

LGA-IAD-GSP return. The flight from LGA to IAD took off an hour and fifteen minutes behind schedule, leaving those with connections either stranded or dashing to their gates. The IAD to GSP leg had one flight attendant, adequate for a regional jet, but it would have helped if the flight attendant spoke English. Return trip went smoothly. Seats on regional jets reasonably comfortable, but the seat on the 757 (LGA-IAD) was quite narrow. To summarize: I don't think I'll fly United again if other options are available.

Heathrow to Nashville. Transatlantic leg ok., flight on time etc. Domestic leg from Dulles to Nashville appalling. I was only flying to Nashville for two days for a wedding, arrived at check-in to be told flight was over-booked and I didn't currently have a seat (this was booked four months previously). Whilst waiting for a seat I noted that they had eight domestic flights leaving from the same gate within 35 minutes of each other, all eight were overbooked, all eight were delayed and as one flight came in to turn round they asked for five volunteers not to fly because it had five broken seats ! My flight was at 5.45 p.m. so when I enquired what was the worst scenario if they couldn't get me on my flight I was told it would be the next day and I would have to fly from Dulles to Cincinnatti and then on to Nashville, thereby missing half the wedding preparations. As I got a bit tearful at that point I did manage to get one of the seats that had been given up by virtue of bribing passengers. What a shambolic way to run an airline. My previous two trips to Nashville with this airline resulted in lost luggage on one occasion and a three hour wait in Dulles whilst they tried to find both an available plane and a crew. Never again.

Mexico to Washington to Greensborough, business (called first) class: check-in at Mexico airport very efficient, good lounge with free wireless, and friendly boarding. Old Airbus 319 with seats unworthy of normal business class, and only one movie on display - again unworthy of minimum IFE that can be expected on a 4 hours flight. Service was robotic, no menu, no champagne, only predictably Chardonnay. Usual warm peanuts, salad and spongy cake reflecting lack of taste, but the Tacos were quite decent. The arrival to Washington was chaotic as usual, with a lot of people and long queues, which were admittedly processed quite fast, so you don’t have to wait too much. The second stretch from Washington to Greensborough was eventful, as quite prior to take-off, the pilot informed us of an hydraulic problem and we had to go back to the gate and change plane. Everyone was upset, however it must be said that UA was quite good at informing us periodically, then found a new airplane after a total delay of only 1 hour and half – a job very well done. UA could be quite a decent company if they only invest a little bit of money in the good traditional business way (menu, decent starter and wine) which bring back bygone pleasure (in the US) to air travel.

Through the United Airlines website I booked a roundtrip Amsterdam-Los Angeles in economy. On the way to Lax we had to transfer through Washington Dulles. The first leg to IAD was flown with a Boeing 777. United needs to upgrade their interior. Years ago they used to have modern equipment and with the latest IFE. But today the IFE and interior is a little bit out of date. The IFE in my seat was not working properly and also the music at the music channels was interrupted many times. The flight left on both legs left on time which gave us a early arrival. The food in general was ok. I had the window seat before the last row, which if you are not seated in Economy plus, are good seats. The second leg to Lax was also flown in a Boeing 777 for domestic use. The seat pitch is less than on the international part but still ok.

JFK to LAX and Sydney. Unfortunately I had to travel United as part of the Star Alliance round the world ticket. Check in at JFK was slow and the crew insited on checking thru those infernal machines - I was not allowed to check in my baggage thru to Sydney and when I asked to speak to the supervisor, I was rudely brushed aside. The flight was cramped, inadequate leg room and definitely not the class of service associated with Star Alliance. In LAX, I was not allowed to check in till 4 hours prior to UA 839 departure and was adviced to "hang around" by the carousel - after talking to a very friendly and an efficient supervisor I was finally checked in. The flight to SYD was as bad as the flight into LAX. Old 747-400 - more than 15 years, unclean seats and inadequate leg room. Inflight entertainment non-existent and the service as bad. The cabin crew did a good job with what was available and were always friendly and attentive. I just cannot understand how United is allowed to be a part of the Star Alliance when they cannot match the service provided by SAA, SQ, Thai etc. We are paying top dollar for these flights but the service is equivalent to those found on very cheap airlines in Asia and Africa.

ICN-NRT-ORD-MLI-ORD-NRT-ICN. Never again. I was bringing my partner back to the US during the holiday season for the first time and went with the cheaper option of United to save nearly 50%. Everything started off well enough. At my request we were given more convenient connections and put in Economy Plus. Though United Economy Plus is what economy is on any Asian airline. Before we took off I knew we were in for a rough trip. The flight attendant distributing newspapers was asked in Japanese which papers they had. The flight attendent barked at her that she had no idea what she was saying and that she should ask in English. I offered to help and was told by the flight attendant she didn't have time. My non-English speaking Korean partner was afraid of the flight attendants for the remainder of the trip. We were on a 777 and the remainder of the flight progressed fine. Legroom was sufficient and on-demand service was quite nice. I have lived in Asia for many years and return home 3-4 times every year, usually on Korean Air, Asiana, or JAL. I will never fly United again. It was a horrible introduction to the US for my partner and a terrible experience overall.

PHL-ORD-PHL, first class. Seats so-so, not comfortable, and for a domestic flight the legroom was pinched. For more than a 2-hr flight it would've been painful. FA to ORD was competent and robotic. The meal of a chicken wrap in first class, was a disgrace, and had not been my 1st choice. The return was much better. The alternate meal, a salad with grilled shrimp, was identical to the other meal of the earlier luncheon flight. What made the ORD-PHL flight wonderful were the FAs. It was obvious they were enjoying themselves, and that made all the difference.

Using United.com, I booked a round trip from San Francisco to Charlotte, connecting through DC. On the return trip, I flew from Charlotte to Dulles and looked for my connecting flight to SFO. After some considerable effort that I won't describe here, I learned that United had booked my connecting flight on US Airways, departing from Reagan Airport. When I asked how I was supposed to get to Reagan Airport, I was told by a UA agent, "I guess a taxi?" When I asked how far the drive was, I was told, "about an hour." I paid $80 for the cab ride and spend most of the hour on hold with United customer service. I made little headway with the agent (in India?) and eventually received a $100 travel voucher.

Australia-US return and various combinations thereof. I've been flying with United for the last 10 years almost exclusively because of the ability to bank frequent flyer miles domestically and internationally (Qantas FF program is miserly). My chief gripe is that United and Qantas have the transpacific Australia-US route to themselves (Air NZ also via New Zealand), and pack their flights out anyway, so there is no incentive to do better. Result is that you get the older, more tired planes and their 747s really are starting to show their age. That said, I have just had 2 return trips to the US from Australia in the last month - both upgrades to business - and both went very well. Cabin staff are usually friendly and helpful although I have heard horror stories. Interiors are really showing their age on the transpacific routes and my guess is we will continue to get the cast offs from the atlantic route flights where they have more competition and need to have fresher equipment. Their on-time arrival record has been very good in my experience over the last few years (after a dismal record for a while). If the Australian government were to open up the route to competition from Singapore Airlines, the service would improve by 20% overnight and United would then become a superb airline. Right now, they don't have to, so they aren't.

LHR-LAX-LHR. Economy Plus. Pair of seats on aisle against bulkhead in both directions. Pretty comfortable. On time in both directions. You now pay for alcoholic beverages on UK routes (I notice comment that Paris routes are still complimentary). Movie selection OK (8 or 9 channels). Security at LHR very long. Security at LAX now pretty slick and less intrusive than in the recent past.

RIC-DEN and back via ORD. Check in at RIC easy, kiosk worked well. FAs on first flight polite but nothing to write home about. It is, however, important to note that this first flight was the only one on which the supplied headphones worked as advertised. ORD-DEN was on an old shuttle by United 737, which meant that there was no beverage cart, they had to come around and take your order.FAs alright, although when I bumped my head on the call button, I was informed that "you're only supposed to ring that if you're bleeding." Baggage arrived promptly at the carousel at DEN. Check in at DEN was horrible, with a very disinterested gentleman "helping" us. Flight to ORD was delayed, but "it should take off by 3" which would have made me miss my connecting flight. He made no attempt to reaccomodate me on another flight to ORD, or even Dulles (both United hubs) preferring instead to tell us that they were "all full" without even checking the computer. UAL 246 took off at 2:20 rather than the scheduled 1:36, which had me worried about making my connection. Flight was on a fairly well kept up 757, but IFE horrible, tiny screens and sound that worked only intermittently. Despite a last minute gate change I made my connection and flew hom (UAL 278) on an extremely worn and tired 737. the baggage took a long time to arrive on the carousel. I would consider flying United again, although it would be for their destinations than for their service.

LAX-HNL-LAX First class. To make it short, it might be called 'First' but this domestic 'First' does not match the 'Business' on international flights. All flights on time, and full. Dedicated check-in counters and priority security lanes at both LAX and HNL. But no lounge access. Surprising good breakfast (LAX-HNL) and decent lunch (HNL-LAX) served on board. Poor seat comfort. No foot rest, for instance. And crowded 2-2-2 configuration on the B767 used. Poor IFE (1 movie on central screen). Luggage delivery took ages at LAX on return flight. My main complaint would be about luggage policy. UA seems to have introduced a new "50lb/bag and 50$ fee for excess weight" for check-in luggage whatever your travelling class is. This is not advertised, and not implemented at LAX (I was lucky enough not to be required to pay the 50$ fee) but at HNL I had to pay 50$ for 2 excess pounds. As I was only checking-in one luggage instead of the 2 pieces authorised with piece concept rule, ground staff suggested I bought a second bag to redispatch my luggage and avoid the fee. Skyteam airlines limit luggage weight to 23kg (economy) and 32kg (business / first) : much more than UA. The lump sum fee (50$ whatever the excess is) and lack of First class advantage are unpleasant.

Paris to Los Angeles via Washingtonin Eco. The Paris Washington leg in a 777. Comfortable, smart and clean. Food OK, free wine and beer. Crew good humoured and efficient. Good Selection of films etc. Transfer and subsequent flight not as nice. Dulles airport has ambience of bus shelter and old 757 with no meal on last leg to los Angeles. Crew OK though and for EUR 530 it is a perfectly acceptable way to get across the world for comparatively little money.

LHR-SFO First class. B777. We were a bit daunted by this trip – first long haul flight with a 4 month infant in tow! Check in very efficient and friendly, fast track quiet (for a change at LHR) and plenty of time for some lounge hopping. Quick visit to the SAS London Lounge. Then headed to the SQ F lounge. A nice peaceful haven at this time of day – as ever, the best selection of food of all the Star Alliance lounges. Staff arranged for the infant stroller to be stored onboard the 777 to ease our departure and this set the tone for the flight. Really friendly crew who were genuinely concerned for the welfare of my wife and child. The pilot in the rest seat even came over to show my wife (in 4J) the extra privacy curtains this seat offers which was fantastic for breast feeding! Usual champagne and hot nuts before take off with refills and same once we were airborne. Lunch was a 5 course affair with Thai crab cake, salad, filet mignon (pretty decent for an airline steak) and cheese. IFE very dated compared to SQ etc but I had work to do on my laptop so not a major concern. Plenty of staff trips during the flight with food and drink. I found the United First Suite comfortable and got a reasonable bit of sleep too.

YYZ-IAD-EZE-IAD-YYZ. Short flights from Toronto to Dulles uneventful and rather boring. Flight to IAD on an Embraer E-145, small plane, no storage room and very loud inside, typical United express flight. Return flight back to toronto from IAD on one of their new E170 which also has a F-Cabin, seats roomy, real overhead bins, overall very nice regional jets, nevertheless no comparison to Air Canada new regional jets of same type, since AC offers AVOD in these jets even on the shortest trips, very disappointing by UA. Long haul flight From IAD - EZE in international First class on their 767-300. Small cabin with two rows in 2x1x2 seat configuration, one seat designated as rest seat for the pilots. F-Class in the 767-300 doesn't offer the suite product of the 777 or 747 of United, nevertheless offers a comfortable sleeping seat, although one has to say that the F-product in this plane is heavily outdated and other airlines offer such a type of product in Business Class, food, entertainment etc are subpar to other airlines first class, no comparison. Fortunately I had upgraded using a systemwide upgrade voucher, if I would have to pay for this type of F-Class, well it isn't worthwhile. Flight otherwise was fine and crew did a good service during the whole flight. On the return from Buenos Aires to IAD my upgrade didn't clear and I was flying Business Class. although their seats also here are of the older generation of business class seats, there was enough legroom and recline to sleep relatively comfortable. Their footrests nevertheless are awful, not very comfortable to sleep. Worst of all the flights was again the food and entertainment. Entertainment system isn't AVOD and the food, well, their basically two choices for main course and a third one which was an express menu, appetizer there was no choice and dessert was very unimaginative. All in all I got a meal which other airlines serve in Economy class very disappointing. Overall you can say that the flight in F-Class was Business Class in other airlines and the business class return flight has a business class seat with economy class service. Crew on all the flights professional and I guess that is what counts. Overall United premium products need some serious upgrading.

SYD-LAX in Business. I have been a long-time United frequent flier. I have travelled all over the world on UA (BKK, MUC, LHR, NRT, FRA, TPA, DFW, DEN, MSP, EWR, ORD, LAX, SFO, etc etc). While I still am a loyal customer, I was a little disappointed in the quality of service on this long, long flight (13.5 hours). We sat in business class (burned all our miles). The lunch after takeoff was quite good, but that was it for the hot food. They set a cart of sandwiches up by the galley for us to help ourselves during the middle of the flight, but I didn't hear any announcements nor did they come by, so if you didn't go looking, you went hungry. The flight attendants were fine, but really didn't spend much time in the cabin and weren't very personable (I try to make some friendly comments early in the flight and make sure to thank them each time they stop by), but while they were professional, they didn't seem to take much interest in their passengers. A bit of breakfast before landing and that was it. We had flown Asiana on the way down to Sydney, and there was a marked contrast in the level of service. It is disappointing that a once-glorious monarch of the sky now provides merely functional service, even on a flagship aircraft on a flagship route in a premium cabin.

My wife and flew United from ORD to LGA on Feb 22. I purchased coach fares and used miles to upgrade to First class and asked and received seats 2AB (did not want bulkhead). All this was done about 2 months prior to the flight. A couple of days before the flight I checked our seats and found us to be reseated into the bulkhead 1CD. I called UA's customer service only to be told "sorry" and nothing can be done and the switch was done by a "supervisor at the headquarters". Noone contacted us to ask if that would be OK and that is totally unacceptable. Flight was OK, food was good and if not for the seat dilemma this would have been a good experience.

LHR-LAX-SYD-LAX-LHR in Economy. Took the long way to Australia as United had pretty much the cheapest fare when I booked and because of the additional luggage you can take when your trip goes through the Americas. The pros: helpful and friendly flight attendants, good amount of leg room (in Economy Plus section which I was upgraded to on two of the flights) and comfortable seats. The cons: Uninspired catering (3 and 4 flights chicken or beef was the choice for the hot meal) inflight entertainment system that is out-dated compared to what other carriers are offering (on the flights between Australia and USA films shown on a projector in Economy). Clean but old aircraft. Overall a good experience and would fly again if the price was right.

SYD-SFO in Business Class. This was only my second longhaul flight with UA so I approached it with some hesitation, as the first trip was less than stellar. The 747-400 had a nice appearance, clean and well maintained. Seats adequate, probably state of the art for business class about 10 or 12 years ago! Multiple-choice but not on-demand video. Two main gripes on this flight: marginal catering and indifferent flight attendants. This is a 12.5 hour flight and somehow they "ran out" of chardonnay in Business prior to serving the first meal! Menu choices OK but uninspired - kind of like the ordinary "airplane food" from the old days. On the second meal, the choice was a little odd: fruit and yogurt plate, or a mushroom-and-cheese crepe. I opted for the fruit and yogurt, only to be told matter-of-factly "we're out of yogurt". FA asked her colleague if she had more fruit. Reply: "I don't but I can mix these two little ones together" -- as if I were not sitting there hearing the conversation. So without a word or an apology I got my mix of someone else's fruit salad - without yogurt - and suffered in silence. FA's seemed to be having an ongoing conversation amongst themselves (above our heads) and were too busy to be bothered dealing with or paying attention to passengers. Their preoccupation with their chat and another FA's birthday celebration unfortunately prevented them from caring about the customers on this trip. Between the unexceptional seating, the average video system, the below-average catering, and the uncaring flight crew, this trip was nothing memorable. If there are other options on a route besides United, I will be taking them next time, I think.

UA Express from GSP to CMH via IAD - bag lost out of IAD both ways. Also had to sleep at IAD after UA decided they were the only domestic airline that should not fly that day. When asked why, they took the "weather related" stance, although ALL of their Int'l flights were leaving. They cancelled a 12:35 Pm departure after 4:00 PM and as we all stood in the 4 hour wait line, heard them boarding a single flight to White Plains, NY? By the time I was able to re-book standby for the next day, all rooms within a reasonable distance were booked.

HKG - SIN Economy plus. The service on this flight was reasonable, however the state of the interior of the plane was dreadful. I took this flight in between Air Canada, Singapore airlines and Malaysia Airlines and United Airlines were well below the others. I am happy that I only had three hours on this plane. The entertainment was a very fuzzy main screen several rows ahead of my seat. The seats themselves were very tired and worn. UA are definitely in need of an upgrade in their product.

Original itinerary SIN-NRT-LAX-NRT-SIN economy plus, but due to overbooking I got voluntarily offloaded from the last segment and rerouted to SIN-HKG business, and HKG on Cathay Pacific economy. Flights in economy plus were ok and I appreciated the extra leg room. Plenty of liquids were offered throughout the flight and staff was generally friendly (with a few exceptions). No seat back videos between Tokyo and LA. As for business, the food, seat, headphones and staff were a bit nicer, and I was offered earplugs, and other stuff that used to be free in economy on some airlines. That was it! The inflight entertainment system was way better in Cathay Pacific economy than in United business. The headrest in business had to be lowered during take off and landing which meant that it was cutting in to my shoulders (I'm 6ft) during those parts of the flight. This is what I was offered for being voluntarily offloaded: 400 US dollars in travel vouchers on United (or 200 cash), and hotel in Hong Kong. After some nagging at several times I also got upgraded to business on one flight, one HKD40 meal voucher (after having explained to them that the hotel did not offer free food), and access to the red carpet club lounge in Tokyo. The hotel at Hong Kong airport (Regal) was relatively ok, but had a few minor downers e.g. no free wireless internet. Basically United is not top notch, but it is ok.

LAX-SFO-SJU-IDA-LHR. Used United as the mid-part of a Star Alliance round the world ticket. The leg from San Francisco to San Juan involved a transit in Chicago, with about 50 minutes bewteen flights. As each of the flights was just less than 5 hours, the only food available on board each flight was a food box. As someone with a gluten allergy, I could not eat any of the box selections, and there was insufficient time in Chicago to buy anything. So it was like being on a 10 hour flight without any food, and there wasn't much available in San Juan on arrival at 12am! The Dulles-Heathrow flight was on a aging 777, with seatback IFE but no on-demand function. Some of the channels on my unit did not work. Service was polite on all segments, but not especially friendly. Overall, the experience was just OK. Certainly more attention to meal selection would be appreciated, as would better IFE and a freshening up of cabins that look like they are all 20 years old.

LHR-ORD-DEN, in Economy on a Wednesday afternoon the 777 was 1/4 full if that. Great service from the crew and able to use Economy Plus which is the main reason I use United. Onward to Denver was a very full 767 which had seen better days but OK. Again the crew were friendly and the captain even came down the back to introduce himself rather than use the PA - nice touch. Overall a good experience.

I flew LHR to JFK and UA were great. Always happy even late at night and one of the crew members who was on both flights even recognised us! I have flown with Virgin before and thought they were good but have to say United were better!

SFO-JFK Wanted to give United a try again, after switching to JetBlue a few years ago. I'm staying with Jetblue. Coach to coach does not compare. United seat pitch is too small. Economy plus does match up to Jetblue. United crew members as a rule are understandably not as motivated as Jetblue. The latter have profit sharing, and their company actually makes a profit. Inflight entertainment - United is old tech vs Jetblue..Direct TV. I travel five times a year from NYC to SFO on business. Although it costs me an extra ten minutes or so to land in OAK vs SFO, I'll go Jetblue into OAK hands down.

SFO to SYD Economy plus. My concern is entertainment. How in this day and age to have a projector for a 14 hour flight is unacceptable. If you are saving costs please let there be an option of DVD players with installed movies for hire like on Pacific blue. Passengers like me are happy to pay for it.

SYD to LAX , LAX to DEN,DEN to Eagle, DEN to NY, Calgary to SFO, SFO to SYD, First flight to LAX was good, upgraded to Business class and it was comfortable, and FA's great. Seats comfy, food ok, but entertainment was only of economy standard. LAX to Denver ok, no food, no entertainment, but friendly FA's, All other flights were terrible. You get nothing unless you pay for it, and what you pay for is horrible. Some of the airport staff particularly in JFK and SFO were disgraceful, never seen the likes of the rudeness we encountered.
