Chicago ORD to Vancouver YVR Economy, two adults two children. We arrived 4 hours early to check in, were told we had to use self check-in (for which the line-up was 20 min). Self check-in didn't give us seats together, so we asked to see a representative. 45 min later a clerk was available for us; she said she could get us in the same row, but still not sitting beside each other. We said fine. Then she looked at our (Canadian) passports and told us that she couldn't check us in until our 8 year old signed his passport. Children under 16 are not supposed to sign their passports, and their parents are not supposed to sign for them. We explained this, but were met with hostile inflexibility. One hour and 4 various "supervisors" later, after being told repeatedly we would not be allowed to board the airplane if we didn't sign the passport (which we knew would invalidate it), a passing United official realized it was a Canadian passport. "Oh, we have no jurisdiction over Canadian passports," he said. "Go ahead and check them in." By this time the clerk told us she couldn't get us seats together. (This is still 2 hours prior to boarding).) She said we could ask at the boarding desk, but when we got to the boarding desk and someone finally showed up there he very rudely told us "the flight is full there's no way to change your seats." Period. Fortunately a flight attendant was kind enough to ask a passenger to trade seats so at least I could sit with my younger child. He was the only United employee we met in Chicago who was the least bit helpful, considerate, or competent. We will never fly United again.

ORD-FRA-SFO Economy. Clean B777 equipment, comfortable seating, even though I didn't pay the extra fee for Economy Plus. Decent selection of IFE. Food marginal but plentiful and acceptable. Recommend the pasta, the chicken was dried out and difficult to cut with plastic. FAs attentive and pleasant (more typical of Lufthansa, which this flight was code-shared with, than my normal experience with United.)

LHR-IAD-LHR Economy. No real complaints on the way out. Flight departed on time, food acceptable although I find it irritating that United charge Economy passengers for alcoholic drinks from UK to US yet from France to US - these are still free. Flight back to UK minor delays, grumpy FA, barely smiled, and only appeared during meal times, food less than acceptable and breakfast some fruit, piece of cake and 1 cup of coffee.

ORD-NRT Y class. Re-routed through Chicago after missing outbound flight to Washington, rebooked on UAL881 from ANA 0012. Dirty, unmaintained B777-200, I don't even think groomers had been through the plane as I found garbage in the seat pocket, and a soggy, ripped aircraft safety card. FA's barely welcomed me, a prelude to the uninspired service that was to come. Flight took off on time. Disgusting cold chicken and teriyaki sauce served over soggy udon noodles dinner. If United Airlines management wants to alert their passengers they're doing serious onboard cost-cutting on their international routes, mission accomplished. Absolutely no cabin presence except during mealtimes for a 13-hour flight. My seatback screen was barely working, I had to play around with its position a bit and push around the edges of the screen to get it working for periods of time. Then the left headphone started making a screeching noise which remained for the rest of the flight. (I set the screen to airshow and just read a book). Flight arrived 9 minutes early. Was glad to get off the plane, and glad my flight back is on ANA.

STL-LAS-LAX-SYD, and back via SYD-LAX-DEN-STL. The plane for this 16 hour flight (which, with mechanical problems after we pulled away from the gate, became an 18 hour flight), seemed to be on its last legs. There were no personal entertainment units in the seats; instead we had a common pull-down screen from the ceiling of the cabin, which did not work. The interior was dirty with rips in the upholstery of the seats, and the food mediocre. Now, when I flew United on the way home, the 2-hour segment from LAX to DEN, I flew on the nicest plane - personal entertainment systems, clean interior. Why was I trapped in a crumbling junker for 18 hours, when I could have been on a nice plane like the one I took from LAX to DEN?

The flight was delayed in average time slots of 10/20 minutes for a total of about 2 hours due to a defective fuel gauge. It was then switched to another plane and gate 3 times. Eventually, we got into a plane - once into the plane it had the same problem as the first - a defective fuel gauge. I wonder if that is the reason they give for all problems and they did not realize that we had heard that before! Anyway to make a long story short - we sat in the plane locked inside for more than an hour while they tried to fix it and then eventually took off about 3.5 hours after the original departure time. I cannot believe that two planes had exact same problem with the plane. Their planes are getting old as it is obvious from the condition. In flight service was OK but in-consistent. For example, the person serving from front was not giving the pretzel bag but the person serving from back was handing those out. Likewise, I got my ginger ale in a small cup but the guy next to me got the whole can! Overall - this airline is completely messed up logistically, plane condition wise, and service wise.

United Business, Frankfurt-Chicago 25 Nov. Just not good enough compared to just about any other international business class flight I've been on. The seats are awful, and didn't work, none of the mechanical controls were fully functional, the entertainment system is just far too out of date, not even having any video games or VOD. Food very ordinary, but staff OK, even they seemed a bit embarrassed by the state of the aircraft. Mind you, being told we had to 'clean up' the floor in front of our seats as we approached landing was a bit much.

SFO/NRT/BKK-SIN/NRT/SFO Y+. The crews were Asian and simply delightful. They were smiling, and someone was always present in the cabin. The lounges in SFO and TYO fail to compare to the lounges of some Star partners but the Singapore facility was quite good.

LAX-HKG-SGN return. Economy Plus on first leg then First Class on subsequent legs. Crew LAX-HKG professional, polite and attentive. Facilities at HKG great. HKG-SGN crew not as "polished" as the LAX-HKG leg but still attentive service. Impeccable service on the way back and definitely on-par with the competition.

IAD-SFO and SFO-DEN-IAD on 767 outbound and 319/757 return. Economy plus on all legs except DEN-IAD which was in first. UAL rewards loyal and frequent customers well, which is why I keep coming back. Economy plus seating is great with extra leg-room, and back of seat displays on the 767 also nice. Little food to speak of in economy. Dinner in 1st class was good, and came with unlimited wine. The one caution note I have for other travellers is UAL sometimes oversells trans-continental flights. If they can't get enough volunteers like me to go back an indirect route or a later flight, someone will be bumped to another flight. If you are paying a really low fare and not a FF mile member, I recommend booking a flight no later than late morning, so that if you get bumped, they can still get you back on the same day.

LAX-IAD-LAX Economy. Service on the outbound flight pleasant. Seat comfortable, movie entertaining, fruit and cheese offering for breakfast a pleasant departure, although twice as much (10$) as the snack packs. Frequent offers for refills on beverages. At IAD, staff at gate didn't monitor boarding assignments very well and seemed to be disoriented. Return trip on 757 much less comfortable, but service was above average. Didn't purchase meal. Location of monitors not as good a location for viewing.

ORD-SFO-ORD economy class. Checked through from MAN at ORD, but time was inadequate for the security queues. Checkin at SFO automated and chaotic. Flight departed on time in both directions. Cabin staff friendly and helpful. Legroom very poor. Quality of food available terrible. Could not even buy a sandwich. I would not have another snack box if it was free, never mind paying for it! Inflight entertainment OK on the 767 with individual TV screens, whereas the 777 did not have this facility.

Business class ORD-HKG-SIN return in 747-400 upper deck last week. The old seats are not BA or Singapore Airlines standard - I used my rolling luggage to raise my legs up - but the cabin was quiet and I did get some sleep both ways. Cabin staff were good ORD-HKG but the Singapore based staff were really excellent. Cabin lights could not be turned off inbound to ORD so we were offered miles or a voucher as an apology. Food good, did not use the entertainment. Better than expected given some poor reviews I had read. According to a colleague the lower deck is much noisier, especially rear seats next to economy, so I would stick to the upper deck if you can. Superb lounge in HKG on outbound made up for lack of food on the 15 hour ride.

LHR-SFO and SAN-SFO-LHR, in economy. Outbound flight on time - however food and entertainment not on par with my last transatlantic (BA) flight. Leg room acceptable for Y and drink runs were frequent. For the return flight, UA had kept rearranging the times of the SAN-SFO flight such that what had been originally a 3 hour connection at SFO had been reduced to 1.5 hours. When we checked in at SAN we enquired whether our flight was on time and whether we could be transferred onto an earlier flight (UA runs multiple flights between SAN and SFO). Was reassured by check in agent that our flight was running on time. However, once through security our flight started showing a delay. Asked gate agent whether we could transfer to an earlier flight but was told there was no space. Agent didn't seem concerned about us missing our connection at SFO and seemed to just want to ignore us. Plane didn't end up arriving at the gate at SAN until an hour after our scheduled departure time (surely they would have known about this delay when we checked in?) As a result we ended up having to literally run through SFO in order to make our connection (was the last flight back to Europe that evening). Once airborne, it took almost two hours for meal to be served. Once the first meal had been cleared, drinks service was non-existent for the rest of the night and we found ourselves getting dehydrated. Had to go to back of plane to ask for water, where FAs were chatting amongst themselves and seemed annoyed to be interrupted. "Breakfast" consisted of a roll containing some strange unidentifiable paste.

IAD to CDG Business Class in 777 which was comfortable enough but 7 hours was about all one could take in that seat. Took 2 hours to serve dinner, which is a pain if you want to eat and sleep. Food was economy level on nicer plates. Rolls at dinner and croissants at breakfast were very stale. Not much on the entertainment front. On the good side, the FA's were much improved from trips past (faint praise I know, but it's a start). They were friendly and attentive, although I think they are too informal with the passengers (one always seems very aware of how the FA is feeling about the trip) and not the model of precision service one sees from BA, SQ, etc. Ground crew at IAD gate were a mess and did not seem to know how to board a plane. Overall I'd rate this a 3.5 star with high hopes that United will continue to try to improve its product.

Chicago-Honolulu-Chicago, Economy Plus & Economy on B-777-200. The crew was attentive, sociable and made frequent runs for a variety of refreshments and trash pick-ups. The fact that there are no more hot meals served was fine with me since I was able to bring my own meals. My seats were very clean and comfortable and included a long blanket, a pillow and good quality headsets.

ORD-BOS in economy plus. Aircraft a 757-200. No meal service on this flight, but you are welcome to bring you own food, which we did. Drinks comPlimentary, except fOR alcoholic drinks, which they would charge $5. Other than that a nice flight. Very good legroom in the economy plus section. FA's were friendly and attentive. I would book with UA again based on this flight - I found them better thaN AA, and the extra legroom in economy plus was SO worth the extra money.

SYD-SFO-SYD Business Class. Used points to upgrade to Business Class for this journey. Seats are showing their age but were comfortable. Will be interested to see what the revamp of seating in Business Class will bring. Service very good and crew were attentive. Food on the flight was very good. Inflight entertainment via individual swing-up screens was a tad limited in selection and some crackle evident via audio - hopefully this will change with the upcoming schedule of cabin refits. The return flight was equally satisfying in terms of food and service.

Flew United from Sydney to San Francisco with 12 month old. Flight was made a nightmare by the fact they demanded that I remove my sleeping baby from the basinette every time the seat belt sign went on. The second time she screamed for the full 40 minutes the seat belt sign was on and only stopped when I was finally able to get up and walk her around. The next time I was way too scared to put her back in again so I held her for two hours, and after that she woke up. (the seat belt sign kept coming on all the time - they said that if I left her in she could be a danger if we did hit turbulence by being thrown around the cabin, but the flight attendants were still up and about - I bet they'd create more damage than my less than 20 lb baby). I flew on Air NZ into Auckland (NZ) and Air NZ had no such rules - they just let the baby happily sleep for 8 hrs of the flight. I also was told they did not provide food suitable for a 12 month old, so I packed all my own. The flight attendants then bought me freezing cold canned food. I'm sure they would have warmed it if I could have gotten their attention to ask - but it would have been even better had their call center known. Apart from that it was a normally boring flight.

DFW-DEN-DFW in Economy Plus. Decided to give United a try on this route instead of AA, since return evening flights from DEN have better timings. Plenty of room, with 38 inch seat pitch and the middle seat kept free, but mediocre service. The FAs weren't rude, but basically handed out the snack mix and drink and then disappeared for the rest of the flight. This was a particular problem on the DEN- DFW sector, when they didn't even give you the full can (just one small plastic cup), but never came by to check on refills. It's also annoying that Premier status can't use the First/Business security line at DEN, even though other airlines allow "Gold" equivalents to use it. All sectors departed and arrived on-time. I'll stick with AA next time.

United Express Chicago-Fargo-Denver recently on their Bombardier Commuter aircraft. Onboard service with coffee was quite good and all flights on time. The United mainline service from Denver to Chicago O'Hare in First was quite good. The flight in an ageing B757 was good, mainly due to the fine service and quite good wine served by hard working cabin staff. Dinner was so-so. The flight crews were very good, especially with updates on the weather. Overall, makes 4 Stars, I reckon.

SFO to LIH return. Y class. The outbound flight to Lihue, Hawaii was completely full that the gate agent asked for volunteer to fly at a later flight. Boarding was surprisingly chaotic as people had no intention to board according to the boarding zone. Some couples arrived not late but after majority of passengers have checked and could not sit together. Flight attendants had to deal with this drama while the plane was held at the gate. Boeing 757 was worn and I had the most crammed economy seat. There were not enough headsets for everyone to enjoy the movie so I gave mine up at the purser's announcement. The food for purchase was not bad with edible chicken wrap and chips. I have to say United delivers fair service in this market but an upgrade of equipment would be appreciated. I'll fly them again only because I'm a Mileage Plus member. My main gripe is that for almost $500 I get a crammed seat that the only way out to this is to pay an extra $54 for economy plus.

LHR-ORD-LHR First. Better than expected based on recent UA flights on this route. First class suites are falling apart but still work enough to allow for a relatively decent sleep. The food is very hit and miss. On the way out they only loaded 1 each of 2 of the breakfast choices leaving the other 10 passengers in F with just the scrambled eggs to 'choose' from. However the lunch of lamb curry was outstanding. Food on the return was poor. The service has improved considerably. The flight attendants were all experienced and did an excellent job. Much, much better than previous trips. UA are starting to get their act together again it seems.

PDX-LAX-OGG in First. Despite an awful flight on my way over in economy plus, My return trip in first class was a pleasant surprise from United. Flight exhibited great improvement in the first class service from what it was several years ago. Both aircraft were 757's which offer a decent sized domestic first class seat with sufficient legroom, and a comfortable seat. Flight crews were excellent, especially on LAX-OGG leg. The food was very good compared to my previous experiences, with a French toast, and breakfast meat breakfast on my morning flight, and then a meal designed by Trader Vic's restaurant on my afternoon flight. I must say that United is working towards great improvement at least in their First class, and hopefully economy won't be far behind.

SFO-IAD-BTV-ORD-SJC, mix of first and economy. 767, 737, regional jet. The economy in the 767 was comfortable - the 2 seat configurations on the outside are perfect for couples, make the transcontinental flights more enjoyable. Leg room still cramped for a six foot person. Domestic first is not great, but still comfortable compared to non-first--and the service was excellent! Aging planes, mediocre food. Suprisingly, 3 out 4 flights departed on time, and all arrived on time. Would agree with other comments that the inflight service continues to improve and compensates for a lot of the staleness or even unpleasantness of the United experience. Ground staff not nearly as friendly though, especially in SFO.

LHR-SFO-SYD and back in United First and Business. Although the seats are certainly showing their age, as were the bathrooms and IFE, United's general service standards have much improved over the past year. FA's although very seasoned, are professional and gave efficient service with a genuine smile. The SFO-SYD leg seems only to be staffed by very very senior FA's. The food and wine on all selections has much improved over recent years. I just wish the ice cream desert would sometimes vary. The lounge staff at LHR are excellent and do tend to remember FF names at the club. Ground staff in Sydney are also always really helpful and just plain nice. US staff especially gate staff need more 'customer training' though. self-checkin machines don't seem to work that well outside the US and one cannot check-in on-line unlike with other airlines on international flights. I fly around 200,000 miles p/a with more than half on United across the pond. I'm looking forward to UA's new Business and First Class products which are due to be introduced over the next two years. Well-done United keep up the improvements to standards and please re-introduce to LHR-JFK direct flight, as connecting in Washington is a real nightmare.

LHR-SFO-FRA. LHR to SFO on an old 747 economy with no individual entertainment units - not good for an eleven hour flight! Crew worked hard, friendly and gave individual service. SFO to FRA leg what a difference - crew disappeared for six hours. People were pressing the crew buttons and nobody came. Seatbelt light went on no checks made and no crew to be seen. Service appalling to say the least. Staff at SFO also seemed uninterested. Boeing 777 with all mod cons the only saving grace but this was a two star flight at best.

SIN-NRT-LAX on business and first. SIN-NRT service was very good, food was not too bad. Hardly any reading material on C class. In NRT I used the Red Carpet Club which is renovated since my visits in the past. Nice shower rooms, snacks and great internet station. NRT-LAX upgraded, and in first on this long flight they still didn't have any reading material. The food was better. The service on this was very good with the US based crew.

Palm Springs to Denver (in Economy), then to Fort Worth (in First). First leg delayed departing. Would have missed connection but that flight had been cancelled anyhow because of crew problems. United staff rebooked me on the next day's flight but in Economy, not First. This was corrected by a United ticketing agent, but boarding pass was still issued in Economy. Arrived at the airport the next day, having been put up in Denver overnight, to find my new flight was also delayed - finally arrived three hours late. This ruined holiday plans, so elected to bring my Chicago leg forward - but United had cancelled the next available flight. Waited until my scheduled 6pm departure, but airport monitors then showed flight delayed two hours. Walked past gate by pure chance, only to discover the flight was indeed leaving on time - caught it with minutes to spare. Ranking for this trip : 1. Sydney to San Francisco in Business Class, upstairs in a 747-400. Flight departed and arrived on time. Plane had new livery but something has to be done about those circa 80s carpet walls! United is about to introduce its new Business Class, so seat not lie-flat but serviceable - grabbed about 3 hours sleep. Food a big improvement from my last trip with United - a substantial three-course meal with a nice barramundi for main. Service of a good standard from two attendants (however, on a recent trip with Singapore Airlines I noted that they use three crew upstairs). Ranking for this trip :4.

I am a premier executive level flyer with United, so take them whenever I can. So far in 2007, I have travelled with United twice to Hawaii (BWI-ORD-KOA)(IAD-SFO-KOA), and once to Munich. All flights were upgraded from the class below. United regards its Hawaii service as domestic, and its domestic First Class seats are way less comfortable than its international Business Class seats. That is a big issue on the ORD-KOA flight, which is 8-1/2 hours long (United Flight #3). The flight is on a 777, anbd United should install true business class seats, even if it charges more for them. For the flight to Munich, I flew First Class in a three class 777. A friend flying with me upgraded from coach to business on the same flight. Service and comfort in both classes was acceptable or better, and everything worked as it should. By and large, United's service is pretty good. Although there have been occasional flight delays, for the most part, United's staff is friendly and professional, and the food in First Class may not be gourmet, but is edible. FA's on most recent flight home from Kona were great on the flight to SFO, considerably less so on SFO-IAD flight. It took us almost an hour to get our bags at 6:15 AM in the morning at IAD, clearly not satisfactory. Because I have accrued many miles in United's frequent flyer program, United is my airline of choice. United also has the most frequent service to Kona, so again, it is the airline of choice for travel there.

SYD-SFO-LAX economy. The inflight entertainment wasn't up to scratch - on our 747s there and back all there was was 2 or 3 projector screens through the cabin showing one program. For a 14 hour flight you at least want personal screens. The food was equally boring - the most uninteresting food you could possibly wish for. Getting to SFO we went through immigration quickly not going to any of the duty free shops as we had our connecting flight to catch. We then learnt, however, that this one was delayed by over two hours. It was pushed back even later as the flight attendants continued to offer bigger and better compensation for someone to be pushed off the flight because it was overbooked. Eventually we got on the flight and it was a very old and tired 737. On the way back the flight to SFO was delayed again. We had booked an earlier flight so that we would have more time to make our connection to SYD. What we didn't count on was that the earlier flight that we booked would leave later than the later flight which we didn't catch. We rushed through SFO to make our flight back to SYD. They did upgrade us to economy plus for this one though which was good. The extra 5 inches of legroom were very welcome but the seats were just as uncomfortable as ever. Overall, united is an airline with an aging fleet, serious punctuality problems and a flight crew who tries their best to overcome this.

BOS-PRD-Shanghai, and Seoul-SFO-BOS. Nothing terribly wrong, but overall unpleasant. BOS-ORD flight was cancelled after sitting in plane for 30 minutes because it did not have proper pilot or instrumentation for weather but they moved all the Shanghai travelers over to another flight and we (and our luggage) still made the Chicago leg. As an elite flier I get free upgrade to Economy Plus - but not on the Shanghai trip as I booked last minute. Discovered that the economy seats are cramped and unpleasant and painful after so many hours. The planes are showing signs of age -- cushions that feel old; bathrooms stink; a musty reek pervades the United fleet. TV on the Shanghai flight had a fuzzy/scrolling picture and the team kept trying to fix it but could not. The international food varies between OK and terrible. Flight attendants on all legs were clearly bored. There is no domestic food, unless you want to pay them $5 - it is infuriating when they want to charge you $5 for a simple sandwich on a 6-hour flight? Overall, I keep flying United due to the Elite status and the fast check- in, some lounge access, and early boarding so you have overhead room. If another airline offered to match that, I would switch happily.

GRB to KOA return. As much comfort as one can expect in an economy seat; entertainment was average. Impressed by attentiveness of cabin crew. I've made this trip several times on some of the competitors and would say UAL has the edge right now. When I missed my connection to GRB due to a late arrival from KOA, the customer service staff arranged passage on an American flight, saving me a 5 hour wait at ORD. They were cordial and helpful.

LHR-SFO-LHR Business class. Speedy check in - fast track security and excellent lounge at Heathrow. Upper deck of 747 comfortable cradle seat. Excellent service and meal (Fillet Mignon). On time departure and arrival. Online check in on return, Lounge at SFO busy but good. Meals on return hyped Charlie Trotter menu - way too rich for airline food, not my taste at all. On time arrival at LHR fast track immigration and priority luggage, in taxi 25 minutes after landing - is this a record?

UA business class. There is the occasional excellent FA, and every now and again I get a seat that's fully functional. Food is decent, but wouldn't it be nice if the menu changed more than once a quarter? I'd give UA Asia business class 1.5 stars for FA, and 2 stars for old equipment. Mileage Plus and particularly Global Services are strengths. On the occasions that I use 1st class (courtesy or certificate upgrades), service is much better - perhaps 3.5 stars, but equipment still doesn't compare with business class on non-US airlines.

LAX-MEX First Class. A shortish (3.5hour) flight that was very pleasant. Only 4 seats in First on this A319 plane (normally flown with an A320). The food was quite decent (included a tomato bisque soup- why dont airlines serve soup more?). The steward was an old timer who was most attentive and helpful without being fawning. Chicago ORD to Frankfurt FRA and back on United. Seating on both flights (747-400 / 777-200) was satisfactory. Food service adequate, as was IFE. What made this flight better than average was the cabin crew. All in all a pleasant experience.

SGN-HKG in economy. Discussions at checkin due to 'overweight'. UA agent was not aware of Star Alliance status and privileges and refused to check with LH, the airline I have bought the ticket with. Finally 'agreed' to pay for 10kg overweight to HKG, even booked on an onward journey to Europe (fortunately with LH) and weight of my luggage still within the limit. Luggage retrieval in HKG and check-in necessary. No access to the Star Alliance lounge in SGN, despite being entitled to. Upgrade to upper deck when boarding but no service on board and flight attendants leaving aircraft at the same time as passengers did. At any cost, never again with United.

Mainly SYD-LAX and LAX-LHR flights but also some US domestic. The entertainment system is a little outdated particularly in coach and the seats are a little cramped even in economy plus. If SYD-LAX is UA's big cash making route then they should upgrade the entertainment system to seat back entertainment as it would make a 14+ hour trip in a packed out flight with cramped seats way more bearable. I have used my Milage Plus miles to upgrade and get free tickets lots of times and recommend anyone to join Milage Plus. UA are low cost and get you there, and have a very good frequent flier programme."

STL-DEN in Economy Plus. Online check-in easy to use. Security at STL more congested than I expected. Flight delayed approximately 45 minutes due to weather, though the gate staff made regular announcements. They even gave everyone fair warning about 15 minutes before boarding that there may be a lot of turbulence enroute which would cause extended use of the seatbelt sign - a nice touch as it gave me time to use the restroom and grab a couple of books. As it turned out, the flight was quite smooth. Economy Plus seat had great pitch, and United leaves the middle seat empty in these rows, so there was plenty of room to get comfortable. No food as is typical on short domestic flights, but two drink rounds were made, and FAs were friendly and efficient.

Kona to SFO first Class. A very positive experience. A pleasant senior crew offered very acceptable service level on this 767 flight. Service has improved greatly in the premium cabin at UA. Better check in, better boarding and better in flight service.

TPE-NRT Business Class on B777. Seats are still old style (not lie flat) but quite comfortable for a 3.5hr flight. IFE Monitor are really small. All flight attendants where Asian - friendly and attentive. Food was good.

FRA to IAD. Service on board was okay. Drinks and food normal for Transatlantic flight. Flight entertainment included only main movie screen. Anyway I prefer United better than Delta on international flights, as United provides better service.

HKG-SIN-HKG. Both flights on time. Flight attendants friendly and offered great service. Meal service good. The entertainment systems is a bit outdated on the 747 but adequate for a short 3.5 hour flight. UA offered excellent fares on the routes. Fares are much lower than SQ and CX and only slightly more expensive than JetStarAsia on that route. Overall UA offers very good value for money and I will definitely fly with them for my next trip to Singapore.

Washington Dulles to Rio de Janeiro return in first class - awful flight. Seats are uncomfortable on United's B767. Inflight entertainment did not work, the reading light came on every few minutes, so there was no sleep. The plane stops in Sao Paolo for three hours. My bags were unloaded in Sao Paolo, not at my destination, and it took 36 hours to retrieve them with no help from United. Of the four cabin crews I flew with, one was entirely unhelpful, the others a bit too casual and not very efficient. United lounges are not great, at Dulles the product selection was downgraded recently. At least the flights were on time.

LAX-IAD and a few weeks later LHR-LAX. All economy class- 757 on first route and 777 on second. Checking-in at LAX was very slow. We left LA over an hour behind schedule and were about an hour behind schedule in Dulles Int'l. I found the seats in the 757 too small for my size. The food on the D.C. route was all for sale and considering what you pay for it I don't think you get value for your dollars. The 777 although much bigger didn't offer a lot of legroom either. The food was OK- nothing special. The flight attendants on the Heathrow to LA route were slow to respond when called . The headphones I was given in the 777 did not work. FA seemed a little annoyed with me when I complained about it. They gave me a new set but they didn't work either (I think there was something wrong with the plug-in port). So I couldn't do anything but read on the 11+ hour daytime flight. I couldn't take another seat since the plane was packed. Next time I fly internationally I would rather choose another airline in the same price category.

I recently flew United from LHR using their Chicago hub to go to MSP and DTW. The flight from LHR to ORD was fine. IFE had a good choice of movies although they work on a play/rewind system meaning that if you need to visit the rest room you have to wait until the next showing before catching up with the part you've missed! Food was good and all choices were available. The internal flights for the US were a different matter. Every flight was late meaning I arrived at hotels at a very unreasonable hour - 1:30am in Detroit when I should have been there by 10:30pm! Only some of this was due to weather. In all cases, the crew were friendly but the service seemed pretty basic even for short haul flying. Nothing was bad about the flights but there was nothing special either. 'Functional' is probably my best one word description of the United flights. However, I'm not sure if any other US carrier would have been any different.

Orlando to Maui with a connection in Chicago. I got a really good price in first class. The cabin crew from Chicago to Maui provided great service. I found out prior to landing that the youngest flight attendant on the flight had 36 years with United. Impressive! They were dedicated individuals and it showed. The return flight through LAX was nice as well as was the purser on the all nighter to MCO. I had to fly one leg on Ted from MCO-ORD and did not care for it. Southwest seats are more comfortable and the ABC boarding lines are better organized than Ted. Also, blankets were only provided in Economy Plus on Ted, but on Southwest there is an entire bin full on every flight.
