Singapore-Tokyo-Washington-Miami. Flight pleasant from Singapore to Narita - B777 reasonable
leg room and flight attendants mainly Japanese, pleasant and very attentive. But food quality
not up to the standard. Tokyo to Washington was not as great - Boeing 747 seat really narrow.
The journey got worse hen the flight stewardess (apparently having a bad day) did not smile
the whole trip and doesn't like to look at the passengers when taking requests from them. The
reason I chose United it was because I need to get the cheapest airfare for me to get
reimbursement from my company otherwise other major airlines will be first choice.

ORD-LHR-ORD in business class on 767s, which have the new business class product - a dramatic
improvement over their old business class, which is on their 777s. As someone who has flown
American and United Airlines new business classes, I am sharing my opinions on how the two
compare. United Airlines seats are more comfortable - they go fully flat and are spacious
enough that I was able to sleep comfortably even though I'm 6'4". American Airlines has
'angled lie-flat' seats, which feel like you are always slipping. Also, it felt like there
wasn't as much legroom on American. United Airlines IFE wins again - TVs are larger and there
is more and better selection. United shows the real and (as far as I could tell) un-edited
versions of the movies, while I think American still shows the Disney versions of movies,
which is somewhat annoying. Food/beverages, I'd call it a draw between the two. Both served
perfectly fine airplane food, but neither excel in this area. Service also a draw. The
flight attendants for both carriers were pleasant but neither did anything that was truly
memorable. United Airlines wins for intangibles - I like the ability to charge my iPod and use
a real outlet that doesn't require an adaptor. Even though American recently 'upgraded' its
business class product, they did a poor job of researching consumer demand and market trends.
They've only had this new product for 1-2 years, and already it's out of date.

LHR-IAD-ATL-IAD-LHR. B777 with old Business Class on the way over. Seat wide, but flat and
unsupportive. Headrest very uncomfortable when lowered which is required for take-off and
landing. Service surprisingly good from British-based crew. IFE quality was poor on tiny
screen. Flight was on time but lengthy queues in immigration. United stated that 1h30 would
be sufficient connection at ATL but I spent 55 min in non-US queue then had to redo security
and change terminals. Connection times probably reliable only if you have a US passport.
Missed my UA flight to ATL so took DL at additional cost but avoided waiting 5 hours for next
connection. B767 on the way back with new configuration. Seats are narrower than B777 but
vastly more comfortable. Contrary to some reports of no storage whatsoever, there is a small
niche between seat and the inner armrest for spectacles, paperback etc. They should add a net
pocket or some such for pillows & blankets. As it is they are pre-distributed on seats on
boarding and you have to then store them away for takeoff. IFE very good quality and a
sufficient range of titles.

ORD-NRT-SIN-HKG-ORD in Business. Was on the new 747 in all legs except for NRT to SIN, which
was old 777. The seats in the 747 were very comfortable compared to the old Business class
seats. IFE was good but did not have vast selection compared to other airlines. Service was
ok (mind you that I was in business and not coach and I'm 1k. If in coach, your asking for
water would be like asking for the flight attendant's life). Had noise reduction headphones
but no noise reduction. when in noise reduction mode, it gave out a deafening loud pitch.
Service in NRT to SIN and SIN to HKG was excellent - we had FAs based in asia and their
attitude was so different compared to US based counterparts. I fly UA because I have to. I
don't know why anyone would pay money to fly UA when they can spend the same amount on other
carriers for superior services.

FCO-IAD-SFO. Check-in atRome was unpleasant as the US carriers are all based in Terminal 5,
which requires riding on a shuttle bus once you get through emigration. The shared lounge was
OK - better food than a domestic Red Carpet Club but not as nice as most European Lounges.
Boarding in Rome a bit chaotic and poorly managed. Onboard was in the exit rows of an
international 767 and a domestic 777. The meal on the FCO-IAD segment was tasty and adequate
food was provided. Flight attendants friendly and visible throughout the flight. Water
offered at regular intervals. IAD-SFO purchased sandwich was OK, and crew friendly and
visible.

SYR-ORD-DEN on 757-200. UA connecting flight from SYR to ORD was delayed, so was put on a
flight on AA. But then the UA connecting flight was back on time and I saw it leave as I was
waited in the terminal for the AA flight to board. Got upgraded to first using 500 mile
upgrades once I arrived at ORD. First class seat did not recline until FA fixed it, overhead
light switch did not work right, no audio until FA banged the console, then no head phone in
seat pocket (FA went and found one for me), and then the audio was so fuzzy that I couldn't
hear the movie anyway. Went to the washroom only to find the undersink cupboard swinging wide
open. So, mechanical state of aircraft appalling, but FA's worked hard to overcome the ageing
equipment they had to work with.

LHR-IAD-LGA return. The first leg was on a 767, internal flights E135 and 777 return. When
flying UA I have a low expectation level so when a reasonable level of service is provided I
am surprised. The long haul flights had a UK based crew on both legs and they were friendly
and cheerful. The food was pretty rubbish, IFE worked (not AVOD) and the choice of films
limited. Internal flights on small regional jets and for a 45 minute flight all was fine
drinks available on request and flights on time. The tickets cost £237 after taking off a
$250 voucher (compensation for a 6 hour delayed flight last year) the flights were on time or
slightly early so overall a good experience for the money.

I was shocked by the shabbiness of the interior of the B757 on my SFO-PDX flight. Seats
mismatched and falling apart, overhead monitors all with different colors on the screen, and
overhead compartments sort of a tobacco-yellow dirty color - looked like they had not been
cleaned in 10 years. Overall, a very depressing sight. All of this in contrast to the flights
I had recently experienced on EVA and Vietnam Airlines with equipment which was in excellent
condition.

LHR-IAD First. Check in at T1 was excellent. Dedicated desk, no line required. F lounge in
T1 was good - ample space and good selection of drinks and food with english breakfast to
order. Onboard experience definitely sub-par. Offering of magazines very limited.
Entertainment system very antiquated and selection of videos poor. Food mediocre - at best
similar quality than other airline's business class offerings. Old F seat very comfortable.
Staff okay but aware they are offering a sub-par product and behave as such. It is an
attitude - they don't offer anything special and they have no interest whatsoever in making
passengers feel they are in for a special experience. Planes and food will eventually be
improved and modernized, but I wonder if the mindset of mediocrity that has crept into the
airline will ever change.

IAD-CDG on B777. Other than a delay owing to a passenger falling ill prior to takeoff
(necessitating a return to the gate), the flight was excellent. While not as up-to-date as
other airlines, seating is comfortable and managed to sleep a bit. Meal was good and well
presented. Staff very pleasant and helpful.

MUC-IAD on Boeing 777. There were only a small number of us in first class, FAs attentive and
overall it was a good flight. United continues to lag behind most other airlines in quality
and comfort in first and business class. This seating was tired and worn, and at the start of
the flight none of the in-seat electronics worked - not even the overhead lights and FA call
buttons. After about a half hour of fiddling, the FAs got it all working. I fly frequently
on United and am a 1K member, and every time I board I hope to see something other than the
tired old mechanical seats in business and the horridly uncomfortable "lie flat" seats in
first. United continues to disappoint in the premium service areas, and simply can't compare
with many other international airlines.

SFO-BOS-SFO Boarding managed efficiently; passengers not allowed to board outside of their
seating group, which I appreciated because I have star alliance gold status. Seated in exit
row of a 757 both ways, consequently excellent leg room. Flight attendants friendly, prompt
service after take off. Outbound purchased bagel, cream cheese and yogurt for $5, which was
edible enough. Return purchased wrap sandwich which was OK but not worth the $9. Beverage
services about an hour before landing in each direction, and water offered multiple times.
Plane clean, but the old overhead monitors on the 757 are showing their age. Pillows and
blankets are non-existent.

First time with United (by accident because of codeshare with Lufthansa), from Orlando via
Washington Dulles to Frankfurt. First leg OK, although a little snack would have been nice.
Plane seen better times. Washington to Frankfurt was where things got messy. First, after
boarding we were told we would wait for passengers from a connecting flight from Orlando.
Since I had been on the scheduled connecting flight from Orlando and there was another flight
from Dulles to Frankfurt one hour later, the only explanation I have is that that flight was
overbooked and they had to cram some of the passengers into our plane. Over 200 people were
kept waiting for 50 min delay. At least they could have been serving drinks. The B777 was old
- only a tiny personal TV, no AVOD and video shown came from VHS, had distortions and poor
quality. Headphones had obviously already been used by other passengers (hairs, yuck!) and
had a loose connection. Seats worn down. Cabin crew grumpy. Food most definitely subpar and
there was only plastic cutlery and no handtowels were served. I know it is common for US
carriers to charge you for alcoholic beverages, it still annoys the heck out of me to cough up
$6 for a wine that is inferior to the wines I got for free with Lufthansa on the way to
Orlando. Even US Airways has higher quality, and they are cheaper, too.

IAD-MUC return on Boeing 777. Same old-style business seats. Too uncomfortable if you are a
bit taller. Airplane arrived late from Chicago so we left with about 30 minutes delay. Seems
like they were not able to fill-up their kitchen completely - eg. this time there was only 1
white wine out of the usual 2. The video system was not working well, 2 films were without
sound. The headphones don't have the noise-reducing function like in other airlines.

IAD to FRK in new first class. There is no floor storage. Although there is a piece of a
companion seat at the end of the pod, under which one could store a small briefcase, the FA's
insisted that FAA regs required everything in the overhead compartments. With BA, you have
plenty of additional floor storage ahead of your seat under the full jump seat. There were a
couple of small compartments to store additional items. Large AVOD system looked impressive,
but froze up and FA's unable to get it working again. This is not a good sign for such new
equipment. A single small pillow and blanket were provided for sleeping. The fact that the
arm rests drop to give more shoulder room is a plus, but in general the seat is not nearly as
comfortable for sleeping as those in BA First. Food very unexceptional and service
perfunctory. The very gracious service on the Lufthansa flight which followed this one made
UA's service look very poor in comparison. Having flown United, Lufthansa, and BA First class
all in the last month (using miles as I couldn't pay for all of it), I definitely would have
to rank United a distant last.
