Air Transat review - by Mark Burton
18 July 2006
I think Air Transat has a confused offering - is it a full-service, full
price airline or a low-cost carrier? Although some of its lead prices
are fairly cheap, they're not as low as Zoom on the same routes (I few
London Gatwick to Toronto) and there's a club-class option. I few out
Club, back Economy. Economy is fairly cramped but with attentive and
pleasant staff it's a reasonable deal, held back only by the prices
being quite high for what you get (cramped seats, no individual TV
screens and hence choice of in-flight entertainment). Although I'm
generally willing to pay extra for Club to get the greater legroom and
seat width, other parts of the package disappointed me. I can just about
live with the lack of choice of movie in economy (not great for long-
haul) but not when it's the same in Club. Also, they claim to offer a
choice of four meals in Club but they carry only 20 meals for 20
passengers so if you're near the back you don't get a choice. There are
elements of Air Transat that feel like a low-cost carrier, having to pay
50p for headphones) but there are others that seem like a full-fare
carrier (the existence of Club, even if it's disappointing, the
attentive and pleasant staff and the high fares).

We have just flown Air Transat Club class, from Gatwick to Calgary,
returning on 22nd June. We were treated so well this was the best start
to any holiday we have ever had. I would recommend them to anyone.

Manchester to Toronto in Premium Economy. Priority boarding and luggage,
choice of food and drink, plenty of seat space in a comfortable 2-3-3
layout. This meant I arrived relaxed and ahead of the usual build up of
queues at immigration. Just one downer. My partner's priority baggage
tag was separated from the baggage and therefore did not arrive for
quite a while on the belt. I suggest you ask for more than one tag to be
attached. If Air Transat read this then sticky labels may be preferable.

We travelled late May 2006 from Montreal to Athens. I believe in the
old saying, you get what you pay for. The seating is very cramped even
in the last rows with only two seats instead of three. I learned the
hard way, that your comfort and well being is worth more than the couple
of hundred dollars you save by not flying a first class airline. The on
board entertainment/ meal service become secondary if you are extremely
cramped to enjoy them. I spent half the flight standing up near the
washrooms in the back, (I am only 5' 9"). The check in at Athens
International was very slow, just three agents at the counter for a
plane of over three hundred passengers. In fact the line up was by far
the longest of any airline in the airport. Being a charter airline, the
departure hall is a long way from the main airport building. So be
prepared for a long underground passage on moving ramps etc. The choice
is yours, pay a little extra and fly with a first class airline or
save a few dollars and get packed like a sardine.

Toronto-Punta Cuna return. The small extra charge to sit in the Club
Class cabin is worth every cent. As with every flight, no matter the
quality of the product, it is made pleasurable or equally miserable by
the attitude of the cabin staff. In this instance, on both sectors, the
staff couldn't do more, the food and beverage comparable to something
like long haul Air Canada domestic business class service. TS have
improved the quality of their service over the last few years - and as
other contributors have noted, it is unfair to compare Club to
international business class products provided by mainline carriers.
However - when you consider you have to fork out over $5800 CDN for a
full J fare to London and TS charges something in the order of
$1200-$1400 CDN for a Club return - there is really no comparison!

I've been flying with AT since 2001 from MTL to BRUS/PARIS economy
class during Summer, Fall and Spring. I'm about to take my 6th flight
with them this Spring. I travel with my spouse and sometimes with our
teenager with reserved and unreserved seats and find the seats cramped
but acceptable at 5'7'' and 215 lbs. The entertainment is weak but
acceptable. The meals tasty and plentiful for supper. The breakfast
meal, when served, is sparse by NA standards but considering we arrive
in the early morning not a grave concern. I've always found the aircrew
and the ground staff at MTL, BRUSS and PARIS to be very pleasant and
efficient. We've never had any problems with our baggage and the
terminals, save PARIS, are well appointed, user friendly and
conveniently located. The links from all terminals are both efficient
and thrifty. All in all for the price of the ticket and the convenience
of direct point to point service it's very good value for the money when
compared to the cost of other airlines and in the case of BRUSS no need
to make a connection flight from Paris, London, Amsterdam or Frankfurt.
I give this airline 4 out of 5 thumbs up!!

London Gatwick to Toronto in Club Transat, Checking at Gatwick was quick
at the Club counter where your luggage is priority tagged. At the
boarding gate Club passengers are allowed to board the aircraft first.
The seats were wide leather with good legroom and recline, supplied with
pillow and blankets. Prior to take off you were offered headsets,
Canadian newspaper and champagne or orange juice. Left the gate exactly
on time. After take off a menu was given followed by drinks promptly
served with nibbles in a glass dish and full size tumblers, which were
refilled at every opportunity by the very friendly and attentive flight
attendants. The two meals served onboard were to a high quality and were
very nicely presented on china with blue linen table clothes. Metal
cutlery is now also used which is a bonus. Good selection of wine, bread
served with the meal and followed by after dinner liquers and hot
towels. Inflight Entertainment was good with two movies although all on
a main cabin screen. On arrival at Toronto my luggage was on the
carousel 10mins after the plane landed. It was a good flight with Air
Transat and would recommend paying the extra for Club Transat, as it
worth every penny for a comfortable and pleasant flying experience.

Flight #543 Holguin, Cuba via Varadero to Toronto. Originally a 3.5 hr.
flight from Holguin to Toronto we were advised 2 days before leaving Jan
5 that the return would be thru Varadero and would take about 5 hours.
That was bad enough but to receive a cold inadequate sandwich and a
cookie was not sufficient sustenance for being on the go since before
8:00 am to arrive in Toronto at 6:30 pm. The sandwich consisted of an
elongated bun, some shredded lettuce and a thin slice of roast beef,
probably less than 1 oz. One steward in particular was very unfriendly
and rebuked us when we asked for 2 water and 2 coffee stating he only
heard one coffee ordered. He was reluctant to give us the other cup of
coffee. The staff in general did not have a good attitude on this
particular flight possibly due to the extra long flight and the need to
sell duty-free goods as opposed to servicing the needs of the
passengers. We had a continuing flight with West Jet and found their
staff much more pleasant and helpful towards everyone. We will
certainly reconsider our options for flying to Cuba in the future after
this past experience.

6 February 2006
I have flown Air Transat several times from LGW-YVR and back, using the
Premium/Club service. It is EXCELLENT (for the price). The cabin crew on
every flight have always been the MOST attentive and professional crew I
have come across (including BA Club, AA Club and First class, AC club
and United Club) - with the great addition of a sense of humour too.
The seats are good (though I think I was told that some planes on
certain routes have had newer seats installed which are better) and as I
am tall (6'4") the leg room is great. However, to any tall people
reading, forget the regular/economy cabin - they pack you in and the
cabin is nothing more than a cattle wagon (I tried out a seat whilst we
were in Calgary). All in all, well worth the extra $.

Manchester-Toronto return. Flights were on time, planes were clean and
relatively up to date although not much elbow or leg room. Food was
adequate. Cabin crew were friendly and efficient. Films and
entertainment very good. Original booking and administration were
excellent. The flight is direct from Manchester to Toronto but on the
return leg the plane stops in Glasgow to put down passengers, change
crews and for the plane to be cleaned. This stop over was a nightmare
and caused many complaints, especially from travellers on the outward
journey to Manchester. We arrived in Glasgow at 0605 after a shorter
than usual flight. We had to disembark and go through arrivals (very
long queue) and take our hand baggage through the xray machines. We
then had to wait in departures along with other people waiting for the
outgoing flight to Toronto via Manchester - and with other travellers
waiting for flights to everywhere else. We finally arrived in
Manchester just before 10am. It would have been quicker to disembark at
Glasgow and travel by road. Why cannot Glasgow airport have a transit
lounge ? Alternatively, why cannot transit passengers stay on the plane
while it is cleaned? This used to be the case with Canada 3000 or other
airlines that were in transit at Glasgow for Manchester. We have never
known such a long and tiring stop over. But it probably wasn't
Transat's fault.

Munich-Vancouver-Frankfurt. The best value you can get for your money.
We choose Club Class and were not disappointed. Very friendly attentive
staff, enough space, a fine choice of meals and wine. The only thing
they could improve is the very small lunch on their night flights to
Europe.

11 December 2005
Just returned from a holiday to Toronto with my boyfriend and flew with Air Transat from Manchester.
Outbound flight delayed by an hour 'due to a passenger who became ill in Glasgow' where the flight
had just come from. Seating space very cramped. I am only 5'3'' and I found it uncomfortable for
such a long flight. Onboard films were good - Batman Begins, Wallace and Gromit the curse of the
were rabbit and Must Love Dogs. Headphones cheap at 50p but I'd taken my own which I used. Food OK
but you never expect a three-course gourmet meal with any airline. It was chicken and rice, a
selections of beans, a bread roll and a piece of cake. Soft drinks in plentiful supply at no extra
cost. Return journey we flew back via Glasgow. What a nightmare that was. I was expecting to be able to
stay on the plane in Glasgow but had to disembark. Arrived at Glasgow att 6.45am. Had to go through
security checks all over again. What they thought we could have brought on the plane from boarding
in Toronto and a 6hr flight I don't know?! Evenutally reboarded at 8.15am when the flight was due
to leave at 8.25am. Finally took off just after 9 and landed at Manchester at 10am - 35 minutes
late. Have had better and worse flights. Would possibly fly with Air Transat again but price would have to
be right.

Gla to YYZ return in October. Paid extra for Club and would say that it
was worth the extra money in some respects, but not others. The separate
check-in was welcome, tho no lounges are available. The food on the
outbound journey (breakfast) was barely edible. On the return journey
the food was excellent; the main course as good as business class on any
airline. Plenty of drinks, and attentive service. The seats are
perfectly adequate for the price paid,- a bit like domestic business
class on Air Canada- though would have benefited from a footrest. The
seat pitch was probably no more than 34". The cabin was very small and
cramped, and there was not enough space in overhead lockers. IFE was
basic but adequate. Given the cost of the ticket and the quality of
product, I think it would be unfair to compare it to Business Class,
especially as it is a Charter Airline. Perhaps Premium Economy would be
a fairer comparison, although the food and service on the return journey
was as good as any Business product. I would fly with them again as an
alternative to Economy on a scheduled carrier, but if you want a J/C
class experience, you need to pay extra on AC or BA.

20 October 2005
I recently flew from Montreal to Rome return with Air Transat. I have
also flown with them Toronto to Glasgow and Toronto to Holguin Cuba in
the past year. The only reason anyone would choose this Air Transat is
price. Considering this they give good value for money. The usual
complaints you come to expect and live with it. The Seats are very very
cramped. It is unlikely that you will find space for your hand luggage
near your assigned seat which makes for confusion when disembarking. The
washrooms are not too plentiful and tend to be quite dirty by the end of
a transatlantic flight. The aisles are very cramped so don't expect to
make it to the loo when a meal is being served. The meals are mediocre
at best and alcoholic drinks cost you $5 CAD. You may or may not get a
blanket and no reading material is supplied. You have to pay $1 for
earphones and there are not enough screens for everyone to see the movie
which is usually not top of the line anyway. Consider this a good time
to catch up on your best seller reading. If you do want more leg room
without paying the extra for club class you have the option of paying to
book your seat in advance. Choose seats by the emergency exit ( usually
row 13) The disadvantage here is that you have no seat in front of you
to stow things and your tray table which is stowed in your arm rest is
very tiny and a tight fit if you are any one whose waist size exceeds 24
inches. The flight attendants are always courteous and kind. There is
usually one person who speaks a language other than English connected
with the flight destination. On the flight home from Rome one of the
passengers was quite ill and needed oxygen and eventually was taken off
the plane. This delayed the flight by over an hour. The crew was kind
and we were informed of each additional delay caused by this incident. I
thought it was well handled. I think Air Transat often gets a bad rap
but you get what you pay for which is a low priced Airline that offers
basic but friendly service, is usually on time and doesn't lose your
luggage.

Our recent flight Glasgow/Vancouver was OK but Air Transat do not
recognise anyone who is over a size 14. However neither are we obese
but we both had an extremely uncomfortable flight as a consequence and
dreaded the return flight - it having taken our 3 week holiday to get
rid of the bruises gained on the outbound flight. In addition, anyone,
no matter how experienced (which we thought we were) who can eat a meal
in such cramped conditions in a middle seat deserves a medal - or only
has one arm. We will ensure that if we go to Canada again we will never
fly with Air Transat again. The inflight staff were fine - a shame that
we felt like cattle. Glasgow via Manchester to Vancouver (still trying
to find the logic there) was 12 hours of great discomfort.

October 2005
We flew with Air Transat from Manchester to Vancouver, returning from
Toronto. We chose to pay the extra for Club class and it was very good
value as it calculated out at 30% less than the Air Canada cattle class.
The service was excellent with everything advertised being delivered and
as a bonus they now tag Club class baggage as priority so it comes off
first. This time our wait at baggage reclaim at Manchester was less than
5 minutes; last time (different airline) it was over an hour! They have
obviously taken note of the adverse comments posted in 2003 and 2004 and
cleaned their act up.

Manchester-Toronto and return. Flight from Manchester left and arrived
on time so a good start. We prebooked row 26 to get two seats on their
own at the back of the A310 aircraft which was slightly more comfortable
,but there were about 25 spare seats on the plane anyway so we could
have been ok elsewhere. Seat pitch was a bit tight but seats themselves
OK. Breakfast was meatless-no Canadian bacon! and scrambled egg
appalling . Cabin service however was polite and attentive throughout.
Return trip arrived MAN 30mins early and meal was significantly
improved-quite tasty in fact. The flight booked seven months ago was an
excellent price so overall I would certainly fly Air Transat again.

October 2005
My wife and I flew Air Transat Glasgow-Toronto return during September.
We had the not unusual, problem of being a little over the hold baggage
allowance both outward and inward which for some reason was handled
differently at each check-in. At Glasgow the sensible approach was
adopted whereby, as we had less than 5kg hand baggage, the combined hold
and cabin allowances, which were less that the total 60kg permitted, was
accepted as ok - however in Toronto the attitude was different albeit
the same situation arose. The result was a charge of 63 canadian dollars
for being 9Kg overweight on hold baggage with no consideration given to
being 11Kg under weight on cabin baggage. No amount of discussion, with
rather rude staff, could alter the fact that the baggage was all going
on the same aircraft and the combined weight should be the basis on
which over-weight should be calculated. One other word of warning - Air
Transat do not accept 100 dollar bills inflight although I could find no
mention of that in my booking documents. In summary a combination of
inconsistency, rude staff in Toronto and rather sullen cabin crew would
make it difficult to use them in the future.

Toronto-Glasgow, Scotland-Toronto route. Fare was very reasonably
priced and as a result we did expect to have to make some sacrifice on
comfort. We flew economy and found the flight to be extremely pleasant.
The inflight entertainment was good (2 movies both ways, plus episodes
of Just for Laughs and Everybody Loves Raymond). Plane felt very new
(Air Bus) and was spotlessly clean. Seats were tight and there was very
little leg room, but if you're tall, take an aisle seat, my kids were
fine. The seating was leather which did make it feel/look nice. My
kids were both given pocket video games shortly after boarding the plane
and a kids flight book where you could get the captains signature, do
some colouring, etc. and there was also a place to fill in your name and
address and Air Transat will send your kids a post card and a birthday
card which actually did arrive (very impressed). The cabin crew was
pleasant helpful - food was adequate, not spectacular, but we got a
pasta type meal and then a sandwich type snack, both were good and at
the right temperature. Arrival times were early both ways and
everything ran seemlessly.

LGW-Calgary and Vancouver-LGW economy in August. Lots of niggles but the real problem
was the seat pitch which was terrible. I'm 6' 2" but this was the worst I have ever encountered on a
transatlantic economy flight. My knees were right up against the seat in front and the whole flight
was a nightmare. Couldn't wait to get off at GTW but we had to wait absolutely ages for the steps to
arrive at the stand followed by an interminable bus ride round the airport to arrivals, and
seemingly interminable wait for the luggage to arrive. I'm all for saving money but this is economy
too far. The flights really clouded what was otherwise a brilliant holiday. Never again with this
airline.

Flew Air Transat in August to Toulouse, France via Montreal both ways. The service was great and the
flight was uneventful. Seeing as I paid about much.
I am a frequent flyer as well as an airline attendant, so I have sampled many airline meals in my
day. In my opinion, one cant expect too much from the food unless you're flying CLUB CLASS on
Air Transat. I ordered the poached salmon and it was divine! The presentation is immaculate and the
service impeccable, you have two dedicated cabin attendants throughout the entire flight.
In response to other reviews about cramped seating, and poor food quality, you get what you pay
for!! I recommend upgrading to Club Class or dish out double the money and fly a regular schedule
carrier.

GLA - Calgary, Vancover - GLA on an A330, we travelled club class &
after reading reviews, with some trepidation. However both flights were
excellent : more than adequate leg room even although I'm
6ft 2in, reasonable film choice & most surprisingly excellent service!
They now claim to have a dedicated "director" for the club area & they
did indeed look after us on a par with some business class services. The
food was also surprisingly good & they were even able to furnish me with
a gluten & dairy free meal.

Dublin to Toronto return. This would be a poor airline, except for the brilliant
prices (same flight for half the cost of Air Canada). You get what you pay for! Food
is okay, but nothing amazing - I would certainly recommend eating before departure.
Otherwise, there's two movies shown on each flight, and the headphones sockets take
standard stereo. The airline will sell you headphones or you can use your own.
Emergency exit seating is near impossible to get. I checked in at Toronto just over
four hours before my flight, and those rows had already gone (you can't book them in
advance). There are a few rows at the rear of the plane (25-32) were there is only
two seats rather than three on each side, which is a slight improvement. Seats are
quite narrow, but the real killer is the lack of legroom. Anyone over 5'10" should
take an aisle seat for the little extra legroom that allows.

We flew Munich-YVR-Munich in July. No problem at all with check-in, in-flight
services, luggage or arrival times. But I would add that the economy seating was
extremely cramped - I am 170cm, there was no leg room, narrow seats, brutal when the
passenger in front reclined his seat back. Can't say that I would do a long flight
with Air Transat again - seating just too uncomfortable!

YYZ-CUN-YYZ, A310. Economy Class. Extremely tight space between rows, forget about
the incline angle. Food is horrible, on our way down to Cancun, we were offered
Chicken Quesadillas, Doritos Chips. And a pre-landing ice cream. the Quesadillas and
Chips is way too small for an 11:20 departure flight, I was expecting a hot meal. The
pre-landing ice cream was a very nice touch. On our way back, we had Pasta Salad,
Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich w/ Smokey mustard sauce, and Butterscotch Chocolate
Chip Blondie. The sandwich was too dry, the Pasta Salad turned out to be the
best in the meal. Finally, let's talk about the crew, the outbound crew were ok,
poker face all the way to sunny Cancun. The return crew were smiling, but they are
busy talking about their party in Cancun the night before. Extremely unprofessional.
I am an AC frequently flyer, never felt AC that great before I flew with Air Transat.
I'll have to stick with AC then.

Calgary - Manchester service used this week for return trip to Alberta. A330 plane
was cramped full, but crew helpful. Fascinating route over Greenland. Eastbound
flight was less satisfactory. Departing Calgary at 2300DMT and arriving at 1410BST
75% of flight was in daylight. Responding to crew request to lower blinds we missed
much of a glorious dawn over Hudson Bay. Being stuck (literally) in a claustrophobic
blacked out plane for so long, when passengers unable to sleep in anything but total
darkness could be offered blindfolds as with other airlines, was most unpleasant.

I used Air Transat twice to get to Toronto, the food was not fantastic but wasn't too
bothered about that. The flights were on time and cabin crew were fairly friendly, the cost of

NCL-YYZ-NCL and cannot rate them higher. Were in economy going
and had the best seats (25J/K, on an A310), leather seats and ample legroom. Plane
was clean and quiet and the flight left early. Inbound, we travelled in Club Class

arline over any other if you are going over the Atlantic and want a cheap flight.

Brussels-Montreal-Brussels in Club Class. Aircraft was Airbus A310 with 21 seats in
Club Class. Pitch was more or less like economy. Seat not very comfortable but I was
lucky that I got 2D, which gave me some more space as there was no seat in front of
me. Departure was nearly on time. Cabin Crew very friendly and professional. They
served a hot breakfast (not a very good quality) and before landing a small snack.
Return flight was on time and very short (6 1/2 hours). Once again, very friendly
cabin crew. The choice of food was ok but again the quality was not the best. First
time I flew with Air Transat, given that it is the only airline which does fly non-
stop from Brussels to Montreal. If you are looking and expecting a real business
class than you should better fly with another carrier - but this will cost you at
least 2-3 times more. So after all, a good product and service for the money, but I
think you can save the costs for an upgrade to Club Class - as it does not provide a
great additional value.

I am a "frequent flyer" of TS! Just returned from LGW yesterday and I can't say how
great the service and attentiveness of the staff was! They never disappoint! I've
seen and read all the comments posted here and i just have to say this: You book
with a charter air company - that's what they are - so expect flight delays, limited
baggage allowance, and tight seat pitch!! (I guess some people fail to read the terms

price - why complain! Be happy that AT is around serving Canadians proud!!

Exeter to Toronto. I booked the seats before departure and was a really good
investment as I picked the two window seats at the rear of the aircraft which are
actually a lot wider than the rows that have three in them (I tried sitting in the
rows with 3 in them and there is a noticable difference). You will also be closer to
the toilets as queues are likely. Although if you don't have good sight you may not
be able to see the tv's. But leg room isn't fantastic. The food is edible, although
goodness knows what it is, as they don't tell you, but that's probably a good thing.
The inflight entertainment is okay - a little disjointed. The flights were all on
time and the flight attendents were ok. The return flights were okay again and even a
little early. but at the end of the day it is great value for money and alot less
hassel if you live in the southwest going up to London. and if I ever consider going
on holiday to canada again I would consider using Air Transat.

We travelled Gatwick to Toronto on 4th June and upgraded to Club Transat. We had roomy seats, a
choice of meals served restaurant style course by course, choice of wine and coffess and liqeuers.
With a baggage allowance of 40 kilos each it didn't matter that we had to buy another suitcase in
Toronto to bring all our purchases home. With priority baggage handling we were out of Toronto
Airport 25 minutes after landing. The flight home was just as good. I would say that if you can
afford it it is well worth the extra money to upgrade. It was still cheaper to do that than fly
economy on both British Airways and Air Canada.

After waiting all day in Vancouver our flight was changed to the next day - "pilot was sick". Even
the attendants didn't believe it. The vouchers for meals did not come close to covering any meals at
the hotel provided. Not enough time given to change hotel arrangements in Amsterdam - 250$ down the
drain. On the way back from Amsterdam, the plane was again delayed 24 hours; I discovered this from
the website. I tried 6 numbers provided by the company to confirm this with a real person - no
success. One extra night in a hotel.

I found AirTransat to be a good airline who seemed to have everything under control. Flying
Glasgow - Toronto and back two weeks after 11-25 June, every aspect of our flight was excellent from
the quick check-in to good pre-boarding and the flights themselves. Contray to some other opinions,
I found the cabin crew friendly and chatty and the information supplied was good. The food is
airline food after all and the movies are what you get, but again I'd advise sitting in the rear 7
rows of the plane, where the 2 seats are at the window. Good leg room here looked a bit more
squashed in the middle. But for me at 6'2, it was no worse than a certain high-speed train on the
West Coast Rail line. A well organised airline, who will certainly be seeing my money again the next
time I travel to Ontario.
