I am flying with Swiss for over 2 decades, but their service recently has gone down so drastically that I will not fly with them anymore. On 11th May my wife and myself were flying BOM-ZRH-AMS sector. Bombay-Zurich sector flight was a nightmare due to very bad FA service. A gentleman who was serving was outright rude and does not have proper manner to talk to customers! Below par breakfast coupled with near racist behavior appalled us. Zurich-Amsterdam sector was fine, but the bad taste which we got previously could not be forgotten in a hurry.

Dublin - Zurich - Vienna return Business. I second the opinion of D Houlihan, in that the Dublin legs of my journey were far superior than the Vienna legs. Staff were courteous and professional and drinks were flowing! The Vienna leg made me wonder why I bothered flying Business, mainly due to the fact that the service and level of attention I had come to expect from my previous flight was not there. Lounge in Zurich soulless, but pleasant.

Dublin-Zurich-Florence return in Business class. All flights were on time. On all sectors staff were friendly and professionals. Food was good and drinks flowed freely, the Florence sector though did miss that extra touch that got on the DUB legs, chocolates given were economy, less drinks and crew seemed very rushed. Over all though a good experience, the lounges in Zurich are spot on - the lounge in Dublin and Florence were not great and felt the walls closing in on us after a short while.

Zurich-London Heathrow, A320, Economy Class. Excellent service onboard, snack and swiss chocolate served, as well as drinks. Duty free also offered in this 1.5 hr flight. Seats comfortable, but slightly cramped. Flight attendants are courteous, and would fly with them again. I recommend this airline.

BSL-PRG-BSL, RJ100, C Class. Web check-in worked perfectly. There's a new fast track in Basel which at busy times of the day is a vast improvement on the previous one lane set-up. Lounge good, staff excellent. Some of the gate staff (Swissport) very rude. Outward flight very good service. Cold meal as usual but of a higher standard than usual. Warm Champagne, as ever. Return web check wouldn’t give my daughter and I two seats together. This was sorted out at a check-in desk at the airport. New fast-track at PRG too which, considering the massive queues at the normal security lines, was a welcome surprise. Crystal Lounge was filthy – no change there – pathetic choice of drinks, no food, uncomfortable seats. Flight to BSL was par for the course. Excellent FA’s do their best with sub-standard F&B and equipment (Duty Free credit card machine didn’t work again!) An unexpected twist : there was a dog loose in the cabin which is against company regulations but was tolerated as the alternative - being enclosed in its carry-bag - sent it into a deranged frenzy! The Purser did his best to stop the continual scratching under our seats and also the occasional visit in-between the seat backs but he couldn’t do much to stop it. The overall European C class experience is slightly better than Y class but there’s very little to choose between them so, if one does not have a FF card, a Priority Pass lounge entrance to SWISS lounges, which costs about €25 per visit, combined with a Y ticket, could be an acceptable alternative for short flights. After reading recent reports (here) about SWISS keeping the middle C seat free on their 3+3 layout (A319-320-321), please be advised that these seats are not kept free although they are the last to be sold, so a free middle seat is a lucky bonus but is not guaranteed. RJ100’s are 5 abreast in both classes. These things, together with one or two other short-comings in C class, makes it difficult to tick the “value for money” box. I can, however, recommend most other aspects of the product.

MAN-ZRH-JNB return. Impressive levels of service from most pleasant and efficient crew with good food for Business Class. On-time flights in a clean cabin with a satisfactory, if a bit fiddly, on-demand IFE system. A very reasonable fare, less than 50% of what I was quoted for BA on the same date. The only drawback in the A-340 is the somewhat uncomfortable seat, on which a necessary skill is to stop yourself sliding inexorably down into the footwell. In fairness to Swiss, better flat seats are scheduled soon though the crew told me it was a 2-yr roll-out programme. Very good value overall, notwithstanding this aspect.

LHR-ZRH-BOM in business. Checkin was smooth at Heathrow but at 5am on a Sunday you're rarely troubled. Lounge access in the Lufthansa Heathrow lounge as ever was poor. As a Star Alliance gold card holder on business I should be in the higher lounge of the two but was refused for the second time by a very distant door woman. The short haul flight was comfortable and fairly empty. The long haul fine, nothing special. Seats are not lie flat and the entertainment not on demand, but there's a reasonable choice. Drinks service was very slow to start but once going they took care of us quite well. It was the lower cost option so good value but a higher price would have been too much.

London-Zurich-Barcelona return Business Class. Service is attentive and faultless in almost all aspects. However, cost cuts are visible to the product the airline offers. Food in lounges is poor with cheap "snacks" on offer, in some lounges a hot dish, but no range nor quality to what is on offer. Onboard the portions are small and on all but on the first sector, the food was a cold meal with no options. Seating is that of economy with the middle seats empty; it's comfortable and it is nice not having a passenger in seats B or E. Overall, it is not worth paying extra money for to travel Swiss Business. I was able to upgrade for an extra 30% on the price of an Economy ticket. Any more expensive, and it would not have been worth it. Swiss Economy would have been sufficient for a comfortable journey, as Swiss Business (Europe) does not have much more to offer.

London Heathrow to Barcelona via Zurich, returning via Zurich to London City. All flights in business class and were good. Food acceptable considering the flight times. Centre seat on Airbus kept clear, though I had the impression the RJ100 to LCY was 5 abreast in business and economy - fortunately few business passengers and we had a row each. Downside of RJ100 flights to City - no jetbridge at Zurich ever used.

Ref H Severin's comment about SWISS leaving the middle seat free in European C class - they only do this if they can't sell these seats. They have had a policy in place for at least the last 2 years, where all seats are sold if possible and have removed all references to "keeping the middle seat free" from their web site. For quite a time, SWISS advertised the fact that they, like LH and other European schedule airlines, kept the middle seat in C class free, whilst at the same time selling as many of these seats as possible. Onboard complaints could be met with "either accept it, or be off-loaded". The only way to guarantee that the double, triple or quadruple fare you have paid in order to have more personal space, is to fly another airline as you are not guaranteed extra space on SWISS.
