SYD to JNB Premium Economy. Unlike some premium economy, there is no lounge access with
Qantas. Onboard, I found the seat uncomfortable and hard although the leg room was good.
Recline slightly better than economy. The food was OK - two main meals both with 2 choices.
Desserts a real disappointment. Amenity pack is a waste of time - why do airlines bother with
this if they are going to give rubbish that no one wants. In flight entertainment had big
selection but as with previous flights required a reboot after takeoff so was not available
for an hour or so. If you fly business on long haul, the premium economy is a disappointment.
For a long flight like this (13.5 hours) it is worth the extra to go business - especially for
overnight flights. Day flights are tolerable.

SYD-JFK, LAX-SYD Outbound on 747 which was clean. Flights all full but attentive service on
all sectors. Regular runs through the cabin with drinks. AVOD worked well. Inbound on A380
which was beautiful to fly. Quiet, comfortable and crew seemed to enjoy working on their new
aircraft. Self-serve galley at rear of economy was great. Entertainment system very good, but
did make the 747's seem somewhat ordinary.

BNE-SYD-PVG-SYD-BNE Y class for domestic and J class for international - trips are pretty
average. No outstanding service, staff not interested. PVG-SYD trip was in particular bad,
and also treated people differently in similar situations. Business class food was pretty
average, nothing special.

Flew back business class on Qantas with my daughter from Sydney to London, and although we
were told we were sitting upstairs, we ended up downstairs. About 13-20 times during the
overnight flight the stewards from first class opened the overhead lockers above us to take
out blankets and duvets for the first class cabin or put them back. Obviously difficult to
sleep and extremely distracting. To say nothing of the fact that we had nowhere to store our
own luggage. As this was a BA codeshare I was lumped with them, I decided to keep an open mind
- but imagine my joy at being told I had to put up with the noise because they didn't want to
disturb the first class passengers.

Economy Auckland - Sydney. Plane half empty but service was great in economy. Meals were
served within 10 minutes of seat belt sign off, every 10 minutes staff through to see if you
wanted anything else. Only downside is that the entertainment system is showing its age just a
couple of screen in the economy cabin with the same movie

PVG-BNE / MEL-PVG was good. Economy on A330-200. Bit too warm on the PVG-SYD sectors, but
otherwise was okay. Apparently I missed the SYD-BNE by 10 minutes, even though their clock
said I was early 10 minutes. Got upgraded (a surprise) to business class on the MEL-PVG.
Excellent everything.

SIN-MEL. I am 194cm and learnt a lesson in shoe-horning my legs under the seat in front of me,
and in patience. True, I could have paid extra for an exit row seat, but that would have meant
an extra 15% or so on my fare, that's if an exit row seat were available. The 31" seat pitch
is the deal breaker with Qantas for me - there are other, and better, choices for leg room.
Having said that, there were many good aspects about this very full flight - the cabin crew
were exemplary - friendly, cheerful, making frequent runs through the cabin, always quick to
respond - fabulous service. I also liked the courteous and assertive way they asked pax to
put their seat backs upright for meal service - not everyone does. Dinner was fine, fruit
during the night was bananas (a first for me - it's always been apples), the miniscule
breakfast was a surprise, but probably reasonable - it's only a 7 hour flight. IFE worked just fine.

LAX-SYD A380. The premium economy product is worth the extra money. Nice touches of champagne
on boarding, meals on china and table cloth, although meals somewhat small. Cabin crew
wonderful - seemed to enjoy their job. A380 Premium economy upstairs and is quiet. The extra
legroom is a plus and makes sleep much easier. Entertainment system excellent. Only gripe
would be that your luggage does not receive a priority sticker and took ages to come off the aircraft.

LHR-SYD-LHR Business class. Excellent value at a shade under £2000 booked when airlines were
at their most price-aggressive. Out on 747 with angled bed. Cabin crew were attentive and
there seemed to be more per passenger than other long-haul business class carriers. Dinner was
as close as I have ever seen to restaurant-style dining given the constraints of an aircraft.
Lounge at SYD was good - less food & drink variety than BA lounges but better quality. Return
on A380 - first experience of this. Good initial impression but after take-off the only
noticeable difference to being on the lower deck of a 747 was the flat seat. Pod proved to be
narrow for sleeping and overall not as relaxing as I had expected, but same excellent food &
service.

SYD-MEL business class, a particularly underwhelming experience. The business class cabin on
board the 767 was full, the result of passengers transferred from an earlier cancelled flight.
The attendants seemed to have very little interest in making us welcome. When the meal service
came through, those at the rear of the business class cabin were left with only one meal
option - the flight attendant told me this was a result of the sector being under-catered. No
apology was given. Is it worth paying $600+ for the sector? Not on your life!

LHR-MEL via HKG on B747-400 premium economy. Boarding on time and efficient. Very good
service and quality of food outstanding for economy. While cabin was full, the extra leg room
and extra staff make this rather long journey more tolerable. No delays. Quite impressed and
would fly again in this class, if price is competitive.

MEL-SYD on 737-800. Good service. Seating feels a little old but comfortable. Nice chicken
and corn soup as a main but the chocolate mint cake was way too sweet. Original booked flight
cancelled at short notice by airline.

Business class SYD-PER 767-300ER. Boarding chaotic regardless of class. Cabin staff are not
going to break out in star jumps or tell Dad jokes and they don't pretend to be any different.
The planes are getting on. Staff professional, food excellent. Will fly again if cost
competitive and an upgrade is available.

MEL-CNS-SYD, slight delays on both ends. Service was excellent aboard, a quick flight
duration but a full meal was served. Food tasty. Vegetarian meals good. Portions were
small, but who can complain with a meal served on this short of a route? The airfare was the
same as Virgin Blue, but meals and baggage were included. One negative: we could not reserve
seats ahead of time and were separated on our outbound.

SYD-HKG on A330. My partner and I used QFF points and were upgraded to Business on our recent
trip. The express ticket through Customs was a positive. Onboard the staff were very friendly
and helpful (probably helped by the cabin being half full). Although once into the flight the
staff seemed to disappear. We asked for a tea and a sandwich and it seamed like the greatest
inconvenience in the world for the FA. The seats are fantastic, and I found them most
comfortable in the almost flat position. Overall I would not pay for business on a QF day
flight as Premium economy offers basically the same food without a lie flat seat.

Cabin Flown: | Economy |
SYD-SIN A380 - an evolution rather than a revolution but for economy, a good step forward (or
probably more correctly, reclaiming what economy was like 25 years ago). Seats a bit wider,
reclining with a "cradle" action that gives you a bit more knee room; the IFE box is thinner,
regaining the foot space lost when IFE was introduced on 747s. Meals and service were top
class for economy, with the snack stations containing drinks, fresh fruit and biscuits a nice
extra for economy on Qantas. IFE is one area of revolution - a generation beyond anything I
have seen in economy before including ability to watch takeoff from camera mounted in tail.
Overall, whilst economy is still economy, it will be hard to go back to a 747 once you have
experienced an A380 flight.
