Oasis Hong Kong Airlines review - by R Kuhn
10 August 2007 Customer Trip Rating :
Goodish value for the money (I didn't get the HK1000 fare). Full flight left on time. Entertainment
was OK, just a couple of older movies. Crew attentive and drinks came regularly. Food was a bit
dreadful (and this coming from someone who likes airline food). Arrived in HK on time. Big bonus
points for Oasis for retrieving my lost luggage in London, that had missed an Easyjet connection and
delivered it to my door in HK. Overall, not a bad airline for the price, just don't expect too much.

Good value for money. Less than £300 return. Both flights on time. Food
ok and free tea, coffee and water. Attentive staff. It is budget and it
feels it but just can't complain for the price!

Gatwick-HKG return. Fast and efficient Business Class check-in with
priority tag on luggage. When I enquired about ‘fast-track’, the lady
told me it is not open! Do ask if you can use fast-track as Gatwick gets
busy that time in the evening. Lounge in Gatwick very basic, no calling
system so just look at the board for boarding. Warm and smiley welcome
at the door, comfortable seat was wide and ok to get some sleep. Food
pleasant. The most outstanding feature was the service. On my return
flight, I checked in at the new beautiful T2 in Hong Kong airport, with
efficient and polite check-in staff. The lounge was much better in
comparison to the one in Gatwick, lots of snacks and drinks. Boarding
was smooth, separate entrance for Business Class passengers, much better
organised than in London. Food better on this journey, again, no delay
and we arrived 30 mins early. On both journeys, the business class
sections were half empty, toilets very clean, no Molton Brown soap or
flowers in the toilets but I don’t think anyone cares!

Got student offer on return ticket priced at HKD1000 HKG-LGW-HKG in Y
class. Cabin crew impressive and happy in serving passengers. The meals
are slightly below average and small portions on both legs, though you
got hot meals. Mineral water runs frequent and other food and beverage
were at market price of London. The seat is above average, but some
channels of PTV were out of order.

14 June 2007 Customer Trip Rating :
I flew to LGW and back to Hong kong. Both flights were pretty on time
with delay within half an hour. Good service from the crew and water is
easily accessible from the crew. Mind though, it may be a bit cool
during the "sleeping time". Take more clothes if necessary. In addition,
some video channels may not be working properly as stated, but it is
some how a minor problem for such low cost.

Flew out to Honk Kong, flight left on time with no hitches. Hot meal
served shortly after takeoff. Watched a couple of films, both about six
months old. Breakfast served about two hours before touchdown. Flight
crew attentive and helpful. Water was freely available and most soft
drinks etc were priced at £1 each. Flew back to Gatwick this morning
(28th), flight left on time again. A light meal served around 2am in the
morning. Headset connector was faulty so read and slept for most of the
flight. A good breakfast was served two hours before touchdown. Oasis
are on to a winner here, cheap flights, good service.

LGW-HKG return. Had purchased their 'buy one get one free' offer in
Business Class so, for a little over £900 each inc taxes, my wife and I
were in the front cabin. Seating comfortable - cradles, not lie-flats,
but these would have been first class seats less than 10 years ago. Even
now, they are wider, and the seat pitch much more generous, than
Emirates equivalent. I use that comparison as, a month previously, I
made a LGW-DXB-HKG return trip with Emirates and that ticket cost £1450
inc taxes. It has to be said that Oasis's cuisine will never win prizes,
but it was tasty, plentiful and well served. The same can be said for
the wine. Soft drinks offered on several occasions through both flights
and alcoholic drinks available on request. Service attentive and
friendly - if anything the cabin seemed slightly over-staffed. Overall,
a positive experience and excellent value for money.

17 May 2007 Customer Trip Rating :
Have just completed two more Oasis flights LGW-HKG a month ago, and
return last night. I travelled out on its second service last year so
was interested to see what had happened for better or worse. Check in
at LGW was quick & efficient but still no interline agreement with other
airlines in Hong Kong seems short sighted as regards transit of luggage
or boarding passes. This caused major problems on my first trip so had
allowed extra time as one has to go through immigration and then collect
luggage and re-check in with other airline. But this aside, the flight
was nearly full, and departed a few minutes early. Seating was no
change and seemed little change to the films available. Quality of the
IFE is beginning to show its age and needs some attention as the flights
are long. Outbound it all worked fine but poor sound quality even with
my own noise cancelling headphones but it at least worked because on the
last nights return leg about half the films were not available because
of technical problems, not ideal on a 12 hour+ flight. Food outbound
was good, service from the FA's attentive and overall made the long
flight pleasant. Flight landed a little early. The change-over in HK
went smoothly but they must get this sorted out for passenger
convenience. Return flight, we checked in at Kowloon, which was
deserted, why?, it makes life so much more pleasant not to take the
luggage on the Airport Express and avoids the long check-in queues at
the beautiful new Terminal 2 at HK. What a sensational building, with
only two small airline users using this massive light, terminal with a
superb selection of shops etc., which do seem to not stay open too late,
which is unfortunate as Oasis departs after midnight. The fact of the
aircraft gate still being in T1 does not present a problem, but seeing
the departure board in T2 saying gate 35, we took the train in 2 hops to
gate 35 only to find it was now gate 15, not too helpful. The boarding
scrum experienced on our first experience last November, hasn't
improved, although the ground staff at least tried to board from the
back by seat rows, but to little avail, Asians seem not to like to
queue. This needs organising to avoid the pushing and shoving at the
gate and chaos inside the aircraft with luggage and overhead lockers etc
and trying to find the seat. Departure was a few minutes late, with an
almost full aircraft. The service from the FAs was acceptable, but the
food was very poor. A half cold fish burger in a dry plain bun as a
main meal was not exactly inspiring, certainly not as good as previous
flights. The second meal, the breakfast was better, and hot. The
flight itself was turbulent most of the way so sleep was nearly
impossible and not helped by the continual loud announcements about seat
belts as their signs were going on and off most of the flight. Plane
landed dead on time, but ground staff at LGW seemed to take for ever to
unload the luggage and sort out which carousel was to be used. Overall
another pleasant couple of flights with Oasis, and in terms of value for
money, very good.

20 April 2007 Customer Trip Rating :
My wife and I travelled business class with Oasis on 3rd March,
returning on 18th March. Prior to travelling I had seen various reviews
of the service which were generally good with the majority saying "it
is good for the price", or "it is no frills but what can you expect"
We have come to the conclusion that this airline is good - not because
it is low cost, but because it is good. The service on board was at
least equal to that which I have received on occasions in business
class on BA, attentive staff who addressed you by name and customer
focused. The seats were comfortable - they are not flat bed but enable
you to sleep in comfort, and both flights took off on time. Whilst the
lounge facilities provided at Gatwick were not the best I have
experienced, they were welcome especially as we were not expecting them
to be available. On the other hand the lounge facilities in Hong Kong
were superb - we worked it out that with what was available you could
have what amounted to a three course meal, and with plentiful liquid
refreshment we wanted for nothing. We cannot understand how one person
on this site did not think that they were good. An excellent service for
an affordable price.

LGW-HKG return, the price was quite good and easy to book online
although. Online check-in is very useful. The problem was the delays on
both flights: LGW to HK: 5 hours delay and HK to LGW: 4 hours delay, so
could be a problem if you have connections or restricted times.

24 March 2007
Very impressed with this airline. My flight from London to HK was
cancelled. Contacted them and was offered a flight the night before or
night after without any problems. The flight out to HK was on time. Food
and drink was provided and was of a good quality. Return flight was
delayed by 3 hours due to aircraft maintenance. Same service on the way
back. Food & drink provided. The crew dont harass you when you are
trying to sleep. Movies available if you dont want to sleep.
Other budget airlines should take note of this approach. I would use
this airline again for sure.

LGW-HKG return with my wife and daughter. Both flights were a pleasant

will be flying again later this year - I would recommend Oasis.

27 February 2007
LGW-HKG return. Considering the price we paid, I was not expecting a
lot in economy class. My wife is pregnant and ground and onboard teams
were extremely accomodating to ensure she was comfortable. The flight
to HKG was only half full. On the flight back from HKG, we were
allocated our own row in the front so we got a good 9 hours sleep. Leg
room was generous though I am only 5'5. Food was good. Service was
very good. Water brought around every half hour or so. Overall I was
pleasantly suprised with Oasis and would fly with them again if the
service stays the same. My only concern is will they be able to survive
flying B744 half full? Most airlines need 70% to break even.

LGW-HKG. Very impressed with the flight. I thought legroom was good,
Food wasn't bad, and cabin crew organised and helpful. All of this for
£165 one way to Hong Kong. You get what you pay for and more!

Gatwick to Hong Kong. Quick and efficient check in, dep on time. Food
was ok. Even being offered the option of paying for an upgrade if I
wished. No inflight magazine but who cares. Business class at £1099.
Nothing to complain about.

8 February 2007
Oasis is a new low cost carrier that offers both business and coach
service. One flight daily from Hong Kong to Gatwick. Overnight flights
in both directions. I went to book at the last minute on the internet
and found I couldn't book flights less than two days ahead. the site
referred me to a phone number. I called, booked the flight for same
night with no problems. Check in for the 1:30 am doesn't open until
11:00pm. No line at all for check in. Oasis uses the CNAC lounge.
Lounge is fine but undistinguished. No food to speak of. Business is in
the front - 2x3x2- and upstairs at 2x2. Power adjustable backs, foot
rests, back support. Recline is nearly like the old American or United
seats. A DC power plug but I didn't check to see if it was working.
Entertainment usual armrest fold out screens. Amenity kit minimal. A
flight attendant came around and offered a basket of eye shades and a
basket of socks. Cabin service was attentive and friendly. The dinner
was edible but closer to a coach meal than to business class. Overall I
found Oasis to have a solid service and I'll use them again. Pros are a
comfortable business class seat at a great price with attentive,
friendly, no hassle service. Cons are a lack of frills in terms of
amenities, lounge, and food. This is business class, definitely not
first. There's no frequent flier program and, even if they had one, it
would be difficult to rack up enough miles unless you have a London Hong
Kong regular commute.

Gatwick to Hong Kong. Flight was on time. I was positively surprised as
the crew seemed very friendly and interested in making you feel
comfortable. The flight was very pleasant and a lot was done to make it
possible for everyone to catch some sleep. The food was ok and
sufficiently supplied with drinks through the flight. The entertainment
might be "so-so", but didn't bother me too much. I think it's nice that
there's just something, so whether it's the newest of the newest is less
important. For the price of £160 incl. taxes I have to say this is a
bargain compared to what you get! I was so pleased I ordered my return
journey with Oasis as soon as I got internet access in Hong Kong.

I travelled to Hong Kong return - a brilliant fight both ways and on
time. The flight was only approx half full each way which was good if
you wanted to sleep - I noticed that a lot of customers once airborne
moved round to obtain 3 seats to enable them to sleep. The food was good
with two meals and staff came round offering water at intervals
throughout the flight. I was very impressed with the airline and with
the cost of only £260 return a bargain. I also booked my seats on line
a few days before travel at no extra cost. Well done Oasis. I would fly
Oasis Hong Kong again.

26 January 2007
Business class HKG to Gatwick one way. Due to a mechanical problem the
flight which was originally due to depart at 1.30am was delayed 10hrs.
This meant that overnight accommodation had to be arranged. We were
notified by email and text but there was no offer of a hotel room so we
made our own arrangements. The flight was delayed a further hour from
the new time. We were given a pass to the CNAC business lounge which was
comfortable, snacks and sandwiches available together with juices,
coffee etc. Business class check in was slow as the clerk was not at the
desk when we arrived. We sat on the front seats in what would have been
the old First Class and the amount of room in front of us was amazing -
seats ok and could be reclined back, not flat of course but for the
price we paid they were fine. Unfortunately the light would not work
above my seat so I had to move to another. Both sets of head phones only
worked on 1 channel and had to be changed. The inflight films were fine
choice of 12+ but were not interactive so you had to catch them at the
beginning or wait until they came round again. We were served a hot meal
at the start of the flight and second meal was not served until 1.5hrs
before landing. This would have been OK on a night flight as most people
are asleep but this was a delayed flight so a day flight. After 3-4hrs
we asked if there was anything to eat and were offered pot noodles.
Oasis had obviously not considered that extra meals are required on a
day flight. Cabin staff were helpful and regularly brought water or
other drinks, although they did seem a little inexperienced. Obviously
with only 2 planes delays will occur if there are technical faults as no
back up.

Flew LGW-HKG on 25 December 2006 and returned HKG-LGW on 3 January 2007,
the latter representing the airline's 100th flight. Business class in
each direction. Both flights on time. Easy check in at LGW on Christmas
Day and on return used check in at Kowloon Airport Express Station. I
don't know why this facility is not more used as it makes life a lot
easier when reaching the airport. No lounge access on outward flight but
that is probably because all the business lounges were closed at LGW on
25 December. Given access to CNAC lounge at HKG on return with excellent
catering facilities. Extremely comfortable business cabin with vast
amounts of space (a bit more planning could have incorporated a few more
seats without any loss of pitch or increased the available recline
angle). Why on earth do all these seat controls have to be on the inside
of the armrest? For a larger person, it is very easy to knock them
accidentally and they are just so difficult to reach and see. Very
pleasant cabin staff who made a point of calling me by name on the
outward flight. 2 reasonable meals in each direction served on porcelain
but I doubt the contents were any different to economy. Free drinks as
required. No pack of goodies but on the outward flight, toothbrushes,
eye masks and earplugs were in a help yourself pile. Nothing instantly
available on homeward flight but I dare say would have been if
requested. You have to accept this is a budget business class and a
budget airline. There is no in flight magazine and no sale of plastic
aeroplanes or perfumes etc. Overall I felt that the cabin crew, although
pleasant throughout, were somewhat inexperienced. Although everything
was available if requested, they didn't go round offering much. I think
here of water and soft drinks which most airlines bring round on trays
at regular intervals on long flights. Cabin crew have a fairly easy if
boring job as flights are overnight in both directions so most of their
time is spent in the galley or resting. I paid only £1051 return
including all taxes and looking at the major airlines' economy pricing
this is indeed a bargain. I would not normally travel business class but
at this pricing I could not resist it. If you're used to BA ClubWorld
then you would definitely be going down market but for what you pay, it
is superb value. As regards business class only, in short, if you are
paying for your own ticket then do use Oasis; if someone else is buying
the ticket then stick with the major airlines at present. If however you
would normally travel economy on another airline then pay the extra and
enjoy all that Oasis Business has to offer.

LGW - HKG economy. Check in: very quick! Departure on time. Economy was
full but the seats were pretty standard, nothing special. Leg room is
about the same of normal economy. The only complimentary things were
headphones, blanket, pillow, water and 2 meals. Soft drinks are £1 and
pot noodles are also £1 or HK$15. Excellent value for the money paid. No
real difference to CX/BA/VS if you're not fussy about drinks and snacks.

15 December 2006
HKG to London Gatwick economy class. I transferred from Taipei so did
not check in at the normal counters but at the transfer counter, which
went smoothly. We boarded on time but upon boarding I was informed that
the IFE system in the section I was sitting in was broken, so they
switched me to another seat. When I boarded the plane I found out they
had seated me in a seat with a broken reading light. Upon take-off, I
asked the stewardess to be reassigned to another seat since I had
brought aboard several magazines, which she promptly did as the flight
was only about 75% full. The planes used by Oasis Air were bought
second-hand from Singapore Air, but I did not realize that the second
hand interior came with it, as well as the older inflight entertainment.
The seats were spacious and comfortable and the behind-seat monitors
performed as designed; just don’t expect the economy class interior will
be new since it is a new airline - it is a bit worn (business class
seats were new however). Food served was two adequate meals. I cannot
comment on the taste since everybody's palate is different, though meals
were nice and hot. Cabin crew were pleasant, helpful, and seemed
genuinely happy to respond to requests. In terms of IFE, there are
movies and shows running continuously throughout the trip. The IFE
system is the older version where you can change channels, but no movies
on demand, play/pause function, etc. Take off and landing times were
also extremely punctual; we even arrived a few minutes ahead of
schedule. Gatwick to HKG : same positive experience as above, except
that the IFE seemed to be working in all sections during the flight.
Don't know if it was a different plane (there are only 2 in the fleet so
far) or if they got it fixed fro my last flight. Service beyond what I
expected for a budget airline, attentive with great attitude. Aside from
the dated interior and IFE system, Oasis Hong Kong Air was a pleasant
surprise. They also seemed to have worked out some of their earlier
scheduling bugs as both my flights were very punctual (or, I may had
just gotten lucky).

Pre-Xmas trip to HK. Travelled economy. Paid £261 each return and we
weren't sure what we would be getting for the money. Couldn't really
fault it - ok you won't get fat on the meals and inflight entertainment
wasn't the best but plenty of leg room and staff great. Flights both
ways were on schedule. Verdict - superb value for money. (I thought
they would be "pushing" the sale of beer/wine in the Economy cabin but I
had to ask for an alcoholic drink with dinner on the way out.)

15 December 2006
My wife and I have just completed a round trip to Hong Kong from Gatwick
with Oasis. We too suffered a cancellation of the return leg of our trip
but were given a couple of weeks notice so the change wasn't a huge
inconvenience. Check in at Gatwick was slick but was a little
disorganised and haphazard on the way back. Onboard, everything was of a
very satisfactory standard for the price. The entertainment system was
fine but movies on show all about 18 months old and the same on both
legs. One tip, economy passengers who want some extra leg room should
check in online 72 hours before and pre-select their seats in either
rows 36 or 46. I managed to do this with ease in each direction.
Alternatively, I was told you could book these seats anytime before this
for an extra £60. My big gripe, however, was the airline's policy on
special meals. They claim everyone on the flight is entitled to a
complimentary meal be it a 'Western' or an 'Asian' one. If for some
reason (be it religious, ethical, allergy or whatever) you require
something else - you will be charged an extra £6 each way. That smacks
of discrimination in my book but after some discussion with Oasis'
product manager, she wouldn't concede that there was anything wrong.
Despite this, I would recommend Oasis for anyone wanting an excellent
value trip to the Far East. I wouldn't have even considered going it if
it wasn't for their prices.

LGW to Hong Kong return. Check in at Gatwick swift and efficent. Even
being able to pick our seating and also being offered the option of
paying for an upgrade. Two good meals, ample leg room. The cabin crew
were attentive and pleasant. The same for the return trip. You get
delays with any airline, and I am sure Oasis will have their fair share,
but full marks to them for offering a budget alternative to the big
cartels.

Flew Oasis on the 21/11/06. 20 hours before our departure we were
informed our return flight on the 28/11/06 had been cancelled and we
could return a day early or a day later. We chose to return a day later
as we were only staying in Hong Kong a few days on a short vacation and
coming back a day early would have made the trip a waste of time. This
cancellation came as a great shock as we were on a tight budget and had
to find the money to rebook our return connecting flight to Belfast,
book an extra nights accomodation in Hong Kong and get in touch with our
travel insurers, a very stressful time. The flight to Hong Kong went
very well with two good meals and great service throughout by smiling
FAs, a far nicer experience than Qantas airlines. The return flight was
spoiled by the inflight entertainment not working in our section of the
aircraft and on a 13 hour flight is important enough, but as on the out
bound flight the service was very good. So to sum it all up, if you
don't mind flight cancellations at short notice and have plenty of money
to cover expenses because of this then Oasis could be the one for you.

Flew out on the second UK-HKG flight. Check in a Gatwick was quick &
efficient and no queuing. However I was surprised I could not check
right through to Manila as I was going on with Cathay later the same
day. Told to collect bags in transit area. Plane boarded on time, but
seemed to take-off 30mins late. Told also we were going to be an hour
late in HKG "for navigation reasons". Seat was better than expected
comfortwise and leg room fair. The safety briefing was a shambles, and
crew seemed very nervous and unsure, one even tied the strings of the
life jacket around the front of jacket. Service of food and drink was
much better than expected, congratulations. Flight was smooth and
pleasant, although a slightly scenic over Russia!! Landed at HKG nearly
2 hours late, which meant we had very little time to get our Cathay
flight, only now under 2 hours from aircraft stopping at gate. When we
got into the superb HKG airport it was miles to transit area and the
queues were horrendous. No-one seemed to know how we got our luggage or
for that matter cared. We eventually pushed our way to a Cathay First
Class counter and pleaded our problem. We were booked to Manila with
Cathay, but our luggage was somewhere in HKG airport. Staff there was
sympathetic to our plight and issued boarding cards and told us to get
to our Manila flight, they would track our luggage and hopefully get it
to Manila on a later flight. They blamed Oasis for not having
interline check-in and baggage agreement, yet, with Cathay, which as the
biggest airline at HKG surely they must as a matter of urgency. Our
luggage eventually missed the next two Cathay flights and arrived the
day after, forcing us to return to Manila on a 14 hour return bus
journey to collect them, so were not exactly impressed. For a cheap
flight, it was value for money, and I hope it may continue at these
prices, but please get your interline agreement sorted out soon.

I flew on their second flight from Gatwick (28th/Oct) and returned from
Hong Kong (2nd/Nov). I was actually stunned at how good the service was!
I paid less for this flight than I do with Ryanair. No frills is a bit
of a misnomer. Two decent meals, a perfectly acceptable seat with good
leg room. Pleasant staff. Efficient check in (especially if you use the
in town service in Hong Kong). Smooth flight and landing. The operation
is new, so you must expect some bumps, but if you go in expecting
something not perfect you'll be pleasantly surprised.

2 November 2006
Flew with Oasis Hong Kong on its first flight from London Gatwick to
Hong Kong. Cannot believe this the airlines debut service was delayed by
3 hours, they say caused by ground staff damaging a door! All passengers
seated 10 rows nearby this door then had to be re-seated. On my return
journey the flight was delayed for 10 hours! Were we put up in a hotel
for the night, but all the badly organised arrangements to get to the
passengers to the hotel was laughable! Check in staff were extremely
slow in Hong Kong. And the actual service was what you would expect for
such a cheap ticket. A typical example of 'you get what you pay for!' I
wont be flying with them again, as the delayed inbound flight caused me
to miss my connecting flight, which meant me paying an additional £220
on a new ticket! Ill be flying a full priced scheduled airline next
time.
