Business

One of the upsides of fewer people booking business class is that those who still choose to travel in the premium cabins get a bit more breathing space. Not so on KLM, where cabin staff take the opportunity to fill every single business class seat after the aircraft doors close with all sorts of people who have obviously not paid for the privilege. This is especially prevalent on flights to/from the Caribbean. They seem to be hell-bent on chasing away any remaining full-fare customers - probably to make available even more seats for their friends and family.

KUL-CGK-KUL. New 773 aircraft with AVOD. Meal service for the 1.5hr flight was one choice only with a selection of drinks with your meal including water, sodas, beer or wine. Food was OK as a filler. Price was terrific offering a full service product for LCC prices.

MAN-AMS-BGO Return in Economy. All four segments on time, service efficient and friendly. Food adequate, if a bit basic, but at least they still serve something. Overall, a straightforward, efficient product at a very good last minute fare.

KLM works fine for me out of PRG via AMS to IAH and other destinations. FA's are pleasant, good meal and drinks service. Sadly, the fleet is somewhat elderly and the 747 combis used on some routes ought to have been pensioned off.

MUC-AMS-ARN. Transfer was a breeze. Crew professional and proactive on both flights. Purser on first leg informed every passenger about transfer and gates at Schiphol. Old Boeing 737-400s on both flights, but looked quite new. Appropriate leg room and comfy seats. Decent service for an intra-european flight with a large choice of beverages, really good coffee and tasty sandwiches.

Tokyo to Amsterdam and back. Tokyo to Amsterdam by 777 new aircraft, but 747-400 return to Tokyo. To Tokyo FAs were quite obnoxious treating Y class passenger. One female Dutch flight attendant yelled at me simply coming in to galley during break that I should not bother them taking a break. I came in asking for extra drink but she rudely grabbed my cup and told me to get out. Even said that I am rude bothering her break time. They need to learn how to treat passengers, and yelling at passenger is not acceptable.

AMS-MAD. I am a regular on KLM and have Elite status. Flights were on time and comfortable, small snack and drinks served by crew. Planes look clean and seating spacious if you get a seat in the rows in front of the emergency exit. Couldn't use online check in and got a pre- selected seat because I checked in at an Air Europa destination. Pre boarding for Elite levels appreciated. Arrival in Amsterdam before schedule but delays caused by docking system and painfully slow operation of jet bridge resulted in a frustrating late arrival.

ZRH-AMS-PTY return with two children. Crews friendly and helpful, Embraer 190 and MD11 very pleasant. Food service efficient, quality ok. FA's passing often through cabin on long haul, with different soft drinks, snack trolley in the galley. Good entertainment system. Ground staff at PTY friendly but some of them overextended when it gets bustling.

Flying frequently with KLM between Geneva and Amsterdam it appears each time the service and timeliness is spiralling downwards. The mini-cans of drinks and the snack on board appear to be very shameful to be offered. Old airplanes (Fokkers) which are often late and undergo last minute maintenance. Add an additional 20 minutes each way to get into the main terminal after arrival.

LHR-AMS-DXB and back economy class. I echo what others have said about online check in, its rubbish, its difficult to change seats, and large blocks of seats are unavailable, you seem to end up with the pre-assigned seats come what may. Check in at Heathrow was appalling, despite online check in you have to queue with all other passengers before you can drop you bags off, we waited over an hour. The two short haul flights where fine, snacks appropriate for the sector length. On both flights to and from Dubai the cabin was clean, crew friendly and AVOD perfectly acceptable. Crew did many drink runs and hot towels where appreciated. The only let down is the meals, I was offered chicken which turned out to be a far eastern dish not to my taste, I found it very unusual to be served this on a flight to the middle east. On the return for breakfast I opted for sweet pancakes, and I have never tasted anything so sweet in my life. Overall nothing wrong with KLM, but there is a budget feel to them.

DUB-AMS-KUL-MEL. Having to travel at last minute left me with few inexpensive options so I used my platinum card status to guarantee a seat later the same day. KLM codeshares with Aer Lingus on all routes from Ireland so it is impossible to avail of web check in or choose a seat, you have to rely on pot luck when you get to the airport. I checked in and was informed that the computer wouldn't issue any boarding cards other than to Amsterdam so I'd have to collect them in Schipol but my bags would be tagged all the way to Melbourne - not a good start. Arrived at Schipol and directed to the Fast ticket machines, entered my details and was referred to the agent, eventually given seat 44B, which I immediately said no to - the gleeful reply was 'people normally have to pay 30 Euro to choose that seat', why when its at the back, next to the toilet, galley and crew sleeping area I don't know - anyway, the plane was full so I just had to accept it. Made my way to the new crown lounges, a vast improvement on before, with free wifi and better showers but the food is decidedly random and of inedible variety. Got to the gate and whilst queuing heard my name being called and discovered I had been upgraded, so I couldn't complain about that. I never ever book business class as I cannot justify the expense, and having had a taste of it (well KLM's that is) I wouldn't pay the extra, the food was not that intrinsically different from economy save china plates and the ability to preorder for breakfast. The amenity bag consisted of socks, earplugs, toothbrush and pea sized amount of toothpaste and eye shades - I actually got a far better amenity bag on Etihad in economy just the week before! The seats are not lie flat just semi flat, and the entertainment system has seen better days. The staff however were attentive throughout. I have a certain amount of empathy for KLM having used them for a long time but they seem to be falling into the Long Haul Low cost carrier category rather quickly. I am glad to see, however the withdrawal of 747s on the AMS-KUL-JKT route and the newer 777's being replaced.

CPH-AMS-SFO. Short haul was fine, hassle free web check-in, flight on time, friendly FA. Meal ok. AMS-SFO a pleasant experience. Flight on time, meals above standard with somewhat fresh fruits included. The crew was pleasant and serving through out the flight. Seats ok and the cabin was clean.
