Finnair has non-existent customer service. Was supposed to fly with them Toronto- St.Petersburg-Toronto but had to cancel. I have spent a week trying to get a written statement of cancellation from them for my trip cancellation insurance but after a week of calling, faxing, and filling out all sorts of online forms, no response from Finnair. Every time I get somebody on the phone (which is difficult and costly), they promise to e-mail me "something", and advise me to fill out some form on the Internet for a more detailed response. I am yet to receive an e-mail and online forms produced no response whatsoever (no e-mail problems --- e- tickets and booking confirmation were delivered without a glitch). Flew with them once before, in 2005, same route, economy class. Service was ok then, but will never book with them again, given my current experience.

My mother used Finnair and had a horrible experience with them. Flight from Helsinki to Shanghai got cancelled due to "technical reasons". She has been keep waiting for some information almost 3 hours at the airport. Finally she was asked to go to a hotel nearby the Airport (Finnair did not bothered to bring her with a shuttle bus). Finally the day after, after nearly 12 hours of silence, Finnair told her she was re-routed to Shanghai via Nagoya airport. She left Italy on Friday Morning and landed in Shanghai on Sunday night. When I tried to call Finnair, nobody dared to answer the phone.

LHR-Helsinki. Going out fine - early flight, friendly stewardesses, nice meal. Some traval show on the shared screens which was nice touch. Clean and on time, boarding etc good. Return - waited an hour to check in so don't be late! There were 2 pax in business class and the only time the purser showed facial expression was when she literally chased a little girl out of business class as she wanted to use the loo and the cart was in progress. Meal was worst - tinned hamburger, chopped carrots and potatoes, and a tiny snickers miniature. Tray very flimsy and plasticky. Tea and coffee served right over your lap so watch out for turbulence.

HEL-PEK, HKG-HEL business class. Helsinki long haul lounge alright, not crowed because only one long haul flight departing. Beijing flight left 2 hours late due to technical reason. Missed our connection to Seoul, but were rebooked to the next flight upon arrival. Both flights on A340, J cabin in excellent condition. Polite and attentive crew, tasty meals and wines. AVOD worked well, but movie selection is quite limited.

MXP-HEL-NRT-KIX-HEL-MXP business class. A good product with professional crew and inflight service. A340/330 with Recaro angled lie-flat seats. Avod was good and catering quality good. The bad point was the Embraer 190 used from Helsinki to Milan that was inadequate for a 3hr flight - tight and uncomfortable in business class.

In the past two years i have flown with Finnair from Helsinki to Amsterdam (AMS), Vienna (VIE), Rovaniemi (RVN) and to Copenhagen (CPH). I have found the ticket price pretty expensive. I do not find their cabin crew friendly - I get a feeling that the FA's are almost to proud to work for Finnair. They never smile and do not have the best language skills. All announcements should be made in Finnish, Swedish and English, but many times they have been made only in Finnish and bad English.

DUS-HEL-NRT return in Business class, on Embraer 190 and A340-300. Check-in in DUS fast, efficient, BA lounge spacious and nice. Short haul DUS to HEL nothing special, rather small seats and narrow space in E90 plane. HEL airport very crowded, had to queue for emigration, lounge completely overloaded due to lot of Asian travelers. A340-300 for long haul was very new, nice and wide cabin (16 seats booked out of 42), nice business recaro seats, modern AVOD (but selection of movies was rather limited and it partly didn't work on return flight). Food tasty, but nothing extraordinary. Wines excellent! Had a good sleep on both flights although the usual problem with sliding to the floor. Cabin crews extremely attentive and friendly. All in all very good value for money as they offer extremely low fare for business flights to Asia at the moment. Paid about 50% of standard prices.

Copenhagen - Helsinki return. The outbound flight was a new Embraer 170, seats was very comfortable with generous legroom. The cabin was clean, food was so so, a little snack and juice. Nothing special. FA's kind and friendly. The return to Copenhagen was an A319, again with comfortable seats and good legroom. The food was the same story.

After my daughter missed her flight to St. Petersburg Russia because of an unforeseen last minute problem, Finnair cancelled her whole ticket and refuse to compensate me for the unused portion of her ticket. This has become an economic disaster for me. I had no idea they had such a policy and am still puzzled as to how I was suppose to know they would cancel the whole ticket without offering any compensation. This policy is not written on the itinerary I have and their US customer service is unavailable at night so there was no way to tell them the flight would be missed. I purchased a one way ticket for my daughter to St. Petersburg thinking she would be able to use her Finnair ticket to get back home. I am still in shock that this ticket has been cancelled and I have lost so much money. I feel like I have been robbed.

MAN-HEL-MAN. All flights on time, aircraft clean and well presented. Communication from flight deck brief (the English version at least) and FA's functional rather than involved with the pax. Choice of aircraft is one source of bemusement. 500 Euro cost in economy was another, but as I was not paying, was less important. A 3 hour flight international flight with no entertainment is one thing, but no hot food? Meal outbound consisted of 1 slice of bread sandwich, with a fish paste and a snickers (not a whole bar but a small one). Return a slight improvement with a cold meatball / pasta salad. Embraer may be an environmental choice of aircraft with technology and efficient engines, but it is not suitable for flights of this duration. Besides the lack of entertainment and poor meals, the seats were uncomfortable. I would not fly Finnair to HEL again on one of these aircraft.

BUD-HEL-ICN return economy. The last time I flew with them on business class to Shanghai was a few years ago and they were OK, not much more. The new planes are nice, legroom is good, IFE not great but OK. The food is very good and attendants excellent, friendly and efficient. Certainly one of the best European airlines I've flown on. The flight was expensive though, Finnair could make itself a little more competitive by pricing themselves a bit better.
