TLL-HEL-ICN return in business. I upgraded with points on cheap economy fare. Finnair was not able to organize business class check-in in TLL airport, and surprisingly long in the queue. In HEL after short hop, went into the lounge, where food and drink offerings have deteriorated since last year. Less food, less quality alcohol. Japan Airlines lounge in ICN is even worse. Food HEL-ICN and ICN-HEL legs was average. The stewardesses were not particularly friendly, while Korean staff were nice. Choice of movies weak and angled lie-flat seat seems little dated in 2009, when most of big carriers offer fully flat beds in business. Also they're really cutting down on amenities : socks, earplugs, eyeshade were the only ones given out. Water bottles on seats outbound leg, but none on the inbound. And it took 10 minutes after asking before I was able to get glass of water. Seems crew was undermanned or badly organized, cause business class was only half full and they're not being proactive, making sure customer has everything he/she needs. It gets tiring to push the button all the time. On a positive note, Finnair wine offerings were good.

BCN-HEL almost full A321. Enough good seat pitch at row 10. Rather rude crew, with no smiles. Lunch was poor, free drinks including wines are still a good side when flying intra Europe. Flight was punctual.

Amsterdam to Helsinki and Helsinki to Gotheborg. The first flight was on a clean and new A319. The check-in and boarding procedure at Amsterdam was quick. The seat was large and comfortable, crew was welcoming. The quality of food was average - Finnair served a warm meal for a flight of only 2hrs and 20min. I flew Helsinki to Gothenborg with Finnair, check-in and boarding procedure was again efficient and quick. The route was operated by a E-190, seat was a bit smaller than on the previous flight, but still comfortable and acceptable legroom. The staff was professional. A sandwich with a chocolate mini-bar, of good quality.

London to Osaka. The inflight staff were friendly but other inflight service was dreadful. Awful food, a movie selection with nothing newer than 4 years old. It is bizarre that I can drink as much beer and wine as I wish but have to pay for a snack - makes no sense! The return leg was a nightmare. We arrived at Helsinki with an hour to change to our London flight. The transit lounge was rammed full, taking ages for people to get through the x-ray machines ( I still don't know why we had to do this has we had only just got off the Osaka flight). In short one of our party missed the connection. Finnair refused to tell me if she had come through the chaos of the transit lounge. I was waiting for her but ordered on the plane by a surly attendant or told I would have to pay for another ticket. Arriving in London, I went looking for Finnair staff - no one about. I then spent the next 6 hours at Heathrow waiting for our stranded member to arrive on a later flight - which fortunately she did. To date Finnair have not replied to my complaint. Finnair may be a little cheaper but they are truly a dreadful airline!

Bangkok- Prague : Finnair beat all airlines when it comes to price. Check in online with ease and I chose my seats. At the airport I was surprised that almost no one checked in online and preferred to stay in a long line for actual check in. MD11 interior is ok - anyone who has a larger build than mine could have trouble feeling comfortable as Finnair gets 10 abreast in the back economy cabin. The legroom was generous but seats were narrow. The crew was a mix of older and younger ladies - did a good job, smiles and food was tasty and plenty. One criticism is that when the cabin lights dim, the large movie screens bother a person trying to sleep, especially when the airline offers no amenity kit. Flight to Prague on A320, food ok, drink rounds.

Bangkok to Manchester via Helsinki: wanted a short break in Helsinki so this was the logical option to my final destination Manchester. On the plus side the food was tasty and the economy seats BKK-HEL quite comfortable. On the minus side it was an expensive ticket, the planes to and from BKK-HEL are tired and old and flight staff the same. Checking in at HEL was chaotic and unprofessional. Seats on MAN-HEL route had no recline which for 3 hour flight was unacceptable. The new Finnair terminal in Helsinki is rubbish. Not again willingly.

LHR-HEL-HKG and NRT-HEL-LHR Business Class. I was pleasantly surprised by service. The flight to HEL was in a normal seat no different to economy but rather than 3 to a row they made it 2 to a row. On the A340 planes the seat was very good and meals nice too. For those who are used to a proper flat bed seat, these seats weren't the best to sleep in - these seats are angled lie flat so you can get a feeling of slipping to the bottom! Choice of IFE not as good as BA/Cathay but enough for a 12 hour flight. Business Class passengers can help themselves to snacks/drinks during the flight. The only issue is the tight connection time, if you're flying in from another destination this is great as long as it gets in on time. If you're delayed you'll miss the flight. However Finnair prides itself on being punctual. The savings plus the ability to gain points on your own frequent flyer program (must be Oneworld) makes Finnair a good cheaper option than a BA/Cathay.

Roundtrip Amsterdam-BKK with Finnair. I saved 300 euro compared to other airlines on a short term notice booking - but not a friendly crew. Horrible earphones no one was using them. Food was terrible. Wine and beer are free, but any spirits have to be paid for. And for a 9-10 hour flight we only got 1 movie - sans sound due to the non-functional earphones. I got a good price, but will never fly with this carrier again.

MUC-HEL in Y and positively surprised. Flight on time in a decent A320. Good seat pitch in row 5 and edible warm meal rounded off by round of drinks, tea / coffee. Smiling crew a bonus. Paid a very competitive price and would recommend Finnair.
