HKG-TPE-LAX. FAs are helpful, IFE is great as LAX almost always get the AVOD flights. The food is ok on the ex-HKG and good on the ex-TPE. FAs offered numerous things in between the meals during the long-haul flight and answer call bells within a minute.

SYD-FRA, FRA-BNE, via Taipei of course. I was on the whole impressed with China Airlines, especially because of the cheapest price out of everyone from Australia to Germany. Legroom was ok and the pillows and blankets quite comfy,. The food was quite nice, bar one positively disgusting pork meal on the way back. The most pleasing things were the flight attendants and inflight entertainment. FA's were extremely nice, smiley and helpful, answered call bells in a flash and were regular in the supply of refreshments. The inflight movies were great, with a wide choice. The major negative was FA's language skills, which need some improvement; they've mastered the basics well, but anything complicated and it becomes hard to communicate.

YVR-TPE-SGN; HAN-TPE-YVR Economy. B747s are old and in dire need of refurb. Service on flights is limited to food delivery and duty free sales. Food is fairly standard Asian fare, with catering better outbound from TPE. Minimal service plus lack of PTVs in Economy keeps CI at a 3-star rating.

KHH-TPE-YVR : found improving service in Business class. They had renovated the Kaohsiung lounge recently and it has improved inside. Took showers on both ways at the TPE lounge and found it relaxing. I look forward to their renovating the older 747-400's as they have the old style PTV's and only replay movies on a loop. FA's worked hard and introduced themselves in the begining of the flight.

Sydney-Vancouver via Taipei in Business. Picked China Airlines for direct flight to Vancouver without having to go through immigration in the US and the much cheaper fare compared to Qantas or United etc. On both trips, Business was only a third full, lots of space. Excellent flight, nice staff. Entertainment system great on the Sydney-Taipei leg, not so good on Taipei -Vancouver. Food OK but could do with some improvement, especially breakfast - no cereals, and I'd rather have a plain omelette than one filled with onions, coffee slow in coming. Transit lounge in Taipei very good except that you have to descend a very long staircase (I didn't find out if there was a lift). You can have a shower but you have to tell the staff upstairs and they will give you a towel and specify the exact 20 min you can use the facilities.

SYD-DEL via TPE return A330 both sectors. Flights on time, food okay and inflight service attentive. Excellent choice of AVOD.

BNE-YVR, A330 and B747. Great flight Brisbane to Taipei. A330 aircraft AVOD was excellent. Crew attentive and food and general service OK. Layover in Taipei bearable. Taipei to Vancouver is B747 and not as pleasant. No AVOD. Crew attentive and food and service OK. The plane was very full and many demanding pax late from connecting flight made life unpleasant for crew and other passengers.

Amsterdam to Bangkok Business Class on the older style 747. I thought the Business Class was excellent. We got the pre assigned seats we requested and cabin crew were 5*. Business Class seats do not go back 180 degrees but are comfortable. The food on the flight was fantastic although on the way out a lot of the starters were fish (fantastic for a fish eater but not for my self). The inflight entertainment was disapointing as you cant start a film when you like. I would recommend this airline highly for the price you pay..

Sydney to Vancouver with China Airlines at xmas time. Great service and thought the food was really good. Would definitely fly with them again. Worth the saving in $$$. Although, the only fault is having the stopover at the Miramar Golf Country Club - wasn't impressed with staying there at all.

AMS-BKK return in Business. If you get a window seat on the upper deck you can use the floor storage bin as a footrest using cushions and pillows - it's the only way of getting close to lying down in Business Class with China Airlines. The food was ok. Service from FA's very quick. Business class pretty full on outward leg almost empty on return leg. For the price I paid it was a good VFM ticket cost €1400 incl a MAN/AMS connection with KLM.

Brisbane-Taipei Economy. A330 aircraft with personal touch screens and spacious enough seating. Flight delayed half an hour due to delays at check-in - we were kept informed and this was fine. Onboard service attentive - call bells answered quickly and staff polite and proficient in English. Entertainment was good. Food was great.

SEA-TPE-BKK. Very good airline for the most part. Flew from Seattle as Vancouver flights cost a lot more, and to get to Bangkok required a switch in Taipei. Six hours is too long to spend in such a boring, expensive airport. Flight left on time at 1am and served a meal at 2:30 in the morning which was odd, but no complaints. Between meals reasonable and drinks reasonably cheap, I tried to sleep, and though the seats were small, they were rather comfortable.

Brisbane Taipei Vancouver. BNE to Taipei a newish clean plane with IFE screens in seat. Taipei to Vancouver, shocked at the age of the planes, very old, no entertainment screens on a 12 hour flight, plane was not only old but pretty dirty. However flight attendants excellent and clean toilets frequently. Food inedible, nothing left for 6 am breakfast except sushi. On the return journey a 15 hours layover at taipei, sent to the TaoYuan Hotel, in a seedy, smelly part of town, 20 mins from airport, and a 3 hour wait for the transfers there, horrible hotel, checked out at own cost into the acceptable and clean evergreen hotel at airport.

HKG-BKK return. Was dubious about this option as it was so cheap (around £140 return) but I was really impressed. Flights on time both ways, on a very new looking A330. Cabin crew very professional, multi-lingual and friendly, food very good . Seat comfortable and legroom adequate. Best thing however was the seat back IFE - the most advanced I've seen - difficult to decide what to watch!

AMS-BKK-AMS Business. Both flights on time and crew were efficient. A noticable major difference from previous flights on this route was the poor quality of the food offered. It was bland and appeared to be economy standard fayre served with metal cutlery and china! Was able to reserve the emergency exits in the upper deck which offered increased leg room, but as many previous reviews have indicated, the seats do not have sufficient recline and are uncomfortable. Nonetheless, I still believe that the business class product is good value and would certainly use this carrier again.

SIN-TPE A330-300 economy class. It was not so bad. It had a touch screen IFE which impressed me. The legroom was so cramped. The food was quite delicious. The staff were friendly but they mostly spoke Chinese - there were some who could speak English quite well. Overall I enjoyed the flight and would take China Airlines again.

Taipei to Los Angeles, Economy. Check-in fast and easy. CI is beginning to greet their Gold/Emerald/Paragon members in the Economy Cabins as well - makes you feel special yet also awkward because not everyone is being greeted in the cabin. The flight was not full, so had the middle seat left out. It was a night flight, so most of the time I was sleeping. IFE is good yet the slow response gives me a nerve. Dinner was great but western style breakfast is still the same old styles (they need to change it for once, they always change for the asian type). LA International Airport is on a running change, so be prepared for long lines and be on connecting buses back and forth.

AMS-BKK-AMS Business Class. Service pretty good. Ordered meal was once not available. Seats are from yesterday, not very comfortable max 60". Entertainment I never use. But at least I will travel with China Airlines again because they are much more cheaper than others (Business Class).

BKK-HKG A330. Cabin clean, staff provided good service, IFE with good choices of movies and music. Seat relatively comfortable. The only thing that needs more attention is their food and beverage products onboard. The food was horrible. I have flown CI quite a few times but their food has always been a let down.

BKK-AMS Dynasty class. Have been flying with China for 4 years every 8 weeks or so and have always had very pleasant flights. My only gripe is that their prices have crept up over the last couple of years causing me to try Qatar, who were excellent. Will stay with China Airlines at the moment but it's a very close call.

Hong Kong to Jakarta with new A330-300. Seat pitch is standard around 32inch, meal not as good as other carriers such as Cathay or even Garuda. However, the Fantasy Sky entertainment system installed was superb. Many movies choice with on demand feature. With it's lower price around 1300 HKD one way, I will certainly fly this airline again in the future.

Hanoi- Taipei-SFO. 747 old layout from Taipei to SFO. Plane clean - plenty of room as middle seat on my row was empty so room to stretch out. Only video was front of cabin old system which was difficult to see from my seat. Food was nothing to write home about. Cabin service was just okay. Attendants came through occasionally but at times was hard to get them. Hanoi to Taipei a new A330. Service much better but only a short flight of 2.5 hours. Would fly again for low cost if I could not get another Asian carrier, but only then.

Disappointment with China Airlines, in F class (outbound) and Business class (back). Outbound aircraft in F was not with the most recent F seats, ie arranged in rows of 4 in nose of 747, comfortable, but not horizontal. Okay for a regional flight, but one can find much better transpacific. Impressive menu on paper, but very ordinary (Chinese choice) once served, with substandard wines and general lack of attention by cabin crew - though there were only 6 pax in F. On the return, the 747-400 business class newest seats probably have one of the smallest pitches of all "new generation" cabins - it could not be more than 45". Extremely uncomfortable seating.

Taipei to San Francisco. The first half of the flight was great but the last half one of the worst I have had. A woman and two children were in the row in front of my wife and me. The children slept the first half of the flight but when they woke up they started yelling and running around bumping into people trying to sleep. Neither the woman nor her husband, who was sitting across the aisle, made any viable effort control of the unruly children. FAs took no measures I could see to encourage them to quiet the children down. After being awakened 4-5 times by their yelling and jumping my wife asked a Flight Attendant to find us other seats. She was told we could take any unoccupied seats. There were quite a few seats where one person was taking up a whole row of three or four seats but none otherwise unoccupied. The FA told her that if someone had already claimed those seats she would not ask them to move. So we resolved to bear with it and stay where we were. Shortly after I was awakened again by a cup of cold water being spilled or pored on my feet which were under the seat in front of me. Again my wife asked an FA to find us other seats. She was told again we could take any unoccupied seats but the occupancy situation had not changed. After about two hours the mother did shift the children to her husband who was sitting across the aisle from us which put them a little farther away but did not stop the commotion it only made the people in the rows in front and behind them miserable. I find it ironic the pilot announced on the public address system near the end of the flight that he hoped we had a pleasant flight and wished to see us fly China Airlines again in the near future. I’m sure if he had made the flight sitting in our seats he would not have thought it so pleasant.

SFO-TPE-DEL return business class. Excellent service from flight attendants, including fine hors d'oeuvres, meals, and drinks. On a 10-hour layover in Taipei, China Airlines gave me vouchers for a room - a large two-room suite at the Taoyuang Holiday Hotel and for dinner. My seat, 5A, was comfortable, with abundant leg room, and a good screen monitor. There's little to choose between China Airlines and Eva Air (also Taipei-based), but fares on China are generally better.

FCO-BKK-FCO. Economy class. Friendly and well-groomed flight crew, good entertainment system, warm blanket, nice food, intelligent service delivery (the 1st service starts from the front of the plane and goes backwards, the 2nd service goes the other way round, so they make sure each passenger gets their choice of meal at least once during the flight), I had a seat in the first row but the crew was present and pleasant throughout the flight, toilets very clean. Plane elegantly attired, complimentary slippers. I had all I could ask for. A very good experience

AMS-BKK-AMS in First and Dynasty Class. Service in F out to BKK was fantastic with priority boarding at AMS and attentive ground staff. Onboard, I found food superb and couldn't fault the old style seats, which recline to make a flat bed with privacy screen. Toilets immaculate, amenity kits well stocked and entertainment system in First is supplemented by in seat video players and a choice of films. Attentive and gracious cabin crew, who were always by my side at the slightest turn of my head. You won’t find Krug or caviar on the menu or Givenchy pyjamas on your seat but then you won’t be paying a crazy price. My return in Dynasty Class was good - I was happy to see the new seats on this aircraft until I tried to recline them. I was so shocked at the lack of recline, I mentioned to one of the crew that my seat was broken, only to find it wasn’t! Such a shame as the actual seat was very comfortable and pitch certainly big enough to allow a much more generous recline, which made it all the more frustrating. I would recommend China Airlines in First or Business but only the latter if the fair is competitive as you won’t have to spend much more to find a competitors business class seat that actually reclines!

AMS-BKK return via London City - first class on 747-400 - an absolutely wonderful experience at an unbelievable price. Seat was wonderful, slept like a log and the attendants were all first rate. Arrived in BKK ready for work.

TPE-LAX in Business Class. I was disappointed in their lounge as it was very full. The flight was great though. Good food/wine and friendly service. FA's really made an effort in making the flight enjoyable. Could improve on their English though. IFE was great as it offered a good variety of movies and games.

BKK-HKG Dynasty supreme class. A330-300 in good condition for both flights. J class has 36 seats in a 2-2-2 configuration with 50" seat pitch. On boarding in BKK drinks offered almost immediately, not just limited to champagne, water or juice. Food on outward sector was outstanding. Food on the return was not so good. The seats were comfortable, but only recline to a semi sitting position, despite the seat pitch, fine for short haul but I wouldn't want to try to sleep in them. Continual servings of wine, champagne and other beverages throughout the flight made it a very short trip. My first flight on CI and not my last.

SFO-Taipei-Hanoi return. Great service on both trips with plenty of food to eat and staff willing to get what you wanted and with a smile. The only possible downside was the drinks service which was limited to wines with meals. No separate cocktails/ drinks service offered. US-TPE leg is on older 747 that are beginning to show their age. Entertainment system is the style screen in front and a few TV monitors with no choice of movies. However, on the inter Asia legs, CAL flies new Airbus that are comfortable and great entertainment systems. The other plus was that these flights were half empty so everyone had an empty seat to spread out in! All in all I feel China Airlines offers is a great value for money especially as they charge among the lowest on the routes they fly. As long as they maintain their Asian standards of service this airline will continue to score high.

PEN to TPE to LAX Economy. Overall, the flight onboard B737-800 was excellent, though it's been delayed for half an hour. Seat was very comfortable, and leg room was plenty. Food was served approximately 45 minutes after take-off - selection pretty good for economy. Cabin crew very professional in serving the passenger. They were a couple of Chinese passenger complaining why they weren't served their pre-arranged vegetarian food. It turned out that there's some miscommunication between the ground catering and the airline itself. At the end of the day, the Chinese passenger were served buns and instant noodles. I would say that the inflight service manager handled the situation very well! There's no AVOD or personal TV, which was reasonable to me as it's only a medium haul flight. A headphone was handed out for every passenger for the IFE, which consisted of a decent selection of musics and movies. TPE to LAX onboard B747-400. The aircraft was a little bit old and no personal tv. Food was served 30 mins after take-off, and again it was excellent. Seat and the legroom were a little narrow, but it's okay. Cabin crews on this leg were very efficient and professional. Breakfast was served 2 hours before landing. It's very good. Service was up to standard in short. One thing is that China Airline's staff should be trained in their mastering of English, cabin crews and pilots. During the PA announcement, it's really hard to make clear what the pilots were trying to convey.

SFO-TPE-BKK return in economy class on Boeing 747-400. All flights on time with prompt baggage delivery. Overall impression is of a safe, friendly, and reliable airline which offers good value for money. Special Hindu Vegetarian meal requested was so-so; served chicken on the return leg which was replaced with a fruit platter! There are no personal TV screens but they did show recent popular English movies on the large screens. Air-hostesses are well groomed and efficient, but some lack finesse. The seat pitch is inadequate for tall passengers. China Airlines has a good duty-free collection which includes new electronic items out of Taiwan.

TPE-YVR Dynasty class. CI sometimes allow the upper deck biz class seats to economy passengers, and allow 1st class seats to biz class passengers when it uses 747-400 for regional (HKG, TYO) routes and Amsterdam. Now it is doing the same on YVR route 1 to 2 times a week (only departing from TPE). 180 degree lie-flat, noise-reducing earphone, 1st class blanket & pillow - otherwise service in biz class standards. Excellent service as usual, with select meals that are transferred from renowned hotels in Taiwan.

BKK-KHH in business class. What a nice surprise. I was not expecting such an outstanding service. I was greeted with my name onboard. The seats were old style reclining, but for the 4 hour flight good enough. They served a three course meal which tasted very good. I will certainly use them again.

AMS–BKK-AMS Dynasty class. 12/04 – 24/04 First time with China Airlines and pleasantly surprised. Pre-booked my seat beforehand and was sitting upstairs on 747. Old style business class seats, which I quite liked. Staff very attentive. Not long after take off we were served drinks and dinner, a good selection to choose from. Not long after the lights were dimmed to encourage sleep, a good idea considering on the outbound leg we land at BKK at 6.40am! Snacks were available on request if required. In-flight entertainment was OK. Not as good as some, i.e. Emirates but a good selection none the less. Return trip also good and the first time I have ever slept for 6 hours on a flight. Would recommend China Airlines Dynasty class without a doubt. A little bit of luxury at a sensible price.

SEA-TPE-HKG. Business Class. Chose to fly through Seattle as China Airlines offer the 340 with more spacious seating than the 747. As the flight left at 2.30 in the morning there was no need for food although they served a breakfast which seemed strange. Slept well. Brunch type of meal served before arrival in Taipei. Overall service attentive, but not polished. Transfer in Taipei was painless with the train which connects terminals one and two. Short flight to Hong Kong was on 747-400 and crew were very professional and well turned out. Served breakfast and arrived on time. Glad we chose the 340 from Seattle as the Business Class seat on the 747 really needs to be upgraded. Fine for a short haul, but not transpacific.

AMS/BKK in February 2007. Planes are old and tired. Business class old fashioned 85% recline only, but good space around. No priority on boarding AMS and no organisation at BKK. Lounges were very busy. Would NOT use service again ,despite good price, too much hassle I would only rate the experience as 2 Star.

TPE-LAX. No escort services for First Class - F cabin was full. Pre take off drinks offered. Seats were lie flat and adequate - fabulous pillow and generous two sided blanket. Seat had massage function. Indiviudal video screen and good selection of channels although control seemed quite complex to operate. One FA was sweet and the 2nd, needs another job. Service was disconcertingly not smooth. Water, bread, wine refills had to be requested. They ran out of the french red wine pre entree. Menu was generous although some items seemed quite odd - but not the beef tenderloin which is the best in the skies! Breakfast weird. Bathrooms, as most have mentioned, were kept very clean.

AMS-BKK return in Dynasty class. As previous writer Adrian Watts found this was definitely a "game of 2 halves". Outbound was in new style 747,with plenty of room on the upper deck to stretch out. The AVOD was excellent, as was the food. The second half was a rather different story. The 747 had clearly been around the block a few times, and was the old style seating. Whilst comfortable enough, it did not have the features of the newer version, and the AV system was a joke. To be honest, I just bedded down, and gave it a miss. The staff seemed in a hurry to get things moving, and the supper was unceremoniously dumped on the tray. Breakfast was not very appetising - I've eaten better in Economy class. Whilst I can understand that logistics and costs mean that airlines cannot upgrade all their planes at the same time, there is such a vast difference between China Airlines 747s,that the older ones leave a very bad impression to those who have already travelled in the new ones. All in all I think CI's service is excellent for the money (a vast saving over KLM, THAI ,Singapore etc). If there was a little more consistency over the fleet and services offered, the package would warrant 4.5 stars.

Flew Tokyo-Taipei-Sydney-Taipei-Tokyo three times. Agree with most of the comments so far. The flight to and from Taipei to Sydney is a gem. The aircraft A340 with superb entertainment systems. The main dishes are always excellent but the accompaniments could be improved for variety - especially if you dont have a taste for tropical fruits, which seem to come with all meals. Check in at Sydney is fast and efficient but in Tokyo there is always a long line of unruly passengers. Flight attendants have a lot to deal with and do a good job of having such a diverse group of passengers. The airline has the potential to be a top airline rather than a mediocre one. I would recommend getting the service level up on other routes by following the example of the Sydney Taipei route.

AMS/BKK return. Flight out from AMS was excellent. Flew Dynasty class and had the new fit plane. Seats very comfortable and large personal screen for watching movies etc. Service and quality of food was excellent - we were overfed. FA's extremely helpful and friendly. Return leg on the older fit aircraft and entertainment not as good - however it felt like there was more room than on the newly fitted aircraft. Again service was impeccable. I would highly recommend China Airlines and would not hesitate to use again. Going from AMS allowed us to connect from a regional UK airport too without the need to spend a few hours drive to and from the main London airports.

3 March 2007

After a wonderful HNL-Taipei flight on an Airbus, I was looking forward to the trip home three weeks later. What a rotten disappointment. The Boeing 747 had NO Avod, one huge screen playing chinese cartoons, featured a nasty 3 block hike lugging all carryons etc. on Narita stopover for Japanese "security check ". FAs nowhere near as helpful as on outbound leg, kept bringing food and playing cards to yelling 20 somethings who hollered and guffawed throughout the 6+ hours. Plane distinctly shabby. Food if anything worse than on outbound. Ridiculous breakfast service an hour and a half out of HNL meant a FA reached in and snapped my seat upright while I was getting the only nap I'd had all night. What kind of Airline requires everyone to put seats upright when they decide to serve food? Will not fly this airline again.

BNE to TPE. Excellent AVOD. Seats are ok for 5ft8" guy but could be hard for taller one. Food below average. Drinks for meal tray and bar service are very small portion. Drinks only on requested during the flight. No FA do any drink run for this day time flight. Toilets are not clean at all especially towards end of flt. No warming attentive service from FAs in my zone. Heard they have good reputation in customer service but I suppose I just had bad luck this time this flight.
