A tale of two airlines. Sydney-Guangzhou-Melbourne in Premium Economy. What a contrast between 2 flights.
Sydney-Guangzhou was an airbus with a 2-3-2 configuration. The seats were like the old Qantas business
class seats and were more than adequate. The food was hot and tasty and the staff friendly and courteous.
The IFE was very poor and the TV screens must have been the original 4 or 5 inch units which were blurred
and fuzzy. Fortunately we had our iPads to watch some movies on. The return flight was a totally different
story. The seats were 2-4-2 and were exactly the same as the economy seats behind. The only difference was
more leg room. There was no PTV and the IFE was on the fixed panels on the bulk heads. The food was
awful, the toilets were filthy and smelt. The stewardess assigned to our section was sullen and did not smile
once.

PEK-TAS-PEK new A330. Good seats, ok food. Unfortunately IFE didn't work and we were given portable DVD devices,
they had only bad movies on them. Inbound and outbound staff very different but in general okay service. Classic
China phenomenon, beer is warm. Flights were on time though.

Business from SYD-CAN-AMS. SYD-CAN on an A330-300 and had older style angled lie-flat seat and smaller
AVOD screen. Everything functioned but a limited choice of Western programming. Service can be a little
rushed and inconsistent. With only a single bottle of barely chilled Australian Chardonnay on offer this isn't a
flight to experience a 'cellar in the sky'. Food was reasonable but the description in the menu didn't match
what was presented a few translation issues to be worked on. CAN-AMS on a newer A330-200 with flat seats
and a larger, better quality LCD screen. Beverage choice slightly improved; food was well presented, nothing
extraordinary. Chinese dishes were no better than from a simple takeaway.

Business from SYD to CAN to SIN. I was reminded that cheap is not always better value for money though.
On both legs the seats were too small for a full sized western male. On SYD-CAN the food was reasonable,
the second leg was terrible. Even though you have 1hr 40 mins transfer time in CAN, the immigration line is
horrible. They were unable within that time to have my bag transferred between the planes. They have a lot
to learn and lot of choices to make - use only if price is your only criterion.

Travelled to Beijing via Guangzhou in premium economy. While the seats were the same as economy you did
get more leg room, that's where the benefits stop. Cabin crew were absent most of the time and not very
friendly - virtually no English skills. Aircraft only had drop down screens and entertainment was terrible. The
toilets were not kept clean and I found no toilet paper or hand towels. Would only suggest using them if you
are on a very tight budget.

Beijing-Amsterdam. Flight was okay, no real problems. IFE was very good but one thing was quite bad: For
lunch I got two very small glasses of wine - more a shot than a glass. After a couple of hours dinner was
served, I ordered a glass of wine with it but the wine had run out. I don't need to get drunk on a flight but a
glass of wine with a meal would be great.

Recently flew to Hanoi with my daughter. Service was quite good, although it was sometimes difficult to get
a drink - not offered as frequently as other airlines. All round, a good service at a reasonable price. The
biggest problem is going through Guangzhou airport! It is in need of a major upgrade, everything looking
tired and in need of refurbishment.

TAO-HKG, CAN-PVG. Average flight experience on both legs. Food fair, FA's were good, but not outstanding.
Same procedure when leaving CAN airport, herded to a holding area to a bus, to the plane that is away from
the terminal. Makes you feel like farm animals being herded.

Economy from Kuala Lumpur to LAX. KUL to Guangzhou okay. Minimal leg room even in exit row. Bland but
edible food. Guangzhou to LAX painful. Promised exit row, but didn't get one. Seat wouldn't recline. Unable
to lower tray without it resting on my knees, so I was unable to eat or drink anything for entire flight.
Courteous complaint to staff was basically ignored.

Staff were courteous. One meal was cold. The flight from Guangzhou to Auckland was very uncomfortable due
to the cabin temperature being very high. The plane an A330 had no individual air adjustment. Any future
flights I will have to bring a personal fan.

Hong Kong-Wuhan. Flight crew pleasant. Check-in was good. Inflight meal for economy was OK, not much
flavor in the pork noodles though. Comfortable 737-800 plane, and were given blankets which were needed as
it was very cold. Other than that, it was great.
