MAN-ORD-MCO return with American. The ground staff at MAN welcomed us to American Airline's
"Flagship Service" to Chicago, so expectations were heightened - only to be dashed onboard by
a seriously tired and dirty cabin on the 767-300. It was like going back in time! Seats very
uncomfortable - however reasonable leg room. Entertainment terrible - no personal seatback
screen. Larger screens throughout cabin, as first seen in 1982 or so. Service OK, nothing
amazing - outbound crew better than inbound. To call this "Flagship Service" is a little
misguided when compared to Virgin, BA, Qantas and Cathay Pacific, all of which I have used
recently. Any alcoholic drink was not complimentary, even with the meal. Internal flights were
functional and not much different to the international flight standard. All in all, American
had more of a feel of a very poor budget airline than a national carrier - well below
expectations.

MIA to LAX for $300. Flight on older 767 to LAX, but plane seemed clean and crew nice. They
offer Boston Market sandwich on this flight ($10 ripoff, but at least it's food). No in seat
entertainment on this plane, but I managed with old-fashioned reading. LAX to MIA, flight was
oversold, on a newer 777 with IFE, and it offered more choices than anticipated. The crew
wasn't great (it took a while to respond to my call), but were adequate. Lastly, my luggage
was misplaced by another carousel, but soon found. I had a couple of minor issues with AA, but
they deserve their fair rating and I would not worry about flying with them.

MAN-ORD economy return mid-June. Flights uneventful and punctual, but everything else was poor
- maybe that's all you can expect when AA only get £100 for 7000 miles. Our last experience
of AA was quite favourable - when some seats had been removed and seat pitch increased. AA
have let things slide since then. In particular the food was barely edible, air quality
dreadful and inflight entertainment a waste of space. The 767-300 must be one of Boeing's
poorer designs and AA's drab decor does little to relieve the cramped feeling in the cabin. We
fly transatlantic once per year and each year notice a further deterioration in standards,
regardless of carrier.

Cabin Flown: | Business |
JFK-LHR Business. Very swift check-in and almost no queues at security. Admirals Club crowded,
and you get two complimentary drink tokens (with associated cultural expectation to tip the
barman) and after that you have to pay steeply for anything else. New business class cabin
looked good but the devil is in the detail. When the seat is fully reclined, you slide under
the shell in the seat in front at least up to your knees, so turning around or getting up is
impossible without partially raising your seat. Getting out into the aisle from a window seat
is extremely difficult, as in most of the reclined positions the chair is actually quite high
off the floor, and with the other passenger's legs tucked well under the shell seat in front,
there is little they can do to let you out other than get up themselves. Departure was on
time, with dinner orders taken before the doors were closed, with a surprisingly good quality
menu. I was amazed how quickly and efficiently dinner was served, with no apparent rush to
finish by the crew and get on their breaks. I skipped breakfast, but it looked to be a light
continental affair. Not great new seats but surprisingly good service from the crew.

DCA-ORD-LAS return first class. No lines at DCA for check in or screening. 10 minutes after
getting off of the Metro train I was at my gate. B737 from DCA to ORD had new seating in
first class, about as comfortable as the old seats. Breakfast fine but heavy on the carbs.
Service efficient. ORD to LAS an M-80 with older seats but in good condition. Lunch was good
- salmon oriental salad. Return flights enjoyable. LAS-ORD on time. A movie was shown and
lunch was bad - chicken and cheese sandwich, which was not appetising. On time landing still
left us delayed getting to the gate because the one we were originally assigned was, according
to the captain, broken. Still plenty of time for connecting flight. ORD-DCA with a
comfortable seat. FA good at handling high-powered types who didn't want to turn off their
cell phones after the door closed. FA's good service (drinks and nuts, followed by hot
towels, dinner) on a short 1.5 hour flight.

We had a booking on American Airlines in connection with a cruise. The booking was made 90
days in advance. Our flight was cancelled one hour prior to departure time. We then had to
stand in the ticket line to rebook. The ticket agents were extremely rude and unhelpful.
They acted like they were doing us a favor. No one offered any apology for their screw up nor
were we compensated in any way for our inconvenience. The last minute booking initiated a TSA
specialized screening, which was fun. I don't understand why these people are still in
business. I'm waiting for them to go under.

Just returned from a wonderful 3 week road trip in the USA. Only problem we came across was
flights with AA - both flights to and from the UK were a nightmare. FAs had a bad attitude,
gave the impression they did not enjoy supplying service they are there to provide. No
customer interactivity, eye contact or humour. They also had a scruffy appearance to compliment the attitude.

Waiting in MIA airport for a flight to BNA, we were told the flight would be delayed because
the only crew available to fly the plane was coming to Miami on a flight from Atlanta which
had been delayed due to weather. American Airlines no longer employs enough people to give
themselves any options when inevitable delays like this occur. On a positive note, the AA
employee who made the announcement that the the crew was in flight and that we would depart at
a certain time added her own comment "but that's not realistic. Your flight will probably
depart 30 minutes later than that." Her honesty was a breath of fresh air.

London Heathrow - Boston return. Outward taxiing and were next in line to take off when pilot
announced that they had received reports of "weather up front" and were going to take on
additional fuel (tight margins or what?). Returned to terminal and took off two hours late -
not fun with a ten month old baby. Flight smooth (that'll be the weather up front) and FAs
friendly and helpful in a formal sort of way. Old aircraft in both directions with screens on
bulkhead instead of seat backs and the in-flight entertainment was poor. Food average. Had
some problems with automated check-in at Boston and AAs customer service was very poor with
unhelpful disinterested staff most of which seemed to have a major attitude problem towards
customers who needed their help.

SFO-JFK & JFK-LAX. Flying internal flights across the US proved to be that of a very different
experience. Food on offer is very poor quality, considering it's a 5-6 hour flight and the
fact you have to pay for it is disappointing. FAs clearly didn't want to be there and had very
scrappy uniforms on. American Airlines has an aging fleet, staff & way of doing things. Don't
see these guys surviving for a lot longer without some serious reform.
