Valencia - Milan Malpensa Business Class. Business class seat on this aircraft is really comfortable. Wide and a good recline. Service impeccable, food good. It is a shame that the business class seat on the Airbus come nowhere near to the levels of the MD. Departed and arrived on time, nice flight, good comments from cockpit crew on route.

YYZ-MXP-OTP and back. Outbound, boarding totally disorganized, no pre-boarding privilidges for business class or elite customers, basically a big free for all. Once the crew served the (barely edible) dinner, they disappeared for the rest of the flight. 767 was worn down, and dirty, the lavatories were dirty and my seat pocket in front of me was ripped and barely hanging on. Flight from MXP to OTP was on an equally old MD80, but the crew was a bit more friendly. On the return, it was back to that MD80, and a little piece of a cardboard sandwich for the 2 hour flight, again disorganized boarding, and deplaning in MXP had to be done via the tailcone since there was no stairs available. MXP-YYZ again on an old 767, and again the crew disappeared after the (better) meal. They put out a self-serve table with cups, water and coke in both galleys for people to serve themselves while the crew chatted away in the galley behind the curtains. How this airline is still in business is beyond me.

Four of us flew Heathrow to Rome and a sort of internal flight from Rome to Florence last week. All the flights were on time, service was pleasant and our luggage transferred successfully. We were given seats together. We would certainly fly with Alitalia again.

VLC-LHR via MXP. When checking in at VLC they would not issue onward boarding passes due to a computer problem. On arrival in MXP proceeded straight to London gate where the flight was boarding. Despite originally being told issuing a boarding pass at the gate it quickly became evident the flight was overbooked. Without a boarding pass we were the first to be denied boarding. Alitalia now try to tell us it's a missed connection not denied boarding! Offered a hotel 30mins plus from the airport and flight the next day. AZ are a shambles all handling done by SEA employees who abdicate responsibility to AZ. AZ employee at the ticket desk rude and unprofessional. As for the flights themselves aircraft very tired, lots of broken trays ripped seats and dirty. Catering included the smallest sandwich and some awful wine.

Milan to Brindisi. Apart from my wife, my daughter and I being split up (we were not the only ones this happened to) the flight ran on time and we landed on schedule. Sure the cold drink was warm and the choice of biscuits poor, but they seem to keep the promise that their website fares are the cheapest available. Even the fact that the aircraft was a late 80's model was not that bad, it seemed to pre-date the age of cramming as many people in as possible and was more comfortable than most new 737s. We left the aircraft happy with what we had paid for.

FCO-LIS Y class. Smooth internet check-in, but rude attendant at drop-off baggage counter. I was seated in 4A, a C class seat (wider and bigger pitch) in the economy section, which was great. One sandwich, a drink and a small cookie were served - small quantity for a lunch-time flight, but they were acceptable in terms of quality. FA's professional. Bags took ages to get to the carousels.

FCO-LIS in Y class. Smooth internet check-in, but rude attendant at the drop-off baggage counter. I was seated in 4A, a C class seat (wider and bigger pitch) in the economy section, which was great. One sandwich, a drink and a small cookie were served - small quantity for a lunchtime flight, but they were acceptable in terms of quality. FA's professional. Deboarding was a mess, as the two buses in LIS didn't move for 15 minutes after all pax were already there. Bags took ages to get to the carousels too. Just chose AZ for the miles in my Flying Blue card, otherwise I would have flown TP. Overall, AZ has low standards for the current times.

Amsterdam to Tel Aviv via Milan, truly gave us a lesson in how not to travel with small children. At Milan, my husband enquired whether there would be priority boarding for children (we travelled with a 3, 2 and 1-year old) and was told to "go away" by a member of the airline's ground staff, to the dismay of a group of other parents all waiting to ask the same thing. On board an ageing aircraft, the seats were broken, toilets untended-to, the inflight entertainment system played without anyone being offered headphones, and it was almost impossible to get hold of even a glass of water before or after the meal. Despite having requested seats together, or nearby, we were separated by several rows throughout, with cabin staff making no effort to request other passengers to exchange seats. Delays on check-in at Amsterdam took around 45 minutes, with no explanation as to why a huge queue was forming. Though the Milan-Tel Aviv leg was only around 3 1/2 hours long, we came out of it as if from a long- haul nightmare - we'll never fly with Alitalia again.

EWR-FCO, MXP-JFK in business class. Both flights on 777, which was comnfortable despite the seats not being lie-flat. Food good, but portions a little small. We would probably fly AZ again but only on the 777.

We had the misfortune of being scheduled on Alitalia after requesting Continental. They had our family scattered about the cabin (and apparently, everyone else's family as well) and the negotiating and re-positioning took forever, delaying our take-off. How hard is it to seat families, who, by the way, book well in advance, together? The food was among the worst we've ever encountered in the air. Much of the inevitable difficulties of air travel (each airline has developed its own economizing foibles) can be tolerated if the crew is attentive and friendly. Alitalia was, without a doubt, just the opposite. They were inattentive, even surly. Our attempts at engaging them in broken Italian was met with dour looks, feigned ignorance, and downright contempt in some instances. Rome was terrific as always, and the Amalfi Coast was wonderful - but we'll travel by some other airline next time. No wonder their financial condition is shaky. Truly the worst air travel experience we've ever had.

TXL-MXP and MXP-DXB return. Very smooth check-in. Flight attendants made a professional impression, polite with good English skills. Seating quite comfortable, inflight entertainment is a little bit poor.

My husband and I travel to Italy frequently to visit family. This was my first experience traveling on Alitalia and I'm hoping to avoid the airline in the future. Alitalia was generally rundown and offered little service. Seats were dirty and offered very little room. Many of the seats around us were broken and failed to recline properly. The crew handed out headphones that didn't fit properly for the entertainment on the flight to Milan. The food served on the aircraft was among the worst airline food we have encountered and not even edible. The drink service was also stingy. In general, I would advise booking with another airline if possible and you can afford to.

Never, again. JFK-Milan Malpensa economy. We took this flight, and from the moment we got on the plane knew we had made a mistake. People sitting wherever they wanted, no direction or assistance from crew, who obviously wanted to be somewhere else. Most of the crew were abrupt at best, and openly hostile to anyone who could actually find one and dare ask a question. Inflight entertainment may have worked, if they had handed out the right headphones, the ones we got were unable to be used with our seats. Once again no explanation. My wife is very obviously pregnant, and we were travelling with our two-year old daughter, when we eventually found a crew member and asked for some water, it took over half and hour, and repeated requests, to get some for them

Milan (MXP) - Buenos Aires on Economy class. Overall a fine trip. We came with a connection flight from Copenhagen, and did there fore not check-in in Milan. Boing 777-200 plane, on F/G seats. The seating was pretty standard. I am quite tall (187 cm.), but found to have ok legroom which was nice. I am glad, that I was not seated on an E space, as these have a box for the entertainment system underneath. It would have been a problem for me, as I would not have sufficient leg room. I was disappointed to find that the headrests could not be adjusted in height, which in many other airlines is standard. The entertainment system did not work, so movies on the big screen. The meals was ok but no more than that.

LIN-PMO. I didn't have the best experiences with Alitalia in the past but they were the only company to operate an evening flight from Milano Linate to Palermo. Check in quick and efficient but that was about the only good thing to say about this trip. We boarded on time but still managed to catch up a 30 minutes delay, due to reasons that were kept secret from the passengers, and we didnt get an excuse either. During take off passengers starting swapping seats without any crew members intervening - how is that possible? Alitalia operate old MD80 aircraft with tired interior - the attitude of the crew was neither particularly friendly or cheerful. We arrived in Palermo 20 mins late, still without any excuse. Luggage arrived fairly quickly. I will keep on staying away from Alitalia unless I have no choice.

JFK-FCO return Magnifica class. We chose this direct flight rather than going with United via Dulles. We won't be making that mistake again. Whilst the ground crews do a good job, and the cabin is quite comfortable, the attitude of flight attendants is appalling. As noted by others on this board, the cabin crew disappear for long periods, and ignore the call-button. There was lots of eye-rolling and tongue- clucking when they decided to leave the galley and grace us with their presence in the cabin. The experience on the return trip was only slightly less unacceptable, with the crew more visible and less hostile, but still far from friendly and helpful. If Alitalia fails to emerge intact from it's current financial chaos, it will be no great loss to those of us who pay a fortune for premium-cabin tickets. We certainly won't make the mistake of flying with this 2-star airline again, nor will we shed a tear if it is forced into liquidation.

SOF-MXP-MAD. Inbound flight only 10min late, plane was full on MD-80. Small sandwich, soft drink and tea/coffee offered for 1h 50min flight. MXP-MAD, plane the same. Again cramped with people. I would fly Alitalia again but only via Rome Fiumicino airport.

BOS-FCO. Crew, food, and entertainment very poor quality. After a much delayed take-off, I used my call-button to attempt to request a pillow and blanket for my daughter and me (who did not have pillows/blankets on our seats when we boarded). After waiting 30 minutes for someone to respond to the button I went to the back of the plane to find the attendents talking amongst themselves. I requested a pillow and blanket but we never received a pillow or blanket even after multiple repeated requests. Rome to Boston. During the check in process our seats were moved. Even though I had reserved specific seats six months prior when we bought the tickets and confirmed those seat reservations before our departure, we were informed there were no seat assignments with our reservation. The employee that checked us in did not seem to care that our family would be scattered across several rows. I can only attribute this situation to a computer error since it seems to take an extended period of time to check us in on both flights. As a result of being in the rear of the plane, we ended up with no choice for dinner. We were provided one of the worst fish dinners I have ever received - the crew told us if we didn't like fish we should have requested a special meal choice. To cap it off, there was no video on the 9 hour flight due to audio problems with the video system. During our travels in Italy we found the people warm/friendly, the food excellent, and the service very accommodating. None of these characteristics extend to Alitalia. As a result, when we return to Italy, we will not fly Alitalia.

A return trip Chicago-Milano-Sofia. I had heard some complaints from other customers about plane delays, etc. and I was surprised that flights were on time. The planes are a bit old but overall conditions on the flights from Chicago to Milano and back were decent. The crew attendants were generally responsive and nice although I did not ask for anything in particular besides on their regular trips through the alleys. I was happy that there was a tray with soft drinks when that you could serve by yourself. The soft drinks were flat and warm; but water was good. My husband had some wine and said that it wasn't good. The Malpensa airport in Milano was quite nice - there were comfortable chairs, nice coffee and you could get breakfast at a decent price. All in all, it has been a good experience so far.

LHR-MXP-CAI Business class, return Economy class. Check–in staff at LHR friendly and efficient. Meal service ex-LHR rushed and food was appalling. Flight attendant was rude. Airbus A321 looked tired and my seat did not recline. Service out of Milan was friendly but the food offering is extremely poor. Apparently Alitalia has drastically changed the service procedures on board, you don't get a welcome drink, and only plastic glasses are used in Business class. Looks like in order to save money they are not even ordering large tray liners using instead 2 small liners. Only one entree choice (pasta), and some revolting fruit compote for dessert. Bread is not warm on board (Flying time is 3:40 hours) only 3 passengers flying BC. Crew on the Cairo – Milan flight were pleasant. The economy class tray consists on two disgusting cold plates (No ovens are fitted on the Airbus fleet for Economy class) luckily there was a bread roll and cheese and crackers as these were the only 2 edible items on the tray. Again no trayliners used. Looked unhygienic and messy. My seat on this worn out A321 could not hold the upright position. MXP-LHR service was friendly and the sandwich was edible! However, my seat was broken and I kept sliding out of it.

Milan to Miami in Economy. The worst service we have ever experienced on an airline. Other than the two meals, we never saw the stewards. They spent their time at the back of the plane chatting with each other. This was a 10 hour flight. After the first hour, they began to serve the first meal. We did not see them again for 7 hours when they served the 2nd meal, which was a snack. No walking the aisles to see if you wanted a drink, peanuts, pretzels or anything. They left the drink carts out at the back of the plane, for self service - only if you discovered this when you went to the bathroom. Never a smile or pleasant greeting from any of them. when they were serving the spent most of the time talking to each other. They would not allow my 10 year old daughter to use her DVD player or Gameboy. Does anyone know why? There is no technical interference reason that I know of that these could not be used. They allowed laptops, but not if you used your DVD in it.

Bilbao-Milan-Lemezia, Lemezia-Roma-Madrid Economy. While attending a conference in Italy, we had no choice but to use this airline. The flight from Spain to Milan in an Embraer plane wasn't bad, except for the poor food. The internal flights were on old MD, really showing their age. On both legs seats were cordoned off because they were broken. The toilets were stained and the food was minimal. Chaos on return at Rome airport. Arrived at check-in desk at the requested time and waited in line for almost an hour with no information. Flight to Madrid finally left over an hour late with no apology or explanation in an old MD. Every flight left late and I am told this is the norm. The only positive experience was they didn't lose my luggage. I am told this company is in financial straits. It deserves to go under. Under no circumstances will I fly with them again, I don't care how cheap the tickets are.

Bucarest-Milano-Casablanca. In Bucarest, you board (late) in an antique specimen of MD-80 airplane. Dirty walls and ceilings. The stewardess extremely rude. Just a piece of cake and lukewarm orange juice served for a 2h30 flight. Malpensa Airport - No toilet around and no toilet at the gates: please wait until boarding to use the plane facilities. I had to argue for half an hour to access the business lounge since they are not eager to retrieve your frequent flyer credentials. I am aware Alitalia uses Amadeus as their CRS and the system is very well capable to retrieving the FFQ number and details just by using a passenger's name. Worst lounge anyway. Food Servings of just potato chips and olives were made. Expensive Wi-Fi access "under maintenance". No call for boarding, you are on your own. MXP-CMN, 3 hours flight and just a cold sandwich (5% cheese filling) served for lunch. No choice, no wine. Flight attendants unhappy and unfriendly. Please visit the toilets: bowls are stained and dirty, even at the beginning of the flight. Worn upholstery and very uncomfortable seats. Alitalia really don't deserve its position in the SKYTEAM alliance and merely a 2 stars in the Skytrax ranking.

LHE-MXP-BRI-MXP-LHR in Economy. Started check-in queue for 10:25 flight at 08:30. Chaos due to earlier cancellation. Various useless announcements. Got to check-in desk eventually to be told flight had closed. After arguing, one (the only helpfu) ground crew (Danielle) got us seats - not together, one in Club, two economy. Tickets were booked 9 months back and we are on their frequent flyer programme. Escorted through security to plane which was then an hour late. Disgusting Club breakfast. of smoked fish and mini pizzas - or was it lunch? Just made change at MXP, needless to say our bags didn't. But they arrived next day and staff at Bari were very helpful and courteous. Return on 3 June 07, local check-in at Bari easy but plane to MXP was late and could not check through to LHR initially. Sorted (Bari check-in had wrong time for flight out of MXP to LHR), and as before just made connection at MXP. At LHR, arriving early, surprised and delighted to see our bags arrive. Alitalia offers great prices (these flights were £££ cheaper than BA or Ryanair) but is hopeless. Ground crew at LHR are largely pathetic, flight attandants very variable. Planes are also old (though I enjoy MD80s) and tatty but have loads of legroom. Please may Air One take them over and not Aeroflot.

JFK-FCO on Boeing 777-200 in May 2007. Flight took off 1 hour late. But dinner was good. Smiling air hostesses served efficiently. Breakfast was very good. I got my checked in bag. They didn't loose it! The return was FCO-LHR. The flight got delayed by 1:30 hours, which was very usual, but MD-80 looked very well maintained and the food served was very good this time as well by smiling cabin crews. Will definitely fly with them again.

STR-MXP-TUN and back in May 2007. Flights acceptable and on time, food consisted only of a snack (ok for STR-MXP but on the onward flight I had hoped for a breakfast at least). Drinks okay. MXP-TUN, my luggage was left behind, to be delivered with the next flight but it was left to me to have it picked up at the airport! On the way back, no more of these surprises - and even a smiling hostess on the MXP-STR leg.

I flew to Milan out of Boston on Alitalia for the first in April 2007. We decided to take a chance in despite of the bad reviews I had read - I wish I had taken those reviews more seriously. Needless to say it will be the last time I fly Alitalia. My main complaint is the service onboard. The flight attendants were unfriendly and unhappy, no once I saw a smile on their grim faces. I even tried to make a friendly conversation but only received a cold, snobby look. I was appalled to their negligencw to respond to the call lights. A lady sitting two rows from me had used the call light and it took 15 min for a flight attendant to respond to it. These flight attendants need some serious Customer Skills Training.

São Paulo to Munich through Milan Malpensa. Crew, with no will nor readiness to serve and be available. Traveling along with 60 colleagues to attend a fair in Germany, we were unanimous to agree that Alitalia is far behind other airlines regards service on board, meal quality and presentation - even the absurd of having a staff steward taking a smoking brake inside the lavatory.

SKP-MXP-AMS economy. SKP-MXP - ERJ 145 is small but comfortable, though the flight goes over the Adriatic and as usual there are turbulences which made this flight one of the scariest I've been on. The stewardess extremely rude, didn't have coffee which is quite annoying. Malpensa Airport- I don't want to talk about it, there is no toilette at the Gates- imagine that, so one is forced to wait the boarding and use the plane facilities. MXP-AMS empty MD 80, which is so old, I think the ERJ is a baby compared to this one. Again no coffee, you choose between sweet and salty (!) and that's it. Luckily, I got the baggage on time, which is quite surprising for Alitalia. Will fly with them again if they put a normal plane on MXP-SKP.

NAP-MXP-JFK return Alitalia biz class. As usual NAP-MXP only full economy service - some cookies and one drink served full packed flight good legroom, but seats really narrow and if you get a middle seat like me seems to in cage. Alitalia lounge in MXP very full, hard to get even a seat, full stock of newspaper, but limited food - just cookies and some junky food, but good bar service, no internet facilities. MXP-JFK 777-200 2x2x2 configuration, recaro seat really confortable, wide and seat pitch of 70" - IFE on demand but limited choice of movie, also a little bit complicated on use it. Waited almost 30 min for pre take-off drink and we get it on rushed due take-off time. Amenities bulgari bag, really big but few amenities inside. Food disappointing, two choice of pasta served by trolley, but lacking taste and fish or meat as second choice, good but not of biz class level, cheese plate, fresh fruit and desserts, wine cart extensive but only three choice. Station bar during flight with beverages and some snack - before landing a snack plate with cheese and salad. Seats reclining 160 degrees - enough comfortable to kill 2-3 hours of sleep, but no more. JFK-MXP fast check inn, lounge very confortable but as usual with Alitalia lounges just junky food. Flight uneventful, same disappointing food and even worst breakfast.

BUF-TLV via ATL and FCO with Alitalia (codeshare with Delta) with a 13 hour lay over in Rome. Took a day tour of Rome and on returning to the airport 3 hours before the next flight, we were told that the flight was overbooked and we had been placed on standby. I explained that we were in transit with no change of clothing as our bags were checked straight through to our final destination. Shortly before the scheduled departure we were informed that we would have to spend the night in Rome and that we would be issued immediately with boarding passes for the next flight 24 hours later. There was no alternate routing available. We were advised not to have the bags taken out of transit as it would take about 3 hours and it was already nearly midnight. To their credit, Alitalia did provide accommodation and monetary compensation together with meal vouchers which we were not able to use due to dietary requirements. Again spent the day in Rome and when we went back to the airport I approached the service counters at least 3 times to make sure that our bags would be on the flight. I was assured each time that they would be. Needless to say we arrive at TLV to find that the bags had been left behind in Rome. Alitalia gave us some money to buy clothes, but it was only enough for sweaters and some new underwear. The bags were eventually delivered the next day, Thursday afternoon - we had not seen them since check-in on Sunday. The return trip was uneventful. In the air not bad, although some of the aircraft are somewhat tired looking and the entertainment centres do not all work - but on the ground very disappointing. We would think long and hard before flying Alitalia again.

I'm a regular flyer for the last 11 years to Italy with Alitalia (my wife is Italian). We fly 2-3 times a year, totalling up to 12 flights and often have no alternative to them, as there are few flights to Catania from our home in Luxembourg, except for summer charters. All I can say is Alitalia is generally appalling as an airline. It deserves to fold. It has no sense of customer service or responsibility to its clients. We have regular experiences of delays, lost baggage (50% of flights), old and dirty aircraft, often with damage to seats, rude flight staff, and incompetency. Our most recent flights over Christmas were typical. Flew from Luxembourg (Luxair on codeshare) to Milan and then Alitalia to Catania. Our bags did not arrive in Catania, it turns out they did not load the bags of around 50 passengers, as the plane (an MD80) did not somehow have the range to Catania with full passengers and full baggage. So they just left bags behind! The hard working and genuinely concerned lost lugage staff in Catania did their best to cope but were clearly frustrated and embarrased.

ZAGMXP return both flights operated by Air Alps Dornier 328 turbo prop on behalf of Alitalia. Aircraft a little bit worn out but clean and comfortable with great leg room. Check in and boarding at Zagreb quick and efficient, aircraft completely full. Flying to MXP, light lunch and wide selection of drinks served. No duty free goods. Flight attendant did not welcome passengers, did not show any enthusiasm and did not smile at all. Besides this, she did the rest. On return, check in and boarding at Malpensa also went smooth. Service during the flight to Zagreb was the same, in addition to this music played, and flight attendant was courteous and professional greeting and welcoming each passenger. Would reccomend and will use them again next month.

Alitalia economy-class from Toronto to Mumbai via Milan return. My first (and last) experience on Alitalia was uniformly unpleasant. The planes were terrible quality (ripped upholstery on seats, headphones not working, etc.). FAs unresponsive, unhelpful, and rude; I hesitated to ask for even a glass of water lest I be snapped at. Frankly, I wasn't sure if their behaviour bordered on racist (as the plane was full of Indians) or if their surly nature was normal behaviour. The food was inedible (on the return, I was sure to make appropriate arrangements so I wouldn't have to eat the food on the plane). Milan airport run down and shabby (the saving grace was the excellent pizza available there). The Alitalia call centre (in Palermo, Sicily) was an incredible experience. My family was returning after me so I called them to change the seating for my family (so that my two small children could sit with their mother) and the representative actually expressed exasperation, saying that the change was not allowed, and hung up on me! Thankfully when I called back, a subsequent representative was more obliging. The only positive aspect to my Alitalia were the friendly check-in staff at both the Toronto and Mumbai airports. Others have had better experiences on Alitalia on different routes. Perhaps I was just unlucky with bad planes and bad service. I can't help but wonder if they put the worst planes (and their worst staff) on the routes to India. I know Alitalia is struggling with bankruptcy but such poor quality endears it to no-one and makes one hope that they go bust as soon as possible so as not to subject others to a similar experience. I will definitely pay more next time but never fly Alitalia again.

LHR-THR,THR-LHR in Economy. Every flight was delayed by a minimum of 2 hours. No food, drink or vouchers during 10 hour wait in milan for connecting flight due to adverse weather. Inflight staff are rude, unhelpful and never present. On a 6 hours journey we were only handed a cheese stale cheese roll. Would never fly with them again and advice anybody wanting to fly with them not to. Pay a little bit extra and go with a decent airline.

MXP-NRT Magnifica Class. As a Freccia Alata Elite Plus FQTV I usually choose AZ for my business travel, but I was very disappointed by this flight. B777 with broken interiors and seats, service onboard average, load factor in business was about 50%. The worst thing I've ever seen on a plane happened to me: an AZ pilot (with the uniform although not in service), probably on transfer to switch with another ill pilot to come back to Italy, was rude. Phoning and shouting with his mobile also during take off without any problems or advice by FA, shouting from his seat to the galley when he wanted to drink or to eat, insisting the cabin lights switched on during all the flight because he had got the personal light broken, not allowing other pax to sleep. When I asked him not to be so loud, he answered me without respect, really rude and hungry as "Don't stress me please! I do what I want because I work in Alitalia and passengers don't have to tell me what to do!". What an answer!!

Magnifica class round trip to Italy from Newark - or at least that was what we paid for. For our flight to Venice, we arrived at EWR to learn that we did not have seats together. The flight was not full, so that problem was resolved; however, we spent over 30 minutes at the ticket counter to ensure that our seats were confirmed for the other legs of our trip, most especially our return to EWR from Rome. The Alitalia ticketing system is beyond archaic and the ticketing agent had difficulties getting seats confirmed. By the time we left, though, we were relieved to hear that our everything was arranged. Imagine our surprise when we arrived at the Magnifica desk in Rome to learn that we were put in economy class, on standby for Magnifica. No seats in Magnifica class were available on any alternate flights, etc. After over 30 minutes at the check in desk and another at the ticket desk, it became clear that the EWR staff made an error (and it was clear that we would not get what we paid for). The ticket agent in Rome instructed us to get a downgrade ticket in the Magnifica lounge if, in fact, we were not upgraded, and called ahead to the staff at the lounge. Naturally, the conversation to secure the downgrade vouchers took another 30 minute conversation in the lounge. So Alitalia owes us money. We have to contact Alitalia in NY for them to calculate the difference and remit. One problem. The only way you can submit a complaint or a claim is in writing - fax or mail. No human contact - and after five communications sent out over two months, no response or acknowledge. The only humans involved so far only repeat that all contact must be via writing. Clearly, a more aggressive approach is needed, and the airline has no interest in customer service at all. I would not recommend anyone travel Alitalia under any circumstances.

LHR-FCO-TLV-MXP-LHR. I've flown Alitalia a few times in the past year and so far they've been quite good. Last time with them was just before Xmas during the London fog crisis. Alitalia handled the situation well. Check-in was no longer than usual, the staff were friendly despite the stressful situation. I was concerned that I wouldn't make my connecting flight, but staff assured me I would make it. They were true to their word. Even though I eventually missed the connection, Alitalia did put me and the other connecting passengers in the Rome Airport Hilton. All of this was handled professionally with a smile. For the price I paid, I was expecting a lot less in terms of service, but I'm glad that my expectations were exceeded.

I had two positive experiences with Alitalia in business. CDG-FCO with a new A319 was very pleasant and the food was delicious. Friendly crew. Return flight FCO-EWR on a reconfigured 767 with new lie-flat seats in business. These plane was reconfigured a year ago. Alitalia is slowly going through the process of reconfiguring all their 767. Seats are comfortable. Cabin crew was friendly and professional. Food fresh and tasty. In business they give you DigEplayers with 20movies - and a nice Bulgari beauty case. Overall a great experience with Alitalia. All flights were on time.

London Heathrow to Mumbai via Milan return. Overall a fine journey. The inflight entertainment on the 767's was on the basic side (large group screens with one channel), but as the cheapest method of getting from the UK to India I couldn't complain. (Re: earlier message by Trey Turner - the earphones do work, but you need to twist one of the legs round by 90 degrees. But I agree it was very unclear that you needed to do this, and took me some time to work out! The main negative point for me was the check in at Heathrow. It only opened 90 min before the flight, with a huge queue. I was queuing 1.5 hours, and they still had a long line to process at the time check -in should have officially closed. Flight was delayed 30 mins waiting for the remaining passengers to get through the terminal. Also strange, they switched on the seatbelt signs half way through the journey from India, and never switched them off the rest of the flight. The was no turbulence however, and all passengers completely ignored the sign (it as the staff expected us to do this, they never asked anyone to sit down). Coming into land in Milan, staff didn't do a pre-landing inspection of the cabin. Quite a few passengers weren't wearing seatbelts, and their seats reclined, window blinds down etc. when we landed. Otherwise a fine journey and I would use use Alitalia again (though not necessarily as 1st choice if I had a choice of airlines at the same price!)
