I used Wakkanai Airport to fly out to Tokyo Haneda. It is located about 30 minutes
away from Wakanai city. There are only four flights per day by All Nippon Airlines - two in
and two out to Haneda and a city in Hokkaido. The three storey building is clean, modern and
spacious. Check-in is on the ground floor, second floor is the arrival and departure gates and
third floor is the viewing gallery. Gift shop and a small restaurant are on the second floor
just next to the security/departure. The airport is on an open field with no other buildings
nearby. Wakkanai Park, which the Japan Cup - sled dog racing - is held here annually in the
winter, is opposite the airport. Like most Japanese regional airports, Wakkanai airport is
very much under utilized. The ground staff are polite and efficient.
