Great airport especially now the extension is finished. Well laid out and organised. From landing to being in the car was 10 minutes! Beats the chaos at Stansted any time.

If your flight leaves first thing in the morning then don't bother! I travelled from Yorkshire to get my flight to Barcelona at 7 in the morning and got there at 1am had to "sleep" in the cold train station until it re-opened, thankfully I wasn't the only person as there was about 10 of us. Last train from Southend to the airport was around 1am and vice versa so had no chance of going back into London for a few hours to pass time. There should be something for passengers who are catching flights first thing as not everyone drives and people come from far to catch early morning flights. Was ok once I got in, speedy check in and going through security was fast too. Had a nice sleep on the plane but I wouldn't travel from there again because of the time it takes travelling and cost etc.

Flew from SEN to Dublin today and couldn't believe what was happening at security! One in about four bags passed straight through the X-ray check, so that meant about three bags in four were treated as suspicious and were searched by hand by a security woman. Are travellers through SEN so very much worse than through any other airport or had SEN a serious problem. I put my case through the machine only to discover it was in a line with five before me that had to be checked! Luckily we were in plenty of time but we were delayed 45 mins at security and we saw two people miss flights because of this! There were only 20 or 30 passengers in the security at the time but virtually everyone had their luggage searched. Meanwhile everywoman that walked through the security screen set off the alarm and had to be frisked by the same woman who was searching the bags. She just stopped all progress with the queue of bags that was building up and went to search the queue of women waiting to be frisked! Never again!

Having used the airport a number of times, I can certainly say that it is by far the best airport for short haul flights. So often you find yourself walking for miles before you reach your gate - here it's up some stairs, through security down some stairs and you're at the gate. Forget gate #98 - there are only about 6 gates. You're not made to walk past hundreds of shops - there are just three airside and the only ones you need in an airport; a cafe/restaurant, a newsagent and duty free. The lounge is basic but does the job, and given the nature of the airport and the fact that you do not need to spend long there, it is sufficient. The speed of the queues is amazing - the best I've experienced anywhere. Arrivals are amazing, the best, coming home from Dublin, took me 30 seconds from going into the terminal to coming out. I have used easyJet and Aer Lingus, and I am looking forward to flyBe and SkyWork.

I frequent airports world-wide with work and holidaying. I have never in any country I have been to been treated in the way which I was at London Southend airport. The security staff were roaring at us and pushing us as if we were dogs. They had their own rules from what I could see about carrying liquids. They would only allow one clear bag per person which had to be sealed so they had no problem in throwing out what could not fit into this one tiny sealed clear bag. This has never been "the rules" at any other airport I have been to so long as the liquids were in a clear unsealed bags and under 100ml. This whole experience unfortunately took the good out of my holiday and general perception on London as a tourist.

Without question the worst airport experience of my life. There is no option but to deal with the security staff at this airport - they are often the people who check you in and onto the plane. And they are the rudest people you will come across, as well as being incompetent. I was one of many who missed my flight today as a result of unnecessary delays from security staff. I was then threatened with being thrown out of the airport for complaining, and told they 'don't really have a complaints process.' Please avoid.

Flew to and from Geneva with easyJet and the entire experience was great. Having decided that my wife and I would rather drive to Geneva than use that well known 3rd World Airport just north of London and known as Luton, the news that easyJet had started a regular service from SEN was welcome. From the ease of car parking in the long- stay pre-paid car park, to the short walks to terminal, then to the aircraft, made departure so relaxed. On return the flight arrived and we were in our car and leaving within 25 minutes, despite having to collect baggage. Well done LON-SEN and easyJet for flying from this airport. Just thank goodness we don't need to go through Luton any more.

Again another great trip through here, nice and quiet breezed through security and all the basic facilities you need rather than trying to turn it into a huge shopping mall. All the staff were very polite and helpful and the airport spotless and now even more room with the new terminal extension. This is my third time through Southend and I will use it as much as I can in future. Just one little gripe had to wait for sometime for our baggage on the return trip which was a bit frustrating as we were the only flight in and there was only a few waiting for baggage.

Although the airport is very clean and modern it is let down by the rude and inefficient security staff who were an irritant both on departure and arrival. Passport control especially on arrival was slow and there was insufficient space in the arrival hall to accommodate everyone comfortably. To add insult to injury, the long term car park tried to charge me £50 to leave despite the fact I had pre booked and prepaid my stay in full. My advice would be to avoid this airport and look to use Stansted or Luton instead.

Not really fair to review the facilities, as the new extension is due to be opened any day, and this should alleviate the current shortage of seating in the departure area. I would, however, hope that once the new extension is open, gate 1A will no longer be used. This gate entails a walk from the departure gate to the aircraft under a semi-enclosed walkway, open to the elements on one side. I can't imagine this will be much fun on a cold, wet, windy day in February, especially as there may be a need to wait in this walkway for some time [10 minutes in our case] before boarding proceeds.

First time through SEN, ended up one way as a big storm caused me to re-route back to LGW. Very good from start to finish - ground staff working well-security perhaps a few more smiles but that section was very busy. Once through enough space for the departing flights, clear flight calls and only a short walk to the aircraft. Will use again, especially as the building work is nearly done (Dec 2013) and it will be 3x bigger. I arrived by train, 100 m platform to door. All in all will be using whenever I can now. One footnote, never seen so many careful cleaners doing a good job-the place was spotless.

I have flown from this airport several times over the last year, and every time I am impressed. This is undoubtedly the most pleasant airport I have ever travelled through, miles better than the alternatives such as Stansted and Luton. By virtue of its small size, passing through is incredibly swift, I have been on the train to London within 12 minutes of arriving! I have never had to queue for any length of time at security, and although the terminal is compact, it copes admirably even when busy and results in very fast transit times through the terminal. There's lots of building work going on at the moment, yet this has not impacted adversely on the airport experience. When the terminal extension is completed by the end of this year the airport will be even better! Could not recommend more highly, the airport deserves every success.

Recently flew Southend - Barcelona, and return, I found the whole "Southend" experience very poor. Cramped departure lounge, rude arrogant security staff, found myself waiting around for 20 minutes in a walkway to a building site, on return had to walk over 5 minutes to passport control, which had big queue's even for EU passport holders? Overall not a pleasant experience, and I will be looking towards other airports now, this airport is neither big enough, nor capable enough to operate as a low cost regional.

Charging people to drop off friends and relatives in the car park opposite the terminal is unacceptable. There is no set-down area. I always get the taxi to drop me off at the roundabout!

If this airport does not sort out its problems with Passport Control, it won't survive. My flight into Southend took 1 hour and 35 minutes which left me with 40 minutes to get my connecting train. However, it took 1 hour and 15 minutes to get through passport control. For people to have to stand queuing for 75 minutes at an off-peak time while border control sit there without a care in the world is totally unacceptable. To do this to passengers at midnight is criminal. I will go back to using Stansted - its not ideal but it beats Southend.

An ok airport. Easy check-in and through security but the departure lounge was a let down. One overpriced cafe with very limited choices and mediocre to poor food and no cleaners so was a bit messy. Calls to gates were an hour before departure even though they are literally 2 metres away meaning snaking queues all through the departure lounge. A convenient airport but don't expect any frills!

Used this airport for connecting flights to USA via Dublin and vice versa and it couldn't be any easier-parking available directly opposite terminal or train station for/from London/East Anglia opposite the terminal-check-in took minutes one floor up passport/security control then down to ground level to wait in terminal for flight and short stroll to aircraft - not that many creature comforts in the terminal but perhaps things will change when T2 opens late 2013?t Stress free environment and would use this facility for flights to USA/Europe over STN/LGW/LHR anytime because of ease of use/convenience/time and cost saving.

SEN-FAO-SEN: Well after my last visit in December I was hoping that this was going to be a repeat performance and I am glad to say it was. I was a bit dubious when we got to the airport to see 3 easyjet flights departing at the same time, as I thought it would be very overcrowded but no it was very comfortable and relaxing, it brings back the memories you used to have when you travelled through a UK airport. Security did seem to be a little short on staff who were having to skip between the load and the bag search, but they coped admirably. Keep up the good work and I hope with the new terminal extension things only get better. I will definitely travel from Southend again.

I only flew into this airport, from Amsterdam, so cannot comment on what it's like to depart from there, but the experience was the best I've had arriving in the UK. I was expecting something pretty dire, so it was a lovely surprise. Security took 5 minutes, while the bags were being loaded on the carousel next door, and we were outside in about 15 minutes tops from getting off the plane. Railway station is directly opposite, and we were on a train towards London in only a few minutes more. It was Sunday, so it was a stopping service, but it goes via Stratford so brilliant for anyone who lives near the north London Overground. It's a very intimate little airport, with a preserved vulcan bomber on show, and it's very friendly. The terminal seems to be about to double in size - the additional part looked pretty-much finished but wasn't yet open when we were there, so if it gets busy in the summer I guess that will markedly improve that. However the whole complex is brand new. Full marks from me and I'll definitely be flying through it again if I get half a chance.

Early morning departure to DUB with Aer Arann. Very disappointing, promises of London City experience have not materialised. 5 flights all leaving at the same time caused total chaos, pre-security totally disorganised, boarding card checked 3 times for no reason. Not enough seats for everyone, queues snaking everywhere. Business lounge not opened during this rush hour so nowhere to escape. One café which ran out of most of hot food, tables dirty. Not a single cleaner in the terminal, so all looked very tatty and dirty. No toilet paper in toilets. Staff running around like headless chicken. The only positive was arrival, as there were no other flights, off the plane in the car in 6 minutes.

It's okay for departures and despite being compact the departure facilities were pretty good. However, be warned that when you return the arrivals area is totally inadequate, I ended up waiting on the aircraft apron area with many other passengers waiting to get inside for immigration clearance and then the tiny baggage carousel. Arrivals area is badly planned and having to wait around outside near the airport vehicles in just not acceptable.

Parked in long stay car park 2 minutes walk from the terminal. Checked in with no fuss, security was efficient and polite and helpful staff. Southend Airport along with Aer Lingus Regional has brought my faith back in commercial aviation. Flying from here again in May with easyjet to Faro - hope it's as good.

First visit to this new terminal at London Southend (SEN) airport. The place is new and tailor made to suit low cost airlines. The facilities are basic but adequate. The place is stress free, though since the terminal is so small, I would expect that the summer will be a bit of a tight squeeze.

Rail station adjacent, about 50 minutes from London Liverpool Street. Spartan, functional check-in area with small number of check-in desks, bureau de change and cafe. Security very strict - presumably because of recent opening, everything being done by the book. I set off the metal detector arch, at which point I had to remove shoes and was given a very thorough pat-down plus had a metal detector wand waved all over me. Departure area has duty free, WH Smith and cafe. Small business lounge, which appeared to be free. Biggest problem at departures is space - if two B737/A320-type aircraft are departing simultaneously, the area will be full, so could be cramped over summer period. Will always be a niche airport, but useful for E London/Essex residents wanting short-haul flights.

Belfast from Southend and can recommend. Arrived at the airport 30 minutes before departure, breezed through security and in the queue for boarding within minutes of arrival.  Staff very friendly.
