Flying during the off season, I had a much better experience than most of the other reviewers, check-in was
fast but in tradition with other domestic flights, did not start until about 45 mins before departure. Courteous
and pleasant service throughout the airport though, fast security, spacious gate areas.

Long queues to check-in, oddly, having to take baggage off check-in conveyor belt and take it to another area
to go through to loading. Passport control was quick but that is about the only positive to this airport.
Seating was not enough, area very noisy and very dark. That alone was enough to send the stress levels
soaring. No toilet roll in any of the ladies cubicles, 80% of the loos had no seats. Two large shops, over
priced, both selling exactly the same products. Staff were the most unfriendly people we have come across.
I queued for 35 minutes in the only cafe pod open, I got 3 drinks and 3 croissants at a cost of 24 euros for
my trouble. Our experience of this airport is enough to stop us travelling to Rhodes again.

The airport facility for the higher gate departure number gates are so primitive. One over priced cafe selling
overpriced food for starters then in both of the gents toilets all of the urinals were out of service and to make
maters worse all of the cubicles had no seats, and not to mention several sinks had broken taps.

Rhodes Airport check in is a complete disaster area, despite all the work so far carried out,
so far there is no improvement. Total Chaos still.

Had to wait for baggage for quite some time on arrival, but otherwise
pretty smooth. Check-in on the way back was fast, and seating was
available (but I suspect it would not be the case in a more touristy
time than 7am in January). One drawback was lack of screens telling
which gate to go to: there was an Olympic flight leaving five minutes
before our Aegean, so boarding was simultaneous, but there was no
indication of which gate was for which flight, and I had to catch the
gate number from the announcement in Greek (sometimes English was added,
but haphazardly).

Although still chaotic, I'd say this has improved a bit since I last
used it ten years ago. Mind you, I think even a tourist airport needs a
few more seats in the departure lounge. However, my reason for posting
here is to point out that basic safety seems to remain a closed book.
The huge new plate glass windows at the departure gates have no safety
markers on them and my seven year old son who is no thug ran straight
into one. The gate staff refused to write it down as an accident or to
offer any meaningful help. Happily no real harm done, but if that's the
approach to safety front of house, how are things behind the scenes?

This airport is dreadful! It looks like a depressing 1960's or 1970's structure, and
is far too small for the amount of passengers who go through it. I even had to wait outside for a
while because the departures hall was close to capacity! I found it nearly impossible to reach my
gate for the flight home, because it was hidden through a series of doors and corridors with no
signs at all, so I ended up wandering around confused. There was very little flight information
displayed on the screens, and it was quite worrying to see nothing about my flight. The seats were all
put out of view of any information, so I had to sit on the floor for ages to find anything out
about my flight!

Rhodes Airport has changed a lot during the years. It has become more modern and still
hasn't got the facilities it doesn't need. It is mainly a tourist airport and so it doesn't need
fancy lounges or anything. The baggage handling could be a lot faster though. It often occurs that
you have to wait about an hour or two which is very normal. When departing again you have to pay
close attention to the checking in process which is just hilarious. People screaming all over the
place and you don't get a boarding card but just a sticker on a carton card with your seat assignment
on it. Summarizing, Rhodes and it's airport is just typical Greece and when you know this in advance
you'll be fine!!

In reply to Tim's comment about new 'security measures' at Rhodes, they did not x-ray ALL bags, just
hold luggage. 'No small bags' they told us as we tried to load everything. So on to the check-in
area we went, where we were free to move things from our unscanned 'small bags' into our scanned and
security-tagged hold luggage. Nor were we yet 'airside', tour reps and other non-travellers were
milling around in the confusion. Anybody could have slipped anything into scanned luggage.
Security? What a joke. Only safe place to scan luggage is as it goes airside, ie after check-in,
surely. Is this happening anywhere else?

Rhodes airport has not changed in years, and is still the same experience. When you arrive, there
are no signs as to which belt your luggage is arriving, no air con. The only thing that has got
worse is the new security measures when you arrive. You now have to have all your bags
x-rayed as you
enter the airport before you can join the long queues to check in. This is fair enough in the modern
world, but rather annoying at 3 in the morning with long queues, irritable people, and only one
x-ray
machine working. Would be a lot better if they had more machines.
But then again, you are in Greece, and it is always a refreshing change to go there and find that
the "no rush" attitude is still there. So you just sit back and accept it.
