A dreadful place. The only airport I have visited where the check-in desks are in a controlled
area, to which access is restricted until around 90 minutes prior to (domestic) flight
departure. This setup means that if you have a few hours to kill you are saddled with your
luggage and unable to make the most of the (overpriced) shops and facilities on offer.
Internet cafe must be in the running for worlds most expensive at US$15 per hour. Its slightly
more reasonable once through security (but see above - you will not have much time to use it).
For reasons unknown the entire area beyond security control smelled of vomit. A taxi for the
fast 7 mile/12km journey to town costs an extortionate US$30+. As a point of principle you can
avoid this by turning right outside the terminal and walking 100m to the bus stop, where
services are quite regular and a much more reasonable US$1.50.

No avoiding this place if flying to Manaus, which is worth a visit, but the airport is in need
of some significant help. My flight was to MIA and the check-in area was a small space, cut
off from the lobby. There were only 3 positions available and the process took quite a bit of
time. Once past security, there was a single big room with trinkets kiosk, a book kiosk that
eventually opened and a snack bar. No lounge or any other space available. The staff were
friendly but the facility was deficient for an "international" gateway.

Had to change planes here on our way from Fortaleza to Miami. Looks like an older airport
with added security equipment for international flights thrown in at random. When we left our
first flight, we had to exit the secure area, find our way to the new departure area and then
go through security again (there was a total lack of signage, or personnel, letting people
just making connections know that they did not have to stand in the longest line with others
just starting their trip there). Waiting area rather confined, with a couple of small shops
and one concessionaire selling a very limited selection of food and drinks. I would hate to
have to spend several hours in this airport, which is getting increased numbers of
international flights.

MAO is an old airport, far away from the city but with good and cheap connections! They have a
lot of security, food is expensive so come prepared - a simple burger will cost you 5 dollars
or so and internet 9 dollars one hour! Tourist information center is very friendly and helpful.

Traveled to Manaus many times, found the airport good with easy access to car park. Staff nice,
security not too long a queue, shops etc are standard airport stuff. Would recommend early arrival
and double check all documentation you need to travel. Stop to look at the turtles outside the
terminal in their own pond.

On my first trip to the Amazon, in 1998, Manaus airport was a nightmare. On my second trip the
airport had been much upgraded. The entire building had been enclosed and was air-conditioned, many
shops, some with quality goods.
