Lusaka International Airport by Tony Gerber

We passed through LUN briefly on two occasions in September, and found it to be a pleasant small
airport, with a couple of interesting features. The first one was that when disembarking from a
domestic flight, one is led into the terminal building, but the door to the main terminal is always
closed, so the person leading you has to knock on an adjacent partition wall to get someone's
attention to come and open the door. We thought that was cute. The second feature was the presence
of a coffee/cappuccino wagon in the terminal area dispensing a variety of freshly brewed coffees, as
well as freshly squeezed orange juice. We thought that was a very civilized touch, and considering
there didn't appear to be any restaurants or cafes available (that we could see), at least that
simple option was appreciated.

I have recently been in Lusaka. The airport is old but clean. The departure lounge is quite big but
it lacks more restaurants and more tax and duty free shops. It would be advantageous to change this
situation. The immigrations officers are polite and easy-going which is a further plus.

In the last 2 years Lusaka International Airport has been going through a re development programme
which has seen an upgrade in its infrastructure. The old 70' style check in counters have been
replaced and updated. The airport has received new ground handling equipment, escalators and lifts.
Having been invited on a press tour of the facility i got to see first hand what is happening. The
airport is very clean, cleaner than some more 'developed' airports I have seen in my travels.

Considering this is an airport in a poor African country, Lusaka Int'l Airport isn't that bad. The
arrival hall is rather small en dark, but it is possible to leave the airport only 20 minutes after
landing. The immigration officers ( I've only seen female ones ) are kind and easy going, and I can
say the same about the airport staff in general. The sanitary provisions are old but clean. The
departing hall is more modern ( from the late '70s ? ) and there is more space and light. There's
one bar and one shop. Just be aware of some huge leaks in the roof during rainshowers : at some
places mini-waterfalls come into being.
