HIROSHIMA AIRPORT review : 27 August 2008 : by Peter Goldsbury

I live in Hiroshima and regularly use Hiroshima Airport to fly to Tokyo Narita, on my way to Europe.
This IBEX flight leaves quite early and I usually travel by taxi from Hiroshima. Check-in and
security checks are always very smooth, but an annoying problem with the IBEX flight to Narita is
that the plane is too small to use the normal gates. So we use Gate A, walk down the stairs and
across the apron to board the plane. Umbrellas are supplied on rainy days. I would use Hiroshima
Airport more frequently when travelling to central Tokyo, but I think that the plane still cannot
beat the Shinkansen for this distance (just over 900 kilometers). It is a pain to have to travel out
to the airport, 45 kilometers from Hiroshima, undergo the check-in and security check, board the
flight and then have to travel from Haneda to central Tokyo. The journey via JR is only marginally
longer and involves far less hassle. Nevertheless, as a regional airport, Hiroshima is very good.
