Terrible! Avoid this airport at any reasonable expense. Bus ride from plane to terminal, endless security checks that are unreasonably long and confusing gate navigation. If you don't have 3 + hours to make a flight there's a good chance you'll miss it and the staff has no sympathy for putting you in a sure fail situation.

Seven passport and security checks between connecting flights. Poor signage. Interminable bus rides and long runs between terminals. Officials who don't care whether you make a connection. Baggage security screening is chaos. Things come out in random order, with empty bins interspersed. Items pulled for further screening aren't announced. You have to notice that one of your bags is in a different area, while any other carry-on's sit in the chaos. One long security line was diverted suddenly to a completely different area requiring a ten-minute walk, with no explanation given. The signs indicated different terminal letters from the one we needed. When we asked for clarification, we were just shouted at to do what we were told. Food and drink and far away from many gates. The systems are a mess, or if they are intentional, they are designed to make you miss your flight or arrive sweaty and exhausted at the last second.

Very bad airport. Endless bus rides from/to terminals, traffic jam with busses lining up to deliver passengers to terminal building. Facilities are old and tired, the ways are extremely long and uncomfortable. Avoid.

Always add more time for connecting in FRA for taking busses to the terminal from the plane. Very poor setup for travellers. They seem to care more about the stores at the airport than the airport facilities.

The staff at security control chatted to each while slowly doing their job. I was jammed there and almost lost my flight. The same amount of passengers in London or Manchester would only take less than half of the time I spent in Frankfurt airport. Even worse, unlike other international airports, the staff would not help people who have tight boarding time to pass the security control. They were just chatting and chatting.

This must be the worst airport in Europe. Long coach ride to and from aircraft. Very long queues for security (and sometimes there is a further check before the gate is reached). Restaurant facilities minimal and overpriced. If one comes in to Terminal 2 one has to take a shuttle or bus to get to Terminal 1 and the S-Bahn or Long-distance railways stations. Signs few and far between. Latest horror - one has to wait in the entrance hall before a gate is posted.

I travel through FRA at least a half a dozen times a year and have never had a problem. Only once (yesterday - 27th August 2014) was I stopped for an "explosives" check but it took no more than a couple of extra minutes. The signs are pretty clear contrary to the complaints of some others on this forum. The only "negative" is the long walk and a short trip on a train from the "Z" area for flights to and from the US and gates to other destinations.

Avoid at all cost! It's an unmitigated disaster of an airport. We have transferred twice at Frankfurt, once to Bucharest and once to Vienna and on both occasions we missed our flight. In the unlikely event you do make your connection, you can be sure your bags won't! It's a vast, confusing labyrinth of corridors, gloomy stairwells, endless checkpoints and astonishingly long queues for everything. We had 2 hours to make the connection from Frankfurt to Vienna which we assumed would be easily sufficient, mistake! We were constantly frustrated by delays, both disembarking the aircraft and a very long transfer by bus to the terminal. Trying to find our gate we got hopelessly lost in a maze of dark corridors which appeared to be for cleaners and maintenance staff where we met other passengers who appeared equally confused. It turned out our gate was at least a 2 mile walk away! The 2 bottles of Rum we purchased in Manchester airport were confiscated by rude security staff, we missed our flight and upon finally arriving in Vienna our bags had been lost. This airport is like purgatory, it's the most frustrating, inefficient, stressful airport we have ever visited without a doubt. Signage is non-existent, staff totally disinterested and the whole place is badly designed. Try to transfer at Munich or Brussels if possible.

Contrary to the experiences of many who post here, my experiences at FRA have been good to excellent. I use FRA 5 to 6 times a year, most often in transit, though sometimes arriving/departing. I find the staff unfailingly friendly and helpful. I speak a little German, but even when I use English, the staff respond in kind. Immigration never seems to take too long and, while the wait for baggage can sometimes be 15 minutes or so, the wait is not too bad. For a large, ageing airport, I think FRA does everything well. I much prefer FRA over CDG or LHR.

SIN-FRA. One of the worst airports. My friends connection flight was cancelled and his time spent there (8 hours waiting for Lufthansa to re-organize one) was a lonely and stifling nightmare. Unimpressive, concrete designs inside - ugly. Signs not clear/easy to follow like in Changi/HK. So many gates/walking was with feeling of "where is...which direction would be next". Had quite a stressful time. Opt for London/Munich if need transiting!

Unfriendly staff, sending us in all directions except the good one. That is particularly bad because it lacks a good system of clear signs. How difficult can it be to hang a transit sign, pointing in the right direction? Security is a disaster. Time consuming. No way you can get duty free bottles through security if you travel intercontinental. Impossible. I have seen many airports inside and outside of Europe but Frankfurt is definitely the worst. Avoid it if you can. And if you can't avoid it: give up all hope and be prepared to endure the misery.

Terrible experience with rude border control staff. As is now quite often the practise with a lousy airlines like Lufthansa our flight to London was cancelled and I was stuck in transit going from Istanbul to London. The border police gave me an emergency visa so that I could join my wife and 6 month old daughter overnight at the hotel. A group of 6 Chinese students were not fortunate enough to get this and got blankets and told to sleep in the terminal. Next day when we tried to board the plane a horrendous grumpy border control woman refused to accept the visa given by her own colleagues a day earlier. Had to go up to her seniors, spend an hour of unpleasantries only to be allowed to leave. Really terrible airport and I would recommend all non EU members to avoid it like the plague.

One of the worst airports in the world. It's like they took the plans for building an airport, threw them in a blender and then threw that on a blueprint. No is no logic whatsoever to anything in this disgrace of a European travel hub. Highlights include no signs for toilets, arrivals and departures interspersed, alphabetically named gates that do not follow alphabetical order, and terminals that are unfathomably separated by the runways, that cannot be crossed without renting a car.

Transited FRA twice in the last month from Rio to Barcelona (16/5) and return from Nice to Rio (31/5). Short transits both ways. Airport and security staff very courteous and quite friendly. My only gripes would be the distance between regional gates (A zone) and the intercontinental gates (zone Z), signage could be a bit clearer to find the train. The men's toilets near gate A38 were a bit grim (resembled a pub toilet on a Friday night! Didn't look like the cleaner had been recently). Near same gate I bought a bottle of water from the cafe kiosk adjacent. Disappointing that the price was a pretty steep 3.90 euro and it wasn't even Evian. To add insult the attendant then pocketed the change! But that's not really the airport's fault. Compared to Rio airport, Frankfurt is paradise.

Arrived by train into this labyrinth. Wanted to drop off the bags in storage for a few hours before check-in so we could go into Frankfurt for a bite to eat. Kept having to go up and down escalators and had to ask 2 staff members for directions before finding the signs to the baggage storage area. Arrived back to check-in and had to travel to T2 in a little automatic train with bags. More ups and downs on escalators to check-in and again to the gate. Had no problems with staff members as mentioned earlier.

Dangerous. Transited via gate D1 and the escalator had to be emergency stopped to avoid a crush at the bottom. Booked my flight from LGW to SGN at very short notice not realising it has a transit stop in FRA. Staff were surly and this terminal was handling more people than I think it was designed for. I would avoid wherever possible.

I arrived as a transit passenger, with my duty free in a sealed, tamper proof bag. You have to pass through security again even in transit. Security here confiscated all my duty free even in the sealed tamper proof bag. I had the receipt but they wanted the receipt inside the sealed bag. If the duty free shop doesn't do this how can the customer know? Major over reaction, so petty and terrible service. I will never travel to or via this airport ever again.

Absolutely the worst airport I've been to in terms of friendliness and convenience. I arrived on a United flight from SFO and had to go to Terminal B for a transfer to Athens on LH. I had a 5-hour layover so I went to Lufthansa business class lounge in Terminal B. Even though my gate and the lounge are in the same terminal, I had to pass through security. All together, from arrival to lounge to gate, I went through passport control 4 times (getting four stamps just going through Terminal B), security checkpoints 3 times (including the same checkpoint twice) and customs twice. it's the most inefficient and stupid layout for a terminal. Added to that, everyone I encountered was unfriendly. While I expect that from airport security personnel, I don't expect it from Lufthansa customer service. I asked a simple question of the check-in person at the lounge whether this particular lounge has shower facility, I got a curt and snooty reply: "Of course, this is Lufthansa lounge." I had to change my seat assignment with LH transfer desk so my wife and I could sit together, and the lady behind the counter acted as if I was a total bother to her. No one I encountered had a slight smile or any sense of courtesy whatsoever. Avoid this airport at all costs.

Flying from US for a cruise vacation and need a transfer from gate Z15 to B60 at Frankfurt. We spent entire one hour running around the airport maze to reach gate B60. My husband and I are senior citizens and each of us has one carryon luggage but this airport has endless stairs (no elevators) with no clear road map. We went up and down for 30 minutes and finally reach Gate B security check. Not sure why need security check between gates. If you are inside any gates meaning you already been checked once and everyone is clean. The security personal on Gate B are extremely rude. They did whole body search for 4 US citizens (we and two strangers in front of us) with a single hand held scanner. Each of us has to wait until the scanner was available. Just looked at previous reviews and found people had same complains since 2013. If the airport refuse to change then please just avoid this airport.

Transfer twice, Calgary to Zurich and return in last month. Could not comment on Facilities given our entire time was spent reaching our Gate. Why the need for repeated security examinations after clearing at our check-in terminal? Why passport control between and within Terminals? Evidently the concept of an internally secured passageway eludes management. Signage also seems to be a foreign concept. If you know there are multiple passengers with mobility problems or families with small children on a flight perhaps try a little harder to get to a Jetway instead of having them struggle down steps and onto a packed bus. 1960's Heathrow at it's worst. We did however find the notorious Tunnel, possibly a filled in drainage ditch with just as much charm. My wife is slightly mobility challenged. This makes endless stairs/corridors difficult and puts a premium on functioning lifts. I dare say even fully fit individuals would not enjoy the experience. Our only positive is an enormous bouquet to the staff member responsible for finding a wheelchair, when it became obvious the ordered electric cart would not come, and running us through the maze to our gate.

The long underground escalator corridor in terminal 1 has been an annoyance for years. I am sure many travelers have missed connections because of it, especially the elderly who would have to count on 15 minutes to traverse that obstacle. In addition, the passport lines are interminable. The security lines are not much better, and come with unfriendly employees.

I had a one day trip to Frankfurt and was surprised because the last time I was there my experience was not very good. But I visited the observation deck and the McDonalds and back to my terminal I drove with the Sky Train. There was no queue at the security check and I find the gate fast. Only the toilet was a bit atrocious. But at all I would recommend the airport if you travel to Frankfurt, Cologne or Dusseldorf. For connecting flights I don't like the airport.

Huge airport requires walking miles to get from gate to entrance/exit! This airport has one big advantage: once you have trekked yourself to the exit its a very fast (10-15mins) but expensive (5 Euros) S-Bahn ride to centre of town where tasty German sausages and beer awaits! I had a 3 hour stopover and this is what I did. It's a bit confusing because there is basically nothing to tell you when you've left the secure area (no customs or passport control visible) but I quite like that - reminds me I'm back in Europe! On the way back into the airport for my flight (about 11pm, one of the last flights and I cut it pretty tight) I had no problems going through security - the Germans were as always full of beans and extra friendly! In Munich Lufthansa have free coffee machines at their gates but not here it seemed, so that was a shame but overall a good experience based on the ease of getting to the city for food and beers. I think that if I had to kill time in the airport proper that I would quickly get bored however, besides walking up and down there's not a lot else to do from what I saw.

A huge and complicated airport. Schengen to Schengen connections usually work fine. Berlin to Madrid was brilliant, get off the plane walk a few gates and you're there. On the positive side at the gate you have free papers and hot beverages as well as a good view of the runway. Non-Schengen to Schengen are a completely different thing. My last connection Amman-Madrid was so bad that put me off flying again via Frankfurt. Arrived at 5am but for some reason we landed in the Schengen terminal. Could not use the airbridge and in pouring rain had to be bussed to the non-Schengen terminal where in the meantime another three/four flights had landed. The usual long lines for passport control/security where for some unfathomable reason the officer took a special interest in my binoculars then again a long walk back to the Schengen terminal. All in all almost two stressful hours. Facilities are ok and the railway station allows easy and fact access to lots of destinations within Germany but this is not enough to compensate the stress so next time I will try hard to give this airport a miss.

Part of new A+ terminal recently opened - nice, fresh looks, spacious and much improved restrooms. Ample seating at gate in the "old" A-terminal, on-time departure and upon arrival on the following day a mere 15 minute wait for the baggage from the time leaving the plane - even though the plane was parked on an apron position. in the old A terminal there are coffee/tea machine for passenger use, but not everywhere. There are even newspaper stands for when you arrive early in the morning.

I am a LH frequent traveler and use the Frankfurt airport for domestic German travel very often. I also use other German airports such as Munich, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin on a regular basis so I have a good basis for comparison. I never cease to be amazed at the back-level stage of this hub of Europe. Twice I almost missed flights because of long lines - even long lines at the baggage drop when you already have a boarding pass. Why does this mega-airport have no self service bag check? If anything goes wrong with weather anywhere, not just Frankfurt this airport seems to collapse - and there is total confusion and lines with no one managing them. This airport made me finally break down and stop checking bags. Even worse though is the security lines - the area has been redone and modernized with the result that there is more space, but the security people work in slow motion! After observing them go through their routine several times I think they are trained to go through a drill which has more steps than at other airports - at an incredibly slow pace. This airport has trained me to get to the airport well in advance so I can stand twice as long in the fast lane as at any airport in Germany. This has been going on for months and has not improved.

What an awful airport. It's huge. The signage isn't great. Checking in with Lufthansa is all automated, so it can be confusing and time consuming for the first time user. Don't bother asking any airline staff member to help you - they were rude and didn't help. Getting on to a flight is ridiculous - wait in a crowded departure lounge, then finally scan your Boarding Pass, only to be stopped just beyond the boarding gate to wait (again getting crowded), rather than let you board the plane. Arriving into Terminal 1 is even more illogical. Follow the signs to Immigration and Baggage Reclaim. Immigration is straight forward, but next is Customs, before reclaiming your bags. To get to the Baggage Reclaim, you have to continue walking beyond Customs where you'll find yourself in the Check In area of the airport. Finally the Reclaim is down into an unsecured area and, once you have your bags, walk back out into the Check In area. The whole path is convoluted and illogical.

A big disappointment, for an airport (and host airline) claiming to strive to be one of the best transfer spots. FRA is very user unfriendly if you are transferring, most of T1 is outdated, has the 70s feeling to it, and gets extremely crowded in the security areas, where long walks/rides are required, flying in from London, 1.5 hrs transfer time to another Schengen destination (Ljubljana) was barely enough with no time left to browse, which is a shame as the airport claims to be a transfer wonder. In addition, the signs can be confusing too. Munich is much more user friendly and convenient.

As a frequent Star Alliance (Lufthansa) customer in Europe, I often transit through this airport. First the good points: The shops and it's clean! Now the bad points: Long bus rides, long walks (or runs usually), long queues. Overpriced refreshments, no decent restaurants airside. Security, extremely crowded, especially morning and early evening. Don't expect respite in the Star Alliance lounges! Terrible directions and unfriendly (and often clueless) staff. On the subject of security, why must you go through again when transferring from a non-Schengen flight? Nowhere else in Europe must you do this. Do they help you when you have 12 minutes to catch your next flight? If you are lucky, they will direct you to the "Fast Lane" to stand for 30 minutes with all of the other people who also have 12 minutes too! My advice, if you are travelling Lufthansa through Europe from or to beyond then try Munich.

I used this airport as a transit on a flight from Edinburgh / Frankfurt / Moscow. My baggage along with at least 3 others were left in Frankfurt. It took two days for my baggage to be delivered to my residence in Moscow. On the return flight, I was informed by Moscow Duty Free that a purchase of gin was fine to be hand carried as it was packed and sealed by Duty Free Moscow. In the security check in Frankfort transit area, I was treated like a criminal by Frankfurt Security who confiscated the gin, called the police, subjected me to a completely over the top personal search, took my wallet and insisted it be returned through the x-ray machine whilst forbidding me to leave the area where I was being held. They were offhand, rude and lacking in personal skills. I would add that the walking required between flights is extremely long with no moving walkways. I will take steps in the future to avoid Frankfurt Airport where possible.

Not my favorite airport, ugly building, long walking distances with ridiculous short travelators, no decent restaurant in transit zone. Very unfriendly staff at security check. This is not based on a one time experience. Today I flew with Lufthansa and had a transit in Frankfurt, when boarding the flight we must scan our boarding tickets via the automated gates ourselves. For some passengers this was not so straightforward, the staff member at the gate clearly lost his nerves and was scolding these people. This is the worst airport we have ever used, I pre arranged disabled assistance for my wife but at check-in I was rudely told that we should have known there was a separate 'Holding Area' for my wife and advised it would be 10 minutes walk away. We flew from JFK to FRA to transfer to BEG. It's been several months, and I still wonder if traipsing through that airport was a bad dream, I don't understand how we made our connection. If Germany is known for it's efficiency, then this airport must be the black hole where they dump all of their 'inefficiencies'. There does not seem to be any real flow, sometimes we didn't understand if we were to go straight, or veer to the right. We walked, took a bus, went around a building (outside), stairs, stairs, walking, took a quick restroom break, where I had to wait to wash my hands while an airport staff member brushed her teeth. I would have liked to check out the shops, etc., but with all the schlepping, I didn't want to miss my flight. Ironically, I plan to travel through FRA again this January - I want to fly on the 747-800, so we'll see if it's worth it. Hopefully, since I'll be on LH through to BEG, my schlep time will be cut and I can shop.

Flew into Frankfurt from Florence, and connected to Air Canada to Montreal. We landed in Frankfurt, the plane taxied awhile before it parked on the tarmac. Deplaned to a bus, and the bus took a long run to Terminal 1. My guess is that commuter flights get relegated to the remote areas of the airport without a direct jet way connection to the terminal. We then went into the terminal and tried to find our connecting gate. The first set of monitors did not have our flight listed. So we found another set of monitors, and the flight was listed, but only Terminal 1, Gate B. But it did not say which gate, so we had to take the elevator to B, and then a series of people movers to get to B. Finally get to B, and our flight is not listed. We finally got to the gate. First, you check in with the agent who checks your passport. Then when the plane boards, you check in again with an agent who just looks at your boarding pass, and then with another agent who inputs you manually in the computer. They did not scan the boarding pass. This was very inefficient. Frankfurt is a huge airport, so leave plenty of time to get to your connecting flight. If you have to change terminals, good luck! The airport itself of modern and clean with good bathrooms. So if you have plenty of time to get to your connecting flight, and use the automated kiosk if your flight is not listed, this is not a bad airport.

Having travelled from Orlando to Frankfurt for 9 hours, we had the displeasure of encountering border control officers as we made our way to our connecting flight to England. They were very vague as to what we should remove from our bags to put in the trays for x-ray. I asked if we had to remove cables and wires and they did not answer, so we left them in as you do on US flights. They then insisted that I empty a bag containing underwear in front of them. They then took my husband into a private room while they searched his bag. Surely a bit of kindness and common courtesy wouldn't go amiss? Later at the gate, they asked over 150 of us to queue to have our boarding passes checked with our passports. We then sat down only to be asked to get up immediately to have boarding passes checked again as we boarded. It was laughable. We will not use Lufthansa or Frankfurt Airport again.

A very disappointing airport experience. Immigration processing was taken care off by a lone man who looked very unhappy and seemed like he wanted to take out his frustration on innocent travelers - really unfriendly. Once inside the terminal the walk from arrivals to departures in order to switch flights was endless and dull. It took forever to find a monitor and even longer to find out which gate to proceed to. I waited 20 mins at a customer service desk and was ignored. Finally arriving after much detective work at the right gate announcement concerning the reason the flight was delayed varied wildly from snow on the ground to maintenance problems to having to pick up the kids early from day-crew. All in all quite sub standard in terms of information and convenience. However it was spotlessly clean.

This must be the most pedantic and inconsistent airport in the world when comes to security, avoid this airport at all costs! I flew through 4 major international hubs including Heathrow and USA in a 7 day period but once I got to Frankfurt security confiscated and tested all my hand luggage. This would be fine if it was the same everywhere but it's not and this airport is one of the worst in the world for entry from another country, just avoid.

After 9 hours flying from YVR I arrived at FRA expecting German efficiency at it's best, and was surprised to find one of the most cramped, long, and inefficient airports I've visited. When we finally got off the plane we stood on the hot tarmac for 10 minutes. My connecting flight left in 1 hr 15 mins so wasn't rushed. When the bus finally arrived we took a 10 minute ride and then experienced another 10 minute wait, this time on the bus. When I finally reached the airport I was greeted by an extremely un-appealing old building with a construction filled hallway that went on for at least 2 or 3 km's. No air conditioning and it was an almost 30 degree day, but I have noticed that this is a pattern in European airports. Reached what I thought was customs but turned out to be more security, only 3 different security doors which caused a gigantic line, the scanner must have been very sensitive because I saw no one make it through without a pat down including me even though I was cleared in Vancouver. When I got through I realized what was first over an hour was now only 30 minutes, and I saw yet another queue, this one for a train. When I got off the train and through another gigantic line for customs I had only 15 minutes. After another long walk through the depths of FRA, the hallway split revealing another line, when passed through I was running I just made my flight by seconds where surprise surprise I was loaded onto a bus, And all this after a 9 hour flight. I would recommend for people to stay away from FRA if possible because it is a gigantic mess full of inefficient security and customs and long hot lines.

My 20 year old daughter was travelling via Lufthansa on her own from Birmingham to Doha transiting via Frankfurt at the beginning of July. Her connection was 75 minutes from a Lufthansa flight to another Lufthansa flight. She missed her connection and ended up having to pay for another ticket and an overnight stay in Frankfurt as there is only one flight a day to Doha. On arrival at Frankfurt the plane was met by a bus which took 15 minutes from landing to her reaching the terminal. Then had to join a deep queue to pass through security. Repeatedly asked to be fast tracked as her connection time was quite tight but was ignored. She finally got through security and made her way as fast as possible to her departure gate in terminal B only to find that her plane had departed. She had to pay for a new ticket and would need to pay for a night in a hotel. To make things worse, her bags hadn't made the Birmingham flight and were following on and on their advise waited a further 2 hours for her bags only then to be told they had gone via Dubai and would be waiting for her! No attempt was made by Lufthansa nor the security people at the airport to help my daughter catch her plane. My family have transited through many airports on our way to and from the UK since moving here to Qatar including Frankfurt on a number of occasions but since this experience, we will not be using Lufthansa ever again and certainly would avoid Frankfurt like the plague.

I have now had two transit experiences at Frankfurt am Main Airport terminal both in July 2013. I am travelling on a Star Alliance ticket so each time I want to fly in Europe Lufthansa takes me to Frankfurt. This costs me both time and money since it uses unnecessary air miles and if course one needs to factor in landing and take off time, transit time and potential delays with each stage. Now I know that you also have to factor in potential very long bus rides to the wrong end of the terminal for your individual purposes. In my case the first time both planes were parked at one end of the airport but the departure gate was at the other extreme. In the second case one of the planes actually did connect to the terminal but the walk was still very long and even in the business class lounge I was warned of this. To my mind this terminal and Lufthansa ticketing and scheduling policy serve the interests of the airline and the terminal and not the interests of the customers!

This is the most abysmal airport flown through. I was traveling with my wife and a small baby with a stroller with a tight connection. The fact that the gates for the connection were far apart are not the airport's fault. However, the overall experience at Frankfurt was extremely inefficient and caused us to nearly miss our connection. We waited 10 mins for an employee to get the stroller off the plane whereas at other airports the stroller is waiting for you when you get off the plane. Unlike other airports, given the distance to travel, no vehicle was offered to transport us to the next gate, so we walked over 1 mile (with no moving sidewalks, they were all operating in the opposite direction). Then, you continue to go up and down levels (very difficult with a stroller especially when some of the elevators are out of order). Also, some access is blocked for strollers requiring a staff member to open a gate. Finally, for an airport that is known for transfers, it seems bizarre that a passenger continually hits passport checks thus wasting time (isn't one passport check enough for a connecting passenger not even staying in Germany)? Bottom line, I would never transfer in Germany again, I would much rather use Heathrow in Europe which has proper processes for connection passengers.

Had to transfer through this airport from San Francisco and I must say it was the worst experience transfer I have had. They used buses to transfer us from the airplane to the gate. They left us waiting on the bus for 10 minutes with doors closed, then left us walking to the gate. I asked at the information if there was an automatic water machine to fill my bottle and the reply was to go to the toilets! Extremely poor signage and the staff were very rude and uncivilized. Transited this airport on return Gatwick to Sydney via Frankfurt and Hanoi. After we arrived we where given transit cards and had Business class lounge passes to star alliance lounge. We could not find lounge, very badly sign posted, eventually found it with 3 other passengers. Then was told that we could not use lounge as we are not entitled to. After myself and 3 other customers explained we were transit passengers and this was a star alliance flight she begrudgingly let us in. No PA or flight board and very limited food even though this was 2 pm in afternoon. They need to fix their game, definitely not up to the usual standard we experienced in Germany.

I've suffered more stress and missed more flights at this dump than all other airports combined, and I've been commuting weekly on business for more than 20 years. My recent trip: Plane lands and taxis for 20 minutes to some remote outfield. Can't find any steps to get off the plane. Eventually, they find 1 set so front passengers can get off. A bus arrives but it isn't big enough for all passengers. 40 minutes after landing you embark on the drive to the terminal itself, and after 10 minutes in the bus you enter the labyrinth of tunnels under the terminal building only to come to a complete halt in a traffic jams. Stagger off the bus with only 8 minutes of your 1 hour connecting time left. Left to negotiate a series of steps and corridors back to the gate you just passed in the bus. Tunnel of Missed Connections runs for about 1km between A and B gates. To get to it, you can wait for the inadequate lifts or carry your bags down about 8 flights of stairs before running. Another security check, with huge queues and another passport control. Missed connecting flight. Lufthansa don't fly direct anywhere anymore, so if you pick them, you'll suffer Frankfurt too.

I arrived with the ICE from Cologne and thought I would have enough time to work a little before departure. But then I had to pass security in Terminal 1, which is centralized for the A-gates. It took me 27 minutes even though the line was not extremely long and they do a good job in queue management by channelling passengers to the various check lines. Also, I always feel that the air is good and it feels a little too hot - anyway not a comfortable atmosphere. This time I was lucky departing from gate A18, which is not too long of a walk. On other occasions I had Gate 42 and this took a really long walk.

Missed connections seem to be more common at FRA than at other airports of this size. Signage was good in some places, extremely poor in others, but other notifications are sorely lacking. I experienced a gate change with no announcement made over the PA nor at the original gate (they admitted they only indicate this in the electronic system which you must walk up to and enter you flight number or scan your boarding pass), and hence missed the boarding call. They claimed they called my name throughout the airport, but I doubt it was throughout since it is incredibly difficult to miss the loud announcements. Security staff, as previously mentioned, were anything but courteous. Long distances and multiple checkpoints make short connections nearly impossible between airlines. Free Wifi is only available if you have a mobile phone that has international roaming allowing you to receive an SMS message. Clean bathrooms and premises, decent food choices (though pricey as all airport food is), but if you're trying to make a connection then choose another airport.

I arrived early morning from Miami and I had some extra time at the airport. A terminal one is very big and walking distances may be very long. Passport control between Schengen and non-Schengen areas was a breeze as I was the only passenger in the whole area. Arrival gate was of course some Z-gate far away and I followed signs to my next flights departure gate. Quiet border control, but I had almost the same distance to walk back to Lufthansa lounge, and then back to the gate. Always look for signs carefully as they may be a shorter route, but it was a refreshing trek after a long flight.

I was very pleasantly surprised. The airport was very well labelled so it was no problem finding the terminal for my connecting flight. The security lines were quite short, the personnel manning these were very pleasant and helpful. The bathrooms were extremely clean and the food stalls had lots of interesting things to try. Frankfurt takes my vote over Paris or London for connections through Europe.

As Jan said of security; "horrible attitude, slow, intimidating, no consideration for travellers on tight connection. I don't expect to be treated like a celebrity but a minimum of respect and decency would not be outplayed". There is nothing I need to add to that! All other staff have been friendly and helpful, but the security personnel definitely need some training to remind them they are dealing with ordinary people going about their business, not convicts in a prison.

Once through, had to navigate many corridors to find our departure gate. Everything took far too long and we missed our flight. Airport itself is worn and tired, bathrooms very small and old, limited food options past security. Everything about airport was worn and dingy.

Bizarrely designed airport that grew from an earlier, not very rationally conceived labyrinth to its present colossus of corridors - be prepared to encounter others like yourself wandering lost, out in the outback areas of the connecting hallways. Don't ask security for directions, they're just there to provide the discipline. One rushes from arrival to departure gate and finds almost an hour has gone by, and suddenly you are once again required to go through security. Once they locate your luggage, you may be able to get it in a day or two.

Then prepare yourself for a long march to your gate to find out either that the gate just closed or that instead of the 3 available entries just 1 is open. If you arrive and want to get your baggage, be prepared for a long walk. No need to hasten, though, as it will take ages for baggage to be delivered. Count 2 hours for a speedy operation. There are some very negative comments posted here. Sadly, I have to agree with most of them. I passed through a couple of times in December. A lot of walking is required. I am not sure that this is because it is big terminal, it may just be that it is not logically laid out. As many have complained. The queues or security can be incredibly long and the staff seem to work very slowly. I also had some problems with the poor signs - that adds to the distance you have to walk after back tracking a few times. Finally, the LH business lounges are pretty poor. So all in all, not a very good experience and well behind what the likes of Heathrow is offering.

Not just long queues, but what must be the most badly organised security checks I've been through. Not enough trays, very slow scanning and a body search involving taking your shoes away for a few minutes by officious and disinterested staff. Must have run half a mile to the gate be told that the flight had just closed and to go to the another long queue at the Lufthansa desk to rebook. No room on the next flight so had a 3 hour wait. I had a connecting flight at Frankfurt bound to SFO on Dec 9, 2012. Flight was cancelled last minute along with 350 other flights. There were no PA announcements or direction where to go and what to do for rebooking. Lines were forming everywhere, but not clear for what. After 8 hours waiting for hotel/taxi voucher some people manage to go to a hotel but for the most there was no hotel and had to stay on the line until the check ins reopen for booking at the next day at 5.30 am. This was the case for everyone, no priority for families with kids or elderly. On the next morning Dec 10th seemed as Frankfurt airport got it together. We managed to catch a flight, but I want to leave a very strong message here that If Frankfurt/Lufthansa want to stand for a premier airport/airline there is a need to review its procedures and policies. Frankfurt airport was not a safe place to be at on Dec 9th.

Although I arrived on time from Singapore, I missed my flight connection to Amsterdam because the queues at security were extremely long and slow and the person from security services didn't allow me on the available fast lane through security, although I had only 20 minutes left to boarding time. After more than 35 minutes queuing I finally made my way through security, then had to run down the long alleys with my hand luggage to show up at the gate 15 minutes before departure. But as they use buses at some of the gates to transfer you to the airplane, the buses had already left and the gate for Amsterdam was closed. Lufthansa made my day again by booking me on the next available flight 2 hours later, but Frankfurt airport didn't do a good job here: this really was unnecessary. So in case you need to travel via Frankfurt and you have the choice between connecting flights, then take your time to save yourself the hassle as the personnel might not help you.

A curate's egg of an airport, offering a mixture of the excellent and the unsatisfactory. There is a lot of trekking involved, especially in the connections between Terminal 2 and the DB railway station. This station is very handy if you're using Terminal 1, but getting to and from Terminal 2 involves a bus shuttle, for which you can wait a long time outside the building with minimal shelter. The buses used have not been well adapted for pax carrying heavy or bulky luggage. The bus journey itself takes between 5-8 minutes, according to direction of travel. Surely there's a better way.

The airport is confusing, has long walks, is cold, has unhelpful staff and is in need to an upgrade. The interior tram was broken causing passengers to be re-routed by staff who didn't have a clue. Went through yesterday for a connection from a Budapest to Manchester (UK). Landed in A and took off from B. Dreadful experience. It's as well there were no queues at security as I would have missed my connecting flight. It will take several days to recover. I will avoid Frankfurt in future.

This was the first time I travelled through Frankfurt with our new baby. It really hit home how family- unfriendly the airport is. I spent most of my time in the Z gate area, but travelled there from the B gate area. When travelling, we put our baby in a regular sized stroller. Apparently to stop people from using carts on certain lifts and moving walkways, the Frankfurt airport has installed barriers. Unfortunately, unless you're using a very thin umbrella stroller, you are blocked by the same barriers put up to block luggage carts. My wife and I had to lift our stroller over a high barrier simply to get to the elevators allowing us to travel from B gate to Z gate. Not helpful! Another family unfriendly aspect of Frankfurt airport is the location of the ubiquitous Camel Smoking Rooms. If you want to light up, that's fine. But the Camel Smoking Rooms are located directly adjacent to the lifts. If you have a child, you know how important the lift is when you're using your stroller. Even though the rooms are ventilated, a lot of smoke and stench comes out. At Z gate there are two baby-rooms for changing and cleaning your baby. On my recent layover in Frankfurt, I stood outside one of the rooms for a very long time waiting for it to be unoccupied. Presently, a janitor came by who asked why I was waiting for a closed baby changing room. Astonished, I searched fervently for a sign mentioning that the room was not in service, and found none. I'm leaving out quite a few problems that were more adult oriented to simply focus on what could be improved for families. Move the Smoking Rooms away from lifts and baby rooms, and widen the cart barriers to allow strollers to pass.

SQ25 we had a stop over at FRA. The transit was unremarkable. No need to recheck through security, transit around B gate. Time for a snack and children playground. Easy. The SQ26 was different. This time we had to go a long route through connecting flight security with the long lines. Some passenger were confused because it looked like you were walking to the immigration area. Time consuming. T1 is clean with good transit facilities. Constructing has stopped and that makes things much better.

Transferred twice at Terminal 1. The ceilings were low, seating area was plentiful but it felt cramped otherwise. Some of the bathrooms were awful, although luckily, I found a decent one (which wasn't clean still) near the gate which was tucked away, so there was less traffic which meant better condition. Gate area had a nice little restaurant which offered decent options, and a shop with souvenir items, some snacks and drinks. Second return was a horrible experience. Security was chaotic, low ceilings once again made it feel really cramp. Plus side is that the security agents were efficient, polite and friendly. Good signage though, both English and German. I will try to avoid FRA in the future, especially Terminal 1.

Recently transited LIS-FRA-MEX. I had an 1 hour to transfer and I hated the long distances, the dreadful "rainbow tunnel" and the stairs connecting the Schengen with the non-Schengen area. I was lucky and I found no people at migration queue, otherwise I could have missed my flight. Waiting lounge was crowded and claustrophobic, restrooms in bad conditions. Boarding was chaotic. On the good side, staff are polite and always try to help you. This is an airport to be avoided, better try MUC, AMS or ZHR which are excellent.

Flew through Frankfurt twice in last month for connecting flights. A reasonably nice airport experience other than the prices, over 9 euros for a small bottle of water and packet of Pringles. Outrageous. Positive, smoking rooms. If LHR wants to stay ahead of the game as a transit airport it seriously needs to consider if people would perhaps choose other routes if they fancy a smoke in transit. All the main transit airports in Europe and the Far East have them, Singapore having one that is actually outside surrounded by butterflies!

Recently flew through FRA with Lufthansa from SFO and then connecting to Budapest. I am not sure if the whole airport was like this but the 2 Lufthansa terminals I was in were terrible. I have flown through FRA on other airlines in the past and have had much better memories. You would think that the home airline (Lufthansa) would have the best terminal facilities but that is definitely not the case here.

Had no problems negotiating this airport in transit from Dublin to Bangkok. I was pleasantly surprised. Just like another reviewer said follow the signs, it's not rocket science and we reached at our next gate with ease and in plenty of time. Some people seem to complain about the most minute niggles, I has the same experience after reading reviews of Mumbai airport, only to find yet again transfers were smooth. Having travelled through many airports Frankfurt was one of the more pleasant journeys.

Great experience. I put it down to being well prepared and reading in advance the do's and don'ts and tips. Flew in 6pm from Seoul terminal B. Long walk but if an overweight 60 yr old woman travelling solo can, then anyone can! Next flight was 7.55am next day. Went to check in and got my own boarding pass and Checked bags in that night while it was quieter and had overnight bag. Next morning at peak time I did not have to queue and it was smooth through security. Through the whole experience I stopped and asked if I didn't know where to go or what to do. I approached with a smile and an 'excuse me' and I received courteous service.

Recently we had to transfer through Frankfurt airport and it was a very frustrating experience. I will never do that again! The airport itself is very confusing, no help from staff, few seating areas and you are running from one end to another. If you don't have your boarding pass for your transfer you have to go through a line-up for passport control, go out of the security area to be sent from one counter to another. After you get your boarding pass, you have to go back through another line-up to passport control, then another to security check and we still had to line up to the gate for boarding pass check and another line-up for actual boarding. Not something you want to do after 9 hours of travel.

For a modern European airport hub this airport falls very short - reminds me more of a hospital with no lighting or color anywhere just grey cement and flooring. Arrived from DEL to transfer to IAH, spent endless time walking with no shops anywhere. Arrived at terminal C and there is one duty free shop before security. After security and TSA pre-screening there is nothing but gates. The lounge for he A380 is a joke - worst I have seen anywhere for C class passengers. Many parts of the airport need repair with cords hanging from ceiling throughout. For a better experience try T5 at LHR or even CDG.

Arriving from BKK, passport checking and security check in Transit took almost two hours. Very unfriendly staff. Being even more late now, we were running for 20 minutes to our gate (it was changed shortly before). Lufthansa staff told us the flight had boarded. Transfer Desk staff very helpful and managed to get us on next flight. FRA is a very big airport, with long walking distances, few facilities but lots of unfriendly staff. We will avoid FRA and Lufthansa in the future.

We arrived at Frankfurt airport having been delayed for two hours by the crew of our Lufthansa flight being "stuck in traffic" (strangely none of the passengers had the same experience). We were told by the flight crew as we landed that we should contact the ground staff for further information on connecting flights. Unfortunately there were no staff to be found to provide the said information in arrivals. We had very few minutes to spare to catch our connecting flight to Brazil and so made our way to the relevant gate with great haste. There were no queues through security but the rudeness of the security staff was quite unbelievable. Two of our group were told to take our bags into a side room for further search. It was explained to the staff that we were about to miss our flight. This had the effect of making them slower. Swabs were taken of the bags and then they walked away leaving the bags open and not saying anything. When we enquired whether we could now go, a shrug indicated that we could. After charging through the airport as fast as our legs would carry us we made the flight as the doors were closing. Unfortunately, our suitcases didn't make the journey. Thanks to Tam airlines, they did catch up with us 3 days later. I will avoid Frankfurt in future.

Although a busy Saturday morning quick LH-baggage drop and no wait at security check.

Just recently transferred through FRA and was amazed at the difference in staff attitudes - people were either friendly or went out of their way to be nice. While the airport's layout can't be changed and is a negative, the improvement in staff attitude has made this a much more pleasant airport for transfers.
