Good airport that does it's utmost to service it's customers. I've been there from way before the fire and after the fire when they had beerhall tents to handle passengers and luggage. They have been less fanatical in introducing more airport security after 9-11. The hotels at the airport are reasonable and clean. The only problems are their waiting area for cars picking up passengers which is too small. The train connection looks great but services could be more frequent. And finally people should not mix up lousy Dusseldorf regional in Weeze with the quality that Dusseldorf International has to offer.

I can only agree with the 2 previous comment. I arrived at security with my liquids in a non Dusseldorf airport standard plastic bag. I was told to buy one from the machine for €1. I did not have a euro but was allowed to take one item though without a bag but lost the other two items. Beware Dusseldorf standard plastic bags are mandatory though it appears they do not use the proceeds of selling them to the benefit of the airport in general. Also I have never come across this at any other airport in Europe.

Previous commentators are correct about the attitude of the security staff at DUS. I had a pot of jam confiscated as it was over 100ml, despite this not being a problem at security in Hamburg two hours earlier. Airside facilities in the non-alliance pier were spartan, and the entire place looked as if it had not been uprgraded since the early 70s. The Lufthansa pier is slightly nicer.

This is the worst large German airport. I've been to Düsseldorf 3 times this year and it's always been a disgusting experience. While the same hand luggage (purse and laptop + 'security plastic bag' was never a problem in ORD, LHR, FRA, JFK or MUC, in DUS these guys at security take their job too serious. If it's not the size of the laptop they complain and you have to check it in, because the guy says this kind of laptops are not allowed on board (great, if your laptop case is the only luggage you are carrying and you know it will arrive completely destroyed and strange because why is the same laptop allowed in LHR or MUC but not in DUS?) then it is your deodorant, your perfume or just the little hole in the plastic bag. They always find something to make you throw away part of your luxury cosmetics or just to annoy you. Today I boarded a flight to Munich, leaving behind my deodorant and my shampoo, because the security lady said they are not allowed onboard. We started boarding at gate B80, and had to go down 2 floors without an elevator or escalator. Then we went on a bus, that stopped 100 meters later and we had to go up 2 floors - again without elevator or escalator and then down 1 floor again to get to the finger to the airplane. I asked what was the reason for this stupid transfer, and the answer was, that there were passengers arriving from Non-EU countries, that where not allowed to access the terminal directly, since this was a European law. I wondered why international flights from the US or Asia can access the terminals directly in FRA, LHR and MUC but not in DUS. I definitely hate Düsseldorf Airport. They want to be a big international airport, but are still a peasant airport. Even Frankfurt, which is certainly far from being a nice airport is better than DUS. The only positive thing about DUS is that you still can smoke. I certainly will avoid DUS airport as far as possible.

It is a while since I used Dusseldorf airport but it struck me as a well planned and efficient airport with a good balance between retail and transport needs. The public transport links are excellent and good value for money.

A lovely little airport, which I happen to use frequently during visits to an attorney. I have nothing bad to say about the place as it is always clean, staff are friendly and efficient and I have never experienced a single flight delay out of the place. If only the same could be said for Frankfurt.

Had the pleasure of passing through DUS on SWISS and I must say that it is a fine airport. Nice shopping arcades, but be advised to do your shopping before you proceed to your gate, as there is nothing past passport control.

An odd mix of modern architecture and third-world facilities. Impressive general layout, car parks close to terminal buildings. However, whilst this is supposedly a non-smoking facility with designated smokers' zones, the latter are simply dozens of areas identified by a "smoking zone" sign and no physical segregation. The result is cigarette smoke all over the place. Also, there is no post office in the entire airport - must be a world first. Finally, despite all the wonderful engineering, the arrival procedure for our EK flight was decidedly third-world style. Having docked at one of the air bridges, passengers - instead of entering the terminal via the air bridge - were forced to walk down onto the tarmac, get onto a bus and literally drive around the corner to immigration. Ridiculous.

A very nice airport. Enjoy it everytime. Excellent viewing decks. Only drawback - the Skytrain between the rail station and the terminal still out of service. There is a shuttle bus but it's combersome and the drivers don't really seem to care much about getting pax to the terminal in a hurry. Looking forward to the day the Skytrain finally operates.

Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS) is a very nice, new and modern airport from an architectural point of view. This airport has a single passenger-terminal, which in itself is divided in three concourses - A, B and C. The terminal features a very nice shopping-street named "Airport Arcades", which is situated directly beyond the Check-In-Desk on the Departures Level and therefore the "Airport Arcades" are open for everyone. The only setback here is that the Shop Quantity are smaller than on such airports like LHR, ZRH or CDG. But the Prices here are fairly OK. Food and Drinks are relatively expensive. The passenger signs within the terminal is sometimes very confusing and irritating.

Very impressive airport froman architectural standpoint. It also benefits from efficient layout and recently added new shops which used to be a major reason for complaint in the past. Excellent railway links with frequent high speed services and monorail link to terminal. Recently introduced LTU service to JFK at excellent value when booked reasonably in advance. New Delta service to Atlanta to be introduced in April. Great future for expansion ahead! A great example of a new modern airport!

One of the most efficient airports in Germany. Everything is clean and functional. It looks large but in fact it isn't thanks to the steel/glass design. There's one enormous departure hall with about 200 counters side by side but it doesn't take more than 5 minutes from one end to the other. Signs to the main exit could be bigger though. At least Lufthansa check-in is quick and trouble-free, security surprisingly moderate and rather unmotivated. Departure lounges don't offer much to waste time - could use some more food outlets and shopping facilities in general. Connectivity to the city and surrounding areas is organized via public transport to/from the terminal (S-Bahn). At least until Main station it works efficiently and regularly - from there on mileage may vary.

A wonderful airport! Travelled DUB - DUS and the difference between the two airports are SO clear! Dusseldorf is so quiet with lots of space and clean, modern facilities.

16 September 2005

I have to say that it is one of the best airports - clean, modern, fast and compact albeit with enough shopping and food facilities. Parking is easy and fast, close to the terminals. Security and passport control are fast and after its renovation which was prompted by a fire incident a few years back it is reported to be one of the safest.

29 June 2005

I have travelled through Duesseldorf airport twice every year for the last 4 years and I think it is the safest, most spacious, intelligently designed airport in Germany. Frankfurt is so big, you need to plan for a 'day trip' to get from one terminal to the other, Berlin is a mini-version of an airport, Munich is not much better. The observation deck and train connections as well as the Skytrain are the best anywhere in the world.

One of the most impressive airports for me. Extremely large windows, it has. It gives me a very fine view. Everywhere I can find clean chairs, windows and toilets. Kind of check-in counter, fast and efficient security check. Very nice.

I live right in between Amsterdam (AMS) and Dusseldorf (DUS) airports, being able to choose the best of these two for each flight. Over the last two years I developed a clear preference for DUS, finding it one of the best airports in Europe. I now use it about a dozen times a year. Unlike other posters I always find customs and security clearance a breeze, with friendly staff. And because of its relative small size (compared to AMS anyway), distances, parking, flight delays and luggage wait times are among the best in the world. No big shopping mall, but just enough shops and restaurants to pass some time. I agree with some posters that the fact that shops are before customs and security takes some getting used to. Once cleared, there is hardly anything. Some of the disadvantages -- and the reason to go to AMS sometimes -- is the lack of long-haul connections. The all-business LH DUS-EWR/ORD flights are great, but not many more intercontinental flights are offered. DUS-EWR (on CO?) would be a great addition, as would a DUS-SIN or BKK connection.

I find DUS is one of the nicest airports in Europe but really really slow when it comes to go through security. And then the lack of shops after security is also quite shocking as if your flight is delayed you are just bored there.

23 April 2004

I find Dusseldorf quite a good airport, but it is lacking in some respects. I find security is slow: as is access to the airside area. Shops and restaurants are simply terrible once you get through to the boarding areas. Check in was swift though: it's very clean and there is plenty of space.

I've flown out of DUS twice this year and I found it really exhausting and a horrible experience. Security personnel incompetent, talking about the latest football results.  After the return flight, we were driven around apron for half an hour, immigration nearly took twice that long, while only two out of 6 counters were filled. The baggage took more than 20 minutes to arrive and we had to wait another endless while until the skytrain arrived to take us to the railway station.

I think the new terminal is a huge improvement over the old terminal. The Germans really do love glass and steel don't they? Check-in is quick and hassle-free, security was thorough but not obtrusive. 99% of US "security" guards could learn from DUS. Good connections on S-bahn and German Rail. Food a little on the pricey side, but still within range of most major airports. I really do wish LH would start regular trans-Atlantic flights. I don't mean the all business flights they have to EWR or ORD.

22 November 2003

I flew a couple of times from Dusseldorf and everything went extremely smoothly! One flight was DUS-Milan on Alitalia (business class); absolutely no problems with check-in, everyone very helpful, nice lounge. Another was DUS-FRA-ORD, on AA business class, and again everything went off without a hitch. The returns to DUS were smooth as well. Parking was easy as was the S-bahn connection back to where we were living in Germany.

28 August 2003

I would agree with Steve Fenton. DUS is a complete joke from check in, to security, to eating and shopping. Not one decent cafe or place to eat in the airport. the Tax free shop only sells chocolate and perfume. What about selling German Beer? My opinion Dusseldorf should be avoided I will use Cologne-Bonn next time.

Total chaos and disorganisation. Allow one hour from check in to the gate. The security control (which I whole heartily agree with) is a total bun fight. Finding the lounges is a joke and I actually got sent back through immigration to be told "no" its on the other side and then spent another 45 minutes going back through security.
