Brisbane is my home airport and am not a person to usually complain but my recent trip to Auckland left me with a bitter taste. Flying business class on EK had checked-in online and with carry-on only went straight to security and immigration. No priority security lane open at 6am but at least 50-60 people in front of me, many of them being apparent first time travellers as it took ages to get through. Finally made it to immigration only to be told that I had no right to line-up in the express line as I did not have the express card from the airline. Told staff that I had checked-in at home and showed my business class boarding card but no luck so off I went behind the previous 50-60 passengers and wasted another 30 minutes. Instead of being through security in the usual 10-15 minutes it took me nearly an hour which is precious time as I needed to get some work done in the lounge. Very disappointing.

The facilities and general condition of the airport is shocking. The international terminal has one food outlet open at 9pm! Transfer between terminals is poor. No bus or train after 10pm?Definitely wont be transiting thru this airport in a while.

The difference between the domestic and international terminal is like chalk and cheese with the international terminal far superior to the domestic. I would use the domestic about 6 times a year and the international about once every 18 months. With the domestic terminal not happy with the parking and drop offs, general condition inside the airport, choice of food outlets and like most people the flight delays. In the last 12 months none of my flights have taken off or arrived on time. Longest delay was 90 minutes. For my next trip if it is to Melbourne or Sydney thinking of flying from Gold Coast (about 60 minutes from where I live) or Sunshine Coast (about 75 minutes). With the average delay I have experienced it would be quicker. Also parking far cheaper.

I have been using this airport for international and domestic flights several times a year for the last 25 years. There have been some improvements during that time, particularly in regard to the incredibly discourteous security, Immigration and Customs staff. Last weekend was shocked that my daughter was refused hot water at a coffee shop to warm up a baby's bottle. Had a very strange, surreal exchange with the coffee shop manager which bordered on open hostility. Went to the baby care room, no hot water facilities, dirty, smelly, unhygienic. Terminal inside was reasonably clean but food and beverage operators rarely clean up their tables so you have to do it yourself. Outside the terminal was dirty and smelled of urine. $4 for a luggage trolley, $16 for less than an hour's parking. An airport with such potential but there is a lot that lets it down.

We travelled Singapore Changi to Auckland, en route (transit) at Brisbane, on both legs. At the transit security check, there was a long queue and only one conveyor belt and one x-ray machine. Worse, it was manned by a team of slow security personnel who were rude, petty and had no idea of what can or cannot be brought in. They confiscated my daughter's rice milk without any explanation or questions asked. We had a doctor's letter explaining our daughter's condition and furthermore, we were aware that exceptions are made for baby food (never had any problems in Heathrow, Zurich, Changi). Our demand for these to be returned were ignored and instead we were greeted by some offhand remarks. We finally got the milk back after their supervisor came to our rescue.

Its ridiculous there is only one restaurant open for departing passengers before 6.30am. Surely people who have had to get up in the small hours for early check in could expect not to queue forever for a hot coffee and or breakfast at that time of day. Even worse, the food was terrible. Airport managers need to get with the times and not cater as if its a small town domestic airport.

What a disappointing introduction to Australia this is, especially after departing from a superb airport like Singapore's Changi. Dirty carpets in the transit hall, grubby walls, filthy toilets, broken toilet seats -very below third-world standards. The departure area of the transit hall is not quite so run down, and some effort has been made, but toilets dirty and housekeeping poor. I would not have expected this standard in an International tourist destination.

Avoid this terminal at all cost, I have never experienced such a pitiful airport as this. Disembarking I walked the aerobridge - maintenance badly needed. The toilets on both arrival and departure levels are filthy. Unreadable flight Information Screens that scroll every 2 mins, on arrival and departure level 1980s TV's for gate entertainment. Boarding lanes were made by these outdated, mismatched tensa barriers, broken and displayed throughout the terminal. Boarding gates were filthy and dust was evident. The so called express lane was a joke, crew, airport staff, assisted passengers all channelled into one lane - waste of time. Food and Beverage outlet seating area filthy and overcrowded. Please take some ear plugs if you don't want to listen to loud screaming constant announcements. A major rethink is needed at this airport.

I had the pleasure of flying out of BNE International on Dec 3. Since my first International flight back in 1985, I have only flown into and out of Oz from SYD and DRW (where I used to live). It just seemed so airy and laid back with no queues either at security (the fast track wasn't operational, but there seemed to be no need for one), the shops I visited or the TRS booth. The Qantas Lounge was good again with plenty of space and reasonable selection of refreshments. Everything is also much more compact than SYD and I would love to use BNE Intl more often, unfortunately most of my flights are with BA who don't fly into BNE. Of course I may have struck the airport on a quiet day, it was a Monday lunchtime and that may have been to my advantage.

I have used Brisbane airport for many years as a local and while its quite functional, it just has no character or atmosphere compared to some of the other terminals but the worst part by far is the food choices available. Like all airports the prices are simply ridiculous for the rubbish on offer but as a state that has so much great local produce, how is it possible that the very basic food court options are all fast food chains or pre packaged bad sandwiches. No wonder people feel bad during and after their flight. A better food experience would encourage guests to spend more and enjoy their pre departure time much more.

Being a BNE local, I use domestic frequently. Always a stress-free, easy check-in, security staff friendly enough, pretty basic shopping/eating/drinking airside, but decent enough if you're only waiting half an hour for a flight. Usually, I catch the Airtrain, which, now running times have been extended, is very convenient if travelling alone. Cheaper and easier to get a cab if there's 2 or more, though. International is nothing special Again, easy check-in, clean, friendly staff, but for shopping/dining one would expect a bit more to impress o/s visitors. Last flight in a few weeks ago has been better than last year. Customs staff are much friendlier and it was much quicker. However, baggage claim area is in desperate need of an update, has the feel of a 90's office with cheap carpet and fluoro lighting. BNE has massive potential to serve as int'l gateway to Aus for Asia, especially with the shabby state of SYD and MEL, just needs that extra Wow! factor that all Aussie airports seem to lack. My advice? Take some architectural queues from Madrid, Incheon or many other major hubs, integrate cheap, quick and frequent public transport and BNE would be transformed, and, to some extent, probably Brisbane as well!

SYD-BNE-SYD. Haven't been to Brisbane for couple of months, Brisbane domestic airport really changed. Construction for the car park finally finished - worth for the wait. The new walkway between domestic terminal, train and car parks are fantastic, completely new feeling for the airport. Security check area at Qantas has changed as well, there is dedicated business and premium passengers line. It is very easy to drive to airport or go by train as well.

Nice enough, except for the fact that almost all the passport control desks, coming and going, are unmanned: what is the point of that early in the morning when five international overnight flights arrive, as they always do, at pretty much the same time ? Ludicrous queues as far as the eye can see, but what a fine array of unmanned control desks. Just as undermanned (though the concentration of flights is less, so it is not so bad) leaving. Really rather unimpressive.

Brisbane international airport departure terminal was a pleasure to use. Check-in was smooth and unlike T3 at Heathrow you could easily see where to go. Lovely shopping area and Qantas business class lounge was fantastic. Coming in was just as good an experience - friendly staff in the quarantine section helped me throughout without much delay.

It has been 6 years since the last time I was at Brisbane Airport and they still seem to be doing the same redevelopment! Signage is not good at the moment and somewhat confusing as to location of the coaches/buses from the domestic terminal. The domestic terminal is decent enough but staff could be a little more helpful. The transfer bus from domestic to international could be a little more frequent for those on tighter connections. The international terminal is a fairly typical modern airport terminal.

Very disappointed by airport staff especially security in departures. Brisbane is a clean, friendly city and unfortunately the airport does not show this is any way. After travelling Portland-San Francisco-LAX-BNE and faced with a 13 hour transit I was stuck at the airport. With advice to clear customs, I was gladly directed to facilities by information staff. As there is nothing landslide I decided to go airside and find somewhere to relax. I came down the elevators and was abruptly pulled aside to weigh my bag. This women was intimidating and rude by all accounts, ripped the bag out of my hand and pushed me towards the lifts and told to check it in. I was unable to explain I was carrying medication which was exempt. After explaining I had medication that had been cleared along with the relevant paperwork I was told I was a liar. Also no Gluten free options for food and nowhere for travelers with long transits to go. Brisbane deserves some staff training and a little bit of the Brisbane culture!

On arrival from LAX flight, lining up for customs was a bit of a shambles - there needs to be more visible staff questioning and directing people to the appropriate lines. Customs staff were friendly however, and the process took about 45 mins to get through. There were 4 international flights arriving at the same time so the wait was fine. At the Virgin/Qantas ground floor domestic transfer desks - the baggage travelator had stopped and we had to take all our bags with us on either the T bus (operated by Qantas) or TAXI to the domestic terminal. This was not the airlines fault but Brisbane Airport's. Toilet facilities in domestic airport near food court were outdated - sinks and seats clean but floor tiles grubby. International offers lots of shops - prices similar to other INT terminals and is bright and light.

We flew in and out of Brisbane Domestic Airport this week. Arrivals was fine, but I think it is a ridiculous scam to charge $4.00 to use a trolley. (I have never seen this in any airports I have travelled in.) Coming back, the terminal temperature was very hot, which I guess is to make people thirsty and need the food outlets to pay for drinks. Toilets were clean and tidy and there was plenty of space and seating.

For domestic flights this airport is fine, but everything falls apart if you need to connect from domestic-international or international-domestic. I don't understand why they built the international terminal so far from domestic. You have to wait for the T-bus. Some passengers get a free ride, and others get charged $5. I had a 1 hour 45 minute connection from domestic to international and my checked luggage didn't make it to the international flight. On return, there were three incoming international flights and only 4 immigration desks open for non- Australians (the majority of passengers). There are plenty of desks, but most were closed. Having waited for 30 minutes to get through immigration, the luggage still hadn't arrived. It took me another 20 minutes to get through customs and I didn't even have my bags searched! Qantas have the dumbest system going. Even though your bags are checked through to your final destination and you have a boarding pass, you have to check in again at the domestic transfer desk. If you don't get there an hour departure, you won't make your flight. It's chaotic. I spoke to an agent and was allowed to jump the queue, but it just doesn't make sense. If you have a tight connection, take a taxi to the domestic terminal where you can check your bags 30 minutes before departure.

Despite recent renovations the International Terminal has very few shops, is overpriced on everything and the seating provided is spartan and uncomfortable. The jet ways and air-stairs are 'dated' and lack any modern decor. I feel for international visitors who are confronted with this and what their first impressions of Australia must be. The new passport chip system is poorly set up and confusing to travellers as to what their obligations are for getting through Customs.

Very disappointed by BNE, given that Brisbane was the nicest, friendliest, cleanest, and most modern city I visited in Oz (which covers all of them except Perth). The airport, on the other hand, is a bit shambolic, with poor organization and surly staff both behind the counters and in security. Case in point: I politely asked for a manual inspection of my film, since past experience has taught me that all it takes is one mis-calibrated machine to destroy weeks of photography. The response was hostile, and wound up with several security people lecturing me about acting suspicious, not reading the sign that said it was safe, telling me my film case would protect them from radiation anyways, and then finally putting it through the x-ray machine just to prove this (and not even apologizing when doing so revealed that the film case was NOT radiation-proof)! Shopping and food options are very limited, and some gate areas have plenty of space, while others overflow into narrow passageways, blocking traffic. Briz definitely deserves a better terminal - and much better staff!

I agree that customs/security can be an absolute shambles when it is busy and what is the point of putting travelators in when they only go for 100 meters in a 1 km long terminal?

Arriving back on a Friday evening we joined a 100 mtr+ queue waiting for customs. No planning, no guidance, to structure - almost every man for himself - make you own queue and get there anyhow. Staff were pleasant enough but after standing for 45mins was a bit much. Eventually the overhanded intensity of checking was dramatically dropped and after a quick verbal check many passengers were allowed to pass through. Hardly a good, warm or welcome experience for visitors first impressions of Australia!

After a previous experience returning to BNE in 2007, we were met with an hour delay passing through Customs and Passport Control, during the Arrivals departure upgrades. Staff were pleasant - however delays were inconvenient. Recently had the experience returning in April 2010 and a huge difference. The bio-metric gates proved a breeze to use which meant I was through passport control within minutes. We proceeded to the Something to Declare gate, where we were processed within a matter of minutes after sighting the items to declare. BNE arrivals has improved beyond expectation - however due to the quick journey through passport control, there was an annoying delay whilst waiting for luggage to appear on the carousel.

Parking is difficult in the domestic long-term park with frustrating delays trying to find a park - even before 8am. If possible make other travel arrangements.

I arrived mid-morning on a China Airlines flight and transferred onto a Qantas domestic flight. Everything was fine. All queuing and waiting, for customs, bags and passport control was minimal, with our flight and another from Japan arriving at almost exactly the same time. The process of international to domestic transfers is so easy, and made pleasant by the Qantas transfer desk (who had to come running after me when i left my boarding pass on the counter). The free train (if you have a boarding pass) makes a good change from Sydney. Domestic has a reasonable range of food places.

Arriving at Brisbane airport was good, hence being very far away from baggage claim passport and security although some travelators are provided when coming in on gate 75 but not all the way so whats the point of having them at all. and when departing, when entering the terminal there are no screens telling you which check in desks your flight is at all, then when buying some chocolate at first duty free before customs and security they tell you to pick it up after having cleared customs and security not good if you are in a hurry. Who came up with such a dumb idea of having security first and then passport control forcing you to line up and stand in a very long line and wait twice which is a total waste of time, unlike all other airports where passport control is first and then security flows on from there very smoothly. Once through there are only gate direction signs in some far corner instead of straight in front of you when you leave passport control so you end up asking where to go. And when going to gate 75 which Emirates uses, you walk for ages, and at the end of it there is a travelator, whats the point of having one at all if you have none at the beginning.

Travelers to Brisbane airport need to realize that there is no free, regular, convenient inter terminal shuttle service between domestic and international terminals. The airport web site advises using the 'Airtrain' - or a taxi (they must be joking!) The Airtrain is, in fact, the regular service to the Gold Coast, operating twice an hour, so if you just miss one, you have to spend 30 frustrated minutes on the platform, from which the other terminal is clearly visible, at the risk. And the train costs $4.00. (Only travellers arriving and leaving on Qantas flights have complementary travel by train.) There is a further inconvenience: getting yourself and your luggage to and from to the elevated train track; this may involve another $2.00 for the use of a trolley. There is an alternative: the airport-city mini bus service. The fare -- $3 when I last used the service - is paid at a kiosk just outside the arrivals hall, and you have to wait nearby while a confusing sequence of mini buses bound for various destinations comes and goes. So, inter terminal travel at Brisbane isn't a seamless experience, and, with trolleys and train fares factored in, can cost around $6.00. . No one at the airport seems to be particularly sympathetic to the inconvenience (and cost) of this curious arrangement.

As a regular, travelling through both the international and domestic terminals at Brisbane Airport, I thought I would add my comments here. Compared to many airports throughout the world I have travelled through, Brisbane Airport compares very favourably. Airbridges and steps to the aircraft tend to arrive quickly (unlike Heathrow, for example) and immigration is mostly very efficient, although I would recommend evening arrivals rather than early morning arrivals if you can plan it that way. Sitting next to passengers arriving from other countries, I have noticed some confusion regarding transferring to the domestic terminal, which is only about a kilometre or so away from the international terminal on the same airport and suburban trains are available for the transfer. However, an odd problem I have noticed is that many in Australia seem to confuse the term 'terminal' with 'airport'. This means that you may be asked to transfer to the 'domestic airport' when arriving at the international terminal in Brisbane. Please do not be dismayed. This is, in fact, the 'domestic terminal' which is located on the same airport. There is no other airline-used 'domestic airport' in Brisbane separate from the main Brisbane Airport (as would be the case, for example, in Bangkok) The same issue applies in Sydney where the domestic and international terminals are located on the same airport, despite what the confusing signs may tell you. The other main issue with Brisbane Airport is that although many flights now arrive from international destinations between 1030pm and 1am there are no trains into the city at all after about 7.30pm. The railway authorities do not seem to have realised this need. Otherwise, both domestic and international terminals offer good shopping with airy walkways and plenty of parking and plenty of taxis are usually available.

Used arrivals and departures at both domestic and international terminals recently. The international terminal reminded very much of Hong Kong. Very spacious, and everything seems to run smoothly. The time to wait in security queues was minimal and there were plenty of food and shopping options. The domestic terminal is a bit more tacky but good nevertheless. Very good airport.
