The airport in Barcelona, Venezuela - otherwise known as General José Antonio Anzoátegui
International Airport (BLA, and not to be confused with Barcelona, Spain!) - is small, but
modern and more efficient in some aspects than many Venezuelan airports. On four trips
through the aiport in July and August this past year, the only problem I encountered was a
flight leaving from the main upstairs departure hall when the screen insisted it was leaving
from the downstairs departure hall; speaking a modicum of Spanish is a huge help here. The
airport can be busy when Avior's scheduled international flight to Miami is leaving, but this
is very much the exception, not the rule; most flights from the airport are short scheduled
trips to Caracas or Margarita Island. There are a couple of basic shops airside, just after
security, where snacks and similar can be purchased. Note that - as is usual in Venezuela -
airport taxes have to be paid, in cash, before going through security. In mid 2010, these
were 31.50 bolivares for domestic flights, and 131.50 for international flights; less than the
equivalent taxes in Caracas.
