I frequently use Schiphol Airport. The terminal is clearly labelled. The facilities are clean, the stores are interesting. Food service is varied and also good. Parking and transportation is very well organized. It's an excellent airport except for one big thing: passport control. It is completely unacceptable to routinely wait between 30 minutes and an hour just to show your passport (mind you, this does not include going through scanners and such, it's merely showing your passport). The lines are typically enormous, hundreds of people, squashed into one area. Usually there are several booths unoccupied, even though the lines are enormous. Despite all it's many great qualities Schiphol needs to serve people better at passport control. Below it asks me if I would recommend the airport. Of course, what other choice does one have in The Netherlands.

Flew through AMS on my flight from Prague to Cairo and return. The Airport is easy to navigate through, loads of venues to eat and relax in, the walking distances can get a tad too long if you connect from the EU to non EU terminals. Self transfer counters are great still with some nice staff assisting. SKY Priority works well in all parts of the airport. Unfortunately the self-passport control gates were not working so the lines were long even in the EU zone passport holders. Each passport and ID were closely controlled by the officers under magnifying glasses. The remainder is a breeze, a very nice airport to fly through, no complains at all except the "charged" internet.

I fly often through this airport and for me I consider this as one of the most convenient airports. Plenty of facilities are available and the intelligent lay-out provides the advantage that no bus transport between terminals is needed what is unique for an airport of this size. Also every plane has its own gate what allows you direct walking access to the terminals. Handling of luggage is usually quickly finished and the transition below the airport makes that you can be very quick in Amsterdam. In summer times queuing might take a while but on average I have seen it much worse. Prices for food are relatively high. About transfers I cannot judge.

I find this airport well organized for transferring flights. Less hassle than CDG for sure. Calculate some walking time, but overall it works pretty good using AMS to change flights. I have been doing this quite a few times and it always was no problem.

I traveled through Schiphol Airport twice in June 2012. Since I was there in 2009 they have made Schiphol the most invasive airport from a security imaginable. Not only is a full body scan required, but now all passengers (except children) are then subjected to a manual pat down. Are these multi-million Euro full scan machines less effective than the previous scanners requiring an additional fondling of passengers? I noticed that that the children are not placed in full body scanners, but rather are walked though the old type scanner, and after that are not subject to pat down. No doubt the scanner manufacturers have made billions of Euros selling machines that apparently have made the process more invasive and less effective. I will avoid this airport in future as this "new" technology makes the already ridiculous airport security process completely unacceptable.

The airport is too large if you are transferring flights and are on a short time line. The restrooms are unkempt, dirty, and smell horrible. The security is inept and ridiculous, they made me damage my own clothing in order to move through the security check point. The staff in the airport seem highly offended if you are just transferring planes in their country instead of staying. My family and I will be avoiding this airport from here on out. Highly unprofessional, rude, and unacceptable.

Transit in AMS. Non-Schengen to Schengen return. Arrival time was 3pm and we found the Airport surprisingly empty. I am an EU-Passport holder, my Partner is Mexican and I had no issues passing with her through the much shorter EU Passport holder line at immigration. Security check took 15 minutes. Distances at AMS are quite long, we had 2 hours for transit, which gave some time to stroll around the shopping mile. From all airports we visited on this trip, AMS has the best Duty Free offers. On the return to Mexico, we arrived in AMS in the Morning around 11 and the Airport was packed. Lines were long at immigration, but we could again use the EU Passport line, which reduced waiting to 15 minutes. Security check done at the gate, which saved time. Staff friendly and efficient. Big Airport, long distances, AMS is stress free, if your transit is 1 hour or less, it might get stressful at peak hours.

I have transferred through Schiphol numerous times easily and this time was no different. The simple gate numbering system and one terminal concept meant I could rush though with ease and still go to the duty free shop with only a very short transfer time and Information staff are very helpful. Because of this when I book flights I only ever transfer through Schiphol (with KLM) and avoid going through Paris CDG (with Air France) at all costs.

Used for flight transfer both ways. Toilets overflowing in both cases. System confusing. Worst of all was the security staff at gate D6 - very unprofessional and blunt to the point of rudeness. Very much a cattle market. I sympathise with some airlines who try to provide a good service but are let down by airport service providers in terms of the overall flying experience for customers. The airlines have enough collective influence to get things changed, why don't they?

A completely functional airport, but not as good as expected. It seems very institutional with lots of stainless steel and many areas were crowded (check-in and at the gates). I found it difficult to transfer between a domestic European flight and an intercontinental one as the terminals were at opposite ends. Toilets are clean! Good food and shopping opportunities. Getting into the city is easy if you're going to Amsterdam. The security is fierce! The first time I've experienced a full body pat down.

We will never travel through Schipol again. We had a long layover, and could find nowhere to relax let alone snooze. Gates have fewer than half the number of seats needed for a flight, and passengers line up like cattle in metal railing-defined queues. Security scanning is done at the gate. Process of checking in poorly handled by grouchy staff. The bathroom I was able to find near our gate was not very clean or private.

First time in Schiphol for 20 years and it is the easiest and user friendly of major airports. KLM ground staff and immigration made our transfer a pleasure, despite time being against us.

Were very close on time, arrived 10 minutes before check-in closed, but still able to check-in just before check-in closed. Shuttle busses all the time, which take around 10 minutes to Terminal 3. Passport control very easy, and just after check-in. You can avoid the shops and walk straight to gates. Very easy to find with wide walkways and loads of rolling bands. Security check into waiting room was not so pleasant, 5 minutes waiting time but the security guys were rude. On the way home, passport control was very smooth, but there was a long wait for our baggage.

Antwerp-Bangkok via Amsterdam with KLM. Arriving at the airport was a mess, airport staff very rude and unhelpful. We had to queue for 2 hours at check-in. We were then brought to another check in, were they told us we had 5 minutes to get to the gate. We ran to the gate and just made it (last passengers to board). To top it all off the plane didn't move for another 45 minutes! Horrible experience, will avoid using Schiphol.

If you have a short transit time, please avoid this airport. It is very large and there is a lot of walking to do between gates. The worst are the KLM staff who can be extremely unfriendly, rude and dismissive when you need their help. Never fly into this airport when there is any delay in Amsterdam due to bad weather or any other unforeseen circumstances because staff can't cope. You will be left stranded for hours or days and they won't bother to help you find hotel accommodation.

JNB-AMS-ORD return. Transferred at Schiphol both ways. This is a very clean and well organised airport. Gates are easy to find with maps and signs everywhere, which are easy to understand and follow. There are a number of rest areas with very comfortable seating (especially the ones on the top floor of Terminal 3). They are very quiet and comfortable. The airport also offers shower facilities, although I am not sure if there are any free ones. I used the facilities at the Mercure Hotel in the transit area, which cost 15 euros but if you are transferring between two long flights, the price is worth it. Staff are friendly and helpful. There are decent duty free shops albeit not many. Schiphol is an absolute pleasure to transfer through.

Overall the best airport when it comes to duty free, smoking lounges, cafes etc. The worst when it comes to immigration staff - expect a 40 min-1 hr wait if travelling outside Europe. Recommended if your layover is long!

Overall it looks clean. The duty free shops are overpriced. Their system can be confusing mixing up arrival and departures. The biggest problem however is the security staff and police. Not friendly and at times arrogant or short tempered. Security is not well organized. In a short transit I would skip this airport. Travelling in Europe there are better options. Due to the very unfriendly atmosphere I would rate this airport poor.
