TRAVEL SUMMARY
First Class : looking somewhat dated, with seats and cabin facilities in need of upgrading.
Airport service lacks the privileges and service enhancements that many other airlines provide. Against the
competition on transatlantic routes BA standards are fair, but do not compare well against better product
and service found with many Asian and Middle Eastern airlines.
Business Class : Club World is starting to offer new, improved flat-bed seats. These are comfortable with
a reasonable seat length and width, and improved privacy. Personal taste dictates if you like the back to front
layout of seats across the cabins. Club Europe is the short haul product name. Whilst okay in contrast to other
European carriers, the seats only offer a little bit more width and legroom over their economy counterpart, and
the only other real benefit is access to lounges at most airports and an enhanced onboard meal service.
Premium Economy : offered on long haul flights, the key benefit is that the seats offer about 5-6 inches extra
legroom. Meals are similar, although you normally get served quicker than in the main cabin. No real service
privileges at the airport. If you can get these seats for a "small" premium cost on basic economy seats, its worth
going for, but at full price can seem expensive.
Economy Class : long haul the seats are tight - just 31 inch seat pitch, and being older style seats, your actual
legroom area can feel very cramped. Meals in Economy have been gradually cut back over recent years, and portion /
meal quantity on long haul routes whilst acceptable, is certainly not generous. Short haul catering has had to
react to low-cost airline competition, and frequently comprises a sandwich/wrap and hot/cold beverage.
Inflight Entertainment : BA is introducing audio/video on demand across long haul aircraft for all cabins, and this is
a much awaited and appreciated improvement. Standards of entertainment are fine for most - not however matching those you will
find with likes of Emirates or Singapore Airlines.
Staff Service : an airline the size of BA is bound to have varying standards, and this is patently clear across all our
analysis of BA airport and onboard service. In its favour, it is generally quite reliable - not the top end service quality you will find with some carriers, but generally acceptable.
Normally not a service where you will
find the highest levels of attention and efficiency, but staff service standards generally at an acceptable level.
BE AWARE : with London Heathrow Airport as its home base, British Airways has suffered considerable problems in
the past year - lost baggage being a major deterrent. Allied to this, the single piece hand luggage rule may deter
many customers from transiting through Heathrow, and for those arriving and departing, growing security and immigration
delays do not make this an enjoyable airport experience.
VERDICT : a generally reliable and dependable airline. Best product/service option is the Club World long haul
business class, with European business class not worth the extra money over their economy cabin. First Class is good, if
you can get it at discounted fares - but this is not a truly premium product at the moment. Economy class
standards match most European and US competitors, but you will find better economy travel standards with many airlines
based in Asia and Middle East.
