We
have featured below a small selection of passenger feedback supplied as part of
this Onboard Cellphone usage survey.

Onboard Cellpone Survey results
..... If they insist on allowing cell phone use on aircraft, then airlines
should be obligated to provide phone booths or some type of sound-proof
area for chatting.
.....
There are many kinds of passenger in a closed cabin, and some want to
relax or sleep inflight. I oppose using cell phone inflight. Even in
case if airlines would permit passengers to use cell phones during the
flight, they shall provide closed designated area or booth not to
disturb resting passengers.
.....
On shorthaul flights, on the early morning flights where typically a lot
of business people fly, you would never get a moment's peace in the
cabin because of the yaki-di-yak of phone conversation. If it was ever
introduced it should be prohibitively high priced to ensure that people
did not spend the time small talking.
.....
On a flight of 12 hours the potential to have a 747 full of mobile
phones constantly chiming would be horrendous!
.....
Our lives are blighted enough with the expectation of being on call via
mobiles at all times. They are intrusive to the user and to any person
who is in the vicinity of them. I certainly do not need or want my
personal time, space and time on an aircraft to be interrupted by darn
mobile phones and the users of them. Keep them off aircraft - please!
.....
The airplane environment is already an acoustically aggressive one
without the incessant ringing of cell phones. Few people really, really
need to be on the phone during a flight, be it short or long haul. If
they really needed that, you would see them using the onboard phones a
lot more often. That's why I say a resounding "NO" to cell phones
onboard any flight. Should that happen anyway, all passengers should
then get complimentary noise-cancelling headsets.
.....
When in the air, it is the only time you actually have to yourself
without being bothered. All one needs is to to try and sleep on a long-
haul flight beside a yapper. Air Rage cases would go up.
.....
It's bad enough we're disturbed by chatty people in restaurants,
shopping malls and even meetings. I can't imagine sitting next to one of
those compulsive talkers for 3 or more hours.
.....
Existing if expensive skyphone on longhaul meets urgent needs; mobiles
would become invasive social environment affecting all of us who want to
sleep, relax, or work. Look at the experience in lounges.
.....
The background noise level on planes is already very high and people
using phones will shout.
.....
Air travel should be calm and peaceful, cell phones on board of planes
will be an outright nuisance (in restaurants as well). The airline which
does NOT permit cell phone use, gets my business.
.....
It would be difficult and unfair to expect cabin crew to oversee the use
of phones - particularly regarding people's voice volume. Aircraft
cabins are too confined an environment and I don't want to listen to
anyone else's conversation.
.....
In the crowded confines of an airplane, multiple cell phone
conversations (many of them inane, and annoying) would make the air
travel very unpleasant. People tend to talk loudly on cell phones and
relay information that is often of interest only to themselves, and
maybe the other person in the phone call. Multiple phone conversations
of this nature would simply raise the raise level and the irritability
factor. Airplane seat mates are always a gamble - some are good and
some are not. Add cell phone conversations to the mix and incidences of
air rage will increase. The is a level of general dissatisfaction
associated with the airlines due to small seats, limited legroom, limits
on carry-on luggage, food vs. no food, etc. Cell phones on flights will
just be another annoyance.
.....
It is a sad reflection on modern times that this is even an issue, and
that people feel they cannot sit through even the longest flight
without 'needing' to use their mobile. Why can they not just sit tight
and wait? And even if their are no safety issues to prevent the use, its
plain rude to sit having a conversation and forcing everyone around you
to listen. Other passengers should be considered, nervous flyers would
undoubtedly be made more so by someone wittering away on a flight.
.....
Totally oppose to this especially on long-haul flights since one of the
main purpose is to get some rest or to carry out some work before
arriving. Maybe airlines can create a special corner for passengers
wishing to use their cellphones. Being 35000 ft in the air is one of
the last place where peace and quiet would be appreciated.
.....
Cellphones are totally unnecessary on planes. We have managed for years
without them. One of the few pleasures of flying is being in a place
where we are not incessantly aggressed by irritating rings and people
shouting so loudly that you would think they would be audible without a
phone anyway
.....
Would be like phones in restaurants except that the close proximity to
other passengers means extra annoyance.
.....
If we think we've seen road rage and stressed out passengers, just wait
until we have to listen to our fellow passengers talking on their
phones.
.....
We got rid of smoke (cigarette) pollution on airplanes. Please, do not
introduce noise pollution (cell phone). There are more advantages than
disadvantages to be cut off from the rest of the world for a few hours.
.....
Sitting next to someone on the train, telling the world that they are on
a train is bad. But at least you can move to another carriage. Being
strapped in next to someone (especially business men getting excited)
would be living hell.
.....
Planes are the only place where cellphones don't ring nowadays. If
people start using them, forget any hope of sleep.
.....
The thought of being on a long flight and somebody using their mobile
phones is just awful, there would be no peace whatsoever, be it from
people talking or from incessant text messaging/emailing.
.....
The complete inability of people to talk softly when using a cell-phone
would mean an enormous amount of noise and unnecessary disruption to
other passengers if people could use their cell phones. Passengers,
particularly on long haul flights choose to rest and sleep at different
times and this would be severely compromised if cell-phones were being
used.
.....
I treat the time on an aircraft as "thinking" or sleeping time - with
the differences in time zones I don't want to get woken up, or
interrupted by phones.
.....
If there was a particular area designated to the use of mobile phones so
it doesn't disturb other passengers then I would say that would be fine
- but I do not want to sit and listen to someone else's conversation,
especially if they love the sound of the their own voice!
.....
This would mean that the last bastion of peace & quiet and the ability
to read uninterrupted would be lost forever in favour of the banaal crap
that people seem intent on boring one another with at their own expense.
"I'm on a train " becomes "I'm on an airplane" followed by minute detail
of where they are going etc. God help us!
.....
To allow passengers to use mobiles during a long flight, particularly at
night, would be disruptive to sleeping passengers. Mobile phone users
tend to speak louder in normal environments - in a cabin environment
this could be terrible.
.....
Its bad enough on other types of transport. People shouting into a
mobile, "I'm on the plane" is just too much.
.....
It is nice for once not to be contactable, and aeroplanes are one of the
last places where this is possible.
.....
Our society has become unbelievable in regards to cell phone etiquette.
If cell phone use does ever become allowed on flights it should only be
in an onboard phone booth.
.....
The cabin of a plane is one of the last places on earth that remains
cell phone free. Many people use the cell phone unnecessarily and the
other 200+ passengers would not be able to avoid hearing the
conversations. Air travel is uncomfortable enough without making it even
worse.
.....
The proximity of passengers in an airplane precludes the use of cell
phones, even when using headsets. Cell phone use on airplanes will lead
to frustration, complaints, fatigue and dissatisfaction with both the
offender and the airlines that allow it. Many cell phone users ignore
any sort of etiquette or politeness, and will not adhere to any policy
dictated by an airline other than prohibited use. I would be happy to
pay more to fly on a cell-phone-free airline.
.....
If mobile phone usage is to be allowed, segregate the phone usage to a
designated part of the plane, as in the former "smoking section" days,
to let others have some peace on the flight.
.....
Use of cell phones in flight would ruin one of the few times where you
can get lost in your own thoughts.
.....
We have enough air rage today. Why should anyone put up with some
inconsiderate person yapping on his/her phone like s/he's married to it?
And to those folks who take their work away from work, relax. It's the
only part of your business trip in which you can do so.
.....
Being in a flying tube with minimal toilets, no food, and tight seating
is trying enough for one's temper. It would be a vile mistake to add
the cacophony of cell phone ringtones, let alone the passengers trying
to out volume each other's scatological cell phone conversations.
.....
Cell phone conversations can be very disruptive and annoying especially
if they are of a personal nature and if one is trying to sleep or read.
Many people talk far too loudly without consideration for others.
.....
The thought of having the guy next to me chatting away loudly to someone
else is not something I'm looking forward to. Its one of the more
irritating points of train journeys. At least your seat is not that
close on a train.
.....
The last thing I want to listen to on a plane are inane and imbecile
phone conversations. Please spare me!
.....
I find conversations on cell phones in public highly intrusive and
extremely irritating. Given the current technology, people will be
shouting down these handsets in order to be heard. Definitely against
this idea!!
.....
I found it very annoying to be forced to listen to people's indiscreet
telephone conversations in public space. Imagine to have to listen to
that/being disturbed by that during a 10+hours flight?
.....
It can be difficult enough to get some peace and quiet on a flight
without the thought of dozens of passengers shouting down their mobile
phones for hours on end, remembering that one cannot escape from it. I
feel the issue is akin to smoking on a plane insofar that it is anti
social and a few hours without being able to use a phone is hardly an
inconvenience!
.....
I simply feel that since there is already a good deal of "road"-type
rage onboard airlines with the downturn in customer service, etc., the
last thing needed to stress people out is the idea of being able to use
a cell phone. Many will not, which means they will have to listen to the
constant chatter of those around them, and considering rudeness is
becoming more and more apparent in society, I just foresee the
possibility of arguments and fights on flights. We have those now that
don't even want to turn off their computers when the flight is preparing
to land; we have kids playing video games without having them on mute or
not using headphones. Are we now going to have quiet sectors on flights?
Non-cell phone flights? Just keep the policy as is: let people use their
phones until the flight begins or until they are in the gate and end it
at that.
.....
I would only be in favour of cellphone use if there was a dedicated
section of the aircraft or certain dedicated times when they can be used
during a long haul flight
.....
The thought of being trapped in a chair for even 1 hour while the person
next to me jabbers away on his/her mobile phone horrifies me. Look at
what happens in trains or buses, do we really want such noise pollution
on aeroplanes as well? What happens on red-eyes when one is trying to
sleep. Please, please don't.
.....
Just realize how many gossiping, trash talking loud people, you will
have to put on with through a 9 hour flight. Its just that planes are
too small, and lets face it, no one wants to sit through 9 hours, in a
small space with a bunch of cellphones going off every second.
.....
As everyone shouts when using mobile phones on public transport, I see
no difference on aircraft. I recently was on a 2 hour US domestic leg &
the woman behind talked the whole way. Everyone could hear 2 rows
forward & back. For long haul they MUST be banned otherwise how would
people be able to sleep. There is no reason why someone can't switch off
for 8 hours. What do they do when they sleep.
.....
Everybody knows how unbelievably annoying it is to have somebody on the
bus or the train or at the office just yell at the top of their voice
over their cell phones for all to here. I think its just stupid to let
that kind of behavior onto airplanes where there is a lot less personal
space.
.....
Cell phones would be a tremendous annoyance if allowed to be used on an
aircraft. It's bad enough when one is on the train for a relatively
short journey to work or home, but to be captive on an aircraft would be
dreadful.
.....
I don't believe there is a safety issue but it would be very irritating
to other passengers.
.....
I don't mind the current rule in the US of being able to use your phone
as soon as the plane lands, but cannot abide the thought of people using
their phones in the air.
..... I think we should have quiet zones in the plane for people who
do not want to listen to the cell phone. I think on long haul flights
there should be a "talk zone" where they are able to talk in a certain
area outside their seats so not to disturb others in stuck in their
seat.
.....
The thought of listening to passengers in inane conversation at the tops
of their lungs sends shivers down the spine of this very frequent flyer.
.....
The security issues aside, the allowance of cellphones usage in planes
will open the flood gates to constant noise pollution in planes! People
get bored in planes and will easily want to pick up the phone and make
calls, and if there was no cost disincentive to make calls, multiple
passengers will be on the phone for hours and contributing to horrible
noise pollution in a confined area. It would make it even more difficult
for FA to attend to some already unruly passengers
.....
We've got to overhear all this crap on the ground. Flying has become
such a chore, but at least you don't have to hear your seatmate talk
about his or her marital. No cell phones onboard.
.....
Using cellphones in enclosed public spaces is anti-social. It would
drive me mad if the person sat next to me was babbling into thin-air
throughout a journey. If they are to be permitted on planes then their
use should be restricted to special areas such as on the French TGV's
.....
Flights are stressful enough with added security and less quality
service from airlines. The disruption and irritation of allowing
passengers to use their cell phones would increase these stress levels.
Imagine a flight with the constant "hi ya" of received calls keeping
passengers awake. There would definitely be more incidents of air rage
if the use of cellphones is permitted.
.....
Aircraft cabins are a sanctuary away from the inconsiderate individuals
who inflict their lives upon us when using their mobile phones. Let's
keep it that way!
.....
As in the US, I think cellphones should be able to be used up until the
cabin doors are closed. I like to sleep on flights as I travel a lot
and, sometimes short haul flights are connections to/from long haul.
The idea of being interrupted by cellphones going off is something I
wouldn't want to contemplate - or tolerate.
.....
I have no objection to cell phone use while on the ground, before the
doors close, or upon landing, as soon as the plane touches down (Alaska
is very good about what it allows). But once in the air, I do not want
to be subjected to what is typically an incessant and inane jabbering on
phones.
.....
Using a cellphone on a plane is as intrusive as smoking. There will
always be some idiot who wants to use their cellphone when everyone else
wants to sleep.
.....
Cellphones will become a pain to other customers. Ringing all the time
and people constantly talking. Some people just never think about others
and become a pain. I've found this on other public transport IE trains
coaches, buses.
.....
Crying babies, people snoring loudly, sitting in a seat with a tiny
pitch behind someone who insists on reclining right back into your face
- as if this wasn't bad enough, please don't also let us have to suffer
the sounds of umpteen different ring-tones plus having to listen into
other peoples conversations
.....
The last thing I need on a flight is to have a cabin full of loud people
yacking on their cell phones with no regard for the people around them.
If the time I spend in the lounges before the flight is any indication,
then it would be a madhouse if airlines started allowing cell use
onboard.
.....
Once any room is given on this issue peoples privacy will be destroyed
on all flights.
.....
Being in a confined space such as an aircraft with people talking loudly
(without being able to escape from them) would be a nightmare
.....
I would not have a problem with a cell phone section, much like the old
smoking section on planes. I fear, however, being on a transcon flight
and having the persons next to me on his/her phone for the much of the
flight. Whether in coach or first, the distraction is equally annoying.
.....
There is hardly anywhere in the Western world where you can escape cell
phones. Flying can be a big enough ordeal even without the inane "must
keep in touch with base" moronic chatter typical of many cell phone
users. (Yes, I DO have a cell phone.)
.....
It will be a poor decision for airlines to allow this because of how it
will affect other passengers in a negative way.
.....
It is clear that cell phone use would be very disruptive of the peace of
other in the cabin. I like to work or sleep on flights and don't want
anybody screaming into his cell phone near me. Only today's blanket
prohibition will be effective in preventing abuse.
.....
Cell phones are a bane of public life, they are supposed to be for
private use, and that's where they should stay, private. I'm fed up of
hearing other peoples conversation, peace is what we want. Aircraft are
one of the few places we know that we can have that, let's keep it that
way.
.....
On the A380, special cell-phone areas should be set up to avoid
disturbing fellow travelers.
.....
The last thing I want to do is sit next to someone who is talking on
their phone the entire trip.
.....
I definitely oppose the use of cell phones on airlines - enough banter
and conversation already. I like to relax and clear my mind while
flying. There's no reason people need to be on the phone for the few
hours it take to fly.
vThe airlines could create acoustically isolated "phone booths" in each
cabin from which cell phones could be made. Otherwise, there should be
no cell phones allowed on board. Amtrak has the experience to justify
that.
.....
It shows that people would have no further sense of manners when it
comes to cell phones. I already dread it sitting next to some guy on a
bus that talks loud enough that the whole bus has to hear what's going
on in his life. Now imagine it having to sit next to the same person on
a fully loaded 757 for four plus hours.
.....
When people use their phones on the buses for 30 minutes it drives most
people mad. People on phones, as they have one ear blocked, tend to
speak at a higher volume and it disrupts the passengers around them. I
personally wouldn't fly with an airline that allowed mobile phones. If
there was an airline on the same route that doesn't have this feature,
I'd fly with them.
.....
Totally opposed to the idea. Flights are one of the few places left
where mobiles can't be used and for that I am truly grateful.
.....
If they are going to permit the use of cell phones they should provide
'booths' and only permit the use in the booth. Elsewhere they should be
jammed, as they are increasingly in French cinemas.
.....
I find it extremely annoying on trains and in restaurants, therefore,
please not on aircraft .... especially long haul.
.....
It would be yet another place that is invaded by the constant, annoying
sound of ring-tones.
.....
People speak much louder on a mobile telephone than they do in normal
conversation, the use of mobile phones on a flight with 300+ other
passengers would be intolerable unless kept separate from other
passengers.
.....
The airline cabin is the last bastion of silence from abusers of mobile
(cell) phones who invariably shout, don't talk, and make life misery for
those around them.
